Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams
series Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler. Are the A Team
A team?
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Well, let's see if I remember how to do this.
It is the A Team Sports Talk seven ninety a
Monday pre Christmas edition of the program Wex over there,
AC back in the saddle over here. Gosh, did anything
happen while I was gone last week? What an amazing
week of events that the Houston sports landscape had, and
(00:41):
I mean every team was involved up to an including
the Astros yet again, who officially announced the move that
they made on Thursday that we were all talking about then. Yeah,
I was talking about it too up in Kansas City,
and I was listening to WEX talk about it a
little as well. I didn't even tell you that I
was peaking in on that day, but Christian Walker to
the Astros official, which I guess officially unofficially officially ends
(01:04):
the Alex Bregman tenure here. I have thoughts on that, obviously,
But what happened Saturday in Kansas City the latest as
far as things we can talk about, I'll tell you this.
Driving back on a Sunday NFL Sunday, I should say,
after the Texans have played the day prior is super
weird because I get home last night, it doesn't feel
(01:26):
like a Sunday all day. It's a various Saturday feeling driving,
you know, the twelve hours it takes basically to get
from Kansas City back to my driveway. And I get
home and I'm working on rockets for tonight, and I
see all of the scores and I'm just like, oh
my gosh, I missed the entire I mean, I was
keeping an eye on things, but it just did not
feel like an NFL Sunday yesterday. And maybe for those
(01:46):
of you who watched the game regularly you weren't traveling,
it didn't quite feel like that either. It's just an
oddity this time of year that the Texans had their
you know, loss as it were, to the Kansas City Chiefs,
and the books before anything place on a full slate
of Sunday games. But let's start right there, because on
a cold, cold Saturday in Kansas City, they had a
(02:10):
good showing, did the Texans. But I mean, can we
not have Texan wide receivers have lengthy injuries happen on
touchdown passes multiple times in a season. Is that too
much to ask? Nico Collins. We were talking to him
in the locker room afterward, thinking about, Hey, the injury
that he's sustained to his hamstring that cost him a
(02:32):
number of games this year was on a touchdown pass,
a bomb, a long touchdown pass. Not unlike what happened
to Tank Dell on Saturday, But obviously Tank Dell and
when he's going to be back on a football field
is so far away in the future right now for
this Texans team, And it was just a sad, sad
state of affairs. The loss was very, very secondary in
(02:56):
that locker room and in the podium room after the
game on satur and Wex I know, watching back here
in Houston, you just had to be like, are you
kidding me? Right now? This kid again in December with
a season ending leg injury, very different than last year's.
But everything he did to get back on the field
and he was easily having his best game of the
(03:18):
season and then that happens.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Yeah, they used him.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
It helps, They looked his way, they thought they maybe
had an advantage with his matchup. Wish they had done
that a lot earlier than his last game of the season,
and it was certainly unfortunate that it happened on that
particular play, considering that play should have tied the game.
They then missed the extra points and really didn't do
(03:42):
anything else the rest of the game and lost. But yeah,
the Tank Deel injury, and this is more about you know,
Nicole Collins is running down the field, He's running so
fast he hurt his hamstring. Tank Dell's running down the
field and he got hit by a teammate trying to
make a play on the ball.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
That is very, very unformate.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Tamiko Ryans, by the way, if you a little while ago,
as he met with the media today, indicated there is
additionally a torn acl and of course he is out
for the season. Timeline for recovery is far from set.
There's no date yet set on surgery, but obviously that
is certainly in his future because of that portion of
the injury, if not more so. But yeah, just a
(04:21):
generic I've watched NFL football injuries before timeline that certainly
puts the season of twenty twenty five in some jeopardy.
I'm sure he'll be back at some point, but he
also will be coming back not long after an injury
like this, so that particular season, which in his case
is his third season, is probably not one that is
(04:42):
expected to be quite what it could have been had
he had a healthy off season. And again no word
on any kind of timeline there, and unfortunately, in Dell's case,
that might just essentially put him into a contract year.
The fourth year, the last year of his third round
pick rookie deal, might be his next healthy ish season
(05:02):
with the Texans. They are still the Vision champs. They
are still headed to the postseason. They do not have
a seed wrapped up, though about ninety minutes after Beyonce
wraps up on Wednesday, they might know their position because
if they don't beat the Ravens, they clinch the four seed.
They don't clinch anything if they beat the Ravens, but
the door is open for them to be the three seed,
(05:22):
and the door remains open for them to still end
up as the four seed. Still won't know much about
the opposition each of the three teams that we're holding
on too faint playoff hopes, the six win teams, the Dolphins, Colts,
and Bengals, they all won, so they are all still
alive and maybe.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
All three of them will remain alive.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
As we head into the final weekend of the season,
Texans will have a long time off in between this
game coming up in two days and their last game
of the season still unscheduled like everybody else for Week
eighteen at the Titans. But yeah, the game certainly felt
a little secondary. It's the second week in a row
the Texans have been involved with an extremely long injury
(06:00):
delay of gravesh. You know, the very scary nature in
how you saw the reactions from everybody, And obviously CJ.
Stroud addressed it Saturday after the game his own emotions.
He addressed it again today, so look forward to sharing
with you some of his thoughts about his own actions
and how Joe Mixon he mentioned it then you were
there talking with Joe in the locker room. Also, he
(06:22):
obviously was asked about how he tried to help both
Tank and CJ and everybody else. Will Anderson was right
there with him, so were many other players, So were
Chiefs players. Chiefs and Texans players on the field after
the game certainly a point of their get together. And yeah,
it was just a week or a little less than
a week after Grant Dbo's had to remain in Houston
(06:44):
due to the collision with Kaylen Bullock, which, of course
Kaylen Bullock was fined for along with four other fines.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Test the timing of the release of those fines. Hey
five minutes after Tank's basically dead. Let's tell you, guys,
how many Texans got fined for the doll.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Ago timing of its standard. Texas don't often play during
that time. I know, Saturday is when they release that
they update the weekly fines, and it did happen to
occur during Texans football. Jimmy Ward also his season is
over his foot injury, which did appear to be more
than usual, and it was Dimiko acknowledged that today Jack
(07:21):
Mason's described as not necessarily season ending.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
But they play. Like I said on Wednesday, Jack Mason's
not going to play in that game, they didn't say that.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
I'm telling you that their estimated practice report probably won't
be out until we're off the air today since they're
quote unquote practicing later this afternoon will be their only
on field work this week. Yesterday's estimated practice report again
tells you very little. There are a few other things
they have to be concerned with clearly at the wide
(07:51):
receiver position. There are some major concerns because your two
and three are no longer available to you the rest
of the season. John Metchi was not available on Saturday,
maybe available on Wednesday his shoulder injuries. Javier Hutchinson obviously
will step into a very prominent role with this team.
He's done that before this season. The production certainly hasn't
(08:12):
necessarily matched the role you'd expect him to play, and
this week it might have to be different. He might
have to be a guy that CJ looks to. Their
offensive line may again have to figure things out on
the fly. They did that last week last Saturday, a
couple of days ago, with Kendrick Green finally not being
told no, no, man, we don't want you out there,
finally being told I guess we have to put you
(08:32):
out there, and finally showing them maybe this could have
happened even sooner.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Not that he was unbelievable, but there certainly wasn't.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
A whole lot of issue beyond any other issues they've
had all season long. I wouldn't categorize it as a
catastrophic pass protection day, but I also wouldn't say they
did a good job in pass protection either were somewhere
in between the days where he has pretty much has
had more time to throw recently and was being hit
too often eleven times in the backfield with quarter back hits,
(09:00):
similarly with tackles for loss, and those two things do
kind of go hand in hand. Usually when you're not
able to keep the other team off of you, those
things add up. Texans fall to nine and six. Obviously,
he mentioned Christian Walker. By the way, we hope to
hear from Christian Walker here on the show today. They
will have an introductory press conference coming up in a
little over an hour at three point thirty, so we
(09:22):
should be able to let you hear from him then
and hope to catch up with him. Additionally before again,
we have to cut it a little short today because
the Rockets are going to try to win a second
game in a row on the road. Last night they
beat the Raptors. Tonight they have the Charlotte Hornets, a
team that is one to zero against them.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Hey, seven wins and one of them is against the
Rockets on opening night, kidding me.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
That is correct. They're a little bit banged up.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Like the teams the Rockets have seen recently, the Pelicans
this past weekend, the Raptors last night, no Brandon Miller tonight,
among other injuries for the Hornets. So yes, expectations are
the Rockets will be able to handle that. They played
pretty poorly last night and still handled business barely. But
(10:11):
we do anticipate and certainly will drive through both the
Walker conversation to give your opinion on where things stand
with the new look Astros, the four players that are
now new Astros Walker and the three acquired in the
Kyle Tucker deal, and quite obviously what is ahead for
the Texans.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
They've been weakened as a team.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
We already felt a little uneasy about playoff predictions. And
you know what matchups do you think might help them well?
At the four seed if that's where they end up,
they're going to have one home game and it's either
against an AFC North team Pittsburgh or the Baltimore Ravens
who they play at ourg Stadium in two days, or
the Chargers or Dolphins I can't even or Colts or
(10:53):
Broncos just do the whole league. Well, I can't say
for certain it won't it won't be one of those
teams on the outside looking in, there is still a
scenario where two of those teams get in.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
It's very very unlikely.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Honestly, yesterday's game between the Bills and Patriots could have
been I think a swing game to all of this,
because if the Bills had found a way to lose
to the Patriots, and they tried, the Patriots made it
pretty hard on them, and Josh Allen was very pedestrian yesterday,
it would have clinched the number one seed for the Chiefs. Well,
the Chiefs also play on Wednesday. The Chiefs play the Steelers.
(11:28):
If the Steelers take care of that, I mean, all
sorts of things could have all of a sudden kind
of cleared up a little bit. But instead you got
a full weekend of AFC football. Because the NFC plays
tonight and basically nothing happened. Ravens clinched an obvious playoff spot.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
That's it. The three teams that had not been eliminated
are still not eliminated, the division that had not been
decided is still undecided, and the three teams in the
wild card position remained the same without knowing any of
their possible future, and one in two ill undecided.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yeah, it's it's clear as mud as they.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Say, that's what makes it intriguing and entertaining.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
No, the NFL is king, and again as we would
have several layers to get to from that game on Saturday,
I'll peel another one back. I'll go off. It's been
a week and some change since I've done that, so
it's probably about time, just from what I saw in
person and what you guys definitely saw on television, I'm sure,
but all of that and a whole lot more here
(12:29):
on a Monday pre Christmas edition of the A Team
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (12:35):

Back to Adam Clinton at Adam Wexler the eighteen on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Monday edition of The A Team following the Texans loss
to the Chiefs in Kansas City, twenty seven nineteen the final.
