Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams series,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A Team.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
It's a Tuesday edition of the A Team here on
Sports Talk seven to ninety and I'm just going to
get it out of the way, right out of the gate.
I am disgusted with the Hometown Nines offense. I am
tired of seeing double digit strikeouts. I am tired of
having bullpen guys that have to be absolutely flawless come
(00:39):
in and when they're not, they somehow, some way, some
people make them the goat, and not in the good way.
They put the goat ear the goat horns on them.
I am tired of runners in scoring position. I'm tired
of three out of four innings the inning ends with
the bases juiced and nothing of real consequence was made
(01:00):
because a one run game is not going to win
you many games on the road, and that's what happened
last night. I hate the fact that turd Ferguson had
to have that kind of debut. It wasn't even his
debut because he pitched over the weekend, which that didn't
go well either. But yeah, I've just about had it
with this offense. And it's the same names on the
(01:20):
backs of the jerseys, and I think it's the same
people in those jerseys, but they're playing like the biggest
you know what teases I've ever seen in my entire
life offensively, and it sucks because the pitching for the
most part, especially from the starters, is getting a job done.
And I held my tongue, but you can't do this
against the Rangers and not get me pissed off because
now I have people ripping and biting my gimmick on Twitter,
(01:43):
and I have to deal with that because these guys
can't bring a runner home.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Hi, WEX, Welcome back. Welcome to the eight team.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
WEX and AC here with you on a Tuesday afternoon,
following the first of their nine games on this road trip,
first of their three games against the Texas Rangers, hopefully
the first of men any strong starting pitching performances, but
you can't deny the fact that they've had back to
back outings by their starting pitchers where they're allowed just
(02:08):
one run over six innings.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
They didn't win either game.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
The offense has been very reluctant to push across runs
for quite some time now. Last night was not something new.
The series against Tampa was not something new. The players
involved in this is not something new. And I know
it's a time of year when you've drifted back towards
five hundred, you've drifted back out of first place, where
(02:32):
the blame game probably gets played more than anything else.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
We're here for it. We can certainly play it.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
I think some of the blame being sent around is
extremely misguided, but that's okay. We all have our own
opinions on what needs to and can actually get better.
Even at this stage of the season where personnel moves
become difficult to come by, the Astros are limited with
their options. They have internal candidates to pitch and hit
(02:58):
moving forward, and they will doubtedly be using them, possibly
starting today, depending on when we see the lineup of
pedro Leone, after four seasons partial seasons of putting on
a triple A jersey for the Astros, got his opportunity
and things are so bad for the team. He continued
to get an opportunity three consecutive days in the lineup,
(03:20):
and he just happens to be exactly what bats in
front of him and in front of him and in
front of him and in front of him, a fivesome
of strikeout artists were on display last night. After you
get through the first four in the order, and really
the first three, because their other teams are getting smarter
and smarter, why should we throw any pitches to Yordon Alvarez,
(03:42):
even if he doesn't hit homers anymore, We shouldn't even
throw him any pitches.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
And now they're not sproach he ever pitched to yord
On Alvarez since taking over with the Rangers.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
He has when things are going well, I don't remember.
We really can't avoid it, and when things are going poorly,
it would be dumb to do it.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
And they're not dumb, you know.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
Bruce Boch's had a pretty deft hand with his bullpen,
and they also have a much better bullpen than the
ones the Astros fans are used to seeing from the
last couple of years and certainly from last year. They
made a couple of moves in the offseason the pitcher
at the end of the game for them.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
With his two innings.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Worth of work, he's been one of the best closes
in baseball. He signed a one year free agent deal
for less than five million dollars, became an All Star,
and yeah, there were a lot of poor numbers in
his career, in injury issues with his career, but that
was a move made that turned out to be spectacular.
If the Astros had a move or two like that,
they'd probably be in a similar position to where they
were last year, believing that this division was still going
(04:37):
to be theirs regardless of where they were in the standings.
And I'm not sure if people still think that, even
though the deficit is not too much to overcome. The
Astros have fifty games left. Can you outplay the Mariners
by two wins?
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yes? I think you can. I think quite obviously. The
math says you can.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
You run the risk of losing the season series to
the Texas Rangers if you do not win both games
remaining tonight and tomorrow, you're already up against it with
the Seattle Mariners in that regard, and there aren't any
extra games on the schedule anymore. With the way the
playoffs are set up, they're all mathematically decided tie breakers.
If you don't win the season series, well, then you
(05:15):
don't advance past somebody in either the seedings or into
the postseason or as a division titleist, as we learned
a year ago. So there's a lot on the table
from the Astros, quite obviously, and unfortunately it comes on
the heels of what took place last night. They do
end up scoring a run late to take the lead,
they give it back in the eighth inning, get their
one measlely run in the top of the tenth inning,
(05:35):
with very very good opportunities to score more, and of
course it's not enough. They can't get out of the
bottom of the tenth inning. Last pitch of the game
turns a one run victory into a one run loss.
We've now seen a couple of games from the lefty
reliever that Dana Brown acquired. We've seen one game from
Yusay Kakuchi, the left handed starting pitcher that he acquired,
(05:57):
and that was the extent of his workload complete at
the deadline. And that's certainly one of the other huge
stories of what will be the final fifty games of
the season. So no doubt generate a lot of our
conversation right there. Texans continue working at a local high
school in Ohio and they got one more day of
practice there. They'll take their off day on Thursday, and
(06:19):
then they will saddle up with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and
if Dimiko's true to his word, and he always has been,
we will see the starters play in this particular game.
They do still have two more games remaining, both of
them at home, both of them noon games on Saturday
the following week and week after one of them is
preceded by a joint practice. And we're still now twelve
(06:42):
practices into training camp and the most important protector for
their quarterback has not seen any action at training camp.
So I still am a bit curious what exactly the
starters are going to play some on Saturday against the
Steelers mean if Laramie Tunsel is not among those starters.
(07:03):
And quite honestly, with Titus Howard heading into the medical
tent and leaving practice early today, he's been in the
medical tent now twice during camp. First time he went
in was here in Houston. He went into the tent,
spent about fifteen minutes in there, then went back to
practice and continued with no real issue. This time a
little bit more blurry of exactly what took place, not
sure because I wasn't there and they haven't had anything
(07:25):
to say a day where the coordinator spoke and the
head coach did not. Not likely he would divulge much.
We'll find out tomorrow of Titus returns to the practice field.
But if neither tackle is playing on Saturday, and you're
left with rookie Blake Fisher either at the spot he's
been playing, which is left tackle. He actually was back
(07:46):
at practice today after missing some time, and probably Nick
Broker at the other tackle spot against the Steelers were
honestly against anybody, I'm really gonna want to limit those
reps for by starting quarterback. If I'm to be go Ryan,
Bobby Slowick, Cala McNair, with the fans, Andre Johnson, JJ Watt,
(08:06):
whoever has an interest in this team, don't play. I
would think you would feel the same way. No, unless
the game counts. If Laramie Tunseel is not protecting his
blind side, don't play.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
This isn't hard. You don't have to do it. He
can get his reps in a different game. He can
get it war all or not at all. I think
he's gonna have to play a little bit. He could
play against the Rams at Thursday's joint practice. I mean,
like two weeks from now I'm they can't touch him.
I'm a full go Yeah, I'm of the opinion I
don't need to see him in a game. I know others,
(08:38):
you know, feel like he should get some reps, but.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Not not me. I'm fine with it.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
And again, it's nothing against anybody that's not named Laramie
Tunsell playing at that position, except for it is because
they're not Larry Mi Tunsel. And that's why he's one
of the highest paid, one of the highest rated.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
All that kind I know.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
I give him, you know, criticism throughout the year, all
the false starts, all that kind of stuff. At the
end of the day, he is one of the best
left tackles and that's what you need, regardless of who
it is in front of CJ. Stroud, if he's on
the field for a game that does or doesn't count.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
How closely were you watching the preseason game at left
tackle just out of curiosity?
Speaker 3 (09:17):
How closely was I watching it?
Speaker 4 (09:20):
No, not even the amount of uncalled Laramie Tunsil style
false starts the Texans had. They're probably fifteen eight And
it's just a matter of which referees do you have.
What's the key point that the officials have gone through
in the offseason that they want to do. Because I'm
not denying that he doesn't do it, but we don't.
We watch their games more than any other in the league.
(09:43):
Left tackles as a kind of a resume builder. They
protect their quarterback, and they false start because.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
What they do because one comes after the other, because
that's it goes back to one, two goes back to one.
That's why you're getting false starts because you don't want
anything to happen to that guy. Keep his jur clean,
keep his joints and bones and head intact.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Yes, I mean that's he was fired up during the game.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
I'm sure most people have seen that obviously, though without playing.
There are some couple of injury new items are regarding
the Texas as they head into this game, but I
do think they kind of start their preseason now the
game activity.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
We'll see some starters here.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
You'll probably see more when they get back home for
the next Saturday's game, and then maybe you'll see a
small group of them in the last game because again
they'll have that Thursday practice with the Rams to really
get what they need out of it, and then it'll
be time to thirty three days from now suit up
against the Inniapolis Colts in the Indianapolis Anthony Richardson, CJ. Stroud,
and who will begin the season one to zero. I hope,
(10:42):
and atop the division, I certainly hope there's not a
ten minute scoreless overtime period in the opening week of
the season. So I'm gonna pretend one of the teams
will come out with a victory in that opener, and
then there'll be sixteen games to go, and you'll be
in a very good position if you've won your first
division game, if you opened up with the Colts with
a win, and you get to come back home play
Sunday night football against the Bears, and whatever Caleb Williams
(11:05):
has done in the opener, and we'll see a little
of him and the rest of his crew, I'm sure
moving forward as well.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
Well.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
The good news is both stadiums, no matter where they
would play this opening game, have a roof, so there
won't be any lightning that chases the game four hours
on end.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
Prest season games being shortened are fine, No, I absolutely
fine with that, all right.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
So we will check back in with the Astros manager
Joe Espotta when we come back on last night's to
backle here on.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
The eighteen, we now returned to Adam Clinton and Adam
Wexler on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
What was your favorite tree cabbage as an astro moment?
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Adam Wexler.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
Uh, probably the catch he made against Julio Rodriguez and
then he no flies owned him, all in good fun.
I wished it was the catch he didn't make to
save Josh Hate from giving up a game ending homer,
But he didn't catch that one, so it wasn't my favorite,
so I'll go with the one he actually caught. He,
like most of his teammates that play outfield and or
(12:10):
sit on the bench for games, are absolute strikeout machines.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
They are artists.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
They are true artists in the art of not hitting
the baseball, not putting it in play, swinging and missing,
and having fruitless at bats shouldn't come as a surprise
to anybody. This is the resume he brought with him
from Anaheim, from the Angels. This is why he was
available to them, one of Dana's trades by the way,
in the off season to acquire him. Nothing wrong with
acquiring him, but the expectations for him were met. This
(12:36):
is who he is and unfortunately, he has, like so
many others, been unable to provide this team with much
And I have to assume there was a roster move
made involving very cabbage.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Yeah, so he is headed back out to Sugarland. Zach
Dezenzo is going to be called up and wear number
nine case you're into that sort of thing. And to
make room for him on the forty man roster, the
Astros designated Dylan Coleman for assignmon.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
Another trade that Dana Brown made this offseason. Again, nothing
wrong with some of these. Let's see if we can
find something. Dylan Coleman has really good stuff. But if
you watched any of spring training or have followed him
at all with the Space Cowboys, he hates throwing strikes
and he's a pitcher, so that is bad.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
So did the uh so did the Kenny Powers blonde
version look alike last night for the Rangers?
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Well only when he was facing Victor Carrottini, right, and
he like, this is why I keep harping on the
bottom five of the order.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
We'll get to Zach Decenzo.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
This is meaningful for the Astros, by the way, not
only for the remaining fifty games this year, I hope,
but potentially many of the next sets of one sixty
two in the future on the infield, on the hot corner, potentially,
but once jiner Diez gets hit by a pitch or
flies out, or singles or does something really good as
(13:57):
the cleanup hitter, but doesn't have an RBI to show
for it, which is insane. All monthly he was the
Astro's best hitter. He's batting in the four hole, can't
drive in any runs because nobody's ever out there for him.
And then when he does get a hit with two
guys on, he hits it so hard the guy on
second can't round third and score. But anyway, the Rangers
are learning from other teams. Once we get past those
first four, it's over. It showed up in the first
(14:18):
inning a couple of days ago when they got out
of trouble by striking out Jeremy Pania without throwing any
strikes six consecutive pitches out of the zone. He swung
and missed it three of them, and yesterday's game, once
you got past them, as long as you didn't also
hit Jeremy Pania with a pitch, which Kirby Yates did
you had no trouble at all getting out of it
because the rest of the order, and that's why I
(14:38):
include them all, everybody that Joe a spot of house
on his bench again arguably other than Victor, all the
outfielders he has the Elegmus Diaz, the great Cassinger when
he was here, and what they currently have.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
They don't hit the ball.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
And Mauricio Dubon is the worst of all because that
has not He's like one of the only guys that
I can look at and say, no, no, this is
really really he doesn't look like who he is, but
this is who he's been for way more than a
month's worth of time. They have a big hole in
their lineup, and it's more than half of it, so
they have to make these moves. You have to reach
(15:13):
out to pedro leone and hope. Now you have to
reach out to Zach Decenzo and hope to go one
for seven with the bases loaded. Driving a run on
a ten foot single, driving a run on a hit
by pitch and strikeout in five of those other six
act bats is insane. And it's just watching it unfold,
is I'm sure hard for everybody his stomach, including Dana Brown,
(15:35):
including Jim Crane, and obviously including the guy who wears
what they wear to games, Joe Spata. The costume, I mean,
it's a costume if you're not a player. Is it
a uniform if you are a player? I think that's
how we're so so even though, so what is what
is like the other night when you say, made his
debut and one of his older bearded teammates was singing
(15:58):
along with usday in the dugout. Is he wearing a
costume because he's currently on the il JV. No, because
he's still a player, still player, And he probably didn't
have his jersey on because he wore one of those
short sleeve hoodies instead of a jersey I magic.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
That Bill Belichick made famous.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
No, this is designed that way. Okay, the sleeves have
some stitching left in them. He didn't have his then
much older girlfriend cut it for him. I'm curious to
see if he were to be on the sidelines this year,
if it'd be more of a cleaner bedazzled potentially low
that Bill might have. But we will see him doing
commentary for all sorts of different football this year.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
But these are moves.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
It's hard to believe you're this far into the season
and you're guessing you're grasping, and they are. There's no
question about it. What Joe can do is only who's
sitting there next to him, ready to go with a
bat and ready to try to go up there and hit.
