Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adham talking Your Teams series.
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A team A.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
You look at it, Look at it, look at it.
Oh yeah, this is radio. You listen to it on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Astro's broadcaster Jeff Blaum on seven ninety is drought to
you by low T Center.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Oh yeah, this is radio and TV simulcast on Space
City Home Network. Here at just passed three oh one
on a Wednesday afternoon here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Wexac of course, and Jeff Blum nice enough to spend
a little time with us here in the very odd
October off season in studio as there are four Major
(00:56):
League Baseball games today and there will be two teams
in the American Championship Series, but for the first time
and quite some time, none of them will. What do
you look for, Houston Astros. He's looking to see which
one of you is gonna cry first. It's probably what
say say? It's weird.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
It is weird. Weird, man, We have done this in
forever eight years. This sucks, doesn't it?
Speaker 2 (01:16):
It does kind of suck. I mean, I have fun
watching baseball, but to have more fun watching the Astros.
And the part that I miss is the chaos before
the game, Yeah, because that was kind of the That
was the fun as the player. Being in the postseason
is the attention you get and then being on the
other side of the microphone and being on the field
for some of that chaos and being able to talk
(01:37):
to the guys and they almost kind of they almost
kind of some guys will seek you out just because
you're the normalcy in the Yeah, Hunter Brown, the Alex Bragman's,
you know, even the Al two Vays will come over
and give you a little bit of a fist pump.
There's just a little bit of normalcy in that. But
I do miss seeing those guys. But I know they
were beat the hell. I mean, we found out about
Mauricio Dubond having to have surgery on his thumb, what
(01:57):
he was fighting through, But I feel like we talk
about that at the end of every October. Usually at
the end of every October is how these guys were
fighting through some injuries. I know these guys are kind
of beat the hell to get into this position. But
as hard as it is to watch some of these
games without the blue and orange out there. I'm exhausted.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Well, that's what I was gonna get to.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
I feel like more than any other season during this run,
and I don't think it's a coincidence that it was the.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Latest season of this long run.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
I felt like everybody involved in Astros Baseball, whether it's
the players themselves, the coaching staff, people like you, Todd,
Julia just it was a mentally taxing twenty twenty four
for a variety of reasons. And it's not to say
that you're happy at all, but you're just like, you're
(02:46):
not exactly unwelcoming of a just decompression moment right now.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Yeah, And if you were going to have it, and
this is I'm not saying this run is over. I'm saying,
if you if you wanted your season to be abruptly ending,
I think that eighth season is okay. And you also
did it by winning the American League West, so I
think that's kind of a big deal. And you also
leave your stamp and your championship right in front of
everybody in the American League West because if you go
(03:12):
north into South Oklahoma, a lot of fans up there,
and even I think Marcus Simeon even had some quotes saying,
you know what, we were tired after winning that one title.
It was really exhausting.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Soft yes, awft they buy that.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
I think that's the difference between them and us is
our fans were like, the hell with that. We're pissed,
we're out in the first round. Let's turn around and
see what we can do next season. But I think
that's where the focus has shifted so quickly for this
organization is we're a little upset we're not here, but
we know that we want to be back here again
and we want to get deeper. So how do we
do that? They're already looking towards next season.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Well, there's one main way that you continue this run.
So the elephant in the room.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Have you spoken to Breggy? Has he told you he's
coming back here?
Speaker 2 (03:54):
I have not. I mean, I would love to.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Alex get out here. Hey, this is on the record.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
By the way, I'm screenshotting every text he's sent me
from here until December. No, I've actually kind of pulled
back a little bit. You know, he is such. He's
been very good to me. I know, he's been very
good to a lot of people in this city, more
notably the fans and the on the organization, but just
on the periphery being able to be around him selfishly.
(04:20):
I'm gonna you know, I would. I would thoroughly be
upset if I didn't have conversations with him moving forward
in the city of Houston. But these are decisions that
are going to be made in in uh, in wallets.
There are gonna be decisions that are made behind closed doors.
There are gonna be decisions and phone calls that are
made between people and UH if the people come out
on top, I think he ends up being here, But
(04:42):
I mean that's just up to Alex. Alex literally has
put himself in a position to do literally whatever he wants,
and being here I think extends a legacy, It extends
a friendship, it extends a relationship where we are beyond
intimate with Alex Brigman and what he's done for this
city and what what we expect from So whatever he does,
I know it's going to be the best for Alex
(05:03):
and his family. But at the same time, he's got
an extended family here that probably will go into that
thought process.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
How can you if you could encapsulate how much you
think he meant to this year's team and the last
several years teams and to his next team beyond the Homers, fielding, plays,
base running, et cetera. All the stuff that maybe isn't well,
it's definitely not on the back of a baseball card.
I'll say that, how much do you think he means
(05:30):
to whatever team he's on.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah, this is the quote unquote noise that doesn't make
it into an algorithm. Is this is something? And it
goes back to the to the year he got drafted.
He gets drafted number two overall. He's got the chip
on the shoulder because he wanted to be number one.
Yet he is in an organization that's up and coming
with some great talent, most notably the guy that was
drafted ahead of him and is currently playing shortstop as
(05:54):
he's drafted as a shortstop. So if you want to
look into the mind of Alex Bragman from the outside,
how about looking into the fact that he said, you
know what, this team's going to be damn good for
a pretty long time. I'm not going to piss and
moan about not being a shortstop. I'm going to go
out and carve out my own arc at third base
and that's exactly what he did, and in turn, the
(06:15):
team got better. He got better. He has rings, he's
got championship trophies, he's got bonuses, and he got an
extension early on in his career as an Astro, and
now he's seeking another one. And what he did this
last season maybe exposed a little more than maybe all
of us anticipated, because there were some gaps in that
leadership in the clubhouse for the Astros, and he more
(06:37):
than philled it. He became he became a personal pitching
coach for some guys. He became a mental life coach
for some guys. I'm sure inside that clubhouse. Considering everything
he's been through, he's also proven that you can go
through hell and come out on top. Considering what happened
in twenty twenty when he was made the face of
this problem that the Astros had, and he still succeeded.
(06:59):
He continued too. I mean, he has shown resiliency, he's
shown poise, and he's shown a maturity that I think
that maybe we didn't even expect.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
I think it's interesting that and we talked about this
extensively with our good buddy Chandler Rome.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
You know, the most bitter twenty five year old on
the planet.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
We all love him, God bless him, and and you
know he said this. We've said it the Full Court Press,
the public Full Court Press by jose Al Tuvey. It's
more than just the fact that they have the same agent.
But yeah, yeah, I mean, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
No, But I was just I was saying that I
was actually watching part of that. I listen. You know, Chandler,
I think has got a pretty good pull, so we
can say he is the most bitter twenty five year
old on the planet. But I also think that he's
got a pretty good handle on who these guys are
and what they're trying to achieve. And the fact that
he is recognizing that. You know that josel how many
(07:50):
other players that have left this organization that were key pieces.
I know that jose loved them all and didn't want
them to leave, But how many did he step up
and say he's not going anywhere. He It wasn't hope,
it was he's not going anywhere. He's staying here. He's
gonna be one of us.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
I can't see one of us.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I can't see it. You know, can't can't understand running
over with a ground bow to third base and not
getting a throw from Alex Bregnant.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
I mean when he says something like that, Jim Crane,
Dana Brown, or Alex.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Well, I would say Alex just because we all know
how friendships work, and when you've had a thriving, successful
relationship with somebody, you don't want to sever that. You
don't want to let that person down. And I'm not
saying that's what's gonna happen. I mean there's gonna be
disappointment across the board, even for Alex if he signed
somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
He doesn't want to leave he I.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Don't think he. I really don't think he does. Just
just my personal opinion of knowing who Alex is and
being around that Alex family is everything to him. His
wife is from here, is h These are guys that
he literally cut his teeth with. I mean, he's had
broken hearts with these guys, and he's also achieved the
ultimate dream with these guys. That's a tough tide to seven.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Now.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
And you mentioned the broken heart. You weren't in there,
but I've told you this story. You were in there.
I believe after twenty nineteen, that's the one I'm always
gonna be the most bitter about you walk into the clubhouse.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
It was a morgue.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
And I've been in a clubhouse after they've lost the
World Series good, I think good other years. Alex Bregman
is sitting on the floor next to Jose Altuve. They're
basically leaning against each other, and he's got bloodshot eyes.
He's been crying like it was they knew that one
was the one. I think, Atlanta. It's like house money.
We talk about all these World Series losses, by the way,
(09:40):
which is just ridiculous in and of itself, but that.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Was the one, and that that was where I was like, man.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
This clubhouse is I heard it in Yeah, man, I
saw it for myself, at least from my own personal experience.
And I always share that story because Alex Bregman was
the one guy. I remember his face. It's burned in
my memory after they lost in twenty nineteen.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
How even as broadcasters and media members on how we
cover this team, how how many other teams in other
cities and organizations or wherever they are have been able
to like envelop us and bring us into the situation
and make us feel what they're feeling. That's what I
think is incredible about these guys is that we witness
(10:23):
some of the joy and some of the pain, but
we're with them. Yeah, that's how I feel like these
guys have been for the last eight years. We are
with them. They're not doing this for us, They're not
doing it in spite of us. They're doing it for
and with us.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
It's been a unique situation and I think that's part
of what's been the winning formula here is just the
way this clubhouse is. And you see it when guys
come in. I bet if you talk to Josh Hater
about it, he would talk about it. He's just the
latest example of that. So, Yeah, it has been quite
the run. Don't want it to end. And that's a
big puzzle piece in this offseason for an Astros team
(10:56):
that has a lot of questions to answer. Jeff Blum's
going to answer all of them over the next forty
five minutes as he's in studio with us here for
the remainder of this hour here on a Wednesday edition
of The A Team Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Ninety The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Hey at Berkeley Center.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
They're gonna do more than just simply correct your astigmatism
during LASIK. Their renowned LASIK team actually specializes in treating
a stigmatism. So if that's what you've been diagnosed with,
or maybe you've been told you're not a LASK candidate
because of your astigmatism, give them a call because there's
always something that can be done at seven one three
five two six eyes seven one three five two six
(11:38):
eyes for Berkeley I Center. I had the LASIK procedure
done with them way back in two thousand and eight,
been seeing twenty twenty ever since. It's just life changing.
It's absolutely, uh, everything you would hope it would be
and more, and it's instantaneous. You start seeing better immediately
and it just keeps getting better. But for a free
consultation to permanently correct your a stigma and give you
(12:01):
thirty percent off your procedure where you can even use
your health Savings account or flex spinning account for tax
free lasic, give them a call. Seven one three five
two six e y ees. The A team continues.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Sports Talk seven nineties.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
All right, we are in studio with Jeff Blum here
and our boy Mark from Ramshirts is here. I just
want to throw this out there. This is my mindset
for the remainder of the playoffs. I hope you guys
can see this on camera. This is how I feel.
I told WEX the other day the postseason ended last
Wednesday afternoon. Not only y'all are talking about, but then
(12:40):
I find myself at least looking at the app to
see what the score is.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Now, suck it, Dodgers. It was awesome last night.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Let's say, now you're cheering against cheering four to one.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Today.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Dude, you ain't lying. Yeah, I think it's kind of
exciting to watch some of that, and I think the
way it's unfolding, it's it'll be interesting if, man, could
you imagine if the camp if the Royals somehow get
past the New York Yankees, and the championship series in
the American League goes through the American League Central.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
That's unbelievable to me. I know, you've got ties to
Kansas City, and it'd be a lot of fun for
you and the family to watch. But at the same time,
what the hell.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
My mother in law is like, I hate the Yankees.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
I'm like, yeah, well that's a long list. Yeah yeah,
go ahead and join that, join that ride we're in.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Well, I just I mean, they've got the team to
do it. I thought about this, and Wex, of course
was way out in front of this ales wide open.
If the Astros are out, it's even more wide open.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
And I think that, I mean, we all probably agree
on this National League is strong this year. I think
they've got the contending teams on that side and they're
gonna have to duke it out to get into the
World Series. But at the same time, looking at the
American League, that's why I had I had a lot
of hope this season for the Astros because if they
were able to get over that Detroit Tiger hump or
whatever the heck is, you know it infiltrated their psyche
(14:01):
against that team.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
They'd be destroying Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
They'd be crushing Cleveland. They man handled them every game
this year except for one, and it would have been
a lot of fun to watch them do that and
then get into the Alcs and then have the mind
game leverage over the Yankees if they got past the Royals.
But at the same time, the Astro swept the Royals
at home. So I was looking at this and I
mean statistic, statistically, on paper, you said these guys could
(14:26):
these guys could run it into the World Series again,
because the American League is not that strong. That being said,
once you get to the World Series, it's a different animal.
And I think that right now my feelings on the
Nation League side are kind of coming true a little bit,
because I know the Dodgers have dealt with injury much
like every other organization in the league. But after watching
(14:48):
the Padres in the middle of September against the Astros,
dear lord, that is an absolute beast. And we didn't
even get to see the attitude. We just saw baseball
baseball alone. These guys were animal, and now you have
the little, little.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
It's likable attitude. I don't know, maybe I'm maybe anything
means they feel like they don't. I mean, the national
media can't stop falling over themselves to do what they're
doing with Manny Machado. They can't even stop slobbering over
that storyline. And what happened in last night's game is
(15:24):
more fuel to the fire. A perfectly smart and legal play.
The umpire wasn't a counter for not calling it. The
umpire didn't, isn't he? What's that?
Speaker 4 (15:35):
Well, if you're ranking the Heels, isn't he third in
line behind Prof.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Sperience is a former Yankee that no one can talk.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
And he played with or against Dave. He played four
Dave Robbers, I think when he was a Dodger. I
mean that is where it started. And then he threw
a ball at me. I was in front of it.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
I was a light toss.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Well, but if he did, if you're telling me, if
he wanted to hit you with a baseball, guess what
were it would have been somewhere closer to you than
it was.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
We're just lucky Bob Costas wasn't calling that game. He
would have cried his eyes out.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Or you would have taken a nap. Love. But going
back to that play, it is a perfectly legal play.