By the way, in case you were living under a rock,
it was again felt like it was just so secondary.
When you have an injury the likes of what Tank
Dell suffered and again dislocated kneecap, torn ACL He's got
(14:36):
a long, long road ahead of him. And I think
you know you're not a doctor at the time of
the injury, and you're certainly not one if you're down
on the field and you're say a CJ. Stroud and
you get emotional. But when they have to bring in
a bigger, basically makeshift ambulance to cart him off the
field as opposed to the initial one they brought out there,
(14:56):
And that's exactly what happened inside Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday,
and Tanks got a towel over his head and CJ
looks like he's an absolute emotional wreck. You know it's
bad before you know anything about it. I was going
through it. That's what CJ said after the game about
his emotions. Yeah, and he took him on his initial
question about because the first thing he was asked was
(15:18):
about the injury, obviously, and it took him a good
thirty seconds to gather himself again to you know, just
give a thought on what had happened. And you know,
it's not just that he's one of the weapons for CJ.
Stroll in the offense. This is his best friend of
the team. And Tomiko talked about that before CJ came
(15:40):
in the room, and everybody in that locker room was
talking about not just you know, Xavier Hutchinson talked about
how he was the light of the team. That was
the exact quote phrasing he used. That's not something you
say about a guy who's just good at catching the
football or running routes. That's you know, we keep talking
about all these guys are a good clubhouse that the
(16:00):
Astros are either you know, sending out or you know
have coming in or whatever that matters, especially in a
locker room that's the size of an NFL one. So
these guys, you know, talked about Tank Dell much more
as a person after that that loss. And I'm talking
about the loss of their teammate, not the loss on
the football field, on the scoreboard. It was so far
(16:22):
from what they were wanting to talk about or even
think about after that game. And it's a shame because
that was a competitive football game until it wasn't. Of course, wex.
Speaker 5 (16:33):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
I mean it was a one score game. It was
pretty competitive.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Yeah. But after the Tank Dell injury, which is something
that I wanted to ask repeatedly, and I just you know,
you got to read the room sometimes and it's just
not the right move. When Tank Dell got carted off
the field, their offense went in the toilet, and I
know it was on a touchdown, so you had a
defensive series coming up, but they didn't do anything. And
(16:57):
I think you actually tweeted us I supporting the.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Acts offense before and after dell injury Saturday. At the time,
thirty nine plays, two hundred and sixty three yards, sixteen points,
zero three and outs on their six drives before the injury,
including obviously the touchdown reception on which he was hurt from.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Take tell.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
After the injury, they had three drives. They ran nineteen plays.
They had forty eight yards. That's not very many yards
per play, It's less than three. They did score three points,
two of the three drives worth three and outs. They
also couldn't get the ball back for a potential fourth
drive because they couldn't get the Chiefs off the field
they ran out of timeouts might have been a different
(17:38):
way to use them, but I don't think there was
a huge error in judgment with how they did it.
Definitely could have done it a little differently, but this
was really not very different from their whole season. It's
why we keep reaching back for the are they really
a threat? Are they any better than they've been since
(17:59):
the beginning of the season, And they had games like
this essentially right out of the gate. You know, their
opening game of the season, they were the Chiefs to
the Colts being the Texans. They kept the Colts off
the field at the end of the game to win
the game. That's what the Chiefs just did to the
Texans in a one score game. You know, after the
Bears game, which was another one score game, They've had
nothing but them. They've been in this situation time and
(18:21):
time again. They haven't had a day of football, even
the Patriots game where you felt like, just as soon
as the offense is on the field, forget it. They're
going down there and they're gonna score, whether it's a
touchdown or a field goal. The opponent's not stopping this
offense today. And conversely, even on the days where their
defense has been really, really good, it just doesn't feel like, Okay, well,
there's no way they're gonna go anywhere. It happened a
(18:43):
week ago or less than a week ago when they
did it to the Dolphins. Dolphins got the ball back
in a one score game because the Texans offense couldn't
keep it away from them, and the very first play
the Texans intercepted too, and they ended the game. They
have done that on occasion, but the overall sixty minutes
worth of football on most of these games is very,
very similar. The Texans had their moments where they did
(19:03):
drive down the field. Like I said in the opening segment,
I was pleased that they realized Tank Dell is an
asset to their offense, and I'm not.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
I mean, I hate saying it.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
The game after his season as truth, but he's been
out there all year. He's been available to them all year.
And granted, defense is going to do things differently based
on how they're getting after CJ. The Texans are going
to do things different differently based on how much time
there is out there. He was an active for one
game this year he had more than six catches as
(19:34):
he did yes or Saturday only one time this year,
the seven catch game against New England. He followed that
up with a zero catch game against Green Bay. He
just has not been a huge part of their offense
like his talent suggests he should have been. He had
one catch for longer than forty yards this year. That
(19:57):
I do think is explainable for the most part, in
how little.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
Time they think CJ has to throw a.
Speaker 4 (20:04):
Lot of people wondering why they call screenplay so often
against the Kansas City Chiefs. Wagas work screenplays, Yes, well, yeah,
they are not calling him in anticipation.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Chiefs callcreplay negative.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
Yeah, well, the Chiefs are able to execute them and
they don't have to rely on them, even with an
okay offensive line.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
The Texans have to call them.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
As much as that pains me to say it, they
have so little else that they think can be helpful
to their offense. Like Bobby Slok was asked about it today,
so I'm not gonna share with you what he said,
so he could actually tell you what he said. But
they call them out of necessity, and it's all encompassing.
It's the same conversation we've had now for fifteen games.
They don't have a good offensive line, and they didn't
(20:43):
have a good offensive line in this game, even with
the shakeup, which then got shook up when Shack Mason
was done after four snaps and might not be back
for this week almost assuredly won't be with the short week,
And so their play calling is reflective of that, their
schemes are reflective of that, and they're not even doing
that right in my opinion. To hammer down on the
(21:04):
screenplays is one thing, and I do want to wait
a minute on that for the explanation first, but I
still think they're doing things with their scheme, with their
personnel groupings, and certainly with what they come out of
the huddle with. They're begging the Chiefs to, hey, look
(21:24):
at us. Every single player is within eight yards of
the football. Here's a bunch formation in the middle of
the field. Here's another bunch formation on second over. And
how are you going to spread the field? You have
no time to throw to begin with, and you just
brought the entire defense on top of your whoever's running routes.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
I'm not a huge fan of it.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
With what they're already up against, it doesn't make any
sense to me. Why you wouldn't spread the field out
a little bit more. Why you wouldn't have probably some
different personnel groups out there, because they're not always left
into block one big run from Joe Mixon and then
very unable to do it. And I do think slow
explanation of that is also reflective of, well, what they
(22:04):
can run them if they want, but they know they're
not going anywhere if they do that, and they have
to do the opposite of what everyone's been saying in
the NFL for decades. Oh yeah, the run games opens
up the pass. The Texans are playing it the opposite way,
and in my opinion, they're probably doing it right. They're
passing the ball to attempt to open up the run game,
and it probably didn't work, at least in this case,
(22:26):
and I'm not sure that it will work against the
Ravens on Wednesday either, especially with a pass offense that
Demko said this today. We don't really have time to
bring anybody else in. Jared Wayne, if John Metchi is healthy,
Xavier Hutchinson and Nico Collins, maybe they're Steven Simms in
the mix. These are the guys wide outs that will
(22:47):
be catching passes from CJ. Stroud on Wednesday at NRG Stadium.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Oh, I've never been more convinced that my prediction that
this three game stretch would go one and two is
going to do just that. They're going to get destroyed
on Wednesday. I mean, I'm sorry, that's just how I
feel because I saw what I saw on Saturday, and
now you've taken several different key I don't even call
him weapons if it's an offensive lineman going down. You know,
you know my thoughts on the line at this point.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
Yeah, this is not kicking someone while they're down the offense. Reality, well,
the reality of it is, this is the second time
this year one of their guards has been hurt, their
starting guards, Kenyan Green first, now Shack Mason. It doesn't
it's not hurting the team because those players weren't good.
Jack Mason is not having a good year. It's the
(23:32):
second straight year he hasn't had a good year. I
don't like to say it today, but since I've said
it many times before, I hope it doesn't come across
that way because that's not I mean again, it has
nothing to do with you know, the fact that he's
not going to be playing this week because he's hurt.
I appreciate him answering the bell. The guy missed three
snaps all year. That helps your team when you're out there.
(23:52):
But he's not playing at a high enough level that
the team. I didn't notice anything, and I never have
and whenever he when he's out there, I don't know
some doing things that.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Man, this really makes this O line better.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
And when Ken Drick Green was his replacement for nearly
every snap this game, there was no discernible difference, and
I did not expect there to be.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
You would think there would be.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
If this is your starter and those are your reserves
that you permanently never play, you must think they can't
play at a high level or the level that matches
your starter. And the Jimmy Ward injuries is interesting only
that it's not the starter. He he is the replacement piece.
He's playing for Jalen Petrie, even though he's been a
starting safety at a different part of their defense. They're
(24:35):
gonna have to shuffle the deck there, probably more than
you would want to try to figure out the best
way to defend the Ravens. The Ravens have one threat
down the field, Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman's a nice player,
but I don't think they're concerned with him even if
he goes off on Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
Feel free to come back and say, what did you
say about Russhod Bateman?
Speaker 4 (24:53):
But it's a very different looking group of skill guys.
The Texans are gonna get hurt with Isaiah likely you're
not first guy misses him.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
He gains thirty yards. Mark Andrews moss is somebody goes to.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
Do anything, and Ketros Maler goes down the field, just
as hill injury last week obviously is impactful. Derrick Henry
is not the same doesn't look like the same Dereck Henry.
It was trying to run with Will Levis and the
crap they played at quarterback in Tennessee last year.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
He's a problem now that you have.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
Lamar Jackson out there. If not for Saquon Barkley's pretend
run at MVP, everyone will be saying, Wow, what happened?
Speaker 3 (25:28):
I thought Derrick Henry wasn't this player anymore?
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Well, he, like most every other NFL player, can happily
take an assist from the ten guys that are on
the field with him. If those guys are awesome. Sometimes
you become even more awesome than people thought you could
return to and he has been awesome this year.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
When they lose on Wednesday and then they bludgeon whatever
semblance of the Tennessee Titans in the finale, at whatever
time they decide they're eventually going to play that game
in the finale of this regular season, they will be
ten and seven, right on the nose, like I predict.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
The funny thing about that game is so now there's
only one two win team because the Raiders went off
and beat the Jaguars. The Giants are a two win team.