And what Dana could do now that the deadline has
passed and he did absolutely nothing from an offensive side,
is look to the miners now.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
He tried a lot of teams tried to do what
he supposedly tried to do, which is get a guy
that was just in town at first base and Yanni Diaz,
but the asking price.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
Jordan took care of that, he smashing a ball off
the guy's wrist and sending him out of the game.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
I thought he broke his finger to the way it looked,
I was like, my goodness, will you.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Realize some again.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
I don't know that any of the offensive players moved
for lower money deals or lower prospect return deals. I
don't know that any of them do much for the
Astros or end up having a great run with whomever
they went to. But to not acquire any of them
seems a little hollow. When if you were paying attention,
like specifically Josh Bell. Josh Bell cost the team that
(17:36):
traded for him nothing except for money. No prospects were
even moved in the deal, the option of either giving
them financial considerations or a player to be named later,
and they ended up just paying for it. That's certainly
something I would imagine Jim Crane and that he acquired
yuse Ka Kuchi for a big bump in where their
CBT hits, I think he would have probably said, yeah,
(17:58):
we can do that. Bunch of other lower quality hitters
were moved, but they're all higher quality hitters than what
Joe has had at his disposal.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Yeah, it's disappointing.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
And speaking of Joe, you know, you were talking about
just the offense in general, and he joined the Matt
Thomas Show for his weekly visit and spoke on that
very subject, saying that the lineup that you see night
in and night out, and a lot of the familiar
faces especially have gotten away from who they are collectively.
Speaker 5 (18:27):
You know what, in the past, we have been a
little bit more patient early in the count you know,
I think teams are coming after our hitters, especially because
we are being more aggressive. I think sometimes swinging less
can be helpful for an offense, and I think we
(18:47):
we have We have told our players, we have shown
the matrix, and they aware of it. It's just finding that.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
That come and relax, you know, being relaxed, being confident
to hte behind the count, understanding that we can we
are good hitters even when we behind the counts pictures
still got to execute the pictures to ghet us.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
Out when we behind the count. All those things are
are We've done a good job in the past. The
last couple of weeks we kind of got away from
who we are as an offense. But it's just it's
just a matter of just bringing them back and and
you know, show them that, hey, you know this is
going to pass. There's no reason to press at the
you know, at the bider's box. They just let the
(19:30):
uh let you know, we dictate our bets. That don't
let the picture dictate our bats and the outcome of
our bats. So it's working progress. It's work, it's working progress.
And and again, you know, it's been a you know,
three or four days where our offense kind of been
out of walk a bit. But we'll get it going here.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
You know, in the past during this run of greatness
the Astros have been on. August has traditionally not been
a good month for the team, no matter what the
schedule looked like, no matter you know, whether it was
home on the road. It just feels like August was
if they had some sort of swoon, that's when it happened.
The problem is this started before the calendar flipped, because
(20:09):
it's been about a week plus that this has been
going on, like really poorly. And you know who he's
talking about is like Jordon for example. The elements were
all there to recover. He wasn't playing a minute May
because the splits are ridiculous at this point.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
I don't know what the deal is with that.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
It's kind of like a microcosmo the team last year
and he beats up Andrew Heaney, but that did not happen.
Neither one of those things happened last night. He was
on the road and he got the best of them
and the entire lineup considering he gave up one hit. Yeah,
that's the focus on yord On is fair because of
who he is. His best hitter on the team, and
(20:46):
he's the only hitter on the team having an awesome
season that doesn't have a bone bruise. That's fair, I
get it. But the problem is nobody if he wasn't hitting,
it would be fine if anybody else was doing anything.
Now he's not hitting, right, that's the point you're making.
And teams aren't throwing in pitches. They're putting four fingers up.
(21:06):
They don't want any part of him because they're so
unafraid of the rest of the lineup because the rest
of the lineup is really really bad. And I don't
mean just the guys behind him, I mean the guys
in front of him.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
Oh, especially the guys in front of him.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
Al two Bays having a down year. For those that
haven't been paying attention to the first one hundred and
twelve games of the season and one of his least
productive seasons. Low ops plus, low ops, low everything. He's
having an okay year. He's got a ton of hits.
He's not having a let's bench him kind of year.
But he's not having a good year. He's having a
down year. Alex Bregman is having the worst year of
(21:39):
his career. He's in the lineup every single day because
you don't have anything else to play. He doesn't even
get days off because you don't even have anybody else
to play, and this is what's leading to your done. Obviously,
Yander Diez is having a fantastic singles season. A little
more extra based power I think was expected and unfortunately
hasn't really materialized. But yes, he gets on base more
than enough and gets enough hits. He's been the Astro's
(22:00):
best hitter since Kyle Tucker's been out by the way.
For those that aren't again paying attention, but I think
you guys are, so I'm not gonna get on him
and then it's over. It's not Joe a. Spotta's fault.
He's not in over his head, he's not pulling the
wrong strings. There's nothing else for him to do, in
my opinion, when you're sending up five consecutive hitters who
can't hit. That's what happened last night. That's what's happened
(22:21):
for way more than the four days that he just said.
We'll run through some of those numbers for you. I'm
sure you'll enjoy. It'll be very uplifting as we continue
here on the eighteen.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Hey, it's Hunner Brown Drag three catch every ass game
on Sports Talk seven ninety for the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Home of your ash Ros.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Welcome back into the eighteen Sports Talk seven ninety wex
back in the saddle. Ac over here, Dan Matthews, the
Showkiller is our producers. We take you up until six
o'clock tonight. Astros dropping the opener of their three game
series with the Rangers. Last night, Mariners were off and
by the way, I was all about, oh, whether making
(23:11):
up one of those games that the Mariners had played
two more of than the Astros. But they're going to
just switch that back on Thursday when the Astros are off.
I'd forgotten about that.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
They'll both play one sixty two.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
Don't worry, no, I know, I know, so I guess
you know, from that standpoint, it doesn't hurt as much
as maybe it could have last night if the Mariners
had played and they had also won. It's just, you know,
everything about Ryan Presley's appearance. I wasn't surprised at all
of that happened. That happens a lot more often than
(23:43):
not lately. Somehow doesn't have to be a home run.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
I mean, I don't think it would have been the
greatest idea with Marcus Simon up and so I think
they figured, well, we need to we need to get him.
And then later on in the game with Seeger do
up and Smith in the box, I wouldn't have thought
it was a horrible idea there, either to potentially pitch
around some guys didn't work out. You know, Presley threw
two pitches and got two groundouts to first, and then
(24:10):
he could not put Corey Seger away. He obviously got
ahead of him. He threw pitches that he liked and
Seger swung and missed, and then he made a mistake.
You know, he went fifteenth straight appearances without making a
big mistake. He had base runners, and he got in
and out of trouble a few times. But now twice
in his last four appearances he's allowed a run in
a one run game to tie the game. And this
one was an absolute missile because it caught way too
(24:33):
much of the plate. It wasn't the worst pitch from
an Astros reliever late in the game, because the Caleb
Ferguson pitch was even worse. It was literally a meatball,
also with two outside believe yeah, because he got two
strikeouts in the inning and left the runner and looked
good doing it. Yeah, he mean he did look good.
I'm not sure why they kept offering at the eighty
(24:54):
one mile an hour pitches. They must have had incredible
movement on them, and I do think they did. But
I think Caleb Ferguson I would have been pretty surprised
if the Astros were going to change him dramatically. So
I'm not sure how good his stuff is. His strikeouts
for nine was all right with the Yankees, but a
little bit like Kakuchia at some point the analytics and
the advanced numbers, that can't be the only thing you
(25:16):
care about. He was like their least effective reliever. Is
Era has only gone up here somehow, from being in
the low fives to up even higher because now he's
given up three earned runs in his three appearances, two
and two thirds worth of work. Because he just he's
not real good. I guess I'll say that. And now
(25:37):
we're looking at now both of the guys that that
they've acquired in trade, and you know, as I get
back to me, this is still much much, much, much
much more of a front office problem than a managerial problem.
The idea that there's some magic I can make my
guys hit that Joe A. Spotta could be, you know,
slipping in their milkshakes that they drink before games. He's
(25:58):
he's got to be at a loss for what do
you want me to do? I have to play somebody
at first base. Do I play the guy that can't
hit lefties and has a strikeout machine? Or do I
play the guy that is the worst funk of his
career and is pretty good fielder?
Speaker 5 (26:11):
You know?
Speaker 4 (26:11):
First with Singleton, Next is Dubont. He's got Jeremy Panya
in the five spot and he's just not having a
good year. And he's back in the second or third
or fourth or fifth offensive funk of his season where
if you throw it and it's not in the dirt,
he's probably going to swing at it. And he's just
in one of those spots again right now. For as
much as Jake Myers is arguably the best fielding center
(26:35):
fielder in baseball, he's among the worst center fielders pretty
much across the board in every other category. Chaz is
giving him a run for his money in worst arm.
But as an offensive player again, Jake Myers, since Kyle
Tucker has gone down, and this is an outfield as
a whole, problem. These guys can't hit and the amount
(26:57):
of it bats that are strikeouts is insane. He's hitting
one ninety one ninety four for about two months and
he's the everyday center fielder and Joe doesn't have any
other options. What's he supposed to do? Who's he supposed
to play? He gives Tray Cabbage's his few starts. He's
(27:18):
the guy they sent down. Alledmis Diaz is on the
Astros right now. He's on the bench. He plays for them.
Did you guys know this. He's one of the players
that Joe has to write on the lineup card every
day as a potential reserve, knowing full well he's not
a major league caliber baseball player.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
That's not on a spot a problem.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
That's why Tray Cabbage was getting at bats instead of
aleetmis Diaz the other night.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
And yet because of his available options, I guess if
you're going to keep Cabbage in the system and send
him down because he has value rather than have a
ledmis Diaz be essentially forced into involuntary retirement because if
the Astros did not have him employed, no other baseball
(28:02):
team would, just like was the case when they signed him.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
A couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
This offseason, do you anticipate, like we already know the
biggest fish on their own roster in that situation drowning. Yeah,
well that's what I'm saying going back. If you don't wow,
so you just gonna let him walk?
Speaker 3 (28:22):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (28:23):
I can't. I can't. Of all people, I cannot. I
can't ignore the numbers. They're the worst of his career.
As he's getting older, he's had a little bit of
I don't know what word I should use in front
of it. He's had bad luck this year. That is
fair for those that love analytics. Barreling up balls at
(28:44):
least as much as he has in the past. Hard
hit percentage is fine. His expected batting average, expected slugging
is much higher than the actual numbers. But again, the
actual numbers have to matter. They have to into your
decision making process. And when a player has been on
a steady decline, and I'll give you one aspect of
(29:05):
his numbers that are extremely black and white, by far,
the worst walk percentage of his entire career, by far,
the highest fifth percentage in his or chase percentage excuse me,
in his career, and those clearly go hand in hand,
he's swinging at more pitches out of the zone, and
to the beginning of the comment we just heard from Joe,
a spot it. He's as guilty as anybody else, and
(29:28):
of all people, he shouldn't be. He spent eight years,
seven plus years as a major leaguer not doing it,
and now he is doing it this year and it's
just falling right in line with everybody else. It's hurting
the team. I don't know if I can say we're
not who you know, Joe's saying, this isn't who we are.
Well more than half of his lineup is a bunch
of guys that haven't been out there as everyday players
really ever. I mean, pain has only been there for
(29:49):
two years. Singleton's not an every day guy, Jake's not
an every day guy. I mean, everybody down there, this
is who they are. They're they're kind of proving it
day after day after day. This is who they are.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
I guess my question about him to specifically would be okay,
and I'm not making I'm not can what's the word
I'm trying. I'm not conceding the offensive side of things,
But if you're gonna go in a different direction, from
Alex Bregman. You have to take into account as defense,
because even when his plate appearances are grotesque, let's just
(30:20):
take the very worst of the worst from Alex Bregman,
which is in large part this season, his defense more
often than not a stellar So if you're gonna replace him,
that's fine.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
I get that.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
I get wanting to do that, especially from the bat perspective,
but you have to get a guy that can play
the hot corner at least as well as him.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
No, you can't, That's what I'm saying. You can, but
you literally cannot do it if he's the best player. Right,
he's the best defensive player at that position in my opinion,
at least in the American League, And you might argue
overall in baseball. So you're getting worse.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
Just accept it. Now, it's how much worse are you getting.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
And how much better are you getting at the plate
if you're replacing him, Because.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
You can get better. It's just a matter of who
is that. That's that's a bigger question. And again, for
them to actually do that, they're they've got to. They
are hoping, just like they've hoped every other time the
player in the system, somebody there that can just step
up because they're not going to go out there and
spend free agent money, especially when there's probably nobody they
should spend it on, including him, including him. I was
(31:19):
about to say, not at that level. And the levels
are certainly a huge part of the story. That's way
off in the distance. Much more about what's wrong with
this team is where we're headed next here on the
A Team.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Adam and Adam are so Houston, thank you for asking.
They too have received spankings after staining their good school.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
Clues rolling down the hill at Miller Outdoor Theater. Bad Adams,
go to your.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
Room, work one Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
Most alarming offense number that you've comed over in the
last twenty four hours.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
When it comes to the Astros.
Speaker 4 (32:06):
Let's go to what they look like when the bases
are loaded, before we go to the phones.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
Before we go to the phone.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
So I think most people remember back to last year
when if you loaded the bases against the Astros, you
were cooked. The Astros were awesome with the bases loaded.
Ten Grand slams, second most in Major League Baseball last season.
There are two teams in twenty twenty four that have
zero Grand slams this season. That means they've not hit
(32:33):
a homer with the bases loaded. The Astros and the
Red Sox are those two teams. Ironically, they were both
in the top five last year. They had eight. I
just mentioned the Astros had ten. But more to the point,
in addition to the lack of extreme pop with the
basis loaded, what was on display last night was a
(32:53):
season long problem. You know, yaner Ds bats with the
bases loaded all the time. He's been up with the
bases loaded more than anyone else on the team, and
you'd be shocked with the kind of season he's having
that he isn't more successful with the bases loaded. But again,
it's a team wide thing. Are the White Sox bad?