And guess what, if you're on my team and you
don't do that, I'm going to tell you next time
you get in this position, run to the inside. Now
getting on the infild grass. That was a little aggressive,
but at the same time it was that was one
of the more savvy plays that you're gonna see in baseball,
(16:36):
because when you are running and you're not being tagged,
you create whatever baseline you want. He could have run
into right field or center field if he wanted to,
but he decided to run in the throwing lane, which
is brilliant. If he was on second base and there's
a ground ball a short and they're gonna try and
make that play at third, guess what I'm doing. I'm
taking me a wide ass turn and getting right in
(16:56):
the way of that throw, and I'm gonna make the
shortstop throw it somewhere else, Yeah, Freddie, And he was
on his knees. Freddie didn't get up to make a
stronger throw.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
After the game, Freddy said, look, we're taught to do that.
I wouldn't have done him from his own defensive position.
He said, I thought I'd made a good throw. I
thought I'd gotten around him. He clipped his shoulder. We're
taught to do that. It's the same you know. We
would have done the same thing. Now. That play was big.
The next play was bigger. When they get zero outs
on a ground ball to the short side, gotta flip
(17:25):
it because you have to have an out. But both
first and second barely beat the plays. They had another
infield hit in the inning, and obviously Fernando is all
about the moment. Man his home runs are fun.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Tank just standing there and embracing it. I love the
fact that.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
Books someone who pointed out that the homeplay umpire had
already thrown the ball back to Bueler before his trot
had even started, because he was watching it for such
a long period of time.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Hiring it is he is a very, very talented athlete,
and he's a really good ball player. But yeah, that
was that was impressive and watching there is a little
bit of joy watching Teoscar Hernandez hit that home hit
for several reasons. Granted it was a big hit, Grandad,
he's an ex Astro. It's also an extra Mariner. I
mean that that that guy and au Henninger Suarez weren't
(18:17):
good enough to play for the Mariners this season with
the rotation they had. I'm just throwing that out there,
just there.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
They both ended up driving in a lot of runs.
They strike out, they do the Mariners missed. They absolutely
do the thing. They struck out without them plenty this year,
but they didn't have the run production without them this year,
so it definitely took a turn in the wrong direction.
The Astros that just eighty eight wins win the Division
two more wins than two of the teams that are
(18:42):
still playing, including the one that beat them. This Cleveland
and Detroit series begins with the Guardians scoring five runs
before even an out is recorded. And here we are
in the fifth inning of Game three and the Gardenians
have scored two runs. Since they're working through their second
consecutive game of being shut out by the Tigers. It's
(19:02):
two nothing in the top of the fifth. Of course,
in Detroit, now four Game three. All four series were
a game apiece last night. The two NL teams that
took a two games to one lead, the aforementioned Padres
and Ryan Stanek and film Aton's New York Mets took
a two games over the Phillies. Not Pete Alonzo, He's throw.
Those are the guys.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Basically, yes, awesome.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
I love it and love it. The Mets are what
kind of postseason baseball can be. If we want to
say anybody can win, if we want to say, you
just have to get to the dance. Last year we
saw two wild card teams get to the World Series.
The Mets are forced to play games on the off
day on Monday just to get into the playoffs. Then
(19:47):
they're forced to play the second game of the doubleheader
to not get anybody hurt because they have nothing to
play for. But the Diamondbacks and Braves do Braves are
playing them and here they are just feeding off of
all that they're bent there. They don't have pitchers. Everybody's aghast,
and they're about to win their second consecutive series.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Yeah, it's it's crazy, and there's there's a potential for
a New York Mets Detroit Tigers little series.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
I'm here for it too.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
I mean, just because we love Rob Manford so much
that we want him to deal with that. He his
only solace would be that there'd be at one major
market in there and New.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
York went to the World Series. Man, you're in the
fetal position because it's not your team exactly.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Yeah, yes, what part of the office is going to
take care of that World Series?
Speaker 6 (20:35):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (20:35):
But yeah, it's crazy, but that just goes to your point.
Just get a ticket to the dance and then throw
everything you have at the wall. And there's nothing worse
in a fight in a game and whatever it is.
When you're playing or fighting against somebody who has nothing
to lose, literally nothing to lose, nobody expect anything about
the about the Mets. Every bitch to moan about their clubhouse.
Guess what, they're playing great baseball and they're a little
(20:56):
possessed right now in Detroit is just.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Like whatever Detroit's that's the American League version of the Mets.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
The Mets.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
The Tigers had nothing to lose. The Tigers also, I mean,
they get to the whole second game of the playoffs
and they already gotta go bullpen game, and they've gone
two bullpen games, and today's another bullpen game. But they're
in it, and they do. They are clearly playing with
nothing to lose. It was obvious when they were here
in Houston. It's been obvious through the two plus games
now against the Guardians. They have one person with extreme
(21:23):
experience in postseason baseball, and he's their manager, and they're
just kind of until you tell us we're not supposed
to be here, we're gonna just keep playing ball. I mean,
a three run homer off the best closer in baseball
to win Game two from Kerry Carpenter. Do I hope
our listeners and viewers recognize that that's why this golden
era of Astros baseball, it's not just a great time.
(21:43):
It's not just fun. We're this fired up and juiced
up about the other series that they're not even in
this year. But this is what we've got to experience,
you guys, fans have gotten to live through since twenty fifteen,
essentially welling like it.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
There is nothing like it. And you'll, I mean, we
would love to continue to experience this for years and
years and years, but if we never do again, you've
got to appreciate the last eight years. But to your
point about some of the Cinderellas, I mean, there's been
number one seeds in the NBA, in the NC DOUBLEA
in football, where you're going, dear God, don't let this
seven seed or eight seed beat me, and all of
(22:18):
a sudden, you're like, here comes the Cinderella story that
we hear about all the time. The Astros are not
only fighting the best teams in baseball for the last
eight years, they've had to fight off some of those
Cinderella teams too.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
Well, they had to in twenty nineteen. I mean, the
tend to beat them was they had no business beating.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
That was a literal flash in the pan.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
Yeah, because look at them now, well they're starting to
come around now, but now it.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
Took them eight six years to come back.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
This is why though I get so upset about the
whole you know, oh they'ree like.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
You cannot ignore what they've done with.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
The teams that were doing the same thing exactly.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
In the sustained exit that of the list. It's so
much harder in baseball to do than in any other sport.
It really is, because of all the moving parts and
everything that with it. We got another half hour to
go with Jeff Blum here on Sports Talk seven ninety

Speaker 3 (24:15):
Hey, it is good for listen to Rockets Radio or
your smart device. Just ask I lay sports Stock seven
ninety on iHeart Radio. A lot of areas for us
to focus on, including your Houston astro. Spent a little
bit of time with Jeff Blum here of the first
half hour, talking about the postseason activities for.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Major League Nico Collins. Damn it awesome.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
College.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
We can talk college football. I'm all about the SEC
right now, Arkansas. But what do you want to talk about? First?
Nico Collins being on my ir on my fantasy football team.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
I drafted Rist three, number one overall. So this is
on my IR man. You got him too, I had Nico.
This is how idiotic. My good boys, if you're listening,
I'm sorry. They're California there, and I listened to anything.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
I I picked up. I had the first overall pick,
christ McCaffrey, boom. I waited till the second round, picked
up Mike Evans, and I purposely picked Nico Collins in
the first pick of the third round, on purpose, just
to thummet. And all their eyes are like, well, you
can do a phone, dude. I'm like, what. Nico Collins
is the man, and he has been going berserk.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
And I know that for Nico Collins because they did
put him on IR today. He is the NFL's leading receiver,
and I'm glad that both his coach and his quarterback
at the podium since Sunday, I have said the obvious.
He's been the best receiver in football this year. And
now the best receiver in football is off the field
for the next four games for the Texans, starting Sunday
against the New England Patriots. I don't think it's a
(25:46):
huge surprise that he was going to miss some time.
I think the word and the oh my gosh, he's on.
He was going to miss two or three weeks probably anyway,
so I think there's hope that he's on there. So
in four weeks he met Ken return.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
The next four they've got New England and Green Bay,
the Indianapolis.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
The Holts, and the Jets very good on Halloween.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Well, there we go. That's okay. They Jets suck now,
I was gonna say that, man wow. And Aaron Rodgers
the New York Mets of the New York Jets.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
No, the Mets are good.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Yeah, the Mets are way better. They're happy. The Jets
are doing what they're doing.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
The Jets are a messa.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
CJ. Shroud's gonna find a way. That's what it is
incredible about watching the Texans. Now, I mean, DeMarco's got
the mindset, but now you've got a quarterback who can
initiate that mentality as well. But you're really, I mean,
you're missing the best receiver, but there are a couple
of guys that might be able to step up.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
It's you know, having three guys for Demico's offense, to
have three receivers that they brought in did was there
something wrong with their passing game last year, clearly there
was not. Can it be better? Yes? And you have
the depth factor now in place. Your number one receiver
this weekend against the Patriots Stefon Diggs, your number two
receivers tanked Dell. Where fast is to be?
Speaker 2 (26:57):
You've got receiver I was thinking too. Just as far
as team.
Speaker 4 (27:00):
One, especially as the Patriots now Green Bay, that's gonna be.
You would like to have all your guns for that fight.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
But well, your offense actually has to get better because
they've had Nico, Steph and Tank every week but won
this year, and we're still looking at their offense saying
there's more to come. There's better football that we just
haven't seen yet. He exists, but he probably should have,
in hindsight, spent time on IR because this will be
(27:26):
the fourth consecutive game he will miss this week. If
we're me guessing based on where things were today. He
did not practice today, and Damian Pierce did return, and
Damien's gonna play on Sunday if there are no setbacks,
according to Demico earlier today. So glad you're in here.
Jeff Blum talking Texans football here with us on Sports
Talk seven nine. Yeah, so you were actually there for
(27:48):
this wild weekend in the SEC, in front of what
we thought would be, oh, the SEC season. It'll get
started with Texas OU and then the following week Georgia
and Texas play George and Alabama really launched a man season.
And then what happened this past weekend with Vandy beating Bama.
And you were there for Arkansas triumph over Tennessee, and
(28:08):
you were there off field.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
And that's why my voice sounds the way it is.
I'm fighting it a little bit still because we kind
of lost our mind a little bit, and just I mean,
everybody knows that I have three of my four daughters
go to Arkansas, so obviously I'm invested greatly financially with them,
but I'm also invested in because.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
Because that bill like Blumber.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Well, I may not retire for a very long time,
but you know, they love it, you know, and I
love going up there too because this is my exposure
to the SEC. And a little other known fact is
that my brother played baseball at Arkansas, so he is
a Razorback by by going to school there. And oddly enough,
(28:49):
in nineteen ninety nine, when the Razorbacks last beat Tennessee
at home. He was a part of that. He charged
the field as a student on that So fast forward
to last weekend. The one of the assistant athletic directors
is one of my college teammates. Wow, so I get
tickets maybe, and we got ridiculously good tickets.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
I would imagine.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
We were literally at the tunnel where the team came
out of so we were hyped about that. The final
touchdown was scored maybe fifteen yards in front of us,
so that was kind of cool. And my brother was
sitting alongside me and my wife the entire time going nuts.
He was loving at reliving the entire situation. And we
had plans of leaving it half because the fourteen points spread.
I'm like, boys, this could get ugly early. I'm like,
we'll have plans three to nothing after half. I'm like,
(29:36):
let's hold on and see what happens. Yeah, happens quick.
Fourteen points. You're going, okay, here they come, and then
all of a sudden they stopped him and scored, stopped
them and scored. You're going, dude, these guys have a chance.
And it's the second that their quarterback ran out of
bounds and all hell broke loose. I told my wife
maybe about ten minutes left to go, I go, they
pull this off, We're going.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
And she looked at me like we're going on the
field like that hell we are.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
And I said, I go, stay with me. I go.
We won't be the initial blast of students, right, but
we will go. And I don't I didn't even talk
to my buddy who gave me the tickets, and I
don't know if he got in trouble or you know whatever.
I went, Yeah, there was a little uh, there was
a there was a piece of rope keeping us from
going to the field. On how we went to the
food and I want her to do it wasn't there
(30:22):
when I got there, and so we were just jumping
for joy, high five and everybody on the planet. And
next thing, you know, dragging my wife by the hand,
I'm like, here we go. We're on the field. And
we were sitting there right at midfield, you know, high
five and a couple players. I felt like I was
eighteen again until I woke up the next day.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
Every time I see my stepdaughter taking pictures, yes, KR.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
I'm like, great as that.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
I'm so jealous though, because I just I'm like, I
haven't been to a UT game, I think since twenty twelve,
and it's just everybody knows I'm more of a pro
guy than college. But I'm like, right back, even he
was like, wow, college football, you like it?
Speaker 3 (30:56):
Huh. I'm like, yes, incredible.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
He sees so incredible.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
It's always good.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
But the experience, I mean, you'll hear ole miss is
amazing you. Hear lsu is amazing you.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Hear that stop.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
We're in Fayetteville, freaking Arkansas.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
I'm going to say this right now as this as
a sneaking to the whole state's underrated. It's completely beautiful
up there during the fall. I've been there during I've
been there for Thanksgiving in the fall. Believe it or not,
I was I was much younger, but I remember it now.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
I've never been to a game. I've never been to Fayetteville.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
It's incredible. Yeah, I was eighty five thousand people screaming
wu pig suey at the same time.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
It's insane, which I don't know what that means, but uh,
I mean, I'll do it. Yeah, all of the things.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
It's great. It's great.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
Yeah, I did call it celebration deep into later in
the night prevent you from seeing cal Miami.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
No, because because the the apartment or house I went
to had it on their big screen and I had
inflatable had the counch was yes, yeah, even better. Yeah,
I slid off the first time. You know, old muscles
get back and you know, but I watched it and
then got an uber home. By the time I ubered home,
(32:04):
Miami's making a run back at it. And then the
targeting call everything about it, I'm like, that was so
cow and I don't mean so cal in southern California.
That was just so cal.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
To top all this off, are you going to be
at LSU's game this weekend? Yes, LSU hosting ole.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Miss and it's the one hundredth anniversary of Death Valley.
I'm learning so much about these schools, but.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
What he's enjoying their free October.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Oh my gosh. Yeah. So I'm gonna be there this
weekend for this LSU uh hosting ole Miss because it's
Alpha Fi Dad's weekend. I will be there for that
highly entertaining. We'll be at the parade grounds. If you
see me wave and then guess what happens the following
week because Arkansas has an off week. The following week,
LSU is at Arkansas. Guess who's going man, Look at
(32:50):
you and guess when the Colts come to town. Guess
who's going to that game?
Speaker 3 (32:54):
Wow? Off season, dude, what a life one tour is
in full effect. He's playing golf too. What is even
bast hurt? Still feeling it?