The Titans are a three win team. The Titans do
not have a quarterback. I'm sure the Titans would love
to be near the top of the draft. The Texans
could have their seed clinched as early as Wednesday, like
(26:22):
I told you earlier. If they lose to the Ravens,
they're the four seed. If the Texans are clinched before
they get to Week eighteen, CJ. Stroud, Nico Collins, Laramie Tunsel,
Will Anderson Junior, Daniel Hunter, none of them are playing,
so both teams will not care at all.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
About the game.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
The Titans will care more trying to lose, then the
Texans will care about whatever happens. They just want to
get out of the game. If they win, they're fine.
If they lose, they're fine. They're just trying to get
in and out of the game healthy. So players that
would help them win won't be playing.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
All of the good news for the Titans is that
it'll be a Davis Mills game in all likelihood under
that scenario. We'll continue to discuss us this and so
much more here on The A.

Speaker 6 (28:08):
Should be putting out between five and sham posts a day.
Speaker 7 (28:12):
Four hundred people were arrested for the things that they
said on social media.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
History repeats itself type, Ben, You'll succeed.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Never doubt that you're the one who pus for no
one building. You're the best X. Nothing's gonna ever top
You know you're the best of X, posting an every
single day.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
You know you're the best of X, breaking the entire enginet.
One topic we've not yet discussed is in play now
here on the best of X. Some hour from now,
we're gonna hear from Christian Walker of the Astros. The
introductory press conferences scheduled and official.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
He is an Astro.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
He will be playing first base for this team moving
forward through the three years of his deal. We have
said that before with a previous first basement on a
nearly identical deal, and that did not even last two seasons.
This will be different. Has nothing to do with best offcts,
but this does. The College Football Playoff first round games
one Friday night, three more on Saturday complete. We now
(29:18):
have eight teams remaining with a chance to win the
college football national title. The four teams who were sitting
back on their couch enjoying some cold beverages waiting to
see who their opponent might be. Lots of intrigue on
who those teams might win. The games would be. Yeah,
the four home teams, they all won. They all covered.
There was zero competitive football being played in the college
(29:42):
football Playoffs. Some of the bowl games were competitive, but
not any of the playoff games. Credit to Clemson for
scoring twenty four points, really no credit to any of
the other teams. SMU gave their game away by throwing
two touchdown passes to the other team while on offense.
Notre Dame really didn't have much trouble with Indiana and
(30:04):
funny enough, since they happened to be the last game
of the day. This is why the Best of X
was so good because Tennessee. Tennessee got blown out so
fast in their game against Ohio State. At Ohio State,
even the scored halftime didn't have anyone believing, Okay, maybe
it's not gonna be that bad. They got smoked, but
the timing of it was, well, they were the last game.
(30:26):
The SEC team in this case was the underdog, the
road team a selection as a wild card like the Longhorns.
The Longhorns were at home and favored big and covered
Tennessee got smoked. So it already quieted things down from
Friday night, but all night Friday night and throughout the
day on Saturday. Man, seriously, you guys picked the wrong teams.
(30:48):
And Lane Kiffin got in on this one twenty in
the afternoon on Saturday, in the midst of a second
or a first game that was lopsided, the SMU game.
Lane Kiffin coaches the Ole miss They were one of
three SEC teams that thought they could have been selected,
Alabama and South Carolina among them, but they weren't. So
he tweeted way to keep us on the edge of
(31:11):
our seats committee dot dot dot riveting. That was met
with a lot of good comments, which is what the
best of X is all about. But a quote tweet
from Joel Klatt, who's been heard on our airwaves many
many times over the last handful of years does a
great job. Caliver in college football and unafraid to share
his opinions there On Fox Sports, he quote tweeted lang
(31:33):
Kiff and it said, if your team played half as
well as you tweet, he would likely be in. Most
people seem to like that. Dan Orlovsky said, good lord, Joel.
Joel said, too far. And we know one of their
big wins was they beat Georgia. Well again, they had
(31:54):
more games on their schedule than just one afternoon, one
evening of football. If you only have to win one
of your games, which apparently that's all some people think
oh Miss needed to do to get in the playoffs.
Because Georgia happened to be good, then great put him in.
Who cares about the other losses that like the other losses,
the three losses that weren't to Georgia. Great, you beat
(32:15):
a good team. Who did you lose to? Who did
you show us that you couldn't play your way in?
You thought, well, this win is enough. Many many people
got in here, even non Ole Miss fans, saying would
have loved to watch a better team with good players play.
Is this not a legitimate gripe? So there are people
on their side. You know who did Indiana and SMU
(32:36):
play all season? Kentucky Vandy and oh you would all
have ten wins with SMU and Indiana's schedule, they would
Andandy Kentucky. Really, I can't believe real SEC fans, even
real yeah fans, not just people who covered Nobody really
thinks that, do they.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Well, you know why this is such a big deal
to begin with. It mean, I'm sure that everything could
have happened the way it did no matter what. But
it's the fact that Lane Kiffin is so active on
social media that makes this fun.
Speaker 4 (33:09):
Joel went right to the heart of the matter, and
I think people do recognize that was the fun of it.
Just as Ac mentioned, he wasn't really dogging him, He
was doing it on the platform that Lane likes to
to stalk, to talk about and get involved in.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
Stock was correct.
Speaker 4 (33:22):
Yeah, someone said to Lane, Buddy is still talking after
losing to Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Yes, they lost to Kentucky. Not a good team.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
Yeah, they probably have a better record if they played
in a different conference. But did you watch Kentucky all year,
week in and week out and say, man, that is
a really good football team. I can totally understand how
all this could lose to them the way they did.
That's a really good team. I would hope not I
get it. Yes, SEC weekend and week out is difficult,
and teams that might win more games than other conferences
like Kentucky would probably.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
Show you, Yeah, we can win eight or nine games.
They're not. That's not what's reality here.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
And if the ec wants their own playoff, and I
don't even want to suggest it because I don't even
think it's far fetched, I think they might end up saying,
can we generate enough money by ourselves?
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Look at the money.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
Look at the money ESPN gave us to have the
SEC network to carry all of our games. They want
our games early, they want our games late, they want
every night of the week. They've got us, and this
is a huge, huge money maker for us. So maybe
it's somewhere in our future. Pouting on X because his
nine and three team didn't get into the ECFP is
absolutely hilarious.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Their three losses.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
You ask Florida, who won their bowl game and rose
to eight and five, LSU, who has their bowl game
in front of them here in Houston against Baylor. They
were eight and four and Kentucky. The team I just
told you isn't very good because they only won three
other games. Kentucky was four and eight in the SEC
(34:51):
where I have to discount those eight losses because they
were hard games.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Very very hard, very hard. All right, we will take
a quick time out here. We will come back. We'll
jump back into some of what some of the participants
in the Texans affair over the weekend had to say.
Moving forward, They've got a game in like forty eight hours. Basically,
that's next.
Speaker 6 (35:14):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
Back to Adam Clinton at Adam Wexler.
Speaker 6 (35:22):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
The A Team rolling along here on Sports Talk seven
to ninety simulcast on Space City Home network will begin
at the top of the hour. Christian Walker's press conference
will begin at the bottom of next hour, and we
still have a number of guests to get to as well.
Alex Glaze, Aaron Wilson all before we stop doing our
(35:53):
show at five o'clock early because of Rockets basketball out
in Charlotte, but mentioned that the Texans and what happened
in Kansas City and what will continue to happen the
rest of the way with what's left of the Texans.
And yeah, it feels like that when you have three
starters go down one well, two for the season and
one for probably the remainder of the regular season, at
(36:17):
least in Shaq Mason, I just kind of feel I
got this feeling Wex. I don't know how you felt
after the game. I'm just like, you know, I wasn't
optimistic about what the Texans were going to do once
they got to the postseason, mainly because I feel like
they're going to probably match up with the team they're
about to lose two on Wednesday in all likelihood. I mean,
there's lots of scenarios out there. I just feel like
(36:37):
that's what's gonna happen, because that's what always happens.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
I mean, it is very possible, and the percentages are
pretty close, but they they can't assuredly prevent it, but
they come pretty darn close to preventing it if they
lose on Wednesday. And aren't you because the Ravens would
most likely not guaranteed, but most likely when the division.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Yeah, and aren't you as you look at the recent seasons,
let's just put it like that. You know, last year
obviously they met twice, once to start the year and
once in the postseason. Don't you feel like this is
the best version of the Ravens that Lamar Jackson has
been the starter for, at least.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
Offensively, probably because I think they actually are better suited
to do the things they want to do because of Henry.
They're really no different if you really look at the
overall numbers. They've had the best rushing attack in the
NFL for five years, and this year they're technically slightly
behind Philadelphia, but overall over that time, all of the
years before this year have been played without Derrick Henry,
(37:37):
but whomever they had back there, and it was usually
two or three guys in any given season, they still
ran the ball comparably to the way they're running it
this year. But I think they're better because it's Derrick Henry,
because defenses do have to employ a little bit different
personnel because of who he is. They've had running backs
run for eighteen hundred yards as a group before, but
(37:59):
I do think it's different because of him. The stats
on Lamar Jackson, unfortunately might prevent him from winning the
MVP when he's gonna turn in one of the greatest
seasons in the history of the NFL from a quarterback. Yes,
statistically speaking, better than Josh Allen's is this year. But
I don't think Lamar is ahead of him in the
MVP race because they're not trying to win him the MVP.
They're trying to win games, and having him run the
(38:21):
ball in from inside the ten is something they could do,
but they don't have to because Derek Henry's standing right
behind him, so they just keep giving him the ball.
Josh Allen has a lot more rushing touchdowns than he
does because James Cook is a different running back. Cook
has a lot of touchdowns, but in a different way.
I do think the Ravens offense the answer to your
question is yes, But the team, I don't know that
(38:43):
it's any better because I don't think their defense is
quite to the level that they have been. I think
it's a bad matchup for the Texans with some of
the players that they have defensively, and their defense is
playing better football of late, but their defense defenses over
the last handful of years, and this version of the tech,
since it has only seen last year's Ravens beginning of
the year and the end of the year first and
(39:04):
last game. They were better than this year's group, I think,
but they've had previous defenses even better than this, and
even looking at the forecast for the Ravens, they're dangerous.
They're a favorite among several They've had other teams go
to the postseason where everybody said, as long as Lamar
Jackson does what he's been doing, this is the Super
Bowl rep from the AFC. They didn't think that last year.
(39:27):
They don't think that this year, even though there's tons
of respect for them. But they're at best the third
choice behind both Kansas City and Buffalo.