They are bad. Are they historically bad? Yes, they are
(33:14):
historically bad. They're on a twenty one game losing streak.
They're a mere sixty one games under five hundred, a
mere sixty one games under five hundred. They're twelve losses
away from one hundred loss season. They're gonna push one
twenty five this season. And they are the only team
in baseball with a lower OPS when the bases are
loaded than the Houston Astros. They're the only team scoring
(33:34):
fewer runs per game since the All Star Break than
the Houston Astros. If you hit two fifteen with an
OPS of five point thirty five, you're being optioned to
the miners, or you're never playing baseball again. That's the
entire team in twenty twenty four. When the bases are loaded,
when the pitcher is supposed to be under the most pressure. Now, granted,
(33:59):
maybe he brings his best pressure pitches, but you're not
facing the ass of the staff very often in this instance.
Sometimes you're facing their closers and plus level relievers. It
could be anytime in the game, quite honestly, but this
is incredible considering they're basically one of the two or
three worst teams in baseball with the bases loaded. They've
(34:20):
played half a season without Kyle Tucker quite obviously, or
close to it. Last year they were basically the best.
They had a nine to thirty six OPS with the
bases loaded.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Last year.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
They're five to thirty five this year, a four hundred
point drop off as a team. Again, it's not really
you know, clearly the top guys aren't having the individual
seasons they had a year ago. Altuve Alvarez, Tucker Bregman,
all very das last year, all really really good with
the bases loaded. They haven't been really really good this year.
(34:50):
It's it's the rest of the team though. It's the
massive impot They're getting nothing. They're not moving a runner up,
they're not hitting a sack fly, they're not grounding out
where it forces a run, striking out over and over
and over again. That's the most eye popping number for today. Sadly,
I think I'll have a different one tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
I hope I can't. They can't lose this.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
By the way, I'm mad because I was saying how
much they should have swept the Rays over the weekend.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
They should get win.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
If you can't score, take two out of three at
the most, sweep them at best.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
And yeah, that was it. I mean, especially Saturday. Yeah,
I know, I know. Pitching's been fine.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
And and Kukuchi was the only guy to get a
win and was awesome in his debut. We haven't even
had a chance to talk about that because by the
time you got back he's almost ready to pitch again.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
Look at how they did get the win. The Rays
had to kick the ball around right to get that
third run across to give the Astros a one run.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
That was one of those games where in the back
of your mind you're thinking about the offense and you're like,
they're getting lucky here, and then the next two days
unfold the way they did. You get a solo home
run from John Singleton and you get shut out one
nothing on Sunday afternoon, which, by the way, was one
of the most miserable experiences of my life for a
game I watched while floating in a pool.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
Yeah, it's hard to make you feel bad when you're
doing things like that. And the comment we heard from
Joe Spot a little while ago when he was on
with Matt Thomas that we replayed for you. He said,
the last couple of days, and you know, the offense
in a bit of a funk. They've had thirteen games
this year with four or fewer hits. Four of those
games have come in the last seven days. This is
beyond that. This is again, it's not an individual thing.
(36:26):
It's not blame it on one person that's in uniform.
They don't have the right players right now to expect
them to get out of it, just like we didn't
expect them to score five plus runs per game. When
Tucker initially went out, I think we knew that was
fool's gold, right, I think we knew what was going
(36:46):
to end. I know we didn't ever want to hear say, oh,
look how good they are with Kyle. It was so
clearly not who they are. They should be somewhere in
the middle. But all they've done this year offensively have
played at the extremes. They were really bad at the
beginning of the year and the pitching was awful. They
were pretty good during the middle portion of the year
in a long stretch, a longer stretch of the year.
That's how they won fifty out of those eighty three
(37:08):
games and got all the way into first place. And
then now they're back in an offensive funk. The difference
is they're kind of hovering around five hundred seven to
ten seven and eleven, eight and eleven because their pitching
has actually been very, very good, especially the starting pitching.
And you know, Kakuchi, for one appearance so far, guys
out there setting records, getting whiffs better than he has
(37:28):
at any point in his career. Bigger challenge. Rangers aren't
unbelievable offensively, but the Rays are definitely one of the
worst currently one of the worst offensive teams in baseball.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
He took advantage of that.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
How long has the Doulas Garcia been batting seventh for them? Well,
Josh Young allows for it. Uh huh now more than
to be down though, huh correct? I mean, and he
for the most part, he had a big hit, or
he had a hit. I don't want to say it
was a big hit.
Speaker 3 (37:52):
What do you have a single? Yeah, it was a
hard hit single.
Speaker 4 (37:55):
And they easily got one of their slowest runners first
to third because the astra miserable outfield arms Chas McCormick,
and this, of course they run on him. And then
the sack fly is the throw that most people are
referencing because it was so far off line it allowed
Adulest to go first to third. They're just not It's
something every team in baseball knows, every third base coach knows,
(38:16):
and all the players as part of a scouting report knows,
and it's just who they are. It's just unfortunate, and
it's now unless Leone earns more playing time, he has
a plus arms.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
So as Tucker, that's it's just right now.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
He's out, So they've been playing guys for a two
month period with below average.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
They really have been playing even with as many guys
as are in the lineups that are familiar faces, and
we've gone over at nauseum this first hour just how
bad they are offensively, the ones that are in the lineup.
It really does feel like for most of this season
the Astro has been playing with like at least unarm
tied behind their back in some way, shape or form,
whether it's pitching, whether it's I mean, it just it
(38:56):
does show you that even with the lack of moves
that we've talked about with Dana Brown, there is a
plethora of players that are hurt that either aren't coming
back or just haven't come back yet. That just feels like,
just almost by name, if not actual performance, they would
reverse their fortunes drastically if they were a part of things.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
You could be talking about the Mariners with what they've
gone through offensively, especially currently with Julio and JP. You'd
be talking about the Rangers with Josh Young and their
litany of pitchers that surezers back injured very Verlandery this year. Obviously,
de Gram and Maley have not come back yet. Bradford
just came back. All these teams that have dealt with it.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
And Erlander's gonna pass him on the strikeouts list again.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
There's a real good chance if his next two rehab
starts go well, you're right, he could.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
All right, our number one just about in the books
here as we get you ready for our number two,
need to check in on how the Texans are doing
in Ohio. Plus, there's some sad news about the Texans recently,
Jakobe Jones passing away very very young. I might add
the cause of death has been released, and we'll tell
you what that is. I was I was mildly surprised
(40:07):
on this just because of the age. So we'll tell
you what that was. And we'll check in on Bobby
Slowik and the rest of the crew as they start
counting down to the Pittsburgh game coming up on Friday night.
That'll be preseason game number two, although I feel like
it should be preseason game number one since they have
an extra. We'll get to all that next year in
the four o'clock hour on the A Team.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
The A Team.
Speaker 3 (40:28):
I want to tell you.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Guys right now about men's tea clinic and your level
of testosterone where it needs to be. If it's not
at peak levels, Men's Tea Clinic can get it right
back to there, and once they do at one of
their five Houston area locations, you'll get back to being yourself.
Because if low testosterone is plaguing you, or if you
even think it might be, first of all, you need
(40:50):
to find out for sure. But secondly, once Men's Tea
Clinic is able to get your levels up back where
they need to be, you will feel the difference in
so many different ways. Obviously you'll be able to answer
or the bell in the bedroom, but you'll have weight loss,
muscle mass, hair, vitality, and just a general well being
that you didn't have before. If your testosterones were levels
(41:10):
were waning, or even really really low, you can get
it checked out with a simple blood test at five
Houston area locations The Heights, Cyprus, Paarland, Pasadena and Spring
start the journey back to being you. Will you that
you know by going to Men's Teaclinic dot com. That's
Men's Teaclinic dot Com.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams
series Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
A our number two underway here on Sports Talk seven
ninety it is the A Team. Wexnac with you on
a Tuesday edition of the program. Been discussing a lot
about the Astros after that miserable, disgusting, no good, very
bad walk off lost to the stupid Rangers last night.
Speaker 3 (42:03):
They didn't have to be seeing us.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
How three of the last four innings the Astros left
the base is juiced and only scratched a few runs across.
By the way, something from over the weekend, and I
know I'm not gonna get this exactly right, Spencer Arraghetti
in his last how many starts the Astros have scratched across?
Speaker 3 (42:22):
How many runs or haven't?
Speaker 4 (42:24):
They've lost all of his last six starts, but over
his last five starts he's allowed eleven runs. Well, he's
been out there, which is very good in the ra
in the mid threes. They've scored five times, they've been
shut out twice. This is the kind of stuff you
normally put on a starting pitcher who's your ace through
April and May, when every trip through the rotation it's
(42:45):
your a's versus their ace.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
And you know we saw it with Verlander.
Speaker 4 (42:48):
We saw it with Randy Johnson, even I think everybody
remembers Roger Clemens season where they they couldn't score for him,
and he was dropping out this low two s high
one Zra and the team wasn't even winning his starts,
let alone him getting wins. And that's clearly what's not
what's happening here. Just each time he's gone out there,
they have been unable to hit whomever the other team
(43:09):
has thrown out there. In this latest instance, it was
an opener and he was a major, major trouble in
the first inning, and then Jeremy Payne came up to
the plate and he threw six balls and he swung
at three of them and missed. And that's set in
motion an afternoon of not being able to get much going.
The pitcher that followed just blew through the Astros through
(43:30):
the middle innings, and they have a very good closer
and that's stuck on zero. But it's really impressive to
see this late into his rookie season, in a year
where he's pitched more than ever at the major league
level for the first time ever, and some of his
best work has come this late in the season. Twelve strikeouts, heck.
Over the weekend. Again, this is a little bit of
(43:51):
a Rai's help. Twice in three days they set the
new individual record for most strikeouts in a game by
a pitcher, Kakuchi with his eleven to open the series
and Arraghetti with his twelve. That's again a little bit
of a raised issue, I think. But he threw the
ball very, very well. It's funny if you missed his
(44:12):
post game he was asked about how he felt in
the bullpen. He said, this is the worst bullpen I've
had all season. You know, the preparation for the game
and it just doesn't usually translate. Sometimes it's really good
and you think, okay, I've really got it. I need
to hold some of this for the game. And sometimes
it's vice versa.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
You just like to think.
Speaker 4 (44:29):
You get six innings, allow one run from your starter,
and you lose both games. Each of the last two days,
they've been unable to get a win despite being delivered
the best you could hope for, I think. And then
it also sets the table for your seven, eight nine,
your seven a braw scoreless. You had a one run
lead given to Presley in between their two outings. He
(44:49):
gave up the one home run and then Hater needed
a lot of pitches, but he did strike out the
side and did not allow a run in the ninth.
It likely prevented the thought of sending him back out
there for the tenth. If you noticed, he actually threw
one more pitch than the Rangers closer, and the Rangers
closer got six outs on just twenty five pitches.
Speaker 3 (45:09):
Maybe something more is going on with the team.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
That's what Sharon out in Paarland thinks is seven one, three, two,
seven ninety Sharon, what's going on?
Speaker 7 (45:19):
Hey, guys, thanks so much for taking my call. Yeah,
this this team is so much better than what they're doing.
And I just feel like it's more than logistics and talent.
They have the talent, but they just they just don't
look like they have the motivation. And you know, right
after jose O Bray got let go needed to be
(45:41):
let go. They had a you know, they were doing
well offensive wise and struggling pitching wise, but doing well.
And of course we're missing Kyle Tucker. But I'm wondering
what the batting coaches are doing. I'd love your thoughts
on that. What the heck are the batting coaches doing.
They're supposed to be helping these guys figure out what
they're missing and what they're doing. And I know they
(46:04):
can do better. I know they can do better, and
I personally would like to see Keratini play a little more.
Sometimes he can bring something to the plate. And what
happened to Cessor Salazar? Did he go back down to
triple A? Because he can hit at times? I would
if I were Joe, I would try some different things,
(46:26):
and you know, try something different. If you keep doing
the same thing over and over again wanting it to
work and it doesn't work, that doesn't work. So thanks
for taking my call.
Speaker 4 (46:36):
A lot of things to address, and we appreciate you
hanging with us and getting through. We will hit them
all the last part, you know, doing the same thing
every day. I kind of went through why I'm not
I don't have any issue with what Joe's doing because
there's nothing to do. People complained about the order for
a month at the beginning of the season, and that
wasn't him, that was the players. Now they're going to
(46:56):
complain about who he's playing or the order in which
he's putting them out there. It's not him. You can
try new things. I'll play pedro Leone. I'll give Trey
Cabbage some at bats. I'll start a Ledmis Diaz on
his first day. I'll play it, Maurice. You to Dubon
at first. I'll play John Singleton at first, almost exclusively
for a month. This is who he has to work with,
and these are the reasons why what's happening is happening.
(47:18):
It's because of who they are, not because, in my opinion,
not because of what he is doing. Sayesar salves Are
is the catcher down to triple A again, he could
actually be an option for just the reasons you suggested.
His bats have been much more productive than just about
anybody that they have brought into the mix. I don't
think they want to carry three catchers, but I think
they would if they really felt like as a lefty
(47:41):
off the bench, he could provide something with his bat.
He's not really known for his bat. We can't ignore
what he did here as a major leaguer, albeit briefly
this season. He certainly handles the team I think very
well behind the plate, handles the pitching staff very well,
and I think he's I think he's a major league
caliber backup catcher. You said, Dick Krottini play more. I
think when Karattini returned, Joe's pretty intrigued by playing them both,
(48:04):
and maybe he'd be even more intrigued by playing them
both if they had a third catcher. He's been willing
to use either one of them at DH now recently,
and thus that gives you the opportunity of Karattini is
the DH to potentially pinch hit for him late in
the game, more likely pinch run for him later in
the game. But the biggest topic you bring up is
probably the best one, and most of the time, for
(48:25):
the thirty plus years I've been talking about baseball, I'm
not big on It's the batting coaches. What are they doing?
Why aren't they fixing this? I can't tell you that
I haven't had that thought though this time, And I
hate to say it because he's the same two batting coaches,
Troy Snicker and Alex Sintron, who have been here to
(48:45):
help these players get more out of them. Have a
plan when these guys attack, teams, attack starters, a game plan,
per game, general philosophy, all these things. But I'm not
going to ignore my eyes again I'm not going to
ignore the numbers again and a little bit if it
has to do what we've been talking about for better
than an hour today. Who is going out there and
(49:06):
the caliber of players they are, but they aren't doing
the things with two strikes you should see a major
league team do. They're not doing things with how they
handle the bat that major league teams should do, and
if the players aren't doing it, then it is on
the coaches to make sure they start doing it. I
do think there's something that could be done on that front.