Speaker 2 (33:03):
All right?
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Blummer's still feeling it in studio in more ways than one.
So we will have one more segment with him, and
then we will call it a three o'clock hour here
on a Wednesday edition of the program.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety one show Two
Adams and Less Possibilities eighteen continues on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
Another segment with Jeff Blum in studio here both right
here on Sports Talk seven ninety had Space City Home
Network featuring our simulcasts each of every day three to six.
Here wex a c Dan along with Jeff, and we
talked about a lot of different things here, and certainly
one of the things here regarding the Astros. I don't
know how everybody else viewed those two games. There are
(33:53):
a lot of different negatives to come out of it,
because obviously the season ended, but something still stood out
to me on the very best possible direction for this franchise,
and that's what the Game two starting pitcher delivered. This
is backs against the wall for him in his very
first major league postseason start. He'd obviously appeared in games,
and that started a game short series. You lose Game
(34:15):
one and all of a sudden, it is do or die.
It is our last day of the season if we
don't win, and he goes out there and pitches extremely well.
He was asked after the game, did you know, do
you take any solace and how you performed today? He goes, no,
we lost and moves on to the next question. He
is everything you want in an ace. Is it too
soon to say he's an ace?
Speaker 2 (34:35):
No, I'm in And it was kind of the evolution
of Hunter Brown this season because of the way he
got off to that start, a little bit of a
slow start. He was kind he was still trying to
kind of find himself and and we know he had
opportunities to start moved out of the bullpen there. You know,
there was a lot of fluctuation. I think four Hunter
Brown in trying to figure out who he was this year.
(34:57):
But those first four or five starts didn't go as
well as he wont on. It was really sitting on
that outside corner to right handed hitters with fastball, cutter, slider, curveball.
Didn't get hit hard, but got hit hard enough to
give up a ton of runs and maybe lost a
little bit of an idea of who he was. But
I think that that relief outing in Detroit where he
(35:17):
kind of had a little one on one with himself
and said, we need to get back to who Hunter
Brown is. And it's with that fastball that has a
lot of disdain behind it. And it was also the
idea of how do I get inside on right handed hitters?
How do I create a pitch that can you know,
start to blow these guys up and make them a
little more aware of the inside corner so I can
throw my cutters, curveballs and sliders on the outside corner.
(35:41):
And even though it, you know, analytically, it doesn't have
the shape you want. Or I don't even know what
a profile means. And it drives me nuts when they
say that, because I don't give a damn what profiles?
How did you get the guy out?
Speaker 3 (35:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (35:54):
You know? Because I mean I was. You know, there's
certain guys that just he looks terrible fielding a ground ball,
but he gets the out every time.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
A lot of lying business.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
I like that guy. Yeah, his swing's a little funky.
Well he gets hits, you know. It's so he figured
out that that two seamer allowed him to get to
the inside corner and not worry about. What's even better
about that is, in talking to him over the year,
is he had one start where that two seamer was
just running all over the place up and d. He
hit a couple of guys, walked a bunch and just
(36:21):
didn't have the command. He still fought through six innings.
But I asked him the next day and I'm like, hey,
you know, were you annoyed at your two seamer? And
he's like no, he goes, I don't care. He goes,
that's where I want that pitch. He goes, I want
that to be on the inner third inner edge, off
the inside corner. And he goes, if they swing, they
get destroyed. If they don't, they take it for a
ball or I hit him. He goes, I don't care.
(36:42):
He goes, I want that to set up my other stuff.
And that's exactly what he did the rest of the year.
Speaker 4 (36:46):
He's such a fascinating case because he really was like
on the fringe of what are we going to do
with this guy? Yeah, I mean that's crazy to think about,
but that was where And honestly, it wasn't just that
he turned things around. Part of the reason he had
the opportunity to turn things around was because I think,
and I've got to keep my injury straight.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
You'll know this better than I will.
Speaker 4 (37:07):
I think it was Christian Hobvier's injury that kind of
opened that door. Well, he has to pitch now because
one of our starters is down, and that just happened
to coincide with where he kind of turned himself around
his game, and man, he is I hope that this
carries over, like you know, because it wasn't just this year.
He was carrying over last year's ghosts, I think into
(37:28):
this year. So I'm really loving to see that turn around.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
Well to your guys point too, I mean, you've got
a guy here in CJ. Shroud who looks like he
could be the guy. He also talks like he should
be the guy. He also leads like he should be
the guy.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
He's got those intents.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
I feel like Hunter's kind of evolving into that guy
because that answer immediately, not even thinking about it. And
I don't care if he was thinking about it. In
the fifth thing, If we lose this game, I'm gonna
be pissed. And he pitched pissed because that he gave
up the lead. And that's what you love about these
guys who are in that leadership position of being an
ACE or being the star quarterback or the guy that's
expected to win. You want him to have the answer like,
(38:02):
you know what, I don't give a damn. I threw seven,
shut up, but we still lost. It's not a good day.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
I wonder if late in the game he was actually thinking, well,
since we just took the lead and we're gonna win,
should I go tell Joe and Miller that I can
give him an inning tomorrow. I mean, that's how I
feel like he's going out there.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
You know he would too.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
Yeah, so you were you were in the league for
fourteen years, you've been around the game ever since. Obviously
in the booth, you remember playing with Against calling a
game of a player going out there wearing a brace
on his knee, like Jordon Alvarez was dude.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
No, No. I think the legend grows a little bit
with this guy. But uh, and you know, knowing the
people that we know and having the conversations that we have,
trying to figure out how to say this because even
though even though on the outside looking in realizing that
Jordan had a knee brace on and went out there
and played, he shouldn't have been out there.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
I mean, as evidenced by him dragging his head that
question during the season.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
Well, if this were the playoffs, would you be out there?
That was the example of what answered you get, Because
it is the playoffs. He went out there and perform there.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
And the and the story goes exactly how you think
it would with your don is you know he was
on that last trip. You come home, get ready for
the or the wild card game, and you open the
door and say, you know, hey, you're done. Can we talk?
And he goes no. He goes, I'm gonna, I'm gonna,
I'm gonna take this. I'm gonna put on the knee brace.
I can swing a bat. He goes, don't expect me
(39:26):
to go first to third. Don't expect me to go
the extra ninety feet or bolt down the line to
beat down an infield hit. I can hit, and that's
all they needed to hear. He's got incredible Yeah. No,
and he's a freak.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
And you and Todd would talk about this, particularly this
season because he had so many stolen base attempts for him.
Is there any scenario where the team tells him not
to try and go? Yeah, I'm sure, but I mean,
guys like him, are they gonna take that?
Speaker 2 (39:54):
So one of the things that that's hard to relay
when you're calling a game, for when you call one
hundred and sixty two games, is is there's going to
be a handful of guys that you ask to pull back.
If it's a routine groundball run, don't sprint, protect yourself,
don't go hard into a bag. Alex Josel Twove's done
it every once in a while, and that's everybody's like,
(40:15):
why don't you call him out? I'm like, because I
know how hard it is, and I know how hurt
he is right now, and he is going to It's
like going in there and paying full price for every
single car you buy. You're going to go and negotiate
and try and pull back if it's not a nice
enough car or you know, you're going to pick your
spots to go out there and spend, and they're using
it as far as energy expenditures, and they realize, I'm
(40:36):
out by forty five feet. I'm not going to bust
my ass down there to go, you know, hurt myself
or run into a bag or a throw gets offline,
and I put myself in a tough position. Jeremy Paine,
you could take up page.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
Of the only guy that would have scored that run.
Speaker 2 (40:52):
The only dude. He plays so freaking hard, so freaking
off it. It is wild to watch, but yeah, your done.
When he gets older, more mature, I think that he'll
understand position he's in, and you know, he's kind of
a protected species in our team, and I think the
more that he realizes him being healthy and out there,
the better the team's going to be. As much as
(41:14):
he wants to get the hit or gain the extra
ninety feets, there might be moments where you just say,
you know, it's okay, We'll drive you in on a
home run or something like that. You could jog in.
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Certainly been a pleasure for us all season long. Again,
having you in here with us, whether it's on the
phone or here in studio, which is even better along
with our simulcast here on Space City Home Network. I know,
obviously our listeners and now viewers as well appreciate everything
you bring to the program, and obviously the broadcasts.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
Thank you. You're making me feel sad. This is it.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
We also want to thank the people that help make
it possible.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
Well, they always do. Low T Center has been great.
Low T Center dot Com is where it's at for me,

Speaker 1 (43:25):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adham Talking Your Teams
series Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team.
A Team.
Speaker 4 (43:40):
Four o'clock hour underway here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
It's a Wednesday edition of the A Team. Thanks to
Jeff Blum for coming in over the past hour. Final
visit of the season. Now it really feels like the
Astro season is officially over, even though it's been a week.
It's been a week today right.
Speaker 3 (43:59):
Right Tuesday, Wednesday games one and till today, it.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
Seems like it's been It was Wednesday afternoon. It seems
like it's been a month since they've played baseball. Maybe
it's because of everything going on, which again just to
give you an update, because I think it was either passing.
I saw somebody last night from the Baseball World talk
about how crazy it was going to be between the
hours of like four o'clock starting now, because you're about
(44:25):
to have the second game start while the other one
is in the bottom of the sixth.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
Yeah, every two hours starting at two o'clock. There was
a new game set to at their first pitch the
last day of the season, where there will be four games.
One of the other elements that could be in place
as we moved through today, Well, there's six divisions in baseball,
so thus there are six division winners. Wildcard series features
two of them. They were both eliminated in the wildcard round.
(44:50):
The Brewers and the Astros, two division leaders, fell behind
in their series two games to one yesterday and now
are both facing elimination. The Phillies and the Dodge, two
other division winners, are playing today to prevent themselves from
falling behind two games to one. The Guardians currently playing
and not doing a very good job of that, considering
(45:11):
they are watching the Tigers bat in the bottom of
the sixth inning while the Tigers already lead three to nothing.
And obviously the Yankees will have their opportunity later tonight
to try to prevent that. But we could get to
the ALCS without in the NLCS, without any game fives,
and without any division winners.
Speaker 4 (45:30):
It's not how I would have predicted it, and yet
it is because of how this season went. Nobody won
one hundred games, Nobody really, I don't feel like, I mean,
was there a clear separation in any of the divisions
where it was like they were lapping the field.
Speaker 3 (45:45):
Every team and the Astros fit in here just like
them all. There's twelve teams in the playoffs and then
some of the teams that missed. Every team had a clear,
almost glaring weakness. You know, the Dodgers, they signed sho
he Otani because they wanted to basically be unbeatable as
an offense, which they still probably were, and he had
an unbelievable season. And then watch them in there now
(46:08):
only three games of the postseason. They don't have any pitching.
They don't have any starting pitching at all. And it's
it was they They didn't It's not like what happened.
They watched it unfold with Glassnow's injury and Yamamoto's injury.
Who came back for the postseason. Kershaw is not gonna
pitch here in the postseason. That's probably good for them.
And then Walker Buehler was asked to pitch on the
(46:28):
postseason after doing next to nothing good the entire regular season.
He actually has weird as it sounds, he saved them.
He saved the rest of their chances in this series
because with what he did yesterday, right, I know, he
gave up a huge what he settled down, but he
did and kept them in the game because they immediately
made it six ' five.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (46:48):
Okay, so all the you know, the Brewers are playing
without Yelich and their problems. I could go on and on.
Everybody had something which, as you described, it brought everybody
into the same exact pool. There's twelve lanes, twelve teams.
Nobody was way ahead of anybody else. When you built
some sort of lead as you're going through your freestyle,
you're then coming back to the pack when Garrett calls
(47:09):
out for two months, and you're coming back to the
pack when you know Kyle Tucker's out for two months,
and you're coming back to the pack when Baltimore is
trying to figure out the rotation and they had to
trade for a starting pitcher that got the game to assignment.
This postseason, they had pitching problems. I don't know what
to make of their offensive problems that showed up late
in the season and on into the postseason, but you
get the point. It does make for that wildness of
(47:30):
what the postseason is. We talked about that in that
third segment of about half an hour ago with Jeff
for second segment. Because of the excitements there. It's just unfortunate.
The excitement isn't there for the first time in a
long time for your Houston Astros. And the belief that
it isn't over. I still think it is shared by
most everybody. It's most important if it's shared by the
(47:51):
owner and the general manager, and I believe it is.
And then the next step has to be taken to
ensure that it isn't over. And that's where money or
very very shrewd acquisitions must come in.
Speaker 4 (48:02):
Well, and if you're if you're looking at it, and
we talked a little bit about this off air, if
you're looking at the Alex Bregman situation in the lens
of okay, it's one or the other. And if we're
going to re sign Alex Bregman, then maybe you're letting
Kyle Tucker walk or you're conceding that that's going to happen.
Speaker 3 (48:23):
I'm making him leave via trade.
Speaker 4 (48:25):
Well, that's the thing. If you're not going to sign
both of them, because that's how you want to do things.
And I'm not necessarily criticizing it, because who knows what
that means. We've seen so many core key members of
this run depart and it hasn't even mattered remotely in
the grand scheme of things.
Speaker 3 (48:45):
I hate to say that. What you should say, because
it's all true. Of the difference is there are those
guys are all gone. But when you say those points
in time, they weren't all gone because the next guy
had to still leave in the next game. They all
those guys are already going.
Speaker 4 (48:57):
But when you say it that way, in a way,
it almost makes it feel like you're not giving them
the proper respect for what they contributed before they left.
Speaker 3 (49:05):
And that's not obviously the case. And you almost got
a glimpse of that. I wonder if they truly believe it.
I wouldn't, but they might. You've got a glimpse of
what life would be like without Kyle Tucker. And for
no good reason. It was basically the best offensive stretch
of their season, and there's really no good reason for it,
because teams could attack them a different way. You were
(49:26):
really limped into games with no left handed bats because
I mean, you had the two best left handed batters
in baseball on your team in the lineup every day.