Speaker 8 (39:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
I disagree with that. Okay, I've seen enough of Kansas
City all year long, and I saw it again in
person on Saturday. They're just not that good. They're not.
I don't care what you say. I don't care it.
Anybody you can call in seven one, three, two, seven ninety.
I mean, they have a lot of help, especially in
(39:57):
that first half. If you're gonna call the type of
calls that, for example, Tank Dell had called against him,
if you're going to help along Mahomes on a the passer,
because that's how you say that version of roughing the
passer on that play, then yeah, they I could see
them be a favorite, like if you can guarantee that
(40:18):
for me. But I'm telling you right now, if the
game is in Arrowhead, I'm taking the Bills and I'm
taking the Ravens and I'm not even hesitating.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
Yeah, I do think there're gonna be a lot of
people that agree with you. I'm not one of them,
but I do think that that makes a lot of
sense if you're really, you know, locking in on what
they have done. It's more of a negative for them
because they're being compared against previous versions of their team,
and everyone knows how great those teams have been grown
dominance offensively, but this is the best team I've ever
had defensively in my opinion, provided everyone's healthy. Chris Jones
(40:49):
obviously was heard against the Texans, so a little bit
of concern about what he'll be like moving forward, and
they've had other issues. But the other side of it
is and the Texans were the first team to see
a glimpse of it. They unfortunately, for the rest of
the AFC, they're doing the opposite of what the Texans
are doing. The Texas lost three players, two for the
season and one maybe for the rest of the season
(41:11):
until the playoffs in Mason, but we don't have a
timeline on him. The Chiefs are doing the opposite. Hollywood
Brown just played his first game of the year. Zaiah
Pachecko is now back in I think his usual regular
season form. You know, they're getting players back. They could
be much better offensively if Mahomes and those guys get
(41:31):
on the same page, because you could look at what
they're doing offensively. He's basically playing with a brand new
group outside of Travis Kelce. He's had a couple weeks
with DeAndre Hopkins. He's getting back a couple weeks with
Isaiah Pacheco. He just played his first game with Hollywood Brown.
They reacquired Juju Smith Schuster. This is the rookie season
for Xavier Worthy. I mean, the list goes on and
on and on, and he's obviously I think the biggest
(41:52):
problem with their offense, even though they've made it to
a Super Bowl with a worse offensive line, their biggest
problem offensively is still their offensive line. What happened on
Sunday is what or Saturday is why. I think the
Chiefs probably still will be They're my favorite, especially if
they're playing at home, as much as the Texans brought
what you thought would be the best set of defensive
players to combat what they do.
Speaker 3 (42:14):
Oh, it's a bad offensive line. It's a hobbled Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (42:17):
We've got the best two tandem edge rushers in the
league and a very good defensive front. He wasn't hassled much.
They certainly couldn't catch him much and he was barely touched.
And if that's the case, they didn't turn the ball over,
they've been close because they have been turning the ball
over once that.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
Ca Well, they turned the ball over, but then it
was taken away.
Speaker 9 (42:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (42:38):
I thought that was actually the bigger problem with the call.
I thought it was a fumble, but I didn't think
the Texans were going to score off of it because
I thought they did hit Pat Mahomes in the head unfortunately.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
Yeah, well we'll carry that over because there's two aspects
of that call in and of itself that it was
a horrible first half of the officials both ways. Okay,
it's not a Texans thing, so we'll get into that.
And yeah, I promise you will hear from Demiko and company.
Uh when we start hour number two, straight ahead here
on the eighteen.
Speaker 6 (43:07):
The Aight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
If you woke up with joint pain, if you've been
trying to live your daily life with joint pain, or
if there's just pain in your day to day activities
or lack of activities because of that joint pain, it's
only one place to call.
Speaker 3 (43:23):
That's QC Kinetics.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
Because you don't want surgery and you don't want the
drugs or downtime that comes with an operation. You want
to get real healing relief, lasting healing relief and pain relief,
and that is from QC Kinetics.
Speaker 4 (43:37):
How buck get set up with a free consultation with
the crew over at QC Kinetics. Give them a call
and then we'll do that for you at seven one

haven't made that phone call and gotten involved with their
advanced protocols, their regenerative medicine or at QC Kinetics.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
It's cutting edge. It's good to get.
Speaker 4 (44:00):
You back onto that life you once led seven one
to three, nine to one, three fifty to eighty five
for QC Kinetics.
Speaker 1 (44:10):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams series,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A.
Speaker 2 (44:26):
Welcome into a Monday edition of The A Team here
on Sports Talk seven to ninety and now Space City
Home Network will be on with you guys for the
next couple of hours before we make way for Rockets basketball.
They will wrap up this three game trip out East
as they are looking to sweep it following last night's
(44:46):
win over the Toronto Raptors. You got the Charlotte Hornets
tonight and then New Orleans following that on Thursday. But
in the meantime, a lot of discussion in this first
hour about the Texans law in Kansas City over the weekend,
and loss is the operative word there. You obviously had
it on the scoreboard as the Texans fall at Arrowhead
(45:07):
twenty seven to nineteen, but also losing three starters including
Tank Dell torn ACL, dislocated kneecap, and as Demiko Ryans
mentioned today, once they get in there to do the
surgical repairs, there's probably some other things they're going to
need to fix. We'll hear from Demiko in just a
second here. But going into that game, you knew it
(45:31):
was going to be a grind because you had just
played on a short week, albeit just by one day.
But now you got to turn around and you got
to play a team that seems to be your kryptonite
in the Baltimore Ravens. They took care of C. J.
Stroud not once but twice last season, and they are
coming to Houston.
Speaker 3 (45:48):
At least you'll be playing at home.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
But the Texans were already shorthanded really going into that
game against the Chiefs, and they got very very shorthanded
coming out of that game. I mean, Tank Dell just
flew back to Houston yesterday because he had to stay
overnight in Kansas City and uh, Tamiko Ryans and company
talking about that, I mean literally licking their wounds going
into Wednesday's matchup. Here's what the head coach of the
(46:13):
Texans had to say about the.
Speaker 9 (46:14):
Injuries update for for a Tank. Uh so we all
know it's unfortunate, significant knee injury. Uh he dislocated to
knee who towards a c L some other things there
and he'll have to get repaired, so he'll be out
for the year. Also with Jimmy Ward midfoot spring, Uh,
(46:34):
he'll be he'll require surgery, he'll be out, you know,
for the remaining of the year as well. And shock
knee injury, he'll be week to week.
Speaker 6 (46:43):
It's just tough news and those.
Speaker 9 (46:46):
Are you know, especially with Tanking and Jimmy, two great guys,
great players. They will miss him dearly. They've meant a
lot to our team. Uh, we know we have a
lot to pick up losing those two guys, but those
guys will attack the rehab the right way and they'll
be back in due time. So I thought some prayers
(47:07):
are still with them as they attacked the rehab and
knowing everything that's to come, but they'll they'll make a recovery.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
Yeah. I mentioned this in the first hour on just
the state of the team and how they were going
through the motions following the game on Saturday in the
locker room, Nico Collins and Joe Mixon in the locker room.
Obviously there you heard Tamiko and CJ. Stroud at the
podium and it just it was a tough loss and
(47:35):
all that kind of stuff, but it was just so
far from the minds of everybody and that kind of
really showed you not to be little the other two injuries.
But it was all about Tank. I mean, everything was
about Tank Dell. Everything was about all that he had
gone through to get back to play this season and
now he's gonna have to go through so much. And
I'll tell you more than one person just talking amongst
(47:57):
the media there, you know, you're asking yourself is he
going to be ready for training camp in twenty twenty
five with how complex the injury was, and not to
mention the play itself, he held onto a ball to
score a touchdown that if it weren't for the missed
extra point by Knymi, Fairbairn would have tied the game
(48:18):
at seventeen. But if seventeen sixteen at the time you
mentioned the first hour, wex the numbers are lack thereof
for the Texans offense post Tank Dell exit from that game,
they just went in the toilet and clearly they were
shaken up both sides, but significantly the offense and significantly
the quarterback. Who you know, CJ. Stroud, he's your leader.
(48:40):
A lot of people were disgustingly taking shots at him,
showing a motion on the field I'm not even gonna
address that and dignify it. But first things first, the
Texans offense just did not look great after that. And
yet I remember this is after they've already lost Stefon Diggs.
So now you turnaround where you're playing the Baltimore Ravens,
(49:02):
short week, short staff, everything short. That's the that's the
key theme of this whole scenario right now for the
Houston Texans.
Speaker 4 (49:09):
Yeah, I really I wish it wasn't that way from
how everything was, how everybody was treating the game that
this obviously took overs. It's totally normal, natural, and I
wouldn't have expected them to think about things any other
way because it was that dramatic and that catastrophic, and
at the time they weren't sure of exactly what the
process would be.
Speaker 3 (49:29):
After the fact, we now know he's going to have
the surgery.
Speaker 4 (49:32):
You now know he has a torn acl But visually speaking,
when you have injuries like that one, and it was
even on the very first view, non replay edition of
what happened to Tank Dell, it was visible there that
the kneecap was dislocated.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
It was not where it was supposed to be. It
was extremely painful.
Speaker 4 (49:50):
When a player makes a play and immediately is pointing
to it is clearly in need of assistance. And then
everybody else with the emotions that they showed. There were
numbers of players there that were in or near tiers,
and CJ. Strout obviously among them. It was pretty easy.
I'm sure you could tell standing next to Joe Mixon
in the locker room that there were some tiers that
had been shed, and I want you to hear some
(50:11):
of what he said in the locker room also.
Speaker 3 (50:15):
But to the football part.
Speaker 4 (50:17):
Of it, it could have been the other way. Granted,
their offense was going to lose something because he's their
second best weapon in the past game, and now you're
going to a group of players who are not weapons.
They just play wide receiver, so it would have been
difficult to do so, and overcoming that is very difficult
to do so, but they just put six points on
(50:38):
the board. They're on their way to maybe doing what
only one other team has done all year. And I
do think there was an additional balloon deflation if the
balloon wasn't already completely deflated. When it will remained seventeen sixteen,
every kicker is going to miss an extra point at
some point with the rule change many years ago, they
decided it was stupid to have an extra point if
(51:01):
everybody was making them at ninety nine point nine nine
success rate. So we'll move it back to an arbitrary distance,
and now teams will miss them with regularity, one or
two a season, even for kickers you would never dream
of letting go. And Kym Fairbhirn is one of those kickers,
and he missed, and now they're still losing, and now
they've got to chase points. And now when they're down
(51:22):
a touchdown, it's eight instead of seven. And when you
do score that tying touchdown, you have to get into
the end zone a second time to tie the game,
because that's what a two point conversion is. I do
think there was an additional trying to overcome it, because
that also happened immediately after they resumed play. But the
football side of it is clear as day. This is
(51:43):
a lesser team. What area of the Texans offense did
we scream the loudest about before the season, Oh, they
have the best wide receiver tree on the NFL. Well
now they don't. Now they have one really good wide
receiver and very little else. And it's not an affront
to John Metchi or Xavier Hutchinson or Jared way And
or Steven Sims or anybody else. We know what they are,
and they do too, and so do the other teams,
(52:03):
and so do the Texans. They might still be able
to have a decent passing game this weekend, next or
Wednesday and next week when they get on the field
against the Titans, but it's certainly not a threatening one,
especially in a year where we're now fifteen games into CJ.