(49:27):
It's the blame game. At some point gets played to
the point where you make a change. And I don't
really think you're gonna see a managerial change. There's only
so much you can do with the roster. Pitching coaches.
I think we're fine with and should be. Yeah, you
could make that change with fifty games to go, I
don't know that it's really going to do anything. And
for all that stuff I just said about how to
handle things, I still was extremely annoyed and non supportive
(49:54):
of Jake Myers bunting the runners over in the game yesterday. Yeah,
if you stink, why are you making it easier for
the other team? They cannot get you off the field
unless they get twenty seven or thirty outs.
Speaker 3 (50:09):
Why did you just give them one? It's I don't
like it. I don't think I'm ever going to like it.
Speaker 4 (50:15):
Extra innings we can always discuss because with the runner
on second in certain situations, parameters are different. I don't Sally,
don't have any interest in a team that cannot get
hits just and that's the I think people are listening closely, Well,
do you realize what you're saying? Wex So you're saying
the team can't get any hits. So by bunting the
runners over, you don't need a hit. All you have
(50:35):
to do is hit a fly ball, and the runner
from third scores hit a grounder behind the runners, they
get to move up ninety feet or potentially score.
Speaker 3 (50:42):
That's all.
Speaker 4 (50:42):
Look at Jeremy Payne and he hit one forty feet.
They gave him a hit, but it scored the run
with the bases loaded, only because the bases were loaded.
But I can't in good conscience agree with giving outs away,
especially where it was where it was bottom of the order.
After Jake mart who's getting Who's gonna do the good
bat handling? After him, Who's going to make contact after him?
(51:05):
They had fifteen strikeouts from five through nine last night,
and that's who you're bunting into, and that's exactly what
they did.
Speaker 3 (51:14):
So I take it. You really hate it when al
two v bunts. It's well, Al.
Speaker 4 (51:18):
Tuove is almost always bunting for a hit. There's a difference.
You're not giving them an out necessarily if you do
it right. Bunted for hits, that's okay. Didn't he try
to bunt last night at one of his at bats?
Speaker 2 (51:29):
I think the second at bat al Twov actually was
he was showing bunt and then it didn't.
Speaker 3 (51:34):
He ended up Actually a lot.
Speaker 4 (51:36):
Of times when they show bunt, then they pulled the
bat back and the umpire throws his right arm out
because it was a perfect pitch, but they were really
just trying to show.
Speaker 3 (51:43):
That wasn't happening last night. Believe it or not. I
was really good, but those were some of the times
he wasn't in his own Could.
Speaker 4 (51:48):
You could you get a better pitcher in front of
our conversation, like Andrew Heeney is not good and has
miserable history against these astros, and they couldn't do anything.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
You hit the ball over the fence in six innings
and nothing else. It really does look like a funk
that is team wide. But I can't call it that.
Speaker 3 (52:11):
Why not but you're watching or listening to it.
Speaker 2 (52:14):
Because I think funks, and maybe this is short sided
on my part, but I just think in baseball, funks
are just so much more individual base I've heard the cliches, well,
hitting is contagious, well, you could say, and I've heard
this said that not hitting is also contagious when you're
in a funk like this, But I just i've collectively
(52:35):
the fact that it's all happening at the same time.
Speaker 3 (52:37):
I get that.
Speaker 2 (52:38):
I just refuse to call it a team wide funk.
I think it's just honestly, they look like April and
May's astros more often than not lately, and that was
as much individual as anything else. So I'm not gonna
call it a funk, but I sure hope they break
out of whatever it is tonight individually. Here as we
get you ready for Game two of this one, more
(52:58):

Back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler the.
Speaker 2 (54:04):
Eighty eighteen rolling along here on Sports Talk seven to ninety.
Speaker 4 (54:16):
Getting you ready for Zach Decenzo's Major League debut tonight
as the Astros designated hitter in his first day as
a major leaguer. Made that roster move earlier today, Trey
Cabbage sent down Zach Decenzo brought up he wasn't at
Triple A particularly long after his initial promotion from Double
A to Triple A. Also had been hurt for much
of this year, so not a tremendous amount of time
(54:38):
on the field this year. He had to say goodbye
on the forty man roster to Dylan Coleman to make
all of that happen. The lineup looks pretty similar otherwise, though,
al Tuba, Bregman, Alvarez, Ds Paynas Singleton, You're one through
six again. Decenzo gets the seventh spot, so he'll be providing.
Speaker 3 (54:57):
Some support.
Speaker 4 (55:00):
Hey, you don't want you wanna pitch around John, because
I'm next for John Singleton. Jake Myers back in centerfield.
This two thirty average and six eighty nine ops, one
ninety four average the last two months, and Chas McCormick
he will beat ninth.
Speaker 6 (55:13):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (55:14):
I guess I could say one good reason to have
Descenzo make his debut today of all days of this series,
or any one coming up. Tyler Malley's gonna make his
season debut today. He had six appearances in the minor
leagues this season. His last one was as a pitcher
for their Triple eighteen. It's the Round Rock Express. They
(55:35):
hosted the Space Cowboys and Zach Decenzo was in the
lineup that day, doubled off of Malley, scored a couple
of runs, walked a couple of times that day. So
I'm sure he is sharing that knowledge with his teammates
and that he just saw him on July thirty.
Speaker 2 (55:51):
First, Well, during the break, I showed a meme to
my co host here and it was a very WEX
moment in his reaction.
Speaker 4 (56:00):
And you know the meme where if you know the meme,
it's that popular already. I think it is from what
it let's see what time did they lose last night?
Ten to twenty something?
Speaker 3 (56:08):
Well this was sent out at ten forty seven pm.
Speaker 4 (56:11):
Okay, so it's that popular while being posted roughly eighteen
hours ago.
Speaker 2 (56:17):
It's fresh as far as the content that relates to
the last night's game. Well, but the meme remains like
you can do anything with this. It's basically the stages
of putting on a clown mask. Okay, for this one,
it was a five step or some of them are four.
Sometimes they go in little blocks, other times like this,
it's a list, like you can put your makeup on
(56:39):
a little bit more quickly. You only need three steps.
Correct your red nose. Maybe you're maybe you're in the
car touching it up like my wife, And why are
you driving like this because it's the freeway.
Speaker 4 (56:47):
Where are all going that she had to dress up
like a clown. Oh, you made a regular makeup exactly.
Speaker 2 (56:52):
So the subject of this one in the pictures is
going to be Joe Aspota, So he's going to go
from Joaspota's face to a clown exactly, got it? Starting
Dubon in, Chaz has a regular face, got it. He
puts on the white base with pinch hitting cabbage. A
little bit more comes around, like the eyes and the
(57:14):
lips and the blush, pinch hitting singleton. Okay, the wig,
the rainbow variety gets placed as he brings in Caleb
Ferguson in the bottom of the tenth and then he
is in full clown garb as keeping Caleb Ferguson in
to face Josh Smith happens and My favorite part of
(57:34):
that whole scenario is that after I showed you that.
Speaker 4 (57:36):
You go look at the names. What's he supposed to do?
It's all in a nutshell and a meme form. It's
basically what I've been saying throughout the day. You know,
I'm not gonna say he's not maybe making a mistake
or he has done things that I think aren't putting
his team in the best situation. But you have to
recognize what he's working with, and that list is a
very good indicator of it. I mean, Maurici Dubon is
(57:56):
a career backup who's basically been used like a starter
with Tucker out chas McCormick is playing himself off of
anybody's roster with the way this season has gone unfortunately
for him. Trick Habags just did play himself off of
the roster so they can make this latest move. Caleb
Ferguson was extremely expendable from the Yankees bullpen as a
(58:17):
left handed reliever with pretty good strikeout numbers but terrible success.
And John Singleton has played zero full major league seasons
before this major league season, where he was he might
have been able to win the first base job but
if you remember when both he and Abraid were on
the team at the beginning of the year and everybody
was playing losing baseball, he couldn't do anything either. So
(58:40):
it's not just that he's outplayed him, which he clearly has,
and he's not the reason they're losing. But this was
a position you wanted to upgrade this year after a
Bray and just simply did not. He's not gonna he's
not having the worst season ever. He's not killing the team.
He's not the only reason they're losing. But you're playing
(59:00):
all the players you mentioned there are all substandard major
league players, none of whom have played well enough to
be in your everyday lineup, and most of whom are
in the Astros everyday lineup, or they're the ones he's
turning to two pinch hit for the guys in the
everyday lineup.
Speaker 2 (59:16):
Makes me wonder what the cost was to get YONDI Diaz.
That cost would have been pretty significant.
Speaker 1 (59:23):
M H.
Speaker 2 (59:23):
I mean, but at least he would have been under
team control. Yes, there's some value in the return, unlike Kakuchi.
Speaker 4 (59:29):
Absolutely so, I'm not super concerned if I'm Dana Brown
in that not only is he under control.
Speaker 6 (59:35):
He is.
Speaker 4 (59:37):
He's gonna make some money, but he's certainly not yet
going to break the bank. And even if he did
kind of do that, that's.
Speaker 3 (59:44):
A year away and you might actually want to keep
that player.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
And in this lineup, he's a significant upgrade. Yeah, that
was probably shooting for the stars, which is what other
teams were doing.
Speaker 3 (59:54):
They all failed.
Speaker 4 (59:55):
And this you're talking about a team that was considerably
definitely fire sailing, the team that came to town and
won the series. I mean, yeah, I remember they sent
out so much talent Major League were in the race
for the wild card.
Speaker 3 (01:00:08):
Talent that will help other teams that they sent him to,
and they.
Speaker 4 (01:00:11):
Didn't were unable to accept anybody's offer for Yandy Diaz.
But yondy Diaz, Josh Bell, there's six or seven other
names that were moved or could have been moved, and
the Astros are just unable to add any of them.
So again, I don't think tonight's any different now that
Desnzo is here.
Speaker 3 (01:00:28):
This is what he has to work with.
Speaker 4 (01:00:30):
He has to find nine hitters every night, and he
is one thing I do like about Joe, and it
doesn't always work because who he's working with he's extremely
unafraid to use these guys fifth inning, sixth inning, seventh inning,
eighth inning, out of players by the time to get
to extra I don't care.
Speaker 3 (01:00:46):
He's trying to win the game. Bench is emptied. It's
okay to me.
Speaker 4 (01:00:49):
It's in this day and age of Major League baseball,
you can get to the extra innings with having a
bench left. It's not that you know, you might be
better off saving a guy to pinch run, maybe if
your catcher's the last out of an inning, or to
pinch run when you get a guy to third base,
or to have a little maybe one or two guys
that really are an upgrade from who you have out there.
But you're playing one inning, two innings, three innings tops,
(01:01:11):
it's not a big deal.
Speaker 3 (01:01:12):
Use him.
Speaker 5 (01:01:12):
I like it.
Speaker 4 (01:01:13):
No, he definitely he spreads the wealth, let's put it
that way. Well, he also has reasons to like. John
Singleton starts, let's say tonight, like he is against a
right handed pitcher. Well, when the left handed reliever comes in,
and now Singleton's batting one fifty five against lefties, you
kind of don't want to send him.
Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
Up there, right, So you send out Dubon real quick
a note on the passing of Jacoby Jones, and Aaron
Wilson tweeted this out.
Speaker 3 (01:01:37):
I'm sure others have as well.
Speaker 2 (01:01:40):
The Corners office in New Orleans released his official cause
of death. Of course, he played for the Texans first,
and the Ravens had that big return in the Super
Bowl against the forty nine Ers as elite.
Speaker 3 (01:01:52):
Joe Flacco won his loan at Championship that year. Thanks
to Jacoby. He is the second highest rated quarterback and
Joe flocko.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
Oh my gosh, it should be lower. He's not even
a starter. So he passed away obviously very young age
of forty. Hypertension. Now this says hypertensive, but I think
it meant to say hypertension was the cause of death
and the manner of death was natural.
Speaker 3 (01:02:17):
But guy, that we both covered extensively, frankly.
Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
As the Texans were, you know, becoming that team that
was electric, he was a big part of that. Unfortunately,
one of the most famous or infamous plays in Texans history.
He was a part of muffing that punt, and that's
what was so painful about seeing what he did in
a Ravens uniform. A few seasons later, maybe I think
it might have been the next season because I believe
(01:02:43):
it was against the Ravens that that happened.
Speaker 3 (01:02:45):
So a lot of irony packed in there. But that
was a guy that was fun to cover.
Speaker 2 (01:02:50):
That was a guy that when you were gonna go
interview him after practice or in the locker room, you
knew you were going to get a fantastic SoundBite, You're
going to probably have a pretty good conversation. When the
microphones in the camp were turned off as well, and
I had no idea what happened, it was obviously a
huge shock, But that is that's crazy that, at age forty,
(01:03:12):
a professional athlete hypertension.
Speaker 3 (01:03:15):
That's a shock to me.
Speaker 4 (01:03:16):
Yeah, overnight in his sleep from heart disease congress by
long term high blood pressure hypertensive cardiovascular disease essentially as
it was called. What you know from the football standpoint,
The thing that stuck with me from immediately after his
departure and on to Buffalo or Onto Baltimore is I
could never figure out during his five years there why
(01:03:38):
they would not use him more on kick returns, Like
he went to Baltimore in the first two years there
after playing five years in Houston, He had more kick
returns in two seasons in Baltimore than he did in
his five seasons combined in Houston, and was arguably the
best kick returner in the NFL for all three of
(01:03:59):
his full seasons in Baltimore. And you mentioned the return
he had in the Super Bowl. He was incredible. He
turned the lights out. He turned the lights out. So yeah,
that kind of bothered me. And it was long before
it was before Baltimore was smart. I was saying as well,
he was here, like why don't why don't you use him?
It's kind of obvious with his return work on punts
and clearly how he I think there's always, like every
(01:04:21):
every head coach is concerned about ball security on returns,
but when you're in the end zone on enough of them.
And he returned one kick for a touchdown with the
Texans in five years and four for a touchdown with
Baltimore in three years. I think if he mishandled a
kick or two versus the touchdowns he got and everything else,
(01:04:41):
you probably could have managed your way through it.
Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
That was absolute. Just that moment where he muffed though,
that was that was pretty brutal that day. And then
to see what he did there that hurts. We will
have our signature segment, say what coming up next?
Speaker 3 (01:04:57):
You don't have to be a peppy get your lady
to work at your and mister bone, that's right, jess.
Speaker 1 (01:05:01):
A's just my device to play Sports Talk seven ninety
on iHeart Radio.
Speaker 4 (01:05:06):
Sigat segment time on a Tuesday, it means say what.
One of the first voices you heard has been featured
prominently and a lot of say what moments since both
ourselves here at iHeartRadio and NBC. Peacock has been broadcasting
the Olympics, Snoop loving the dressage, and other assorted events
(01:05:30):
that he'd never heard of or seen before throughout this
so pretty much everything he's done has been in a
one almost now two week stretch of say what moments.
But I'm gonna I'm gonna go to today's activity on
the hardwood in France today, eight teams remained heading into
play today. Now only four left, four down, two to
(01:05:51):
go for the Americans to win gold. Takes six wins
now in men's basketball to win a gold medal in
session preferably, but you could get away with it. Early
in the tournament was just round robin play. You don't
necessarily need six for them, yet it feels like six.
And now it is elimination play. So four teams were
eliminated today. I would say the second best player in
(01:06:14):
the Olympics that's not on the American team was eliminated,
and probably a couple others. But Shake Gildess Alexander's team
audios out of the tournament, valiant effort and trying to
come back against the home country. France advanced. I wouldn't
necessarily say behind either of their big men. Rudy Gobert
barely played and now they're gonna have a little bit
(01:06:36):
of a controversy. Did he not play because he was
hurt because he had a couple of fingers on his
left hand taped and he said I had surgery and
they said he didn't have surgery. He didn't play because
he's not really helpful against the team they were playing,
even though he's I guess, one of the best players
defensively in the NBA. So we're told anyway, Victor made
(01:06:57):
an impact because he's not useless out there, even though
he had a poor offensive day and they won rather easily.
So Dylan Brooks in Canada ousted, Germany advanced and the
say what is? The US team turned in their most
dominant performance of the tournament. They won by thirty five today.
Do you know who scored thirty points against them? That
(01:07:19):
used to wear a Rockets uniform, that plays for Brazil? Yep,
that used how long ago? His last NBA game was
with the Rockets during the twenty twenty one season.
Speaker 3 (01:07:32):
Oh gosh, twenty twenty one.
Speaker 4 (01:07:35):
He scored more points today than he scored in that
season for Houston.
Speaker 3 (01:07:40):
Oh my gosh, I mean, is this like an end
of the bench. Of course it is.
Speaker 4 (01:07:44):
And he scored thirty in a blowout loss because the
rest of the quarter team was Brazil wex.
Speaker 3 (01:07:52):
I don't know who.
Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
I don't even remember who was on I have blacked
out like three straight seasons of Rockets basketball when they were.
Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
None other than Bruno Koboklo. Yeah, I would have.
Speaker 4 (01:08:02):
He scored thirty in a thirty five point loss where
the Americans again didn't have to really play stressful basketball.
No one played even twenty one minutes, spread it all around,
everybody got out there, and it's their fourth straight game
of one hundred plus.
Speaker 2 (01:08:15):
Isn't Bruno the guy that Steven Silas was like, yeah,
I know we've got outbranching down Bruno Fernando. Okay, I
knew it was a guy named Bruno that shouldn't have
been the starting center ever.
Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
So say what kind of this is derived from US?
There's four teams left, which one is going to knock
them off?
Speaker 4 (01:08:36):
France and Germany led by very World War two flavors
Shrewder and Franz Wagner, your favorite ex Rock. Those two
are playing one another and US will get a second crack,
or vice versa. Serbia we'll get a second crack at
Team USA after getting throttled by them in their opening
(01:08:56):
game of pool play.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
That's Nikola Jokicic's team, the Joker.
Speaker 4 (01:09:00):
In order to win the gold, the best team in
the tournament by leaps and bounds will have to beat
a team of Nikola Jokic and Boyanovich and a couple
other players who won't dribble off their foot, and then
the winner of Germany and France.
Speaker 3 (01:09:15):
It could happen.
Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
It could happen because they have not played the games yet,
and forty minutes of basketball could bring you some surprising things.
Speaker 3 (01:09:23):
Is it bad that I want it to happen. I mean,
as I don't think you should to be right to
be spiteful to.
Speaker 4 (01:09:31):
Me, No, it's not about you so much as Ita,
I think is actually playing better and better, and they're
just I think if you, even though maybe they get tired,
if you took six of them and the other six
of them and entered them in the field, they'd play
for the gold medal every time. Any six, any of
(01:09:53):
the six, Yes, split them anyway you want, you want
Derek White and the other five worst players out there. Sure,
the other team's probably going to beat the them and
blow them out, And I still as long as they
don't get run down, it's just just But again to me,
it's all like, how can you not think they're gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:10:07):
Win because they're nearly lost to sound.
Speaker 4 (01:10:11):
Games that don't matter. They're exhibition games. They didn't play
like they're going to play in these games exhibition. What
they're doing now, they're trying all that's all they're doing.
But they're not playing super hard. The other team's probably
play harder than them because it's the only way they
can do any exhibition games. They should be blowing them
out by sixty five. I mean, they're not the Trotters,
I mean the other team's not a goof off. I
(01:10:31):
was told they were better than the original Dream Team
by a bunch of jackasses.
Speaker 2 (01:10:34):
In the mouth.
Speaker 4 (01:10:34):
I'm not saying they shouldn't have had an easier time
with them in exhibition play, but the games that have mattered,
they have had no trouble with any of them, including
the team they're about to play as I expected.
Speaker 3 (01:10:47):
Maybe it was just me.
Speaker 2 (01:10:48):
What was the team that lost that didn't gold medal
that they had to come back and be the redeem
team with kobean Company back in two thousand and.
Speaker 3 (01:10:57):
Eight or twelve.
Speaker 4 (01:10:58):
I have to get the full roster beyond Lebron. Eight
was the Redeem team redeemed team? Dan Lebron would have
been part of both. Yeah, I just wait. Two thousand
and eight was the redeem twelve was the redeemed team
in two thousand and eight? Was the team that got beaten?
That's what I thought was they got.
Speaker 3 (01:11:21):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:11:23):
I was just wondering because that should have never ever, ever,
ever happened, but it did. They had to even have
a Redeem team. Carmelo Anthony, I think, was featured prominently a.
Speaker 4 (01:11:35):
Mecca Okafour, Sean Marion, lamar Odom, Richard Jefferson, Carlos Boozer.
Speaker 3 (01:11:41):
Okay, that right there.
Speaker 4 (01:11:42):
Tell me the team that actually the mattered part. Yeah,
because those guys suck Ai Steph Marberry, Alan Iverson was
on a team that didn't gold medal, Wade Carmelo, Lebron,
Amari Stodemar, and Tim Duncan.
Speaker 2 (01:11:57):
Well, that was your problem right there. They were too
boring to win the gold. That's for Missy who I
know is probably listening and I just saw today. I
that's what was the first five I tried to besides
the guy that lied to the blind man who Carlos Boozer.
Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
Richard Jefferson, lamar Odom, Sean Marion, a Mecca Oka four, So.
Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
Dick Jefferson, a guy who got picked up at the
Bunny Ranch Oka four who has no business being on
any Olympic team.
Speaker 3 (01:12:29):
Who is the other one? Oh, he was a collegiate
player at the time. Exactly, None of those guys have
any business team Just note this.
Speaker 4 (01:12:36):
Heading into that Olympic tournament, here's your say. What The
US men's basketball team in history had lost only twice ever,
each time to the Soviet Union.
Speaker 3 (01:12:48):
They lost their first game. That's a third ever loss.
Speaker 4 (01:12:51):
They lost their fourth game that now matched basketball US
basketball history with two losses in Olympic play, and then
in the Semis they lost to Argentina. Who was the
coach A bunch of guests. You're really good at this stuff.
I'm really bad at this stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:13:05):
I'm gonna guess it's it was coach k No, It's
way more perfect for this Doc Rivers, Larry Brown, Larry Brown,
Larry Brown and Alan Iverson together did not gold medal.
Speaker 3 (01:13:20):
Oh my goodness, that's pretty bad. That is a very good.
Say what it was again? This is still just get
the anthem ready, come on. Everything that we've said.
Speaker 2 (01:13:28):
It's the least inspiring Olympic non dream team I've ever
seen in my life.
Speaker 3 (01:13:33):
It just I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
I don't even know that they could put a team
together that would be better than this. But I digress.
We'll wrap up the four o'clock hour next here on
the A.
Speaker 1 (01:13:42):
Team Azy Cranked Cold Beverage and the Cup Holder and
Clampton slamming the baseball teams from the other coasts.

be a little dark, but if you were paying attention
and you were listening, you'll know the answer to this.
Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
We mentioned.
Speaker 2 (01:15:01):
That a former Houston, Texan, Jacoby Jones, had passed away.
The coroner gave the cause of death in New Orleans.
Earlier today, we discussed that, especially in light of how
young he was age forty, when Jacoby Jones passed away,
what was the cause of death that we talked about
a couple segments ago here on the eight Team seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
(01:15:23):
three two one two five seven ninety That news coming
down today, uh, and again really sad when you consider
that not only was he an electric talent for both
of these clubs, by the way, but a really nice
guy to be around in the locker room. It was
interesting covering those teams because the cast of characters and
then how they would evolve later, especially in the case
(01:15:45):
of like say, jj Watt.
Speaker 3 (01:15:47):
Jj Watt his rookie.
Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
Year once came over to the House of Blues and
did a radio show with me because his teammate Antonio
Smith just texted him and said, hey, come over.
Speaker 3 (01:15:59):
That was the first and last time that was going
to be able to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:16:02):
It was early on in his rookie year, and after that,
shortly thereafter he became a rock star. And then once
he had to pick six against Cincinnati in the playoff game,
the first ever Texans playoff game.
Speaker 3 (01:16:14):
I might add that was a wrap for anything like
that ever happening. Again.
Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
Dude is a bona fide rock star and would have
gotten mobbed if we were like, hey, JJ Watts over here,
y'all just want to hang out. I mean, there was
a few people that came over and took pictures with
him and said hi. But it's just funny thinking back
on that, and that was all during that Jacobe Jones
days and just so many different characters on those teams,
(01:16:40):
Gary Kubiak being the head coach. I don't know, those
were the really good times that I remember of the franchise.
I don't really look back fondly on the Bill O'Brien
years that way, even though there were some moments.
Speaker 4 (01:16:52):
But right now, honestly, I think maybe the big difference
is it was because of the just the coaches. Like
the success was basically the same. I mean, you manage
the playoffs a couple times, you wont a couple if
you beat the big first round games, then you didn't
win again.
Speaker 3 (01:17:07):
Yeah, and you had a team that you thought could.
Speaker 4 (01:17:09):
Clearly, the Shaun Watson teams were talented enough to do more,
and so were the Andre Johnson, Shaw Watt et Cetera's.
Speaker 3 (01:17:16):
He definitely talented enough.
Speaker 4 (01:17:18):
But the difference between the two head coaches one of
them was a Hustonian and aus shucks a let's.
Speaker 3 (01:17:26):
Go have a beer, and there was nothing said about
the Patriots way.
Speaker 4 (01:17:29):
The funny thing is having a beer with Bill O'Brien
would have been a very good time, and I know
people who have done that. And when he is not
in his coach mode, which he was almost twenty four
to seven here in Houston, he is a little bit different.
So much, that's the vibe, but I think some of that,
the way that Bill was, I think kind of cost
(01:17:51):
him some games. And I think Gary to me, I
don't want to want to make it sound like I
don't think he was a good head coach, but I
do think he was one of the elite offensive game
plan coordinator, play callers that was not as good of
a head coach, not as good of a He was
a really good leader, but I think managing the game
(01:18:13):
wasn't great for him. He was really good on offense,
He was really good with his play calling. They had
a very good scheme, They ran creative, winning plays. They
made the most out of what they had. He took
Matt Schaub for a reason, and it wasn't because he
was the most talented. Wasn't because he was the best,
most athletic wasn't because he was the best with his feet.
He thought he could do things with him in the
(01:18:35):
framework of his offense that would make him very, very good.
Speaker 3 (01:18:37):
And he was right.
Speaker 4 (01:18:38):
And I don't categorize Matt Shab as some elite caliber quarterback,
but during those best years, he was playing well enough
to be considered in that very next tier, and the
top tier is pretty elite, and he was never going
to be that, but he was really good at doing
all those things in his zone scheme, and I just
think he's he's and I don't know who some of
those guys will be moving forward, because you know, Shane
(01:18:59):
Styke really good offensive coach with Philadelphia, and I think
he's showing signs of being a really sharp head coach
with the Colts, even just one season in some of
the things they were doing both sides of the ball
last year, in the way that he was putting that
team together. It always feels different though, when we talk
about defensive guys, like what's the difference? Tomiko runs the
exact same thing, except he's on the defensive side. And
(01:19:22):
yet I think he's an in and incredible head coach.
I think he's doing a great job of letting the
other coaches do their jobs. And I don't just mean
on offense, where he's clearly letting Slowick and Laser and
Gerrod Johnson they're doing their thing. I mean on defense too,
to a certain extent.
Speaker 3 (01:19:42):
Team right. I'm not saying because he's a defensive guy.
Speaker 2 (01:19:47):
Even when I say this, I'm talking about the type
of leadership that he brings to the table as a
head coach. It's very and it's ironic because they're gonna
play them this week. It's very Mike Tomlin. Maybe it's
because I have such a man crush on Mike Tomlin,
but Mike Tomlin's not You can't put him in a corner.
You can't pigeonhole him into a role. You can't say
he's this type of coach or this side of the
(01:20:07):
ball is his emphasis? How do you think he'll coach
up Brandon Ayuk?
Speaker 3 (01:20:13):
Is that done? It's not done. There's two trade scenarios
agreed to.
Speaker 4 (01:20:18):
There's three trade teams that they think are out there,
and I can't believe all the reporting looks like it's
gonna be dead solid perfect. They basically put the story
out there. It sounds like the Patriots and the Browns
have deals in place with the Niners. From a team standpoint,
we're going to give you this and you give us
that trade has worked out. If the player can come
(01:20:41):
to terms on a new deal with your team, then
this is the deal we'll have in place, and I mean,
I'll be done. But they put that out there because
they really want the Steelers to be the team he wants.