It's a huge loss. And obviously they won a bunch
of games while he was out, it happened to coincide
with a lot of the time that Verlander was out,
you were figuring out the rotation because you had not
so long before that lost Tavier from the rotation, knew
(49:49):
you were now weren't getting Garkidi bag Then you found
out you weren't getting Garcia and mccullors back, and there
they were in the postseason again. But if money's to
be spent in large dollars, and we could add Fromber's
situation into it as well, because he's also heading into
a final arbitration off season, expectation is they're not going
to go into next year with neither of those two
arbitration guys. But if they didn't, that means they've tried
(50:11):
to put players in the system that can almost immediately
help the team. Trading those major league stars Alvarez or
Tucker for current major league stars is pretty difficult. It's
usually not what is in your trade request or return,
but players that should not be far from doing that
are what you need. And if you think you can
(50:31):
put a lineup of Altuve, Alvarez, Diaz Bregman as your
four big hitters starting next year, and then some of
the players you may be able to acquire in some
of these trades are not long after that you just
feel better about sure that they will contribute. You're hoping
Bryce Matthews is one such player. You're hoping Jacob Melton
is one such player. But these are two guys who've
(50:52):
never even swung a major league back before. To say
they're definitely going to be helping you win games immediately,
I'd like to say it's true, but you can't count
on that.
Speaker 4 (51:00):
Well, I can go super hot taking You just got
done talking about seeing a sample of what life was
like without Kyle Tucker. We saw one game what a
sample without Alex Bregman at third base would be. Like,
I'm going where they want overboard, you know, because Shay
Wickham had what ten errors in that game. But in
all seriousness, because there isn't and we talked about this
(51:21):
with Blum before the show a little bit, there's not
anybody out there. So if you don't sign Alex Bregman,
now you don't just have a hole at third and first,
you have massive holes at third and first base.
Speaker 3 (51:33):
Not just about there's nobody out there to replace him
at third, there's really nobody out there at all in
free agency of great significance. There's a few players that
can plug holes, and maybe you get lucky with a
lower level player that explodes and have a great season.
I mean, the Padres probably feel that way a little
bit with Jerks and Profar, but this free agent crop
of non pitchers is quite poor, to say the least.
(51:55):
And the player you want the most is your guy,
and it would be awesome, obviously if he on a
common ground with this team and was locked in for
a number of years. The Altuve extension is pretty massive,
five years, one hundred and twenty five million. His salaries
are high over the next three years, and then they
tail off in the final two years of that deal.
I don't know that you'd be able to do that
(52:16):
with a younger player like Bregman, even though the production
is probably going to tail off, and I'm sure al
Tuoves will also. You just got to get a little
bit creative with it. Got to figure out the best
way to do it. I have to hope that the
fact that you are handing him a major league baseball
contract for multiple hundred millions of dollars in the state
of Texas will matter to him because it is more
(52:36):
money even if the numbers com tax arguments, but we
do it every year, well, tax arguments. For somebody who's
debating whether I should take a fifty thousand dollars contract
from ex corporation in Texas or a forty nine thousand
dollars contract from ex corporation somewhere else for fifty seven thousand,
it's not a big difference. When you're talking about one
hundred and eighty or two hundred and twenty five million,
(52:58):
it's an enormous difference, absolutely enormous difference, and so that
certainly could pay. You also have an agent that part
of his job is to get his client the best
deal possible. Part of his job is kind of for
the union in general. Like Boris wants all this money,
he wants to make his clients all this money, But
people who aren't even his clients want the players in
(53:19):
free agency to get the biggest possible deals. So then
when they hit free agency, they have a new benchmark
to reach it, you know, getting players signed for less
than market value, even if it's an awesome deal, it's
not that something that anybody's after. They're always trying to
break that new number. Hit this new figure, and I'm
sure he had some of that in mind when he
helped Matt Chapman finalize the deal with the Giants. I mean,
(53:41):
I don't think it matters a whole lot personally to
Bregman and to Boris, because we already knew. You know,
that kind of deal wouldn't get it done. Every team
who wants to put a deal in front of Bregman
knows that that's not going to get it done, So
you just have it out there. He's not trying to
beat that. It's going to be irrelevant to him. By
the time his deal is announced with whatever team it is,
he'll blow it out of the water.
Speaker 4 (54:01):
I'm not Yeah, I'm just worried about some random or
maybe some not so random team coming in with just
a stupid deal that starts with a three or in
the high two's that it's just you can't it's impossible
to compete with because of the way Jim Crane does things,
and it might just.
Speaker 3 (54:20):
Be impossible for the player to say no, Well you
can if you don't want to be with this team,
you might not want to be in that city. It's
it becomes very hard to say no when if and
when a figure like that, a contract like that is
a cent your way.
Speaker 5 (54:34):
You can prevent it.
Speaker 3 (54:35):
Just sign them before free agency. But again that's not
that easy to do. A lot of other things to
talk about. We clearly have not shifted too far away
from the Astros. We will do that as we continue
here on the.

commercials on television and you've certainly heard us talk about
them for years now. When you visit Kushata, make sure,
by the way, that on top of everything else they
have to offer, you stop by the ressports book watching
(55:11):
wager on all the games. This is the best time
of year to do it. The NBA is about to start,
NFL's in full swing. Of course, you know about Major
League Baseball's postseason wager on all the games with over
forty giant TVs. Eighteen betting kiosks and lounge bar seating.
Speaker 3 (55:26):
It's awesome stuff. Heck, the NHL's on day two of
their regular seas. You can watch your wager all the
games right there in the Ressports book. Definitely want to

Clinton and Adam Wekesler, The A Team continues on Sports
Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (56:10):
Back here on the A Team. It is Wednesday. That
means it truly is the beginning of game week, especially
for the teams to play on Sunday and Monday. It's
the day to get to your game. For the team
that's on the road for Thursday Night football in the NFL,
we can get into that a little bit. Texans are
not going to be at home this week, but they
are going to be on a flight Saturday to New England.
Sake on the New England Patriots was officially announced by
(56:33):
girod Mayo, the head coach of the Patriots, that Drake
may will start. So we can get into that conversation
quite clearly. But to where he knew that, now he
has spoken on it. Now may has spoken on it.
Texans where us a little bit about that. Although I
appreciated the way that Tamiko Ryans responded to questions about
preparing for a guy who basically hasn't played, he said,
I don't care. We do what we need to do.
(56:54):
We handle it on our end. It's about our defense,
not about them, and I think that will probably be true,
especially for what they do. I was over at practice
earlier today, first practice of the week, and there weren't
too many surprises. There was one Kamari Laster not practicing today,
and really no definitive word on kind of status because
(57:14):
they don't get into status. I'm aware of what the
injury is. There's no telling from a like I said,
a status standpoint on where things might stand with him.
But yes, we do have the official injury report for
the day. Very easy for me, based on when I
arrived before practice to know that Joe Mixon would not
be practicing today, and then when we got out on
(57:34):
the field with them. He was not out there, so
another Drey without him was also easy to know once
we got out there. Damian Pierce did practice. They do
list him as limited, which is expected as he's trying
to make his way back from injury. Demiko also seemed
very clear about his status for the game. He's going
to play. Barring any setback today tomorrow or during a
walkthrough on Friday. He will be back to go with
(57:58):
cam Akers and Darawally as they get into this game.
They didn't have either tackle out there today, but it
also was not very surprising. Laramie Tunsel has not practiced
in full three days in the week for now a
couple of weeks, and then he'll go out there on
game day and he should be fine an ankle injury
listed for him. Titus Howard obviously missed the game on Sunday,
(58:19):
and Blake Fisher took every single snap that was due
to a hamstring injury for Howard. So that is clearly
much more concerning that you might be heading into a
second consecutive game where Titus Howard is not out there,
and you know, by the way things stand here on
a Wednesday, it'd be Thursday's usually a little bit more
telling for how players might be available to come Sunday,
so we'll see what happens with those players. Derek Barnett
(58:41):
missed last week's game with a shoulder injury. He has
not returned to practice. Jimmy Ward left Sunday's game multiple times,
ultimately leaving for good with a groin injury, and he
did not practice today. They did sign Kadar Holman to
the active roster prior to today's first practice of the week.
So with the Lasser injury and the War injury, that's
probably an indicator of trying to at least be safe
(59:05):
if nothing else, and those are probably the biggest injury concerns.
I'll tell you Stefon Diggs practice on a limited basis.
He was practicing in what would appear to be full
while the media portion of practice was going on, and
then obviously they want to be accurate. So he's listed
is limited, but it's only due to rest. He will
be fine on Sunday and be counted on along with
(59:26):
Tank Dell Xavier Hutchinson most likely as your top three
snap count wide receivers against the Patriots. I just don't
want last week.
Speaker 4 (59:37):
Yeah, I just got done, you know, waxing poetic about
the corners and how I wouldn't want to be throwing
a rookie against either them or that pass rush. And
now we're getting worried that this is a serious injury
that could actually keep Lasseter out of the game. And
I just feel like it's I'm not saying there's momentum
building for the Patriots.
Speaker 3 (59:57):
I know there's no. The only momentum that's built is
they're looking forward. They're not playing a quarterback that can't
move the football through the air. I mean literally, they
have the worst pass offense in the league. There's a
number of different metrics about how their pass protection has
been bad, but it's even worse because he brings more
pressure because he's so unthreatening. He won't get rid of
the football. All he's trying to do is not turn
(01:00:18):
it over. That part's worked, but they can't move the football.
So they're moving forward with a new quarterback. He's going
to be in the exact same position Texans d line
again without Barnett. Will Anderson Junior is seventh in the
NFL according to Next Gen Stats and pressures. He's looking
up at a few players. Obviously, one of them his
teammate Daniel Hunter. He's first in the NFL in quarterback
(01:00:40):
pressures with twenty nine through five weeks. They're going to
add to that total, I think, by quite a few
against Drake.
Speaker 4 (01:00:47):
May seventy five percent of the Texans. You know, the
Texans at seventy five percent, I guess I should say,
to be more clear, not seventy five percent the roster.
The Texans at seventy five percent should still have no
problems whatsoever beating New England, even on the road. I
really feel that way because as long as you have CJ. Stroud,
(01:01:08):
I just I just think it's a lopsided matchup. And
I know that Ross and Matt were talking about this.
It's not like the number moved when you found out
Nico Collins was going on IR. Even though Nico Collins
going on IR is a big, big problem moving forward
after this week.
Speaker 3 (01:01:25):
Yeah it is, but they also had seven points in
last week's game with him on the field, and they
scored another sixteen points with him off the field.
Speaker 4 (01:01:32):
Right, It's just yes, yeah, no's that's a fact. But
I do feel like when the first handful of games
of the season and CJ wasn't throwing for over three
hundred yards and you were squeaking out when which you
squeaked out wins in all these games, correct, when that
was all happening, though, he was the one constant. You know,
(01:01:54):
Diggs would have a catcher two here or there, but
it was like Nico was eating every single game, no
matter what was happening, and just knowing that he's not
going to be out there to start this contest and
the next three after that. It's it's going to be
interesting to see how Stefon Diggs in companies step up.
I know that sounds insane. It's Stefon Diggs. You should
(01:02:16):
be like, oh, well great, because that's exactly what happened.
When Nico left the game on Sunday, Stefan Diggs started
to go off.
Speaker 3 (01:02:23):
I mean, to me, I don't. I don't even think
it's that. It's it's more about, you know, he's not
He's really to me, not gonna do anything differently, Stefan.
It's a matter of is this the guy that the
plays kind of designed to look at. He's not taking
over Nico's spot on the field. He's not gonna run
those routes. He's not gonna beat anybody. They differents like
Nico has already done twice this year. He's actually taken
(01:02:45):
Tank's spot to a certain extent, and I think this
is maybe where Tank has an opportunity to be the
guy that is actually working all across the field. It's
what he's done before here with the Texans, and they
don't have a small amount of experience of CJ Stretch
throwing the football to a Nico Collins less outfit. When
they played Cincinnati last season and scored thirty points, and
(01:03:08):
he threw for well over three hundred yards, three hundred
and fifty six yards that day, Noah Brown was the
player that stepped up. He had one hundred and seventy
two yards that day. That's what you had to have
last year. We went through it for about twelve weeks
last year. Which of their top four receivers is unavailable today?
It was Woods for a couple of weeks, it was
Dell obviously all the rest of the season after his
(01:03:29):
broken leg, it was Noah Brown at times, it was
Nico Collins at times. They always had somebody else ready
to fill whatever gap was there, and Brown had two
monster games. This was one of them. But you're gonna
to me it's if they block well and they're not
facing a very good pass rush, If they run the
ball at least as well as they have the last
(01:03:50):
two weeks, I hope a little bit better, especially with
three guys you can have on the field with Pierce's return,
I don't think CJ. Stroud is gonna have trouble. I
don't think this off is going to have trouble. I'm
not calling for a thirty six point game or anything,
but they're gonna be able to move the ball. He's
gonna have another good day. They're gonna complete passes to
move the chains. They keep the other team off the
(01:04:11):
field as well as any other team in the league
other than one their second time of possession this year,
that's probably gonna be more of the same. And we
haven't even gotten to the fact that Drake May is
facing a defense that just about every analyst thinks, well,
we already know you can't pass protect, we already know
your offensive line is terrible. Of I mean, maybe there's
three or four other teams that would be worse to
(01:04:32):
start your NFL career against. And I know he's played
a little bit, but you're sending him out there against
the Texans and Demiico Ryans and one of the top
ten in pressures, one of the top ten in sack percentage.
I mean, go ahead, by all means, see how that
works out.
Speaker 4 (01:04:45):
I would be shocked if the Texans don't win the
turnover battle on Sunday. I know that's been that.
Speaker 3 (01:04:51):
Means they have to get one. I know they haven't
done that since the Chicago game in Week two.
Speaker 4 (01:04:55):
But isn't it. But who were they playing that night?
A rookie quarterback. I just feel like and he was
way more slippery than I.
Speaker 3 (01:05:01):
Think Drake mays him almost fifty percent of the time.
And I think we'll see a little bit of that
extended blitz packaging this weekend as well.
Speaker 4 (01:05:10):
He took an absolute beating in that game to Caleb Willings,
and yet I still came away. I walked away and
was down very close to the field to watch that
in person, more so than if I had watched it
on TV.
Speaker 3 (01:05:20):
Thinking, man, that kid's tough or stuck up on the
eighth floor with me.
Speaker 4 (01:05:24):
Well, I did think about how far up you were
when I was down there wide, I was like, well,
this is different. I wish all media could watch it
from this vantage point. But you can just go get
yourself some tickets.
Speaker 3 (01:05:33):
I don't want to do that. Joy some SuDS and
have some food.
Speaker 4 (01:05:35):
I don't want to ever pay for another sporting event
that I attend the rest of my life.