Stroud's second season. His first season lasted fifteen games. I
(52:24):
don't have to do math gymnastics to do a comparison
of CJ. Stroud's production in year one versus year two.
I mean, I can give you all the excuses, and
I can tell you all the reasons, and I probably
prefer to use the word reasons versus excuses.
Speaker 3 (52:40):
But the numbers.
Speaker 4 (52:42):
He's thrown almost the same number of passes four four
ninety five this year. He's got almost the same completion
percentage sixty three point nine as a rookie, sixty three
point two as a second year quarterback. That's pretty much
it for the similarities. Interception percentage doubled, TD percentage down,
(53:05):
success percentage way down, yards per game, way way down.
Sacks way up, sack percentage way up, passer rating way down.
Speaker 2 (53:17):
Yeah. So okay, and I'm glad you brought that up
because at the end of that game, I was I
was tweeting what the Texans offseason is gonna be like that,
and I just said, the most challenging part is going
to be, you know, determining what percentage of CJ. Stroud's
year two regression. And if you doubted there's a regression,
(53:39):
I would submit to you what wex just put out
there from a number standpoint.
Speaker 3 (53:43):
Nine to six and both of those two fifteen game samples.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
Yeah, yeah, I mean and to ten and seven. And
if we're being honest when you're.
Speaker 4 (53:50):
Saying you're trying to determine what's the reason for it
in your analysis of it.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Well, here's if the last part of that is here.
On December twenty first, twenty twenty four, when I'm typing
this inside Arrowhead Stadium, I'm still seventy thirty towards this
awful line. You know, you mentioned his completions and the percentages,
and then you mentioned the sacks try fair, But it's
I mean, I'm not taking any blame away for I'm
(54:15):
giving him thirty percent. I'm not taking blame away from him.
But did the lot you cannot. I've said it, you know,
the analogy with his arm tied behind his back. It's
the best way I can kind of put into words
what I feel like we see every week he's not
playing at full He's not. He doesn't have a full
take of gas. He doesn't have all four wheels on
(54:36):
the Ferrari. He doesn't have I mean, I could go
on and on and on. That is more of a
problem to me than anything he is doing. Brilliant it's
causing his problems.
Speaker 4 (54:45):
It's brilliantly put because it allows for me to jump
in right there. The four wheels aren't on the Ferrari. Yeah,
is he still a Ferrari is the other part of
the question, which doesn't matter at all when you're trying
to to determine the percentage of what the reasons are.
Speaker 3 (55:02):
We can work on CJ. Stroud all we want inside
the building. We can get him a new OC.
Speaker 4 (55:06):
We can buy more parts for his car, and that's
what we're gonna do. But the car that he is.
Whatever he is will never work. If the seventy percent,
and you know it's higher is not being nice. We're
being nice. If the four wheels on the car remain flat,
there's knives in them whatever.
Speaker 2 (55:28):
It could be a pento ye, but it doesn't matter
if there's not four wheels on, whatever it.
Speaker 4 (55:32):
Is, because I'm totally on board with him trading in
the Ferrari that he drove as a rookie for a
much more sensible, not quite as exciting car because that's
probably still accurate. But it doesn't matter what that car
is because it's not going anywhere because the wheels aren't on.
You forgot the lug nuts, you ran over the pit crew,
whatever the case may be. That's priority number one through
fifty this offseason. With other issues, sure, but the offensive
(55:57):
line is the absolute un questioned priority for making this
team a much more viable threat to win big.
Speaker 6 (56:08):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (56:12):
Well, I'm sure that Wex was teasing it all last
week while I was out. I know he was, because
you know what, he's a good soldier. He was telling
you that when it comes down to getting the best
fireworks and the best deals on them. There's only one
place to go to Topdogfireworks dot Com. That is the
website to find all the Top Dog Fireworks locations, the
(56:33):
one closest to you. There's fourteen to choose from. But
you were talking about this being something that's going to
happen soon last week. It's happening now.
Speaker 4 (56:40):
It is on there, open for business, been opened since
the twentieth will run through the beginning of the year,
which means the holiday celebration season with Top Dog Fireworks
is going on with the biggest selection of fireworks at
the best prices. The ultimate holiday giveaway also part of this.
Every location Crown's a winner with a fireworks assortment valued
at five one hundred dollars plus everyone who enders get
(57:02):
a five dollars off coupon. So go to Topdogfireworks dot
Com to enter that. Now, celebrate with a boom at
Top Dog Fireworks.
Speaker 1 (57:13):
Back to Adam Clinton at Adam Wexler on Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (57:25):
Bottom of the hour, we will bring to you the
Christian Walker press conference. We haven't talked a lot about
what happened from the astro standpoint over the break. You know,
I have been able to sleep on it a lot,
by the way, caught up on some sleep last week.
That's a that's always my favorite part of vacation when
I can do it. I have kind of talked myself
(57:47):
into the Astros offer for Alex Bregman was more than fair.
And it's not because I'm trying to take up for
the team versus Alley or anything like that. But here's
a very serious question that has to be asked in
this situation, and if I were Alex Bregman, I would
be asking it of Scott Boris. Why do I not
(58:10):
have all of these other higher offers coming my way?
And why are you forcing me to say no to
twenty six million per basically given my numbers, my slow starts,
even when I'm good versus just average the last couple
of years. Again, all the intangibles are there. We're taking
that off the table.
Speaker 4 (58:29):
Yeah, even though I know you have tremendous respect for
Jeff Passen and Ken Rosenthal and Bob Nightingale and John
Hayman and Joel Sherman and everybody else that covers major
League Baseball brilliantly buster only as well. Oh yeah, are
you sure there aren't other offers just because they haven't
gotten that information and issued it publicly.
Speaker 2 (58:45):
None of them have gotten that information.
Speaker 3 (58:47):
That's what I mean.
Speaker 4 (58:49):
Like, is there a reason why the Astros offer for
their outgoing not signing him free agent was out for
like the fiftieth free agent in a row that they've
lost versus everybody else, Like there's no offer from any
other team?
Speaker 3 (59:05):
Is that a fact? Or is there just no, we
haven't gotten anybody to leak the information.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
That's true. But didn't we hear about multiple offers and
figures and all that kind of stuff with Springer? With
Korea for example, I mean, even with Garrett Cole, even
though we all knew he was going to the Yankees.
Speaker 4 (59:21):
Well, yes, you know all those cases at some point.
But even in Korea's case, the offer, we knew about
the offer before he was even a free agent.
Speaker 3 (59:28):
We knew what they were talking about.
Speaker 4 (59:29):
We knew about these numbers, then we knew more numbers
before again before he hit it, and then when he
ultimately left, we knew, Well, this offer seems low. But
to your point about you know, twenty six million years,
six years.
Speaker 3 (59:40):
It seems reasonable today.
Speaker 4 (59:42):
It absolutely does, and I would be on board with
saying it in a similar fashion that you did. We'll
find out how reasonable it is when he signs, well,
how unreasonable the offer he's takes is. Yeah, if he's
forced to go the route that other Boris clients have
recently where he ultimately didn't get what he wanted to
sign for long term, so he's to have to try
to have another walk year, you know, whether free agent
(01:00:05):
year by signing a contract with options or ultimate. I mean,
I can't imagine he's signing anywhere for one year. He
might sign a three year deal where it's an optionaire
on year two.
Speaker 2 (01:00:14):
Anchor Buehler did, that is a sneaky m I hate that.
That is bad. As you said last week, I peaked
in they're one of the teams in the way the
Red Sox are going to be.
Speaker 3 (01:00:25):
And did you like how I quotes sweeted that Bueler signing.
Speaker 2 (01:00:28):
No, I didn't see that one of the local or
one of the Yahoo writers have the story first, so
I grabbed his comment twenty one and a half million
four or twenty one point five million, I believe for
Walker Bueller on a one year deal a little Red
Sox so I quote tweeted and said Red Sox add
two free agent Comma two time World Series champion dot
dot dot Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:00:49):
Well not Alex Bregman Yet. How much did he just
Walker Bueller and his two World Series championship?
Speaker 2 (01:00:55):
How much did the Angels waist on Kakuchi? Because I'll
never do anything while he's there per year.
Speaker 4 (01:01:00):
The information he got from the Astros is not proprietary.
Speaker 3 (01:01:04):
He can take it with him.
Speaker 4 (01:01:05):
He's allowed to tell them, hey, I should throw this
pitch more like I just I know that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:10):
But then then his lineup goes to battery. Yeah, so
essentially the same money.
Speaker 3 (01:01:15):
He might be good. Yeah, he might be, but it's.
Speaker 2 (01:01:17):
Not gonna matter show Heyo Tani was really good there too,
and what did that get him? Nothing? And then he
went across the world seriod, not with Anaheim. So okay,
I'm actually like this is there's a couple of things
here with what you said about you know, Alex Bregman,
Like the dirty not so secret of this whole thing
is that Springer, even at a more advanced age and
(01:01:40):
Korea did not have question marks about their trajectory doing
this for the TV viewers like Alex Bregman does A
and B. I'm far more upset about the fact that
the Astros seem to be pretty comfortable saying, hey, this
is our crappy outfield going into twenty two twenty five.
(01:02:01):
Then you know, letting Alex Bregman walk when you've got
East Sock Parades to play third base and you have
a guy who's probably gonna hit forty bombs to the
Crawford boxes playing first base. Wow, yeah, I said it,
like I have a far more problem with that. Like
I get it. It sucks Alex Bregman. The intangibles are
there that Christian Walker can't bring that here. East Sock
(01:02:21):
Parades can't bring it here. Alex Bregman is Alex Bregmany's
one of one when it comes to that kind of stuff.
But it doesn't mean that they can't win if these
guys play the corner infild. Your corner infield is already
better than it was last year, simply because John Singleton's
not starting at first base. And I love Big John,
I love his bat flips, but he's not Christian Walker.