So they're kind of putting the Steelers like, look, this
is out what you need. Going to miss out on
him if you don't up your offer, which apparently over
the course of the day is reportedly exactly what's happening.
Speaker 2 (01:21:03):
And by the way, a nobody wants to go play.
Nobody wants to go play in New England right now,
do they do? They?
Speaker 3 (01:21:09):
Really?
Speaker 4 (01:21:09):
If you're a wide receiver, you're going there strictly for
the huge, fat guaranteed contract that a little bit maybe
like DeVante Adams and with the Raiders, even though he
claims he still wants to be there, And you're down
or wrung because instead of working with Carr, you're working
with or not Carr. Instead of working with the O'Connell
Minshew duo, you're working with a I hope it's not
(01:21:29):
a duo, but you're working with Drake May. Eventually we
all think, well, what is Adam's gonna want out with
all of his money, So Ayuk, even though he's just
going to get there, eventually, he will also.
Speaker 2 (01:21:40):
Want Now, you don't want to go to Cleveland because
even though it would kill me, because nobody wants less
than me to see Deshaun Watson get a weapon, but
Cleveland always screws things up.
Speaker 6 (01:21:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:21:54):
I didn't actually end up putting it all together as
very wordy, but you're gonna tell me the Browns had
Joe Flacco lead them to the postseason last year, and
you're going to add back Nick Chubb, You're going to
trade for Jerry Judy, and you're going to trade for
Brandon Ayuk for a healthy Deshaun Watson and you're still
(01:22:17):
gonna find a way for it not to work.
Speaker 3 (01:22:19):
Is what are you getting up though? Just draft picks?
Who knows? I mean Amari Cooper's name was mentioned, which
is baffling. That would be that'd be lateral at best.
I know Brandon Ayuk's great, but you would have Ayuk
for longer than you have Cooper four, and he's younger.
Speaker 2 (01:22:35):
You know, we might talk about this again because it's football,
and football at five is straight ahead.
Speaker 1 (01:22:39):
Here on the A Team, two lifelong Houston sports guys
named Adam Talking your Teams, Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler
are the A Team A Team.
Speaker 3 (01:23:07):
I feel like I'm hosting football at five here on
the A Team. I don't know, that's what that music
kind of said to me.
Speaker 2 (01:23:13):
Wex over there, ac right here, third hour of a
Tuesday edition of The A Team here on Sports Talk
seven ninety Football at five is we get you ready for?
Speaker 3 (01:23:23):
You know, I heard Ross say this or I guess
it might have been Matt earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:23:27):
This week because of the extra preseason game, it kind
of feels like week zero in a high school schedule,
it's not really week one, and especially when you consider
that the starters, whoever they whomever they may be, are
going to get time this week.
Speaker 4 (01:23:43):
Yeah again, I think that's it's overblown. Well, no, I
think it's still a little clouding on exactly that what
that will mean, especially offensively, and with so many guys
appearing to miss enough time at practice either right before
their last game or now during this week in Ohio
that you know they're just not even available. I think
it's kind of just interesting or weird how the schedule
(01:24:05):
actually sets up. The Texans obviously played the opening game
of the preseason schedule. There are a bunch of games
on Saturday this weekend, most teams' first games, and there's
a couple of games Thursday and Friday. The Texans play Friday,
so they will have played two preseason games before more
than half the league has even played one preseason game.
(01:24:26):
But it does definitely have that feel to it, and
I think that's kind of the way they've gone through
their training camp this year. They do have those additional days.
I think they've tried to be as comfortable with the
players' bodies as possible so as not to put too
many reps on them, put too many hits on them,
even preseason or training camp hits. Definitely think that's why
(01:24:47):
they only have one joint practice. I remember this summer
I thought they might have none because they just simply
had so many plays and practices to get through that
that might be something they were concerned with. But I
do think that a fo them to do what the
Cardinals are going to do. Apparently according to their head coach,
Bird Gang Guy says, Kyler Murray is not going to
play this preseason. They've got a joint practice set up
(01:25:09):
later this preseason. He will take care of whatever he
needs to take of there, and they'll be ready for
their opener. He missed a little under half the season,
a little over I should say half the season a
year ago, playing in eight of their seventeen games. We
were discussing CJ. Stroud's redibility for the season. Doesn't matter
how many preseason plays he snaps he has. He will
(01:25:29):
be ready to go healthy if he's healthy for the opener.
I'm not concerned about timing anything else. Cadence working with
the old line, working with a key new player on offense,
both next to him and Stefan Diggs and behind him
with Joe Mixon, especially since where we stand now in preseason,
wouldn't be surprising at all for Joe Mixon to not
(01:25:51):
play any of it as he continues to recover from
a quad injury, though I'm completely unworried about him playing
in the regular season. In the regular season starts two
weeks and a day after their preseason finale. Their finale's
on the twenty fourth, they don't play until the eighth.
While he might not be physically able or even wanting
(01:26:11):
to play, I think he'll be fine, and I do
think it makes a lot of sense tonight have CJ.
Stroud out there the offensive line. You know, maybe there's
a couple of notes on the injury front, with Titus
Howard leaving practice today and Laramie Tunseell not practicing yet
through their first twelve practices of the preseason, another great
day according to reports. Obviously, I was not in Ohio
(01:26:33):
earlier today and now sitting here in Houston right now,
but Derek Stingley Junior has just been incredible. I saw
ten of the twelve practices they had here in Houston,
and I'm sure that has just continued there. He was
not among the top ten cornerbacks on the most recent
list that had Sauce Gardner number one, but I think
(01:26:53):
he's certainly gonna play like that this year. He had
another pick six today, again pick six in training camp.
Speaker 3 (01:26:59):
Take it for what it's.
Speaker 4 (01:26:59):
Worth, but this is a huge, huge, ask, I think
for this Texans defense, and I still think the issues
they might have are coming from leaving these guys all
alone they have question marks at every other spot. If
you ask me, I hope that Kamari Lasterer can hold
down that other spot. He's also now missed the last
couple of practices and did not, like most of the others,
(01:27:22):
play in the preseason opener. I'm curious how far up
the depth chart Kaylen Bullock can work, because right now
you have Jimmy Ward, who I think you're comfortable with,
but he's also older and has been prone to injury
both here and prior to coming here. Jalen Peetrie has
been used in the slot so much during camp I
wonder if that's almost a permanent spot for him, and
(01:27:42):
that means Eric Murray's on the field a lot at
the other safety and that's kind of where Kaylen Bullock works.
In Christian Harris twelve practice is in he has not
practiced at all. They don't seem and from what I understand,
shouldn't be concerned about him being physically ready for the opener,
but he's seriously or will.
Speaker 3 (01:27:58):
Have very little camp time.
Speaker 4 (01:28:00):
And then you have the ongoing question marks up front,
and they're never going away until they prove otherwise. The
guys on the end are going to be awesome. Not
sure why Will Anderson Juniors missed three of the last
four practices, but he has, including today. Daniel Hunter was
back on the field today. Those two are going to
be great. Real chance that they are considered the most destructive,
disruptive edge duo in the NFL this year. But teams
(01:28:23):
might just hand the ball off and run through the
middle of this Texans defense unless al Shaher and Christian
Harris are awesome or their host of unsung no name,
no offense interior alignment, they have nothing but them on
their roster.
Speaker 3 (01:28:40):
Did you see the rumors? And I think at this
point that's just what they are.
Speaker 2 (01:28:45):
And if anything, it's cooled off significantly in the last
twenty four hours about Justin Simmons and the Texans, Well, I.
Speaker 4 (01:28:52):
Thought that was such a I don't know if it
was the Albright report that sent it into motion, but
he had mentioned and he works in Denver and has
for a while and usually that as a pretty good
handle on what their players or former players are in
the midst of and he had a report they said
multiple teams have made him offers and it's set in
motion of bunch of reporting here in Houston. John Alexander
(01:29:14):
among them, saying there has been no offer according to sources,
between the Texans and Simmons. And obviously you're gonna get
questions today on a day where the d C meets
with the media and about how happy they are with
their group, And I can't imagine they would say otherwise.
With no injuries, there's no real reason to pick apart
your roster right there in front of the cameras if
you don't have to if you had an injury and said,
(01:29:35):
maybe we could get some help here. Our depths being tested,
but there aren't really any concerns from a health standpoint.
So I would assume you would want your DC to say, yes,
the guy our general manager sent us to camp with
whom are all healthy we can win with, which is
essentially the path he too.
Speaker 2 (01:29:50):
But my question is regardless of where he ends up going,
and Houston would definitely fit because he wants to be
on a contending team, which doesn't everybody.
Speaker 3 (01:30:00):
But he's not getting paid in the NFL. Yeah, yeah,
but he's only thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:30:05):
Why is he even available, Well, it's it improves your
chances of winning if he's on your team. No, I'm
asking Denver doesn't have any use for him. Okay, like
hy has nobody else yet. Yeah, it's I would assume
it is purely asked. He must be asking for something
(01:30:25):
that teams aren't willing to meet because he's still playing
way too high a level for him not to be
in the NFL for Game one, not alone at some
point this year.
Speaker 3 (01:30:34):
I mean, he's one of the best. I think he's
at least one.
Speaker 2 (01:30:36):
Of the best eight safeties since entering the league, and
that's the best since twenty sixteen during that span.
Speaker 4 (01:30:43):
The great locker room guy, big leader. She's just really
good player. You're rights do that. They've got the money
and it makes it they can find money if they
need it.
Speaker 8 (01:30:56):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:30:56):
Yeah, but that I mean, I know they're is not
it's not a lock that their offense is just gonna
be electric, but it sure looks good on paper. Take
what they because you know more, in my opinion, you
know more about what your offense is going to be
this year, even with the additionist to Fon Diggs, because
you've you've interchanged far more parts on the defensive side
(01:31:17):
of things. And while this would be another such you know,
interchangeable part, it can only help everything else you've done.
Speaker 4 (01:31:25):
I mean I just mentioned four safeties for the Texans,
three of them essentially will be starting that Justin Simmons
is light years better than any of them, right.
Speaker 2 (01:31:35):
So plug him in, have the especially when you consider,
you know, Deniko Autry's got the suspension, anything that helps
your defense going into week one when you're playing that quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:31:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:31:48):
I just it kind of surprises me that what And again,
they could be talking about a contract right now.
Speaker 3 (01:31:54):
You don't even know about it.
Speaker 4 (01:31:54):
He's thirty years old. He's obviously looking for big money.
He's made good money. Is what's what's the limit? You know?
Speaker 3 (01:32:02):
What is Nick thinking?
Speaker 4 (01:32:03):
You know? Can I give him three years? Can I
give him four? Where the bulk of the first two,
the first three is guaranteed. How comfortable or Debiko and
myself and Callum Hannah about this player at an all
pro level at age thirty one, thirty two and thirty three.
He's played on an all pro level for the last
basically five years.
Speaker 2 (01:32:23):
It's not like you're bringing Ed Reed in here, No
you're not. He was fifty by the time he got
down what man.
Speaker 4 (01:32:29):
I think some of that was because he was bearded
up like if he did, he bearded up right, so
he looked way older. So then when you saw him playing,
you're like, yeah, he looks like a fifty year old.
I don't think we would have thought that if he
if he didn't go beard it up here and used.
Speaker 2 (01:32:43):
As someone that will never and I mean ever, put
anything in his beard. Do you think my beard with
a much more salt in it than even five years
ago makes me look significantly older?
Speaker 3 (01:32:55):
It does?
Speaker 4 (01:32:56):
It was, And I don't know how much you got
into it. Yesterday your first show of the post Hall
of Fame Induction weekend. You know Ed Reid was there,
Tons of Miami sons of hurricanes there.
Speaker 2 (01:33:06):
Peppers look old, of me, Andre Johnson looked like he
could suit up on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (01:33:10):
I didn't think Julius looked old. I did enjoy that.
Speaker 4 (01:33:13):
At least someone said we can put the Lebron v.
Jordan debate to rest because Hall of Fame weekend and
not one person mentioned Lebron James. But Michael Jordan was
mentioned because he was there exactly at a point. Guest
of Dwight Freeny, Yeah, a guest of Dwight Freeny as
(01:33:34):
mac Brown was able to celebrate Carolina Goats, Peppers and
Jordan he tweeted that out this weekend put him in speech.
Speaker 3 (01:33:41):
Obviously he did, and he deservedly so. But yeah, there
are so many things.
Speaker 4 (01:33:43):
Like I said, I'm not sure how much you got
into yesterday, but a lot of the former teammates here
that made it up there that were at the ceremony
that we're seeing in a lot of the photos. I
noticed it, and I'm sure many others did. One of
the picks of all the players at the post party,
you had two guys down in the very front, Rick
Smith and Gary Kubiak, and a bunch of the players
(01:34:04):
around him. The player immediately next to Rick Smith down
there on the left side of the photo hot tip
Nick Squarefield, was Dante Robinson.
Speaker 3 (01:34:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:34:13):
No, I immediately recognized him and he has aged the
least out of all those guys, I would say from Salon,
there's a lot of old names out.
Speaker 3 (01:34:21):
There.
Speaker 2 (01:34:21):
Was a great, great day the A team, and you
know what, it's always great day at Berkeley I Center,
particularly right now if you are either a teacher getting
ready for that school year or a first responder. They
always honor the heroes of our community over at Berkeley
I Center with special Lasik savings, and they are honoring
all the linemen.
Speaker 3 (01:34:43):
Who helped restore power to our great city right now.
Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
That's what they're doing with all heroes receiving over two
thousand dollars in Lasik savings. Anyone who doesn't want to
fumble around for glasses in the dark should absolutely give
them a call today to receive those Lasik savings. The linemen, well,
they want to thank you for the light and they
want to provide you with the focus by calling seven

Speaker 3 (01:35:24):
The A team continues one Sports Talk seven nineties. You
know who we have not heard from all day long?
Speaker 2 (01:35:44):
Today wex the offensive coordinator and sooner to be a
head coach of another team, Bobby Slowich of your Houston Texans.