Speaker 3 (01:05:40):
This is just where I'm at now. I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (01:05:42):
That is such a first world, snobby, elitist thing to say.
Speaker 3 (01:05:45):
Look at me.
Speaker 4 (01:05:46):
Well, I didn't say that. I just said I don't
want to pay for it. Look, I know too much
about how the sausage is made. And you know what,
I think anybody that has been paying for tickets their
whole life, the older they get, the more they get.
That way, it's anybody you put your priorities with your
money and vice versa. So but no, I just he
took a beating that night, and I came away with
(01:06:09):
respect for that kid because he's still out there trying
to make plays and fighting through it. But again, like
I said, he has the ability to do that. He's slippery.
Drake mays like, whatever's the opposite of slippery? I don't
know what that word is, but that's what he is.
So I look for the Texans to make it a
very very long Sunday afternoon for him this weekend when
(01:06:30):
they get together, and I think the Texans will be
five and one when all of a sudden done, and
then you're really gonna find out about how much they
miss Nico Collins and or Joe Mixon.
Speaker 3 (01:06:39):
That's the thing.
Speaker 4 (01:06:40):
This absolutely needs to be the last week that they
don't have Joe Mixon in the backfield.
Speaker 3 (01:06:45):
We shall see and we shall continue to discuss.

Speaker 1 (01:08:05):
What are you hearing out there now? The Salsbury's takeout
shells burs takeout on the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 6 (01:08:14):
I had to cut a production guy there for a second.
Sorry about that, all right. So obviously Sean and Brian
every single morning, believe it, it's about seven fifteen is
when they do this and topic thrownouts and you guys
just riff on this. Now, this is actually something that
ac I think you were Party two Blummer was. I
(01:08:36):
threw this out in the bullpen. The Dodgers season very
easily could end tonight. That's not what it is, God
willing hopefully, yes, But if that happens, you have to
believe that the fan base everybody there is going to
be saying show Hay is not enough, Mookie's not enough,
Freddie's not enough, Tyler Glass now is not enough. I
(01:08:58):
mean you kind of get where I'm going here, and
the topic here in Astros fans don't get mad at me.
The Dodgers could really use Alex Bregman.
Speaker 3 (01:09:07):
Well, they're already mad at you. There's no question that
that's a team because of who they are. It could
certainly end up that way, but I would at least
put one thing out there. All those guys you said
aren't enough, So clearly, if they lose and they feel
that way, they need to add something. They're already guaranteed,
barring injury, to add one really good starting pitcher. His
(01:09:30):
name is Shoheo Tani. So that's something to consider for
next year's Dodgers. It would have helped this year's Dodgers.
And that's the thing. What I already ran through this
What was their biggest biggest problem this year wasn't their roster,
even though like the Yankees' top heavy offensive team, this
team is super top heavy offensively. Will Smith's pretty good,
(01:09:51):
even have a great year, and they've already extended him.
But you know, your one, two, three, four is pretty good.
And Max Munsey missed part of the year. When he
came back, he was fine. They added to Oscar Hernandez.
He drove in a bunch of runs. The reality is
they don't. They don't have to go get anything offensively,
and they still have gaps shortstops. Clearly a concern. There's concerns,
(01:10:12):
but they're spending so much money on pitching. It has
to pay off. They have so much money invested in
their pitching staff where they're getting nothing from it. Glass
now is gonna throw zero innings here in the postseason,
Kershaw zero innings. The few innings they got from Bueller
aren't weren't very good. And Yamamodo comes over for more
than one hundred million. He missed almost the rangers of them,
(01:10:33):
but he came back and he pitched. I mean, there's
only so much they can do with who's already there
and already going to be there, and Kershaw may not
be one of those guys. It was just a one
year deal for him. I don't expect that. That would
definitely surprise me. And then there's the other elements of it.
This is out from a National League standpoint. They were
(01:10:54):
the loudest and scummiest when it came to the Astros
Yea and Alex Bregman, and was al tuve because of
their presence. Here are the ones who've heard it on
that roster's well, Joe Kelly didn't. Is currently being paid
by the Dodgers, but he's being paid not to pitch
in this series for one season. Is contract get paid
to pitch in any future series. So that lends me
(01:11:16):
to believe even though they gave him a contract, and
a big one, for who he is and what he's
capable of, I have a feeling he and Alex Bregman
will not be sharing a clubhouse next year, especially in
the Joe's an unrestricted free agent after his twenty twenty.
Speaker 4 (01:11:35):
Four So the only redeeming quality about that scenario or
Alex leaving to go to the Bronx would be watching
those hypocrisy laden scumbags have to cheer for this guy
after they booed him lustily every single time he was
in their stadium and on Twitter and everything else that
(01:11:56):
they've done just to make them eat those words. That's
the interesting thing. George Springer went to the.
Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
Blue Jays, He left the country.
Speaker 4 (01:12:04):
Carlos Carreo basically left the country too, He went to Minnesota.
Like those teams don't matter, and they definitely didn't matter
when this happened.
Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
I mean and he was pursued and agreed to deals
with two other teams, both of whom fit in that
same boat good good baseball place two National League teams.
I just uh, I doubt it happens.
Speaker 4 (01:12:28):
But the cynic, the nefarious, the just dark evil side
of me kind of would like to see just that
aspect have to play out.
Speaker 3 (01:12:39):
Plus, if he's in the National League, he can't hurt you.
What's what's the question you would ask? Seriously, I'm asking
a serious question. I'm expecting a serious response. What would
be asked at Alex Bregman's press conference that relates to
Astro's Dodgers sign Stalley, et cetera. How do you feel
like you're going to fit into this clubhouse with all
two people who are part of it, thing like news
(01:13:00):
most involved with sign stealing, that's going to be in
their clubhouse? That matters? Is Mookie right?
Speaker 4 (01:13:05):
And not for the reasons you're all thinking no longer
can sponsor Apple Watches.
Speaker 3 (01:13:09):
I just but Kershell is not going to be on
the team next year. I don't believe we just ran
through Joe Kelly, not Rangers, which would be so Rangers
of them. Freddie Freeman played the Astros in the postseason
and well beat them. He played what was left of
the Astros that year. I don't I mean, your question
probably is valid and it is very simple, how would
you fit in?
Speaker 4 (01:13:29):
But Dave Roberts has more of a skin in the
game than that, for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:13:33):
He's one of the people who definitely was. But it's theirs,
that's the question. It's the fans. How do you expect
How would you want the fans to react to you
coming to this team after what they would probably be
phrased this way, after what they endured because of your
team endured endured.
Speaker 4 (01:13:53):
Their team was doing the same thing in both locations.
Speaker 3 (01:13:56):
By the way, it was the bi coastal cheating. How
about if he answers that way.
Speaker 5 (01:14:00):
He should, you know what?
Speaker 3 (01:14:01):
And by the way, I didn't mean my apology.
Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
They made me do it.
Speaker 3 (01:14:05):
I was being nice calling Dave Roberts a cheater at
his introductory dress.
Speaker 4 (01:14:09):
Come like, if you don't think Alex Bregman Dodgers or
Yankees jerseys would fly off the shelves. By the way,
what numbers here wearing in the Yankee stadium? He can't
wear two?
Speaker 3 (01:14:21):
He can? I mean, he could probably ask for it.
I mean, Daniel Hunter could have asked JJ Watt if
he could have how about this, he goes.
Speaker 4 (01:14:28):
To Yankee Stadium to play for the Yankees, he asks
for number two and I'm going back to shortstop.
Speaker 3 (01:14:35):
I would love that.
Speaker 4 (01:14:36):
And all of those fans would fall all over themselves
to root for this guy, because it would take them
about one millisecond to realize what an absolute.
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
Badass he is on and off the field. Not something
everybody wants to think about, but it is the reality. Boston, Philly,
Chicago teams with massive A roles that want to spend
even more have the ability to spend more. I do
think they will all at least be a part of
of Scott Boris's phone calling tree.
Speaker 4 (01:15:02):
By the way, Trace says, imagine Dodger fan with Alex
Bregman's slow start.
Speaker 3 (01:15:07):
I love that. That's very the baseball ang on the brand. Yeah,
actual baseball. If I were to guess, I'm gonna guess
he would wear twenty two if he was a Yank.
Just double up on his number. I mean, the single
digits are out of the question. Clem number tired. Clemens
as a Yankee means what I mean, he was a champion. There,
(01:15:30):
I mean he threw it Mike Piazza. There By that
I mean a shard of a baseball bat. I don't
think Clemens wearing number twenty two and Yankee lore goes
down with much fanfare.
Speaker 4 (01:15:39):
Roger Clemens is in George Steinbrenner's box. That was a
great moment in Yankee's history. We will continue and wrap
up the four o'clock hour.
Speaker 1 (01:15:48):
Next the A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 8 (01:15:54):
Adam Clinton at Adam Wentford, the eight team.
Speaker 5 (01:16:05):
Let's play a game.
Speaker 4 (01:16:07):
Okay, segment, Let's play a game called which rookie quarterback
gets his brain scram.
Speaker 3 (01:16:16):
I shouldn't say that. Let me rephrase it.
Speaker 4 (01:16:18):
Which rookie quarterback has a more rough weekend this weekend?
Speaker 3 (01:16:23):
Okay? Obviously we know about Drake May May starting against
the Texan Sunday at noon at home Foxborough or Option
B Spencer Rattler Spencer Rattler at home for Todd Bowles
defense and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. David Carr's brother was
(01:16:45):
hurt in their Monday night game. If you saw the play,
you probably didn't realize it. Then I know I didn't.
He got sacked on the play. And it looked like
he hurt his hip his back the way he went down,
and he described it afterwards, he said he was actually hurt.
Sounds like he needs QC kinetics, definitely does. He was
hurt before he went down. He heard his oblique. It
(01:17:05):
was just the manner in which he had twisted before
he took the hit. And then he walked off the
field and went back into the locker room to get
looked at. And he's obviously going to miss some time.
I mean, you can limit it to them because it's
their first ever start in Rattler's first ever time on
the field. Caleb Williams is starting this weekend again as
a quarterback of a winning team. They're three and two
(01:17:29):
and they're home for Jacksonville, so of course home for Jacksonville.
It's relative home there in London, but they are favored
to get to four and two. The Washington Commanders rookie quarterback,
they're four and one. He's good. They have to go
very far for their road game because they're on the
road at the Ravens. I'd like to include them, and
(01:17:51):
obviously should also note the other rookie quarterback that is
starting and also putting out very good Ferris Bue themed
videos on a social media bon Nix bo Nix's home
for Jim Harbaugh's team. The Chargers off their bye week
and they're favored to beat bon Nix's team.
Speaker 4 (01:18:12):
What's closer Washington, d C? To Baltimore or the Texans
road trip to Arlington later this year?
Speaker 3 (01:18:21):
Oh, I believe it's the two DC area teams because
there's just no everything there's closer. So I'll expand to
those five to making their starting debuts and the other
three continuing rookie starters only because one of those other matchups.
It is something I think could see bad results essentially.
(01:18:41):
You know, I actually think it's gonna be may as
much as I wanted to say it the way that
everyone wants to, why.
Speaker 4 (01:18:48):
Haven't you sung it? But I won't justin and get
a perm while you're at it.
Speaker 3 (01:18:53):
All these pressures, all this, we don't give up a
lot of yards. Texas are in the top five and
fewest yards allowed. They're in the top three, I think
top two actually, and fewest passing yards allowed. We talked
about their pressures, We talked about their sack percentage. Their
offense has had the ball so much. I believe they've
faced fewer plays as a defense than anybody in the
(01:19:14):
NFL this year. They're going to get home Ten different
Texans have a sack this year through five games. That's
pretty much unheard of, but nobody has three sacks. That's
probably gonna change. I think this is the week if
Hunter and Anderson take their usual number of snaps, no injury,
no reason to keep them off the field. I think
(01:19:36):
that they're going to see the results that we just
haven't seen. Bone crushing sacks, a sack, fumble ball flutters
out of May's hand because he's getting hit as he
throws it. These are the things that it kind of
seems like it's a perfect lead up to this wish
why a lot of people are wondering if this was
really the good week for Mayo to make the decision
(01:19:56):
to move on to Drake may because of who they're
facing it and I don't want to paint a picture
of the Texans have an overwhelming you can't stop them
pass rush, but they certainly have the makings of this
is not going to be a very good day for him.
If everybody else is healthy, it makes it even harder.
If Laster is back out there on the opposite side
of Derrek Stingley Junior. I do think that you still
(01:20:17):
can play perfectly fine with or without Jimmy Ward. And
I don't mean he's not a good player, but they've
now the last two weeks have played more plays without
him than with him, and I think they've shown to
be very capable with Murray and Bullock getting all of
those snaps. Henry Toatoa and what should be a more
physically fit as he's el Shaier after losing ten pounds
(01:20:39):
in the forty eight hours before Sunday's game and then
he turned in the game that he did. I think
he'll be a little bit better physically equipped to be
a bigger probably be a bigger part of their runstop
game and getting out for the quarterback because it doesn't
have to spy the quarterback. He doesn't have to be
the guy that chases down Josh Allen like he did
a week ago, because I don't think you're going to
(01:20:59):
be chase down Drake may.
Speaker 4 (01:21:02):
I got a comment about the Texans as it pertains
the injuries because this is obviously why this is happening,
that I thought was comical, just especially because it's really
it's not. It seems ignorant. I guess if you're still
looking at Nico Collins as injury prone, I mean, he's
(01:21:24):
this is what year four for him?
Speaker 3 (01:21:25):
You're four?
Speaker 4 (01:21:27):
He was hurt parts of the first two years yep,
and then he played fifteen games plus playoffs last year.
Speaker 3 (01:21:32):
Yeah, seventeen games played, miss two.
Speaker 4 (01:21:35):
Because somebody responded to my tweet which was highlighted on
the show earlier by Blummer about what would happen to you,
you know, theoretically, uh to kind of compare to the
news that he was going on the IR for four games.
If you didn't think Nico Collins was going to miss
some games this year due to injury, then you haven't
been watching Texans football. Well, he wasn't really hurt last year.
(01:21:56):
I mean he missed a couple of games, I guess.