But your outfield, oh my god, it's awful. It's so
(01:02:45):
bad right now, like it's eighty wins bad. That's how
I feel about it. Because with your pitching it's good,
but you don't you haven't made certain decisions on your
rotation justin Verlander's not one of them. Like you said
last week, Oh, I heard a lot of that, and
uh it was Thursday that I peaked in the most obviously.
But you know, in addition to Verlander not being as
(01:03:07):
good last year and probably not being a part of
things this year upcoming, you don't have Kokuchi and you
didn't sign Walker Buehler because the Red Sox did that.
And I'm not asking you to go out and pay
twenty one per for a starter, but I mean, if
we're to believe how you do things, because that's what
you your track record is, Jim Crane, you're not just
resigning Fromber after this year. You're probably gonna try and
(01:03:30):
trade him, right I don't think they're The season is
going in well. If they're trading him in season, well,
watching out the Tigers trade Jack Flaherty away and still
make the playoffs and beat the Astros. I don't think
the Astros will be doing that in season because.
Speaker 4 (01:03:48):
Right now they're already at a point where there's nothing
for them to do this offseason to offset trading Fromber.
This offseason unless they really don't want to win, which
I think the signing of Christian Walker suggests they do.
Speaker 2 (01:04:01):
Yeah, but they're a fielding of the outfield as it stands.
Speaker 4 (01:04:04):
Done yet they're done with splashy signings. But I doubt,
very seriously, we're gonna be watching a lot of Astros
games with the three current projected.
Speaker 2 (01:04:14):
Myers and the carcass of Chas McCormick does not. It
doesn't scream sexy to me.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
It isn't. It's probably does you want to go home with.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
It doesn't even scream substandard to me. It's bad before
there's very bad.
Speaker 4 (01:04:30):
It could easily be the worst out offensive outfield in
baseball if you gave them one hundred and fifty starts,
which the Astros aren't planning on doing.
Speaker 2 (01:04:37):
Okay, so who's getting the starts?
Speaker 4 (01:04:38):
Players that aren't here or players that are Jacob Melton
or Cam Smith just certainly not that trio for the
majority of the season. That makes no sense unless they
you're fine with it once they prove us sitting here wrong.
I mean, if they go out there, if given the
opportunity I hope they do, that might not even be
They might not even be given the opportunity because presumably,
(01:05:00):
like Elo Jimenez, signed a deal today, a minor league
contract to prove that he could help a major league team,
because for the last several seasons he's only proven that
he can get hurt. Those are the types of as
bad as that sounds, those are the types of players
that are going to be given opportunities. I think here too,
I'm surprised a player like that wasn't their guy because
it doesn't cost you a whole lot of money. It
(01:05:20):
doesn't really cost you anything. When they don't play or
they show that they don't belong there, it's just a
missed opportunity. But they're not as naive as we're trying
to paint them as. And I know Dana Brown said it.
He might even say it again today when introducing Christian
Walker when asked about what else there is to do.
But that's who's here. They're on the roster, they are astros,
they're major league players. I can't tell you Jacob Melton's
(01:05:42):
starting in our outfield because I don't believe it. If
I'm Dana, he can't say that it might be true
in May, it might be true in April.
Speaker 2 (01:05:49):
If it is in May. If it is in April,
oh my gosh, how much worse was it than we thought.
Speaker 3 (01:05:54):
It might be? There?
Speaker 4 (01:05:55):
For he might be in the same outfield the same
day that Wan Soto plays at Diikin Park for the
first time.
Speaker 2 (01:06:00):
Here's the thing, Like du Bond's fine, he's a utility guy.
You need a guy like that on your team. He
shouldn't be your starting left fielder for a number of reasons. Why,
by the way, on out there and let Victor find
his way into the lineup somewhere. Victor, Yeah, well, I
was gonna I was gonna send Vic over to first,
but I forgot that Chris was there. Chris, you're gonna
(01:06:22):
call him Chris now Vick, Well, he's at least been
here a while. Yea, No, Look, Christian Walker is a
great signing, especially for My favorite part of the signing
was how upset Yankees fans were about it.
Speaker 3 (01:06:36):
Wait, they guy him for what they have Paul Goldschmidt, He's.
Speaker 2 (01:06:40):
Gonna die at first base this year in a game.
That's how old that guy is figuratively speaking. But yeah,
I mean that's great, but your outfield, and yeah, what.
Speaker 3 (01:06:52):
If you're already up five to nothing. By this time
you get to pain you, he'll be fine.
Speaker 4 (01:06:56):
Right Janer hits a two run homer after Walker hit,
or after Jordan hit a three year on homer.
Speaker 2 (01:07:01):
There is something to be said for jan Or taking
that next step this year. But Paaniah, Jake Myers like
these guys, it's.
Speaker 3 (01:07:09):
Really run those balls down in center field.
Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
Dude, great you had a guy that could do that,
and oh, by the way, was fantastic offensively, and then
you wave goodbye. Look all these guys that they've let walk,
they've probably made the right decision. And I hate to
say this, I hope Bregman's that guy.
Speaker 4 (01:07:28):
Yeah, this this offseason is always going to feel different, though,
because instead of just letting Springer, Correa, Verlander, Cole whomever, walk,
you can trade a Kayucker. You've acknowledged where you are
with your desire to offer a contract that multiple other
competing big money teams do offer you don't.
Speaker 2 (01:07:49):
Which, by the way, that was the right decision because
he's going to make a massive amount of money.
Speaker 4 (01:07:54):
Why can't you be the team to pay it? Because
you're Jim Crane, We'll see that's that's still part of me. Well,
I know why school these other teams will they have
chosen not to Christian Walker the Astro. We look forward
to bringing you the introductor your press conference next.

you got the day off. I know you're enjoying that day.
You can go on tailgate with your ice cold refreshing

I guess they could say easy to Wednesday, but they
really say easy to Sunday, easy to enjoy.
Speaker 3 (01:08:45):
That's bud Light.

Hey, it's running Brown touch every ass game on Sports

The iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (01:08:55):
Home of your Astros.
Speaker 4 (01:08:59):
Should be sending out to Minute Made Park shortly as
the Astros are just about set to introduce their new
first baseman of the two of three years sixty million
for Christian Walker. Amidst their release, we already knew it
was a great defensive player. Three consecutive gold gloves over
the National League more runs saved at first base by
a lot over any other first basement in Major League Baseball.
(01:09:23):
And yes, we talked about that last week when this
deal was reported. I think in addition to some other things,
they were a little unhappy about the defense over at
first base.
Speaker 3 (01:09:32):
Let's get you over to Minute Made Park.
Speaker 4 (01:09:33):
Hello to new Astros first base from Christian Walker right
here on your flagship station for Astros Baseball Sports Talk
seven to ninety of course on the television side Space
City Home Network.
Speaker 11 (01:09:45):
Andrew, Hello, everybody.
Speaker 12 (01:09:48):
Today, we Houston Astros signed Christian Walker to a three
year deal. In our pursuit to maintain a team that's
going to be at the top of the division, we
pursue guys that have really good ability to hit and
have power and defense. And we're excited about signing Christian
(01:10:09):
And you know when you when you make this type
of signing, you know it's exciting for the organization. We're
all fired up because we're we're at in the bat
that we could put right in the middle of the lineup.
It's a plug and play and we're really thrilled that,
you know, we got them. We welcome them here to Houston. Uh,
this is gonna be a wonderful place for him to play.
Speaker 8 (01:10:30):
We love it.
Speaker 12 (01:10:31):
We we we we love winning here and we love
we were glad that you're a big part of this
and Amanda, we appreciate you coming today and we appreciate
having you too. Welcome to Houston.
Speaker 5 (01:10:43):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (01:10:43):
I think you're gonna love this family here. This is
a family of winning. We care and we love baseball
around here.
Speaker 5 (01:10:54):
All right, sir.
Speaker 3 (01:10:57):
Part of the press conference.
Speaker 4 (01:10:59):
You're viewing our simulcast with Space City Home Network where
the jersey is being shown, and you will notice new
number for Christian Walker fifty three with the Diamondbacks, thirteen
with the Astros.
Speaker 2 (01:11:13):
Who's the best Astra to ever wear thirteen? It's a
Matt Thomas question.
Speaker 4 (01:11:17):
Well, if I'm not mistaken, even though we rarely see it.
Alexi Centron may have worn the jersey number thirteen.
Speaker 2 (01:11:24):
Oh on his costume.
Speaker 4 (01:11:26):
Yes, But Christian Walker eight years with the Arizona Diamondbacks,
last three years an ops of eight thirteen combined at
ninety six home runs over that period of time, a
career best of thirty six coming within that timeframe. As
well being introduced as a new member of the Astros
a three year deal announced today by the Astros to
(01:11:46):
join here. We've had reports about some parameters of that
deal beyond the sixty million, a partial no trade clause
involved in that which has been quite a topic of
conversation this offseason.
Speaker 3 (01:11:57):
He's now ready to address us here in Houston.
Speaker 13 (01:12:02):
Over to start with Chandlin and over to h Randy, Hey, Christian, welcome.
Understanding the money and years kind of went out at
the end of the day. But uh, they added Tony
Paris Chica this offseason. I guess can you describe kind
of what he meant to you in Arizona and how
much you're looking forward to working with him here.
Speaker 6 (01:12:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:12:21):
I would say that that Tony has changed my career
for sure, crossing paths with him. I guess it was
maybe seven years ago. You know, instant credibility when when
you're coaching guys like Paul gold Schmidt and nick I
d in the infield, So it was easy to start
listening to him from the jump. But yeah, he's a
big reason why my defense is the way it is.
(01:12:44):
I'm I'm very excited to work with him again, and
I think it's a great move bringing him on board.
He he.
Speaker 5 (01:12:48):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (01:12:49):
He makes a difference when when you know, you think
about moving the needle on a team, but you know
a defense and an infield he's uh, he's the guy
you want for sure. Yeah, welcome to Houston.
Speaker 14 (01:13:03):
Thoughts on from AFAR watching this organization, the track record
they've had over the last decade. Uh, what attracted your
most to what they've done here, what they've been able
accomplished and the players that that got in place already
to keep this thing going.
Speaker 6 (01:13:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:13:15):
Absolutely. You know the word you hear a lot is culture.
You know, for me, that that's that's knowing how to win,
that's being used to winning, that's expecting to win. But
but there's this other angle of of playing with an edge.
You know, when you're out in the field and you're
looking at the energy and opposing dugout, you can tell
when teams have it or don't. And you know, I've
(01:13:36):
been I've been watching this this team for a while now,
and you know that edge, the energy, the the expectation.