Speaker 4 (01:35:51):
Odds are reasonably good interviews well, and he's the preferred
choice over lionzoc Ben Johnson. He'll probably be first second
in line, and we are all for it because it
probably means the Texans killed it again this season to
maybe they won the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (01:36:09):
That'd be pretty awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:36:11):
Just bump up Gerrod, keep the rest of the crew
in places that what you would do, I'd probably be
something i'd strongly consider. I mean, I'm biased has an
even better opportunity. I can't imagine a better one than that. Well,
here's what he was getting a head coaching opportunity.
Speaker 2 (01:36:25):
Like if the Texans won the Super Bowl and it
was I'm not gonna say it was solely based on
their offense, because I think their defense is just we
just got done talking about some of the moves they
made to make that that side of the football really
good this year. But if it's an offensive fueled Super
Bowl run, which let's face it, most of them are
this this at this point in NFL history. You have
(01:36:47):
defenses out there, for sure, but it's a pass happy
league that's only getting more that way. I feel like
you would not just have Bobby Slowig departing your offensive staff. Well,
he's gonna do what Debiko did. He took people with him.
He's going to do what most coaches do, try to
take people with them. Now, Girod hasn't called plays before,
it's not his offense. He also didn't work in this
(01:37:08):
offense extensively to where you'd be able to continue it
quite as seamlessly, I wouldn't think.
Speaker 6 (01:37:13):
So.
Speaker 4 (01:37:14):
You might still have an eye on somebody that might
be off that same tree. Who knows, maybe even a
Kubiak would be available that you'd consider.
Speaker 3 (01:37:22):
But that's well. This year play out.
Speaker 4 (01:37:24):
They still got three more preseason games and seventeen regular
season games and the likely four postseason games unless you
think they're finishing first in the AFC and only need
three to win the Super Bowl. Most coordinators talk to
the media today in Ohio following practice. Bobby Slowock, coach
Burke on the defense, and special teams coordinator Frank.
Speaker 3 (01:37:43):
Ross meeting with the media.
Speaker 4 (01:37:45):
We'll start with Slowock and initially get his thoughts on
what we've talked about already today, the possibility of changes
through the preseason on their offensive line on the edges
because of the injury situations to both Titus Howard and
Jeremy Tunsel. Blake Fisher continues to get a lot of work,
most of it's been as their pseudo starting left tackle.
Speaker 9 (01:38:06):
What are his thoughts on the young rookie pass pro
He particularly has made some technique adjustments that have helped him.
Speaker 8 (01:38:13):
For sure.
Speaker 9 (01:38:14):
The rushers he's going against have helped him. I know
he's had a lot of conversations with them on what
they're thinking, what they're doing, and you know, talking to
other old linemen as obviously helped him. And then the
run game for us is just very different than where
he came from from college. But he's been doing a
good jobs, been he's bought in and really right now,
I'd say he's probably a little further ahead in the
run game than the pass game, and he's just got
(01:38:35):
to put his head down and keep growing.
Speaker 4 (01:38:37):
He would have been the starting left tackle at Notre
Dame this year most likely had he returned to school.
Joe Alt obviously going to the NFL for the extremely
honest head coach the coaches of the Chargers now, and
he chose to come to the NFL Now, I think
there's some people that view the Texans as maybe that
was a little early to take the player they see
(01:38:59):
versus other p including the Texans, clearly thinking well, they
took a player that you know, fifteen or fourteen college
games from now in the twenty twenty five draft, people
might have a very different idea of Fisher. And again,
from what I've seen, I think he's selled his own.
I think he's done a pretty good job. I think
there's clear signs that there's a there's probably a pretty
good player there and he might be seeing a lot
(01:39:20):
more of this preseason time. And I think we saw
a lot to like from Kenyan Green. I think we
saw a lot to like from Juwe Scruggs. And they're
twenty five snaps respectively in the open and should be
more on the way. We mentioned that Derek Stingley Junior
has been awesome. That most likely means he's been picking
off c. J. Stroud during practice. That means he's been
matching up in a lot of one on one drills
(01:39:42):
with Stefan Diggs and Ico Collins. It means both sides
are having some success against each other. Bobby Slowick recognizing.
Speaker 9 (01:39:50):
That there's days it gets frustrating for all of us,
and there's days where you know we really are on
our game and we go out and we perform like
we believe we should good and we got to keep
those just we got to get more consistent right now.
That's what this is about. That's what the scheme wise
that usually takes off evolves as we go through the season.
As coaches, you're always talking about ideas. You know, you
(01:40:11):
kind of have a library as you go through the offseason. Oh,
this is a good way to do this. This is
a nice new little wrinkle. But training camp, you're you're
focused in on this is what we need to do
every week, no matter what we're doing schematically, to go
win a game.
Speaker 4 (01:40:27):
Every week, no matter if it's the Colts or the Patriots,
the Ravens, or the Chiefs, or even Mike McCarthy's Cowboys
every week.
Speaker 3 (01:40:36):
Mike McCarthy's Cowboys do not belong in that conversation. Oh,
I think most twelve win teams belong in that conversation. Yeah,
that was last year.
Speaker 2 (01:40:46):
It is shocking to me how as time goes on,
I get where the fans are at there, how little
that team did for a team that really is on
the hot seat. The whole team's on the hot seat.
It's not just Mike McCarthy. It's not just Dak Prescott,
it's not just Jerry Jones. Even though he's the owner,
(01:41:06):
so we can't technically be on the hot.
Speaker 4 (01:41:07):
It's still you have to recognize what you're saying at
the end of the postseason and saying that was that
was genius. Jerry and Stephen Jones put everybody at the
highest most volatile pressure situation we've seen in a long time,
and it worked. They got the best out of Dak,
they got the best out of CD, they got the
(01:41:27):
best out of the return of Zeke, the best out
of Mike McCarthy, and he finally got back to the
top and he's hoisting the trophy.
Speaker 3 (01:41:35):
Jerry Jones did it right. You want to make the
bet now. I don't want to be on the other
side of that nonsense. I just spewed.
Speaker 2 (01:41:43):
It's funny because we talked NonStop about how packed, how
loaded the AFC is, and how wide open it feels
like the NFC is every year. Unless you know, if
the forty nine ers didn't exist.
Speaker 3 (01:41:56):
I think the Niners are a step ahead.
Speaker 7 (01:41:59):
I do.
Speaker 4 (01:41:59):
I think the there's probably not enough respect for the
rest of the teams because Dallas keeps being that team
with the next most wins. We know how unsatisfying their
postseasons are. Dismissing Detroit seems really foolish. Philadelphia in the division, Well,
they didn't win the division last year and they could
be in a position to be better this year if
everything works out.
Speaker 3 (01:42:19):
It is not hurt and they have Saquon Yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (01:42:22):
Mean they got a hole in the middle of their
offensive line. Take the best players at the center in
history just retired. Yeah, so hang out with his brother.
Speaker 3 (01:42:29):
Take the best player that's not.
Speaker 2 (01:42:31):
On either of those two prohibitive favorites for the division
championship and put him on one of those two teams
that should automatically make that Like is Dallas even the
favorite to win the division?
Speaker 3 (01:42:43):
They shouldn't be.
Speaker 4 (01:42:44):
Will make our predictions, and I think they'll match most
people predicting Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (01:42:48):
To win the division.
Speaker 4 (01:42:49):
I mean I just not buy a lot. I mean
the Cowboys. I would assume people think double figure wins
are what their prediction will be. Now it's a matter
do they think they can get to eleven? Do they
think they can challenge for that division? How bad do
they think the Giants who can't stop fighting the Lions
and their joint practices this week. By the way, guys,
I know one of you is a rookie Malik Neighbors,
(01:43:09):
the other ones a veteran Kirby Joseph. Punching helmets is dumb.
Getting in a fight at a joint practice not the
dumbest thing it happens. And but punching the other guys
in the helmet with closed, hard, real punching fists is dumb.
Speaker 2 (01:43:26):
Because it doesn't hurt them, and it does hurt you.
And the only thing dumber is your quarterback running towards
the freakas even if your quarterback is Daniel Jones.
Speaker 3 (01:43:34):
He was just trying.
Speaker 4 (01:43:35):
One of his linemen got blocked over and the guy
was just you know, pushing down on him. He couldn't
get up, and he went in there and he shoved
a guy. The neighbors fight started after a reception, a
touchdown reception. He kind of did what we frown on
and sports. You know Rodman would do it, other guys
would do it.
Speaker 3 (01:43:54):
He kicked him in the crotch.
Speaker 2 (01:43:55):
No, he kind of started it and acted like he didn't. Yeah,
but with Roby doing that to Karl Malone and everybody
hates Karl alone.
Speaker 4 (01:44:02):
Well, he walked by the defensive back, the safety who
wasn't technically involved on the play, and he shoved him
right in the helmet, you know, pushed him up in
his chest and his helmet, but kept on walking like
the guy wasn't gonna care that he did that. And
then here he played the backup game. And then they
started throwing punches at each other, and then everybody got
in there and it was all that stuff. What I
(01:44:23):
was saying, how good do we think the Jaden Daniels
led Commanders can be in year one with all the
changes they've made, And similarly with the Giants, with how
poor we think they are from a talent standpoint, that
goes into it a long way. But I still think
the Niners are our strong favorites. I do think the
Lions and Eagles can be very good, but it is
different than the AFC. While the Chiefs are at least
(01:44:45):
as strong as a favorite. I think the number of
teams that can challenge and I do still include Buffalo.
I continue to think a healthy Joe Burrows Bengals will
be there, clearly, the Texans and Ravens. That's four at
least that many teams I think have a real shot
to lose to the Chiefs in the conference title game.
Speaker 2 (01:45:05):
Pat Mahomes is off the table. Who are you taking
if you're drafting your fantasy quarterback after that?
Speaker 4 (01:45:13):
You think he's gonna be the top pick after the
year he had last year of quarterbacks, probably as much
as people are afraid of Tua. It was a pretty
explosive year and could be. Again, you do have to
I wouldn't. I'm not saying he's the top guy. By
no means am I saying that. But there are some
(01:45:33):
weeks their offense, especially if you double up, you basically
win the weeks they score four touchdowns, you have a lot,
you have a Chane Intua, you gotta you're all set.
Speaker 3 (01:45:46):
And this is strictly from a fantasy that's why. Yeah, No,
very clear.
Speaker 4 (01:45:50):
I think fantasy only, I would still probably take Josh
Allen first. Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:45:56):
Okay, and Lamar Jackson would not be far bah.
Speaker 2 (01:46:01):
Yeah, but he's more of a like a dual threat
fantasy football man threat, whatever it takes.
Speaker 4 (01:46:07):
You don't think Josh Allen's a dual threat double figure
touchdowns on the ground. Josh Allen twenty twenty four comes.
Speaker 2 (01:46:14):
I had him back to back season's got a championship
one of those and not so much last year.
Speaker 3 (01:46:19):
We will continue next here on the A Team, The
A Team. Not before I tell you.
Speaker 2 (01:46:25):

Speaker 1 (01:47:21):
Cannonball weekends are better all the way with all Just
tell your smart device Alex up play sports Stock seven
ninety on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 4 (01:47:34):
Time to get into a handful of items here on
the eight teams, some things we either have not gotten
into at all or need to revisit a little bit.
Among those things, Your Houston Astros, as they get into
game two of their nine game road trip, game two
of their three games, stop in Arlington to take on
the Rangers, try to recover from last night's rather disappointing
(01:47:55):
efforts in that they took the lead in the eighth
and the tenth and came out the short end of
it via the walkoff homer from Josh Smith. Dro Spot
is saying earlier today, Luis Garcia is still not throwing.
He had reported a sore elbow after recently throwing, and
now looks very likely to not be able to contribute
to the Astros for quite some time, maybe not until
(01:48:16):
twenty twenty five. Justin Verlander, though, who had his live
BP over the weekend right there at minute, made Park.
Everything went well that day, he said, hopefully would wake
up Monday and feel well, which he has. He'll take
his normal bullpen which he's been doing preceding each of
those live BPS, which is kind of his normal routine,
which means he's throwing a lot and putting a lot
(01:48:38):
into the shoulder, the neck, everything that had kept him
from starting. And if it goes well tomorrow, then this
weekend the Space Cowboys, who are continuing their season their
quest to be one of the best in Minor League baseball.
He'll be pitching for them and what could be a
two rehab stint appearance before returning to the Astros. Astros
also made a roster move today, taking Dell and calling
(01:49:00):
off the forty man via the DFA, sending Trey Cabbage
down to sugar Land, and bringing up Zach Decenzo. Among
the top five players on the Astros prospect list and
played a whole lot of baseball so far this season
due to injury, but a rapid riser this year, a
little double A, a little bit less triple A. And
now he's in the lineup tonight and is the DH
(01:49:21):
dan I know. He spoke to the media before today's game.
Speaker 3 (01:49:24):
Yes he did.
Speaker 8 (01:49:25):
And of course, whenever somebody gets the call up for
the first time to make their major league debut, what's
it like to get the call?
Speaker 10 (01:49:30):
Got a call from my manager Mickey's story. We had
the offa yesterday, so pretty hill. And then I got
a call from Mickey at twelve thirty am around there,
picked up the phone. He asked me, how is your
off the going. I said it was good, man. He said,
it's about to get better. You're going to the big league.
So that was how I kind of found out.
Speaker 2 (01:49:47):
It's pretty cool.
Speaker 8 (01:49:48):
And also do Zenzo had been playing, including hitting really
well at the Triple A level in the eleven games
that he had been with the Triple A Sugarland Space Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (01:49:57):
What made him successful.
Speaker 10 (01:49:58):
Really just taken my approach, ticking to my plan at
the play and playing good defense, just being consistent and
playing good baseball. Nothing really changed from my move to
Double A to Triple A. Just new environment. You know,
things gets gets shaken up a little bit for you,
and I kind of took the opportunity, took the good
ball that I was playing.
Speaker 9 (01:50:19):
Just rolling with it.
Speaker 4 (01:50:21):
I mean, the results changed. It's good to see that
none of the process changed. Had had injuries, like I mentioned,
spent a little bit of time in the FCL to
prep for his return from injury. Twenty two games with
corpus I rolled out a two twenty two batting average
at six seventy eight ops. But they knew he should
be in Triple A once he was ready, and they
(01:50:42):
felt like he was, and they were right at least
for eleven games eleven games with the Space Cowboys, eight
extravates hits, half of those were homers thirteen RVI and
those eleven games and an OPS of twelve eleven while
he hit three ninety one. He brings that back hopefully
to tonight's game, where, like I said, he's batting seventh
(01:51:02):
in the Astros order the DH tonight. Most of his
minor league baseball has been played at third base, played
a little bit of first base, a little bit of
second base. Not regarded as an elite fielder at any
of those spots.