Speaker 3 (01:21:58):
I mean missing games is it's all relative to how
you want to assess injury prone or what happened. You know,
missing time is missing time. I wouldn't be too concerned
if my one of my four or five best players
played fifteen out of seventeen games. That on the way
things are that that's not the end of the Worldloffs
plus playoffs because they were keen of the seventeen games,
so they were able to get out there and playing
(01:22:18):
a full season now is seventeen games. It has been
for his entire career. He's yet to play sixteen games
in a season. Clearly he's yet to play seventeen. This
year will be no different. But I think a lot
can be said for learning about what he did last year,
how often he got the ball, which meant how often
he got hit, which meant how well conditioned he needed
to be. And I think he spent I know he
(01:22:40):
spent a lot of time because we've talked about it
with him on trying to prevent what has happened the
first three years, or really even what happened last year
from happening again. I'm not sure what injuries you want
to talk about. There's nothing like is Tyreek Hill going
to hurt his hamstring? Is DeVante Adams going to hurt
his hamstring? You name a receiver, aren't they all going
to do that?
Speaker 4 (01:23:00):
Johnson, I'll never forget. I think it was against Pittsburgh.
Just somebody shot him. That's what it looks like when
you go down with no contact. Me Nico didn't look
like that.
Speaker 3 (01:23:09):
He finished the play man only barely pulled up late
in the going. That was why I saw it, But
it wasn't overwhelming. Maybe that has people like, ah, I
can't believe you went to ir Well, that's me because
I was when I saw it. And again we're playing
doctors in our chairs. Basically, Well, that doesn't look too bad.
I mean, yeah, he pulled up lamee, but it's probably
just a slight tweak. He'll be out there after a week.
Blah blah blah blah blah. No, four games. Well, you
(01:23:32):
twist your ankle and it's not because someone illegally tackled
you and you wear twenty eight. Well, so then you
try to play through the pain, or you get a shot,
or you get it super taped, or you get it retaped.
You hurt your hamstring, Okay, then what what are you
gonna do? You will re injure it. There's nothing. You
can't make it healthy. You kills me, wrap it tighter exactly.
Those are the things you can't do with that particular
(01:23:54):
injury to try to play through it, because the moment
you have to accelerate, the moment you have to put
your foot in the grind, potentially depending on the nature
of that tear, tear, strained pull. You're playing with fire.
You have to give it time. This is an injury
that requires time, and they're giving it.
Speaker 4 (01:24:09):
I don't believe anybody has said grade two. I don't
think anybody has attached that to this, even though I
think that's what this could be, because that.
Speaker 3 (01:24:16):
Means it's a tear. Nobody will say that, but that's
what it is. If he's done nothing about what he did.
Look like a tear. Didn't look like a tear when
he finished the play, didn't look like a tear when
he was with his teammates in the end zone. Didn't
look like a tear when he walked back to get
in the tent. Didn't look like a tear when he
walked back to the lockero. I'm just glad they're not late.
Didn't look like a tear when he was on the sidelines.
Speaker 4 (01:24:35):
I'm just glad they're not labeling it as discomfort. I
just want to say that I'm very happy about that.
All right, Plenty more football when we come back, because
you know what time it is, it's time for football.
Speaker 3 (01:24:45):
At five to start the third and final hour.
Speaker 1 (01:24:46):
Next the eight on Sports Talk seven ninety two lifelong
Houston sports guys named at him talking your teams, Adam
Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A team A.
Speaker 7 (01:25:08):
Team football at five?
Speaker 4 (01:25:18):
Conversation underway here on Sports Talk seven ninety has been
a lot of uh. I mean, let's face it, it's
easy to talk about the Texans on a daylight today
where not only do you find out that they're going
to be without their best receiver and the NFL's best receiver,
I might add through the first five weeks of the season,
but you got to find out what you actually will
have out there. You mentioned all of the names on
(01:25:41):
the injury list today.
Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
Who layers didn't practice.
Speaker 4 (01:25:45):
Yeah, but you know what, when you hear of guys
that aren't practicing on Wednesday versus Thursday, it matters.
Speaker 3 (01:25:51):
But it's who they are and what the ailments are.
Speaker 4 (01:25:54):
I think you've actually said earlier during the show you'd
probably guess Joe Mixon doesn't play this week, but it
might be the last week. I'm like, when do we
start getting that idea?
Speaker 3 (01:26:07):
Probably never, Because the way Jamik o'ryans handles injuries publicly,
he almost no comments it, but he literally answers your
question without an answer to the question that you've asked
because he just doesn't want to discuss it. And any
coach can decide to go that route if he wants,
and he has. He did that last year too. But
it seems likely, and I mentioned this last week, there's
(01:26:28):
been a setback. There's been a reason why this has
taken this long. You know, he got hurt in week two.
You're about to play your game in week six, so
this is going to be his fourth straight miss game.
You know what your i AR stint has to be
if you go on it four games. You know who's
practiced previously and then stopped practicing after Joe Mixon. Joe
Mixon was on the practice field last week, not for
(01:26:48):
all three days and not for very long. But then
he wasn't on the practice field following that. Now he
hasn't been on the practice field. I did see him
on the sidelines again. It's very difficult to tell exactly
what's going on. Even though it's a leg injury, it's
an ankle injury from the illegal tackle that was not flagged.
Doesn't change how he's hurt. But be nice if you'd
give players an actual in game deterrent for tackling players
(01:27:13):
how you're not supposed to. It would also hurt your team.
It might also make your coach mad because you've been
hit with a fifteen yard penalty. Again, doesn't change the
fact that the players getting hurt, but I think it
might change how often it might happen. And I don't
think it's happened a ton this year, but unfortunately it
happened to a Texans player, very very important Texans player.
You're gonna talk about this week, the drop off between
(01:27:35):
having Nico Collins and not having Nico Collins. You know,
Diggs and Dell will still be on the field quite
a bit, but now who's really stepping into those available reps?
And it was Xavier Hutchinson a week ago, and it
almost assuredly will be him again. He's really helpful in
the past game, even when he's not being thrown the ball.
He's regarded as a good blocker, someone who really understands
(01:27:55):
what his role is, and that's probably the guy who
moves into it. We've been talking about what do they
look like when they're moving on from mixing. It's a
one player position, so it literally, you are replacing him,
like Xavier Hutchinson's not replacing Nico Nora's digs. No as
Dell Nor's Dell Nor, as Schultz, nor a is anybody
who's catching pass. It's not a one player position. Quarterback
and running back, hunter, kicker. They're also one player positions.
(01:28:19):
And we've seen it. When Kaymi Fairbairn was missing last year,
it mattered because Matt Ammandola could only kick the ball
one yard shorter than he needed to, so it went
off the crossbar and did not go in this year,
he's one Player of the Week, Special Teams Player of
the Week twice in five weeks. Forty percent of these
(01:28:40):
Special Teams awards for the AFC have been handed to
Kaymi fairbear But a one person position, if Joe's not
out there, you have to hand the ball to Dara,
you have to hand the ball to Cam. I think
we Demiko said today, you're definitely handing the ball or
having at your disposal to hand the ball. Damien Pierce,
they're not him, They're never gonna be him. You gotta
figure you're out a different way to run. You're calling
(01:29:02):
plays that you might not necessarily calls often for these
guys versus him, it is. It's to me, it's actually
a bigger drop off. I don't know if you agree
or disagree having Joe Mixon out there versus what your
options are when he's not it's already having Nico Collins. Well,
we don't necessarily know. This year, we saw the majority
of Sunday's game without Nico, and I referenced the game
(01:29:23):
last year he missed two games. I referenced one of them,
the game against Cincinnati where you still scored thirty and
still had three hundred and fifty six yards passing from c. J. Stroud.
You also had Noah Brown to step in. You don't
have him this year to do so. But that's just
my personal opinion that I think the drop off is
larger at running back than it will show to be
(01:29:44):
at wide receiver, even though Nico is the best player
at his position in the league. Yeah, but you you don't.
I mean, you just don't have the other option. And
I get it. It's a different position, it's a different task.
Speaker 4 (01:29:55):
It's a different ask of that player with what you're
wanting them to do in this offense, in the confines
of this offense.
Speaker 3 (01:30:03):
But you just don't have.
Speaker 4 (01:30:05):
The type of similar weapons, like you just got done
kind of describing the way you do Stefan Diggs, Like
if Nico Collins goes down for four games last year,
it's completely different than this year because Stefan Diggs doesn't
exist here in Houston.
Speaker 3 (01:30:22):
True, and Tank Dell's already hurt. I'm just kidding that
Noah Brown's game last year, yeah, is better than any
game Steph Diggs is probably gonna have this year. Yeah.
That's catches for one hundred and seventy two yards. And
if you recall when they won the game, it was
because of his play. Threw the ball to him and
what was probably barely field goal range with last year's
not as kickable footballs, but he broke multiple tackles and
(01:30:46):
carried players further down the field on what would be
their last nap of the game before they kicked the
game winner. Well, but maybe we're going to see that
this week. Who's who is that? Well, because they really
don't have a player like that, they might have a
producer like that.
Speaker 4 (01:31:00):
Well, Steph Diggs is the obvious, But also because of
the fact that I don't think if we're being honest,
with ourselves right now. Tank Dell's one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (01:31:08):
I mean, I think the chest injury is a factor,
if that's what people have forgotten about. He played last week,
but I don't think he was one hundred percent. He
was asked after the game, how you feel? I feel fine,
he smiled. He played forty six snaps of their sixty eight.
Xavier Hutchinson played forty eight, and only nine were taken
by Nico before his injury. I don't think it's going
to be very dissimilar this week. You probably see a
(01:31:28):
little bit more Robert Woods. Robert Woods is still there
for the reasons we see him returning punts and kicks.
Potentially it's because they feel he's sure handed. He's not
going to light the other team up the way Brown
was capable of doing last year. Maybe this you know
you're gonna see a little bit more Mechi Probably. I
don't imagine a scenario where he's not up. And then
you have the question last week, the answer to the
(01:31:49):
question is Stephen Simm's going to be There was no
inactive and not a part of their punt return game.
He's still working with the kick punt or kick returns
he's still working with their kick returners this week. Because
you're now missing Collins definitively. I wonder how that impacts
what they want to do with those spots. But it's
still about CJ. He said the same thing when we
were talking about the five Headed Monster and guys demanding
(01:32:13):
the ball needing. They throw to the guy that's open,
they throw to the play, They go through the play
as it's design, and they have super confidence in the
guys they have out there. I mean, Tank del could
have fifteen targets this week, or Dell could or Digs
could have fourteen targets this week. It kind of depends
how the other team decides to go about it and
what these guys are capable of doing. One thing you're
definitely missing with Nico. It's one of the reasons why
(01:32:35):
his numbers have been so good since the start of
last year. When teams put try to put him in
press coverage, he's been one of the ten best receivers
in creating separation. Guys are like, well, we can't give
him a cushion. Well, then when you try to eliminate that,
he just beats them. That's something they're gonna miss. I
just I don't think.
Speaker 4 (01:32:55):
I mean, it's the best week to have this happen
with I'm talking about with a buffer with Joe Mixon
because I really do feel like, I know you just
got in saying he hasn't said anything. We don't know,
but we're talking about over a month now. By the
time next week at Green Bay rolls around for a
high ankle, Sprain. I know he's a running back. He's
got to cut. All these guys have to cut. But
I just feel like, okay, it's Green Bay. If he
(01:33:18):
can even remotely attempt to go, I figure he'll be
out there because he's not playing this week. If that
is indeed what happens, maybe he'll surprise all this and
he'll be out there in New England.
Speaker 3 (01:33:29):
I doubt, Sprain. Last thing you want is reinjuring it.
I know, because it doesn't you're not having a shorter
time to re recover. You're going to have at least
usually the same amount of time. It could be out
another four weeks. Maybe Damian Pierce will be a pleasant surprise.
I wish we had more of a resume, of a
good resume from him of late. We just don't.
Speaker 4 (01:33:50):
That's the other cold hard truth about the running back position.
Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
Well, the other part is who's creating holes for them? Yeah,
and outside of a week against what has proven to
be a very very bad defense for stopping the run
the Colts, outside of that one week, the offensive line
has not created much from a running lane standpoint. There
have been plenty of plays where as soon as they
get the ball, they better make a cut or they're
going to be met in the backfield. Is what happened
(01:34:14):
to cam Akers, it happened to Dara. I'm sure it
will happen to Damian Pierce though he's used to it.
It was pretty much every running play he had a
year ago. It's also be nice if they were able
to I didn't mention the Kenyan Green did not practice today,
although I don't believe he's gonna be facing missing the game,
but we shall see. Was watching the first unit of
what their offensive line was today and kind of notice
(01:34:35):
that these are guys that you don't normally have out there.
And we're already talking about the front line guys not
handling business running wise that you'd want them to. The
win rates released each week are out again this week
for both edge rushers and defensive tackles and conversely on
the offensive side for interior offensive linemen and tackles from
(01:34:57):
an offensive standpoint in their either pas blocking or run
blocking the offensive line. There's only one player listed on
any of the top tens or twenties for how they've
played this year, and it's as usual, it's Laramie Tunsel.
Among the better tackles from a pass block win rate perspective,
none of them appear on any of the run lists,
(01:35:18):
and nobody else appears on the pass block win rate list,
and that's very indicative of their team numbers, which are
in the bottom ten on both fronts.
Speaker 4 (01:35:27):
The good news, the obvious good news for the Texans,
is that CJ.
Speaker 3 (01:35:31):
Stroud will start at quarterback. And the reason that brings it, Man,
I'm hanging off and throwing short passes before we left.
I think this kid's got a future.
Speaker 4 (01:35:39):
I only say that because there's another new starting quarterback
this week, not of the rookie variety. But get ready
for the Aid and O'Connell era for the Vegas Raiders.
Because he's getting the start against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It
could be worse. You could be talking about Aid and
O'Connell this week.
Speaker 3 (01:35:54):
Well, you had a quarterback battle between him and Minshew,
him and Minshew which Minshew won, right, and now they
have to go to O'Connell. Connell played and started ten
times last year for Vegas they actually split those games.
They'd be thrilled if he performed at least that well
this year. I'm not expecting it.
Speaker 4 (01:36:12):
No, that's again, I am absolutely trying to show the
silver lining. It's a pretty big silver lining.
Speaker 2 (01:36:18):
You have c J.
Speaker 4 (01:36:19):
Stroud starting at quarterback against a rookie on the other
side of the field. So should be a good weekend
for the Texans, regardless.