You can tell that they're going out there, you know,
with a standard and I'm very excited to be a
part of it. A Christian will Cockle here with Fox
First of all, welcome to Texas.
Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
Man.
Speaker 7 (01:13:53):
Did you get to talk to any of the guys
throughout the process here that are on the team, and
if so, who would you talk to? What they say
about maybe a sales witch. Yeah, honestly, you know, there
there wasn't much sales pitch needed. You know, we're we're
very excited from from the jump. I crossed paths with
with Hater way back in the day. We came up
with Baltimore together and so so we were teammates in
(01:14:14):
low A at one point. So he reached out, the
Lance reached out pretty immediately, all all the staff, all
the coaches. You know, it's been it's been great. It's
been nothing but but Warren welcomes. But yeah, honestly, there
there wasn't much convincing needed at all. We were excited
right from the get go.
Speaker 2 (01:14:33):
Thank Christian.
Speaker 3 (01:14:34):
Just what made this a good fit?
Speaker 10 (01:14:35):
What were your priorities I guess going into the free
agency and what made this a good fit for you?
Speaker 5 (01:14:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (01:14:39):
Absolutely, you know, wanting to win for sure, that that
was That was it. I feel like approaching free agency,
it's it's it's pretty unpredictable at times, so so feeling
like you had a decision to make. You know, it's
it's exciting, and there's a lot that comes into it,
but you know, at the end of the day, showing
up to a clubhouse where you win, it makes everything
better of you know, I've experienced the other side of
(01:15:02):
that at times, and you know that that energy is
is it can be weird. So you know, to come
up to the ballpark every day and and you know
there's a standard and and you know what you're getting.
You know what to expect, you know, from from a
fan base, from your teammates, from your staff. It's it's uh,
it's it's everything that we were looking for. Checked a
(01:15:23):
lot of boxes for us.
Speaker 2 (01:15:28):
Christian.
Speaker 13 (01:15:28):
I don't know how hands on you were in the process,
but when did the Astros reach out and just given
kind of they've been doing a lot of different things
this winter, were you at all surprised to hear from them?
Speaker 5 (01:15:38):
Uh?
Speaker 11 (01:15:38):
Surprise, No, No, I think for you know, once once
free agency was you know, approaching a man and I
this this was one of our teams that that we
were hoping, you know, it would work out with for
for a while now, and I think it happened pretty quick.
(01:15:59):
You know there was they were circling. It's this is
my first time going through free agency, so I didn't
really know what to expect. But you know, it's it's circling, circling, circling,
and then you know it's it's real interest and it
happens quick. We had some momentum. We wanted to get
it done. They wanted to get it done. It was
it was a no brainer.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
Jason Bristol kh ow U CBS Houston. Are your thoughts
on the short porch and left or does it matter?
Speaker 11 (01:16:27):
You know, I guess it doesn't matter. Try not to
change who I am at the plate, but very excited
about that short porch. You know, playing and chase for
so long, it's it's a big park and this can
be at times too. But yeah, I think I think
the the atmosphere on the field as an opposing player
is it's fun to play and it's it's a challenge.
You know, the crowd gets loud, it's an intimate environment.
(01:16:50):
The roof, you know, it makes it loud, and you
know that that porch out there is is tempting for sure.
I'm I'm uh, I'm excited.
Speaker 15 (01:17:00):
Hey, Dana, with the issues you guys have had at
first base over the past couple of years. How big
and important is it to get a player of his
caliber to come in here and kind of provide some
stability at that position.
Speaker 5 (01:17:12):
Yeah. Absolutely.
Speaker 12 (01:17:13):
You know, one of the things we from a valuation standpoint,
we knew we had to get better at first base,
and so, you know, we look at the scouting side
and the data side and information, and then we also
looked at the human being, and we knew that he
was a special human being and he could check the
box of looking good to the scouting eye, and he
could check the box with all the data and information,
(01:17:34):
and so we knew that he would fulfill all of that,
and so we pursued him. And we're excited to have
him because we know that we're going to have a
really good first base frien that could defend and also
hit the ball in the seats from time to time,
and he knows how to run the bases and do
a lot of the little things the right way too,
So and I think he's bringing some leadership to the
(01:17:54):
ball club as well. So we're excited to have him.
Speaker 13 (01:17:57):
Thank Yeah, Dana. Obviously, his bat speaks for itself, but
can you speak to his defense and kind of what
you guys, what you see in him defensively and how
he'll help the right side of yournfield.
Speaker 12 (01:18:12):
Yeah, I mean I was watching video and I was
getting excited, so I started to laugh a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:18:16):
And so.
Speaker 12 (01:18:18):
You know, one of the things I always tell our guys,
if you don't catch the ball, you don't go home
at night because the games are long. And so I'm
a big stickler about defense. You know, I preach it
all the time. And you got to catch the baseball
and you can't give good Major league teams a lot
of outs. And so, you know, getting a guy like Christian,
(01:18:38):
you know, I think it's going to take our team
to another level. I think, you know, his defense. You know,
we've been missing that at first base. I think we've
been at the bottom, and now you know, we're getting
a guy that's been at the top. So hopefully he
could pull us up and keep things going in the
right direction here.
Speaker 16 (01:18:56):
All right, and Christian or Alexander from NBC here in Houston,
what what's sort of your Dana Mension leadership as part
of what you bring, what is sort of your leadership
style and how do you you know, expect to kind
of fit into the clubhouse knowing a few of the
guys that you know, and then in terms of learning
about some of the players that you'll play with.
Speaker 11 (01:19:15):
Yeah, I'm very excited to get to know my teammates.
Speaker 5 (01:19:18):
You know.
Speaker 11 (01:19:18):
The the easy answer is, I guess the lead by
example type of type of mentality. I take the game
very seriously. I take my preparation very seriously. You know,
I understand everybody has a different angle. Everybody prepares in
their own way, and I respect that for sure. But
at the end of the day, you know, I want
my teammates to be the best version of themselves and
(01:19:39):
I owe it to them to to do that to them. So,
you know, preparation is key for me. And I think,
you know, we're all really good at what we do.
And if we can prepare the right way every day
and you know, be good teammates to each other and
treat each other the right way and treat the game
the right way, you know, I don't think we can lose.
Speaker 16 (01:20:02):
Hey, Christian, Dana talked a little bit about your defense,
But in your mind, what makes you such a solid
first basement?
Speaker 11 (01:20:10):
You know, first base is uh it's it's it's a
small part of what's happening on that play, you know,
the ground ball gets hit to one of my infielders.
You know, I'm on the back end of that. And
if if I can be there and and and give
them comfort and confidence. You know, when when my shortstop
blaze out in the hole and he's got to throw
from his knees, I don't want him to have to
worry about making a perfect throw. And you know, you know,
(01:20:33):
turn and let it rip and I'll be there for you.
I got your back.
Speaker 6 (01:20:36):
You know.
Speaker 11 (01:20:36):
I pride myself on picking my guys up. And you know,
whether it's a pitcher or an infielder, you know, for me,
it's it's it's making sure my teammates have have good games,
good years and and can be the best version of themselves.
Speaker 15 (01:20:53):
Christian, you know, and you mentioned why you wanted to
come here because of the team, But do you know
much about the city itself? And are you looking forward
to anything but ticular about living here.
Speaker 11 (01:21:02):
I don't know much about the city. I'm most excited
for the food. I love to eat. I love to cook.
The barbecue scene has me has me very interested, but
very very much looking forward to to learning about the city,
and Houston's one of those cities, right, h Town. It's it.
It fires me up to be a part of it
and get to know it.
Speaker 5 (01:21:25):
Other questions.
Speaker 8 (01:21:28):
Christ right here, Christen, just curious your perspective on a
player like Josel TV, who's been the foundational piece of
this organization. Watching him from afar now getting to be
his teammate, just kind of thoughts on him.
Speaker 11 (01:21:44):
Yeah, there's there's something special about somebody who can play
this game at a high level for so long and
it's so consistent that that fascinates me. I want to know,
you know, his mentality. I want to know, right the
motivation all of it. It's it's obviously the skill and
(01:22:05):
the ability to hit and compete and be a leader
on this team. That's that's had a lot of success.
But you know, I get a chance to learn from
jose L two. Nothing really gets better than that.
Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
Christian Walker introduced as the newest Astro three year deal,
is going to play first base. He heard a little
bit from him and from the general manager Dana brown
Moore coming from that. We'll bring that all to you
as we continue here, and of course, right there all
over these Sports Talks seven to ninety sites and via
the iHeartRadio app as well.
Speaker 3 (01:22:35):

Here back to the eighteen with the Adams, Adam Wessler
and Adam Clanton on Sports Talk seven to ninety, Houston's
home of Longhorn Football.
Speaker 2 (01:23:36):
Still awaiting any questions from the media about Alex Bregman.
Speaker 4 (01:23:41):
There weren't anything we did, not really truly duck out
too early.
Speaker 2 (01:23:45):
Hey, Christian, welcome to Houston. What's it going to be
like never having Alex Bregman throw to you? At first,
I'll hang up and listen.
Speaker 3 (01:23:52):
It was a very pro signing press conference.
Speaker 4 (01:23:55):
Understandably so they usually are, but obviously, as we got
news of that last week, it certainly seemed to signal
the start of a new era. I mean, the Astros
infield moving forward will have Christian Walker, he's Ocprettis, Jeremy
Pania and Jose Altuve and obviously the third basement outgoing
has still not found a home yet.
Speaker 2 (01:24:14):
Well hold that thought. Okay, uh, first person I saw
tweet it will conkle. This is obviously the scrum. See
for those of you who don't know how this works,
they put the table out there, they do the jersey,
and they ask all the questions.
Speaker 4 (01:24:27):
Let's see, we've got a Sports Talk seven ninety post
and then see Dana Brown there.
Speaker 2 (01:24:31):
The real questions get asked. And yeah, I mean, if
Dan just wants to pull up that audio off of
we can just play it straight off of these Sports
Talk seven ninety eight cars. After all, right, it's not
like it's anybody else's there is a definitive answer on
why Alex Bregman definitely will not be playing for the Astros.
At least based on this answer, I would.
Speaker 13 (01:24:57):
Suggest that this week he shuts the door on any
possibility out break up.
Speaker 3 (01:25:01):
Is that how you got?
Speaker 2 (01:25:02):
Like, how do you guys view that now? Yeah?
Speaker 12 (01:25:04):
So the way I view it right now, it's Pettis
is going to play third base and Walker is going
to play first base, and uh, you know Bregman is
still a free agent that you.
Speaker 13 (01:25:13):
Guys make another offer him with fist. I guess where
where did you guys going to do?