Speaker 2 (01:51:16):
I just want them to get runs across the play too.
I don't care who does it. I'm fine with the
kid making his debut and all that kind of stuff.
It's just bigger fish to fry.
Speaker 6 (01:51:26):
And I get it.
Speaker 3 (01:51:28):
He's not here because man, this guy's been great. It's
his time.
Speaker 4 (01:51:31):
Let's focus on another great new He's here because the
Astros don't have any offense.
Speaker 3 (01:51:36):
That's the honest truth.
Speaker 4 (01:51:38):
The honest truth is a guy who's played eleven games
in Triple A is here because they don't have anybody
else to turn to and they need somebody else to
provide a spark.
Speaker 3 (01:51:49):
Didn't. That wasn't exactly the scenario where Joey Lo Brafito
was brought up. He would not.
Speaker 4 (01:51:55):
I mean, most of the guys that have made their
debuts this year for the Astros. I guess maybe I'm
just thinking of Joey and Spencer. They would not have
been here if not for either problems or injuries. Injuries
in the case of Spencer and lack of There's no
he was doing so well. And I know I just
rattled off these numbers for Descenzo that sound awesome, but
(01:52:16):
over a very short time period. I mean, Joey low
Perfedo was the best minor league hitter period. For the
first five or six weeks of the season. There was
almost no way a team like this who had gotten
off to the start that they had could afford not
to bring him up, and then they didn't really give
him an every day opportunity until later in the year,
which he unfortunately did not take advantage of. Hesse He
(01:52:39):
actually played first base for the Blue Jays for one
hitter at the end of one of their recent games
when they had to make a defensive switch.
Speaker 3 (01:52:49):
But I don't think he's regularly going to play there.
Speaker 4 (01:52:50):
By the way, Will Wagner had seven hits in his
first eleven at bats for their triple A outfit.
Speaker 3 (01:52:55):
Yeah, he sucks, is good from we're going to show
up to night, By the way, I just had to
ask you that.
Speaker 4 (01:53:00):
I mean, I've seen his the back of his baseball
card and the why Jeff, why his first name is
fromber not good?
Speaker 3 (01:53:09):
There's no good on his baseball card anywhere.
Speaker 2 (01:53:11):
It's not his Baseball reference base Well, I'd tell you
this when he, you know, bleeps the bed, it definitely
says bad.
Speaker 3 (01:53:18):
If you must.
Speaker 4 (01:53:21):
I think fromber Valdez, who's one of the better pitchers
in the American League, will be just fine time. Okay,
probably not. He might not even pitch as well as
the last two guys, but maybe the offense will score.
Speaker 8 (01:53:33):
What else do we have all right, So Charles Barkley,
it's been thought that once the NBA on TNT goes
away that he would too.
Speaker 6 (01:53:40):
Well.
Speaker 8 (01:53:41):
Today he said he's not going to retire, in fact,
gonna stay with TNT. In a statement, he said he
loves his TNT sports family there are his number one priority,
and that he looks forward to continuing his work with them,
both on shows currently and new ones to develop in
the future.
Speaker 3 (01:53:58):
Did you read the rest of the statement.
Speaker 6 (01:54:00):
I did not.
Speaker 4 (01:54:01):
It says I look forward to continuing and having a
great final season with TNT, and hopefully everybody understands this
negotiating tactic that I'm putting into this statement when I
get hired for an insane amount of money to work
with one of the networks.
Speaker 3 (01:54:15):
Moving forward, right.
Speaker 4 (01:54:18):
And again, Charles Barkley is going to do one more
season of analysis and just continue getting his money for
TNT so he can work college basketball games in the tournament,
cover the Rory McElroy, Phil Mickelson, Tennis Curry events on
the golf course.
Speaker 3 (01:54:39):
He's going to keep doing.
Speaker 4 (01:54:40):
In my opinion, he's going to get paid even more
than he's due from TNT by somebody else, and he'll
take it.
Speaker 3 (01:54:47):
Are they going to let him out of his contract TNT?
Speaker 4 (01:54:50):
Yeah, I don't think they have the power to prevent it, honestly,
the way the contract's written, which is how well they
don't have basketball anymore.
Speaker 3 (01:54:58):
So I think that's kind of the cafcat that allows.
Speaker 2 (01:55:01):
Actually I didn't know the specifics about his They're they're
due to pay him regardless.
Speaker 3 (01:55:07):
Correct, that's just insane.
Speaker 2 (01:55:10):
But okay, if they're not, if they're not gonna have basketball,
there's a way for them to wiggle out of that money, right.
Speaker 3 (01:55:17):
I think in my best Mike Fortello, I don't think so.
That is brutal.
Speaker 2 (01:55:23):
How do you lose the NBA T and T unless,
like Charles, you never had a chance. They're suing to
not lose it, So.
Speaker 3 (01:55:29):
They can just turn around and give that money to Charles.
Speaker 2 (01:55:33):
Since they're not going to get any advertisings from from
basketball games.
Speaker 3 (01:55:37):
It's just nobody wants this though. That's the thing. Nobody
wants this scenario.
Speaker 4 (01:55:42):
Except the people that want money, both the players and
the teams and the owner that helped put are the
commissioner that helped put it all together.
Speaker 3 (01:55:51):
Yeah, but who ultimately is paying the bill? You you're
a fan. Me, I'm a fan.
Speaker 2 (01:55:58):
My money doesn't go towards them. We all know that
it's a little bit of a different scenario. I just mean, look,
if you're if you're not at the game, you want
to see those games on TNT with that show, you're
paying customer, You're not getting what you want.
Speaker 3 (01:56:11):
I don't know anybody that's happy about this.
Speaker 2 (01:56:14):

father and their wives love them for it.

Holly cares about his many back to the A team

Speaker 2 (01:57:47):
Final segment of the eighteen Here on Sports Talk seven ninety,
Astros with about as bad of an opening game series
loss to the Rangers as you could have hoped for last.
Speaker 3 (01:57:58):
Night, very stomach punchy. I just it's just it's everything
that's wrong with him right now.
Speaker 2 (01:58:04):
In one game all together, three out of four innings
to end the game, you load the bases and get
practically nothing. And again I felt bad for Caleb Ferguson
because he did get those first two outs, and this
is the this is the life of a reliever.
Speaker 3 (01:58:24):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (01:58:25):
But he was just putting a bad spot like any
pitcher has been lately. You have to be perfect, you
have to.
Speaker 4 (01:58:30):
I don't feel bad for Caleb Ferguson like you do.
I mean, I don't feel for bad for any of
these guys in real life. It get three outs, it's
a terrible place to be because you're in extras and
you didn't do anything wrong and your first pitch is,
oh my god, they got a guy in scoring position already.
I gotta I can't even let him ground out twice
or I'm gonna give up a run. Oh but it's unearned.
(01:58:51):
So who cares? They care about winning and losing two.
I'm not sure if anybody knows is that. But I
don't feel so bad because the the it was no
different than Presley. Like Pressley threw two pitches and you
got two outs, and he threw a lot of good
pitches to a Seeger, but then he threw a terrible one.
It's you do have to execute all of your pitches,
and that's why you're at this level. When you don't execute,
(01:59:13):
guess the other teams hit hit your mistakes. They did
not speak after the game and say I don't know
how he did that.
Speaker 3 (01:59:20):
I really liked that. I executed that pitch very well.
It's just you gotta tip your cap to him. He
threw an out. The Ferguson pitch was awful.
Speaker 4 (01:59:28):
I don't know if we'd categorize Presley's pitch as awful,
but it was a hanging slider. And when he's effective,
everything is at the knees and below and he's getting
guys to swing or ground out. And that's exactly what
he was doing. It's what he was still doing at
the early portion of the Seger at bat and then
Presley left one up. Ferguson was getting swings and misses
(01:59:49):
on his eighty one mile an hour change up on
a slider, and then he threw a ninety four mile
an hour fastball that caught. I mean, it wasn't middle middle,
but it was kind of close to middle middle. They
have three hitters in their lineup, maybe four if you
count Young a little early, and it's the three guys
at the top, Smith, Seger, and now Simeon. As Bruce
Bochi has finally made that flop or flip flop with
(02:00:11):
Simeon no longer batting leadoff, I know Seger was next
up and you were three to one, but catching that
much of the plate just this just a mistake. And
when a pitcher who has had limited success this year,
not here but in New York, Uh, it did seem
like that's the kind of pitcher that he is. Again,
what what did? What did the anti Espada? He doesn't
(02:00:34):
know what he's doing. He's in over his head. Crew
think a second inning for Hater Taylor Scott. Both are
reasonable options. Hater had thrown twenty six pitches in any
number one in striking out the side and walking a
batter and balking him to second. Taylor Scott's probably a
better option.
Speaker 3 (02:00:54):
I would agree with that.
Speaker 4 (02:00:56):
But you can't outfit your team with twenty six place.
You can't outfit your team with these guys in the
bullpen and have your manager or not use them. They're
on the team. He doesn't have a choice. He can
pick a spots as best he can. And I know
we all love this seven eight nine that the Astros have. Well,
they were in the tenth inning the seven eight nines
had been used.
Speaker 2 (02:01:17):
Yeah, I mean this is why this offseason, regardless of
when it starts, what you know, I'm just going to
be very interested to see not only you know what happens,
but but how the plan of attack is. Is this
a situation where, I mean, Bregman's its own thing, but
regardless of whether or not he comes back, how you
(02:01:38):
are addressing the rest of the roster, not just the
two corner two corners spots.
Speaker 4 (02:01:44):
Sounds awful with some of the things you're putting out there.
Al Tuove, this is your twenty twenty five lineup to
kick off the season once again against New York the Mets.
This time, Altuove leads off Alvareitz bat's third, Tucker bats fourth,
mm hmm, Jiner bats fifth.
Speaker 3 (02:02:02):
It's not bad, It's not bad at all. It's a
huge hole at number two though.
Speaker 4 (02:02:06):
That is a question mark today and it might be
a question mark when they get to spring training next year,
even though they'll know most of the roster and the
other part of it is everything else really is a
question mark. I mean, I mean everything. Jeremy Paine, you
will be your shortstop. I don't know where you want
to hit him, and I can't tell you anything about
the rest.
Speaker 3 (02:02:25):
Going in the two hole like he did for twenty
twenty two.
Speaker 4 (02:02:28):
It certainly is an option depending on who you've signed,
if you've signed somebody to play third base, depending on
if you're still pretending that Jake Myers is an everyday
center fielder, if you're still pretending that Chaz McCormick has
snapped out of it. But I say still pretending, I
shouldn't be so cavalier and mean, there's two months of baseball.
If there's fifty games, I don't want to maybe be
fooled by the last fifty when I've seen what I've
(02:02:49):
seen for the first one twelve. But there's enough season left.
Certainly we've seen a much better Chas. I don't know
if people think there has. We've seen a much better
Jake is very very first stint pre shoulder injury, in
the postseason, he was much better than he is now.
This is his first real chance at all in his
whole major league career, really to just go out there
(02:03:10):
and play every day without the concern that you have
to perform or else your job's gone. He's had this
job for three months.
Speaker 2 (02:03:16):
Well, that's in large part thanks to the fact that
Chaz was the guy that would have taken his job.
And he sucks, that's true, but he the pressure is
off and he's performing badly. Here's the deal, though very
badly offensively, he has he has never been fully healthy.
Speaker 3 (02:03:33):
I think until at the beginning of this year. It
was always because I just don't believe that because you shouldn't.
Speaker 2 (02:03:41):
It's true, because it's almost like an Achilles injury for
a football player, you really need to see year two
afterwards to see what they're actually.
Speaker 3 (02:03:49):
Going to be.
Speaker 2 (02:03:50):
I mean, I think that was a it was clearly
a catastrophic injury, but I think internally like it's just
and then mentally what it did to him, because even
if you're all right physically, which there might have been
the tail end of last year where that was the case,
but his body language didn't even look great when he
was just on the field before a game.
Speaker 4 (02:04:09):
Again, everything you're saying, I think everybody would agree with
Jake's basically said as much. I think we know from
an injury standpoint that's usually the case. He's played two
hundred and sixty some odd games since the injury twenty
twenty two and twenty three. Clearly, I don't think he
was himself.
Speaker 3 (02:04:23):
He's this is who he is.
Speaker 4 (02:04:26):
I'm surprised it's been this poor and maybe I'm being
too harsh, but an ops plus a ninety four, an
ops of six eighty nine, the insanely high strikeout rate.
The more he's played, the less productive he's been. Take
three hours today with us, We did we share it fairly?
Did we drop blame around enough? I think we hit Bregman,
(02:04:48):
We even got jord On. I talked about how it's
almost impossible that Yaners had as many hits as he
has as the cleanup hitter with so few RBI. Like
this last home stand he had seventeen hits. I've runs
batt in he's the cleanup hitter. How is that even possible?
But that's what happened, and the rest of the lineup.
I think y'all's shares comparable blame. Pitching's been fine, even
(02:05:10):
not just the last two days when they only got
or they got six innings and only one run allowed
by their two stars.
Speaker 3 (02:05:16):
The pitcher was fine before that.
Speaker 4 (02:05:17):
Pitchuing obviously was good with Kokuchie. It was good in
each of these other series, and they just cannot find
a way to, you know, shake it. Thirty three game
losing streaks since the All Star break. I can't wait
to come in and do the show after another. No,
they are winning tonight. They are absolutely winning tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:05:33):
And you know what, they're scoring five or more runs
because I'm not listening to whatever version of lent that
was that Matt Thomas was doing earlier today, they were
all giving up something until the Astros score five runs.
Speaker 3 (02:05:46):
Well, they were sacrificing something, right.
Speaker 4 (02:05:48):
Yeah, Elton John was playing like what a huge shot?
What was being sacrificed going to one of his concerts.
Speaker 2 (02:05:56):
Ross gave up alcohol, that's not Connor gave up weas okay,
and of course Matt gave up potatoes of any kind.
Speaker 3 (02:06:06):
I'm gonna have some fries when I get home tonight,
That's what I'm gonna do. What a sacrifice.
Speaker 2 (02:06:11):