Speaker 1 (01:36:27):
The A teen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:36:31):
Should be a good weekend for you, unless, of course,
one of the idiot drivers here in Houston runs into
you for whatever reason. Maybe they're just not looking, maybe
they're putting on makeup, maybe they're texting, maybe it's a
drunk driver, but whatever the case, if you've been in
a collision, you want to have somebody that's had the
Houston communities back for over twenty five years. We're talking
(01:36:52):
about Mocrum injury law, and that's how long they've been
doing things the right way. You can count on them
to come out swinging against all of the problems that
a car crash of any kind brings. They always go
the distance to get you the compensation and medical attention
you deserve, so you can focus on taking care of
your family and if it's the case unfortunately, focus on healing.
(01:37:13):
They will come to you at your bedside in the
hospital if it's that bad, but they'll also have you
meet them at their office or come to your home.
Speaker 3 (01:37:21):
Two eight one.
Speaker 4 (01:37:22):
Two two two twenty two twenty two from Roquarum Injury
Law two eight one two two two twenty two twenty.
Speaker 1 (01:37:27):
Two Better than an eighties movie reboots You're not putting
to our eighteen returns now giving out free Mohawks Back
to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler fin Sports Talk seven
ninety so.
Speaker 3 (01:37:50):
In all seriousness, and you know, the Tigers have moved on,
and quite they've moved on from today. They've moved on.
It's over. You don't think that they're actually gonna in
that series, do you? The team that never scores? No,
probably not, not if they don't score, which they haven't done.
But once in this series, one of the three games
I did, I made mention of this earlier. Now it's
(01:38:11):
even a little bit closer to taking place, So I'll
just read it straight from the X platform. Guardians don't
score any runs, don't win. That's a the third division
winner down two to one in the best of five
ds Yankees could make it four tonight. Phillies and Dodgers
try to stay alive today Phillies and Mets currently are
tied nothing nothing in the fourth. The other two division winners,
(01:38:32):
Brewers Astros, were eliminated in the wildcard round. In other words,
I'm leading people down this path as we arrive at
the two championship series that will not have any division
winners in it, potentially, even though there were six of
the twelve playoff teams. Well, if you're Seattle, you can
hang your hat on that. See, at least if you
don't win the division, you've got it. Oh wait, that's right, Um,
(01:38:57):
I don't know it's I guess this is this is
kind of like Baseball's version of the NFL with the
parody is how they're going to try and sell it,
like the Packers going into Dallas and embarrassing them. That's
a wildcard team against a division titleist.
Speaker 4 (01:39:13):
Well, I was just saying anybody having a chance to
win it all on any given year.
Speaker 3 (01:39:17):
But I guess you could say that with that team.
I mean, it's true. What was the what was the
Super Bowl last year? Kansas City and San Francisco, right, yes,
and they were both the number one seeds, right yes,
so that no, that's not true. Kansasity was not a
number one seed lest because well, San Francisco was. The
Lions were two, yeah, okay, and they played in the
(01:39:38):
conference title game.
Speaker 4 (01:39:41):
Ravens were the number one seed. That's right, but they're
never They're never going to.
Speaker 3 (01:39:45):
But the Chiefs were division champs, not a wildcard team.
Speaker 4 (01:39:50):
And similar to the Astros, they came from a crappy division.
Speaker 3 (01:39:54):
You do also, from a pure math perspective, there's seven
teams in the playoff. Eight of them are division winners.
In football, This is half and half.
Speaker 4 (01:40:03):
Divisions still matter in these two sports, though, as opposed
to the NBA, where it's just stupid.
Speaker 3 (01:40:09):
And imagine if the number one seed the Yankees and
the Dodgers, if they receive some sort of additional benefit
like the number one seeds doing football of having to
not play the opening round while everybody else does. Yeah,
the number one seed in the NFL because of the
expanded playoffs to seven teams. To me, it's massive, and
I'm like, I know, all Baltimore had to do was
(01:40:30):
win two home games last year, and that's all any
number one seed has to do. It's all that the
Niners did do to get to the super Bowl. By
being the number one seed, it is humongous. But I
also think we're finding home field advantage in the NFL
playoffs and regular season is starting to have less of
an impact on the outcome of games.
Speaker 4 (01:40:50):
I'm just thinking about, since we're talking about divisions, the
fact that Tonight's Rockets game, yes will be against the
number one seed, Oklahoma City Thunder of the Northwest Division.
What's wrong with that? They're located smack dab in the
middle of the country. Aren't they north and west of Houston?
Speaker 3 (01:41:09):
No? Are they not.
Speaker 4 (01:41:10):
It's pretty close, maybe slightly, it's more north than anything.
I mean, Oklahoma City, I guess, is centrally located in
that state. But because of the geography of where Houston is, yeah,
I guess you could say technically.
Speaker 3 (01:41:23):
Again, as I usually like, it's okay to know that
geography doesn't matter to the people who put divisions together
to a certain extent. But if you're gonna have them,
it's pretty impossible to make all of the teams in
your league correct from a geographical standpoint, they're just many,
only so many combinations. You just can't do it well.
Speaker 4 (01:41:44):
They're throwing them there too, because they're they're from the Northwest,
the Seattle era, which they're giving back. By the way,
hey take no Houston Eulers slash Nashville Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 3 (01:41:57):
It is possible the Browns did it.
Speaker 4 (01:42:00):
They got it back from the Ravens when their owner
was even worse than your owner the way he went
about things. Even he was able to give it back.
But Miss Thumb is never gonna give it back to Houston.
Speaker 3 (01:42:12):
Should be fun tonight from a basketball's perspective, in that
probably see the guys you didn't see a couple of
nights ago. Tari Easton should make his preseason debut, and
for what his season was a year ago, it's a
big deal. Why did he play just because of the
way that they're putting the preparing the team for the season,
I think, and I didn't hear this from them specific
(01:42:32):
I think they're gonna do the same thing next week.
You know, they played two games of three nights this week,
a bunch of days off at home, and then they
got two games and three nights next week. Those games
are all at home. I actually get to come home
and stay home all the way through the first two
games of the regular season. But I think you know, Landell,
Jeff Green, Dylan Brooks, Tar Easton, they were all in
street clothes on Tuesday or on Monday, excuse me. And
(01:42:53):
then I think you'll see four different players or three
different players than street clothes tonight with those guys playing.
Nobody's hurt. He's the only one really truly trying to
return from something that impacted him all the way through
the end of the season. Clearly Alpi was hurt at
the end of last year, but as they told us
on media day, had their season been extended into the postseason,
(01:43:13):
he probably would have been able to return, and that
meant he was able to kind of spend an off
season healthy physically speaking. We saw him during camp a
little bit and then obviously two nights ago on the court.
He looks really, really capable this year. I don't know
about the basketball yet, but I'm happy with where it's going.
Just physically speaking, he looked like a little bit different player.
Speaker 4 (01:43:34):
And this is also evidence of the fourteen man rotation
that emy Udoak is going to have to deal with.
Speaker 3 (01:43:39):
Yeah, don everybody can play putting making players inactive on
a regular basis through the season this way, but you
know they're also going to get a look at something
I think we'll see this year, and that's Amen Thompson
as a starter. Well, not because he can't do really
good things with the second unit, especially if he's running
the second unit as say, the backup point, but I
think he could benefit tremendously and so could the team
(01:44:01):
by having him on the court to begin the game,
both defensively and offensively. Another finisher. I like when Cam
and Jalen are on the court together because they're awesome
finishers for a team that absolutely should be creating turnovers
and running and when you can finish like they do,
and you put those three on the floor to finish
for you on the break. Amen, Cam, who hates rims,
(01:44:21):
it's awesome to see that that hasn't changed. Yeah, although
Walker Kessler probably would have preferred if it had the floor,
it was awesome. So this is something you're gonna see
a whole bunch of this year. I'm sure, I mean,
I am looking forward. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:44:35):
I mean, I have no idea who's playing realistically playing
tonight for the Thunder in a preseason game, but I
you know, the pregame is going to heavily feature the
fact that you know, this okay See team was clearly
thinking they were going to go further than it did
last year Conference finals loss.
Speaker 3 (01:44:57):
Where they were they were the top seed? Were they not?
Or were they number two seed? They were the number
one seed, fifty seven wins. Yeah, Rockets played them as
tough as anybody last year did. SGA newly acquired Alex Caruso,
Lougan thorn in the Rockets side by the way, everywhere
he goes one of the Jalen Williams, the good one,
Jadab and Chet Holmgren. Those are your starters tonight for
the Oklahoma City Thunder. That news has been out forever
(01:45:18):
for a minute.
Speaker 4 (01:45:19):
Well, I just I'm talking about like as as far
as preseason.
Speaker 3 (01:45:23):
Guy can start the game and then he's pulled after
the first quarter. Nine minutes in their game on Monday,
he scored ten points, made all five of his shots.
Who is defending him? No one? Is he Cam Witmore?
That's well Jalen Green scored twenty one points in less
than twenty one minutes.
Speaker 4 (01:45:39):
Yeah, but Cam's like, Oh, I've been out there for
five minutes. I've got twelve points, nine rebounds, five assists,
and two block shots. I mean, he makes the most
of his time better than pretty much anybody in the league.
I think he led the NBA in whatever the rating.
Speaker 3 (01:45:51):
Is, points per minute, Yeah, per thirty six, he was
definitely near the top. Got to see Reed Shepherd for
the first time a couple nights ago, and Fred eventually
sat out the second half.
Speaker 4 (01:46:01):
Are you gonna call him Reed Shepherd's mustache until he
gets rid of it?
Speaker 3 (01:46:04):
What I went with on Monday? And I think I
said it here on the show and I probably won't
continue forever, but I just call him mister mustache. I
saw that in the highlights. Yeah, I mean, because he
could shave it. I'd probably encourage him to do so,
but were not.
Speaker 4 (01:46:20):
But it wasn't there on Draft night, it wasn't there
at Kentucky, So why.
Speaker 3 (01:46:24):
Did NA For much of his off season though? Yeah,
but why the need to do this now? Maybe it
takes us away from his haircut.
Speaker 4 (01:46:30):
Unless your name is Tom Selleck, which he doesn't even
have one anymore.
Speaker 3 (01:46:35):
Hey, hey, read we're gonna do some game promotions. Can
you sit down. It's media day. We need to record
some stuff with you. We're gonna give you some names
and celebrities, and then you try to figure out who
they are, like if you know who they are, Tom Sellick,
he had my silence. Come on ross Sam Elliott, he
has a famous mustache. Do you think he knows who
Sam Elliott is? Well, he's on a I loved him
(01:46:56):
in Roadhouse. He's not gonna say that. He's on a commercial.
It's airing right now on Sporting Events. Yes, with Gronk.
He Reid probably knows who Gronk is. How do you
think Sam Elliott says Gronk? I'd like to hear it.
Why don't you tell us Bronk. It's like the k's
very drawn out. Yes, I hope he gets rid of
(01:47:17):
it soon. And I love the kid. Play ball.
Speaker 4 (01:47:19):
You can look however you want to look, just play ball. Well,
he didn't like okay so offensively. The other night he
was a little out of sorts, looked like it was
his first preseason game in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (01:47:30):
Defensively wreaking havoc. I mean, he can.
Speaker 4 (01:47:34):
Absolutely play on this level, yep, which is a good sign.
And that's I guarantee you. The person who loves that the.
Speaker 3 (01:47:39):
Most is his head coach, no question about it. A
little bit of a step up in competition depending on
who's available. Tonight they played one of the other four
teams that did not make the playoffs out of the
Western Conference last year, the Jazz, who only won thirty
one games last year, and they said, well, if we
can win thirty one games with Lori markin and as
our best player, let's extend him forever for millions. So
looking forward to see what they are in store for
(01:48:00):
the league moving forward. But yes, Oklahoma City a little
bit different. They'll be fighting for the same thing they
went and got last year, a chance to win a title,
number one seed, things like that.
Speaker 4 (01:48:09):
They're healthy again, They'll be right there. Looking forward to
the Jazz. Not mattering yet again as well. Yeah, Rockets
preseason basketball coming up in about an hour and a half,
well sooner than that. From the pregame variety, but we've
got another half hour here on the A team Sports
Talk seven ninety Space City Home Network.
Speaker 1 (01:48:27):
The ad on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:48:32):

Speaker 1 (01:49:37):
Catch every Astros game on Sports Talk.
Speaker 6 (01:49:39):
Seven ninety and iHeartRadio ass home of your Astros.
Speaker 3 (01:49:46):
Back at it here on the eighteen. Another half hour
still to go before we close up shop, and our
final segment coming up in a few will remind you
an opportunity to win a four pack of tickets with
pit passes to Monster Jam coming up later this month
over and RG Stadium. So just stick around, keep listening,
pay attention. Hopefully you already have been and your opportunity
(01:50:06):
comes in the final segment of the show. Here's where
we hit you with the things we have not devoted
enough time to or have not devoted any time to whatsoever,
including jets chatter following the firing of Robert Sala. What
do we have today, Dan, in case you missed it,
all right.
Speaker 6 (01:50:20):
We're gonna get to that in a second. But this
is too good. So we've seen obviously the coverage of
both the Dodgers and the Padres during this NLDS, especially
after the did Manny Machado throw the ball at Dave
Roberts or not. We talked about in game interviews the
other night. Well, Kevin Ac of the San Diego Union
Tribune is reporting that the Padres players and their dugout
(01:50:43):
were approached by Ken Rosenthal.
Speaker 2 (01:50:45):
They told them, get lost.
Speaker 6 (01:50:46):
We're not doing in game interviews with you because of
how you've covered our team.
Speaker 3 (01:50:52):
How has he covered their team? Apparently too negatively?
Speaker 6 (01:50:55):
I was gonna say, I mean, he basically was inferring
that Ornando Tatis Junior was inciting the crowd that also
to profar the same deal, and obviously to how he's
covered the Manny Machado, did he throw the ball at
Dave Roberts whole thing? Like?
Speaker 3 (01:51:10):
I read the Manny Machado article where he dropped a
nickname on him, and I wondered if there was more
to it than that. Manny has history. So it's impossible
to expect anybody covering these this series or baseball in
general not to reference it, especially when it's Dodgers that
are involved, not some random team, but a team that
he had played for previously. He's been involved in a
(01:51:32):
lot of things that seem a little controversial. Yesterday's game
happened to include a bas running play, but that article
was written in advance of that, and obviously you can't
come at our dugout to talk to us. Happened?
Speaker 4 (01:51:44):
Can we finally establish something? Nobody threw the ball at
Dave Roberts.
Speaker 3 (01:51:49):
Now we've seen, we go to plenty of games everybody.
I think a lot of our listeners do too. When
you throw the ball around, or you are a pitcher
who wants nothing to do with the baseball the umpire
has given you, you usually underhand it to towards the
dug guy. You throw it in the direction of the
bat boy or as players will because that's just a pitcher,
you know, the first basement or third baseman, depending on
where he is from a dugout perspective, tosses the ball
(01:52:11):
back in the same fashion he tossed the ball towards
the closest to dugout. The Dodgers dugout, and yeah, first
of all, to me, yeah, there's way more on it
than normal like speed, but not so much that it
should have created this much. And it would not have
created this much. Granted, man, he's the one who threw it,
but no way it creates this much. Whole articles being
(01:52:33):
written about it is a pruder video being uncovered by
everybody about it. Serious, if Dave Roberts doesn't show who
the Dodgers are get in our heads more, they're in
their heads more than the Astros ever were. And he's
calling him out individually, he's talking about a player on
the other team. He's doing like, that's why I brought
it up yesterday, how Mike Shilt handled the whole thing.
(01:52:54):
He's like, I'm not talking about players on the other
team the way you just heard. What I'm going to
say about my guy is this and how he's done this.
As much as Manny seems to always find his way
into whatever, I don't think anybody in his clubhouse, where
is the only place that matters, isn't absolutely baseball wise,
in love what he has brought to their team. Same
(01:53:17):
for Fernando Tattoos, an absolute, totally confirmed and punished cheater,
but his clubhouse, as they should, loves him. Remember how
he contributed last year when he couldn't play for it
because he was suspended for cheating. Well now he's back
out there hitting bombs. They love him. It's about your guys,
(01:53:37):
not their guys. And I still kind of frown upon.
We don't like those mean words you said about us,
so we can't give you access. Is that seems I'm
not saying petty, because it's absolutely petty, but it's the
kind of thing they I almost feel like they shouldn't
be able to say no to if he's not being
if he wasn't out of line, and you just disagree
(01:53:59):
with it, I don't know that I would call it
out of line. Then. Okay, so he wrote some negative
things about you.
Speaker 4 (01:54:04):
This is even funnier now because I mean, basically, essentially
what Dodgers fans would be saying is we're getting cheated
again when they pay like a billion dollars and it
just keeps not working.
Speaker 3 (01:54:16):
So I need that series to end. Yeah. We mentioned
that during a break. The Dodgers have been to the
playoffs umpteen straight years, as in, they were going to
the playoffs every single year before they were the team
they got Mookie Bets from the Red Sox, before they
were the team that got Freddie Freeman from the Braves,
before they were the team that got show Hey from
the Angels, and they still just have the well, we
(01:54:37):
want a title after a sixty game season. That's still
all they've got it's called an asterisk.
Speaker 6 (01:54:42):
Anything else, Dan, Yeah, soft organizations. You can't really help them.
All right, let's move on to the NFL. You mentioned
about Aaron Rodgers and the Jets. There were at least
inferences yesterday that Rogers probably got Robert Salah fired. Well,
today he was on the Pat McAfee show with AJ
Hawk and he talked about how, yeah, that's not how
(01:55:02):
it happened at first.
Speaker 9 (01:55:04):
Any of the ridiculous allegations out there, I'm not going
to spend more than one sentence in response to it,
and that is that I resent any of those accusations
because they're patently false. And it's interesting the amount of
power that people think that I have, which I don't.
(01:55:25):
But I love Robert and it was, you know, one
of those days yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:55:34):
He got him fired in the way that we talked
about yesterday. So it is a little different. He got
him fired because of the way that their football team
has played. If he had played better this season, if
their offense was more successful, I think that they would
not well, first of all, I don't think they'd have
the record they have, and then there would not necessarily
be a need to move on from the head coach,
(01:55:55):
who I think we talked about different reports yesterday. One
report said Solo was going into work considering firing Hackett.
A report said that's not true, but what he was
going to do was say, hey, Nathaniel, you're still yo.
Se quit calling plays, and that might be what their
new interim coach also decides to do. But now it
spins it back to why he did have something to
(01:56:17):
do with his firing. I'm pretty sure Robert SAWA's first
choice for OC when he needed another new OC was
not Nathaniel Hackett. And maybe this helps us land Aaron
Rodgers and all that and make him happy. Sure, so
I get it. But if you're the reason Nathaniel Hackett's
there and he Aaron Rodgers is and your offense stinks
(01:56:39):
again this year, well that's part of the reason he's fired.
So yes, I at least I'm not gonna sit here
and say he told Whatdy to fire him the other
night when they both claim that didn't happen, and he
just told us here on the McAfee show, I couldn't
be further from the truth. I'm not real concerned about it.
Did he help the end of the Mike McCarthy era
in Green Bay one hundred percent. Did he do the
(01:56:59):
same thing with both, especially from an offensive standpoint, They
stopped running. They wouldn't even run Lafleur's offense because Aaron
didn't want to, so they ran his offense, and then
he also got run out of town.
Speaker 4 (01:57:11):
If the first thing everybody that knows you says after
something like this happens is well, he had something to
do with it, don't you think that's on you a
little bit?
Speaker 7 (01:57:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:57:19):
And I think I said, did he help get Lafleur fired?
Obviously that's not what happened. I meant did he help
end the relationship with Lafleur? Yeah? Yeah, he was the
one that got the one. I want to make sure everybody,
Yeah gets you just saying anything else, Dan.
Speaker 6 (01:57:32):
Real quick, Joseah bray you the comeback is nigh. He's
gonna play Puerto Rican Winter Ball with Senadoris of San Juan,
his teammates Zach Decenzo and Bryce Matthews.
Speaker 3 (01:57:44):
The comeback to find comeback and he's playing baseball again.
Speaker 4 (01:57:48):
There we go.
Speaker 3 (01:57:49):
By the way, Nie means almost or at or to
a short distance away? Is that Latin it's an archaic
word according to the Dictionary definition, it's actually use that there.
It's archaic con but it is a short distance away
an opportunity to play baseball and show somebody, even though
the Astros still only a bunch of money, I'd like
(01:58:10):
to play for you next year.
Speaker 4 (01:58:11):
Good for him, wish him all the best as he
continues to steal Jim Crane's money throughout the next calendar year.

(01:59:29):
you've been listening to the program today or you're very
very very smart and can guess seven one three two
one two five seven ninety is the number to call
in with the answer to this question. Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. Spent an hour with
Blum in studio today. Riveting conversation is always lots of fun,
lots of energy, and one of those segments, almost exclusively
(01:59:50):
was spent talking about his weekend and how much fun
he had despite the fact the astros weren't at the
center of it for the first time in a long time,
so he discussed his past weekend at most specifically this
past Saturday night. You just got to tell us where
he was. Where was Jeff Blum, our guest in the
three o'clock hour an Astro's broadcaster. Where was he enjoying
(02:00:13):
himself last Saturday night?
Speaker 4 (02:00:15):
There's several several acceptable versions of this answer, So if
you were listening, you have the gist of it.
Speaker 3 (02:00:21):
So I shouldn't be and I will be there. By
the way, Are you gonna go to Monster Gym? I
don't think so. Why not? It is right in between
that pocket post preseason pre regular season for the Rockets.
The Astros are obviously done, and it's not on a Sunday,
not for this particular ticketed giveaway event, no Rockets game
(02:00:43):
that night. That's right, it's in that pocket. So yeah,
I'll have to I have to check my calendar see
if the dates are open. Who am I going to
be seeing? Is somebody going to digging graves? Gravedigger?
Speaker 4 (02:00:53):
I love the commercials for those back in the day.
In fact, I think they still do it. I mean
it's just so over the top. In fact, that's that's
a dream of mine. I want to get some side hustle,
some side money voicing one of those, because I think
I can do the same as that voice guy. It
used to be Sunday Sunday Sunday right, that was the
same thing. Yes, they would. I don't know why they
were here on Sundays though.
Speaker 3 (02:01:13):
Well the third night or the second night of the show.
Speaker 4 (02:01:16):
I guess. But you're using a football stadium. That's that's
gonna run into some conflicts maybe, I don't know. I
like it, the little guy loves it.
Speaker 3 (02:01:25):
After they set it up and have their event, what
would the game be like the following Sunday if they
did not change the field? Awesome? I mean you would
have Tank Dell running deep up the hill and Downy
comes and there's the ball.
Speaker 4 (02:01:40):
I mean the amount of colossal tackles and injuries that
would happen, well.
Speaker 3 (02:01:45):
You can't are You're kind of much like tals Hill.
But if you're playing football trying to make a diving
catch into a hump, you know. The The answer to
this question is just to go up to anybody who
who played at old Oakland Coliseum as a member of
the Raider or against the Raiders could tell you that
(02:02:06):
there was dirt on the field. There were mounds of
dirt in different places. Well, if you've ever been there
dirt surface.
Speaker 4 (02:02:13):
Have you gone to one of these events before?
Speaker 6 (02:02:14):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (02:02:15):
No?
Speaker 4 (02:02:15):
Oh, Well, if you have and you've been on the
floor as it were for the with the pit pass,
literally on the dirt with the vehicle.
Speaker 3 (02:02:22):
It's not soft at all. Yeah, it's I mean, is
that playing at the Astrodome? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:02:29):
Yeah, only instead of concrete, there's just a layer of dust.
I mean basically, if you've ever that, that's what I
envisioned when I would see them playing in Oakland where
baseball like where they're running on the infield.
Speaker 3 (02:02:43):
Remember here at the Dome because of the astrosp there
were infield dirt spots on the field. The oilers would
play on the astro turf. It wasn't even real grass
around the dirt piles. There would be turf.
Speaker 4 (02:02:58):
Do you feel like, because nothing of substance was ever
really won there, that it's different than it will be
someday when Minute Maid's time comes to an end.
Speaker 3 (02:03:09):
In other words, people are like, I just get rid
of it. Nope, not at all, and only because it's
the first dome stadium. That's definitely one reason it was
your It was everything, I mean other than the Rockets.
Both of your teams played there for decades, right, both
of those teams two still provided you something even though
it hurts everybody's heart of pain, tons of well at
(02:03:29):
times it was actually the House of Pain. Yes that's true,
but they delivered a lot of painful losses. Back to
back conference championship losses to the Steelers on the Oilers side,
and then seven straight years of postseasons without even visiting
the conference title game. We could go on and on
about the Astros heartbreak seasons when usually at the hands
of the Braves. Well, if the Mets did it to
(02:03:50):
him in eighty six and in nineteen eighty and in
nineteen eighty one, and then the years you're talking about,
spanning some of the Dirker era before the entrat Minute
made Park. Yeah, I mean that's what it has for us.
But yeah, it was the first dome stadium. When Minute
may park, if when, when that ever happens and they
move into a different ballpark, they'll just be moving into
a different ballpark where they'll be changing this one, or
(02:04:10):
they'll demolish it and build a new one on the
same site. That's what's funny. You think you'll have you'll
have memories of the parades, You'll have memories of where
Julie's ball landed, and Springer's ball landed and Puhol's ball.
Well you have, but yeah, it'll be okay, I think
moving on.
Speaker 4 (02:04:22):
And you have two World Series victories, one of which
came there and one of which was on the road
Dodger Stadium. But like you're gonna you'll be able to
say if you were there, like they won it in
this building, like if they once Yeah, and played in
many many others.
Speaker 3 (02:04:39):
So the Astros were in the World Series four times
during this Golden era. Mm hmm. They won one away
the one they won uh here is one the Nationals
one here, Braves one here, Braves one here, White Sox
one here. Uh huh. Not in this era obviously, but
(02:04:59):
in this building. Yeah, this building has has seen a
World Series championship celebration the only time team for different teams.
Speaker 4 (02:05:09):
Okay, and this is gonna this is super different inside
baseball for baseball. The only time the Astros won the
World Series in Houston was when they didn't force them
to open the roof.
Speaker 3 (02:05:23):
It's true, though, I understand. Do you remember in five
how controversial that was. Oh, it's not gonna be as noisy.
I mean, I like the idea, like everything that goes
into the night game when the roof is open is everything.
I like it. It's an awesome setup. It really is
cool to be there for that at your arimitted game,
and too much wind does good social media posting. But
(02:05:44):
I could have it either way. But I thought it
was great, Like the atmosphere of the open stadium in
a postseason game at all, but certainly for the World Series.
I actually think that's how it should be. Did you
think it was not as loud though, uh, probably not
as loud? Yeah, I would agree. I mean, I get
that being a legit complaint, but then again, look at
pet has something to be loud about, and you're probably
(02:06:06):
gonna win the game anyway because you gave them something
to cheer about, which.
Speaker 4 (02:06:10):
Philly they're very outdoorsy, very very outdoors and they have
no problem making it loud.
Speaker 3 (02:06:15):
Roof open tonight for Padres at Petco against the Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (02:06:18):
Dodgers are going down. They're gonna die tonight. It's gonna
be awesome. From a metaphorical standpoint, that's uh. And again,
you got that Yankees Royals game sandwich in between, so
we're in the midst of it right now. A lot
of good baseball being played Phillies have a one nothing lead,
which means they'll definitely blow it.
Speaker 3 (02:06:39):
It just they only have one hit, and it I guess,
I guess it was rule to hit when Alec Bohm
bleeded one over to the third baseman who couldn't feel
it cleanly so he didn't throw home and didn't make
a play at all.
Speaker 4 (02:06:50):
We keep talking about that and how they have all
this talent, they spent all this billions of dollars on.
Speaker 3 (02:06:55):
To me, it's way more Oh my gosh, are you
kidding me?
Speaker 4 (02:07:00):
If the Phillies lose, given that they were the best
team in the National League give or take for most
of the season, and the Mets, of all teams, could
take them.
Speaker 3 (02:07:09):
Out one of their own basically, but nobody's like, literally
zero people will be surprised. If the Padres beat the Dodgers.
He'll be like, oh, well, it must be October again.
Speaker 4 (02:07:19):
But if the Phillies lose this series, especially to that team,
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:07:23):
I just feel like, uh, well, they weren't in when
the season ended for everybody but the Braves and Mets,
they were not in the playoffs. Then they played a
game and got into the playoffs. Then they played a
second game and tried not to get hurt because they
didn't care who won, and got the Braves in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (02:07:40):
I remember, all right, we will have a lot, and
I mean a lot to talk about Tomorrow afternoon at
three o'clock win we reconvene. Rockets basketball is right around
the corner. We will talk to you then