Speaker 11 (01:25:19):
She was?
Speaker 13 (01:25:20):
Did you guys have?
Speaker 6 (01:25:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (01:25:22):
I think the negotiations stalled. You know, I won't I
won't get into specifics, but I feel like the negotiation installed.
I thought we made a really competitive offer and you know,
showing that we you know, we wanted them back, you know,
but we had to pursue other options. You know, we
couldn't just sit there, so you know, we started to
(01:25:44):
you know, we we locked in Perettis early in that trade,
knowing that he could play third or first, and then
when the opportunity to add another bat uh came up,
you know, we just jumped on it. I felt like
we were losing two bats that hit between two and five,
and so getting Perettis and Walker back, we added two
more bats that's gonna get between.
Speaker 8 (01:26:05):
Two and five.
Speaker 2 (01:26:06):
All right, let me go ahead and translate that for you. Ready. Yeah,
so we already had Estac Perettis, So there's your backup plan.
He he was not some of the lesser names that
were attached to us, Orgy Plonco, and he was available
when we got him in house. Then we decided, we
(01:26:27):
said to ourselvesselves, we are not going to lose out
on Christian Walker because we're waiting around while Scott Boris
drags his heels and tries to drive up the price,
and we're not going to pay him more than twenty
six million dollars a year. So we are going to
go ahead and get Christian Walker while Boris for the
umpteenth time, has alienated a client. And I don't even
(01:26:49):
know why these guys that signed with him, it's it's
fascinating to me, or I guess these guys that are
with him, it's fascinating to me. And by the way,
we didn't get the uh, we didn't get the jose
Al Tuo Vey mandate, which is that I want to
be here, make it happen. So now Alex Bragman will
play in Boston or wherever. The A on Sports Talk
seven ninety You know what goes great with a brand
(01:27:12):
new first basement on your baseball team, Daisy's newest dip addiction.
Because you're gonna be watching those baseball games before you
know it, and you're gonna be eating chips and wings
and veggies and everything else. Why not combine them with
the brand new French onion and ranch dips from Daisy
Sour Cream. They are a game changer, like getting a
new first basement, and they're as good as homemade dip.
(01:27:34):
They have all real herbs and spices and ingredients you'd
find in your own kitchen, and they're already mixed up
for you so you don't have to do that. It's
the brand new Daisy Dips, the French onion and ranch
dips from Daisy Sour Cream.
Speaker 1 (01:27:48):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Team
Who Series, Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the Team A.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
Team final hour of the A Team here on an
abbreviated edition of the program. It's a Monday, after a
Texans loss in Kansas City, after a Rockets win out
of the country, and after the Astros officially make it
official with the introduction of Christian Walker their brand new
(01:28:22):
first basement. When's the East Soak Praidies press conference? Wex
when's that scheduled?
Speaker 4 (01:28:28):
We have heard from some of those involved. There have
been a couple of zoom calls, and we had astro Line,
a special edition of astro Line.
Speaker 3 (01:28:35):
This past week.
Speaker 4 (01:28:37):
Steve Sparks had a truly very informative and entertaining conversation
with Hayden Wisnewsky.
Speaker 2 (01:28:45):
I had no doubt it would be entertaining and it
could have handed traveling the world enough this offseason to
give us that content.
Speaker 5 (01:28:54):
Well.
Speaker 4 (01:28:54):
He talked a lot about how he became the picture
that he was. Clearly everybody wants to hear a little
bit about his path through the Cypress area where he
grew up.
Speaker 3 (01:29:03):
Asked him about that.
Speaker 4 (01:29:04):
He goes, I went to this elementary school, I went
to this high school or this junior high.
Speaker 3 (01:29:08):
I believe he said junior high. He might have said
middle school.
Speaker 2 (01:29:11):
See high, because I went to Blile Junior High. But
my stepdaughter is like.
Speaker 3 (01:29:16):
It's middle school, right, it is different.
Speaker 4 (01:29:17):
And then obviously he went on through high school, sam
and everything. But there's a good conversation about some of
his pitches, a really good conversation about who he has
leaned on. He told a story about somebody and I
think I'm trying to remember where it was presented to him.
I think it was his college manager, his coach who said,
(01:29:41):
I want you to look at this and how this
guy throws and what he does with his arm.
Speaker 3 (01:29:46):
Angle and his slot and everything.
Speaker 4 (01:29:48):
And it was Charlie Morton as an astro, and so
this he shook, this is I can't I know. I said, well,
I might as well try it. And it worked for me,
and that's what I've been doing. So there's there.
Speaker 2 (01:29:58):
There's a considered a groundball picture.
Speaker 4 (01:30:00):
Well, he's considered someone who had to learn that he
as he made it through a couple of organizations, the
Yankees first and the Cubs the next.
Speaker 3 (01:30:07):
Now the Astros.
Speaker 4 (01:30:08):
You can already hear what the Astros are going to
tell him when he starts to work on the things
they wanted to work on. He described, well, I've got
this pitch, and you know, they said well, it's it's
pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:30:18):
You should throw it more.
Speaker 4 (01:30:19):
Then I got to the new team and they're like, well,
you should throw it even more, and so then he'll
be here and it's the same kind. He has an
arsenal where maybe if the pitch selection and the sequencing
and changing the shape of that pitch, if you have one,
and you say Kokuchi had several, well that's maximize those.
We're not telling we're not making you a different pitcher.
(01:30:39):
We're taking advantage of what you offer and making you
a better pitcher because you're already you already are that,
you just haven't been utilizing it the way your teams
should have been telling you to do.
Speaker 2 (01:30:50):
I'm convinced that any pitcher could come to Houston and
instantly become better.
Speaker 4 (01:30:58):
Well, we didn't need to put a rap on the
commonsation about the Astros. There's actually pretty good stuff from
Dana Brown we need to get into also. But the
two days out from Texans Ravens. It's Wednesday here at
NRG Stadium. I do think it is the main act,
but technically it's the opening act for Beyonce, and to
that end, we are going to talk about this matchup.
(01:31:18):
But appreciate our guest Alex Glaze joining us from Baltimore,
and this is a game that certainly has a lot
on the line. We appreciate you joining us here and
sorry for the delay. The Texans have clinched their division,
the Ravens have clinched a playoff spot, and we seem
convinced this is the first of two meetings because they're
(01:31:39):
going to meet in the first round in Houston of
the postseason. Is it hard to shake that feeling as
they get ready for this Wednesday game?
Speaker 2 (01:31:48):
You could meet in Houston in the first round.
Speaker 4 (01:31:50):
Well, that meaning that the Ravens would unfortunately not win
their division because the Texans would be the division team
winner at home.
Speaker 2 (01:31:58):
Absolutely no.
Speaker 10 (01:31:58):
First, first of all, thanks guys for having me on,
really appreciate it. I think that if the Ravens have
it their way, you know, they're they're just focused on
on winning out at this point, and it obviously starts
with with Houston, they still have a shot at winning
the division even if they went out. I think it
would just come down to I mean, the Steelers also
(01:32:21):
would need to win out as well, so that that
game at one o'clock game on Christmas as big as
well with the Steelers being in Kansas City.
Speaker 3 (01:32:28):
But now this is gonna be a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:32:30):
You know, this has been a.
Speaker 10 (01:32:32):
Grind out, you know, a couple of couple of days,
eleven days for for all teams involved here, you know,
three games in eleven days.
Speaker 3 (01:32:39):
So the NFL did.
Speaker 2 (01:32:40):
These guys no favor.
Speaker 10 (01:32:41):
But Christmas Day, I mean, we're gonna see these guys
line up and we're gonna see ya who's ready to
handle business.
Speaker 2 (01:32:46):
I know there's a lot going into this, especially in
a quick turnaround, but we all have the burning question
in our minds right now, so we need to just
get the answer from you. Who won the trade Deontay
Johnson or Steven Simms.
Speaker 10 (01:33:00):
Oh Man, I mean, what a disaster of a trade for.
I mean, there's really no other way too to put it.
Deontay Johnson's the guy that the Ravens really didn't need
when they when they traded for him back in October.
And I mean I tweeted out, you know, it kind
of gave me pause a little bit because the one
play that stood out to me, or that stands out
(01:33:21):
to me from Deontay Johnson's career is you know him
quitting in the middle of a play when he was
with in Pittsburgh, and it's just kind of that doesn't
fit the culture here in Baltimore. And you know, is
the guy that obviously has talent, you know, had a
lot of success early on in his career, but you know,
it's kind of been known to be a problem. And
(01:33:43):
we really only got to speak to him one time
and seems like a nice guy, but obviously behind closed doors,
there's there's some issues there. But with the need that
you guys have now with the Tank Dell situation, makes
sense to go out and get a guy who, you know,
take a flyer, guy who obviously has had success in
this league before, but he's had issues everywhere he goes.
Speaker 11 (01:34:05):
So I don't know how that's gonna work out.
Speaker 4 (01:34:06):
Yeah, I feel like he could tell the Texans anything
he knows about the Ravens offense the next couple of days.
Speaker 3 (01:34:11):
It wouldn't really matter. Everybody knows about the Ravens offense.
Speaker 4 (01:34:14):
The problem is stopping it because Lamar Jackson is impossible,
and putting Derrick Henry in the backfield with him has
proven to be incredibly productive. As I think most of
us certainly here in Houston, we thought it would be.
We actually had this conversation today on the show, as
we've watched the Ravens change only slightly during the Lamar
Jackson years because of what he provides offensively, but defensively
(01:34:36):
is where the bigger shift has been. How would you
categorize this twenty twenty four version of the Ravens. Is
this the best team that Lamar has taken to the
playoffs as a whole? Or is it merely comparable and
maybe not quite as strong as some previous teams. No?
Speaker 10 (01:34:51):
Absolutely, I think this is by far the strongest roster
that you know, Lamar has had top to bottom, especially offensively.
You know, obviously this past offseason they lost some key
guys on the defensive side of the ball, you know,
you know, Patrick Queen, Geno Stone, guys that were big
contributors to the defense, and having to fill those holes
(01:35:12):
wasn't easy and it took a little.
Speaker 2 (01:35:13):
Bit of time to figure out.
Speaker 10 (01:35:14):
So defense, you know, if we're looking at that side
of the ball, they've come a long way from where
for a number of different reasons, from where they were
at the beginning of the season. But you know, offensively,
I mean you had Derrick Henry to the mix.
Speaker 2 (01:35:28):
It's just I mean, it's.
Speaker 10 (01:35:30):
It's planning out, it's paying out play excuse me, panning
out exactly how I think everyone in Baltimore in that
Ravens facility imagined it.
Speaker 2 (01:35:40):
Would it would play out. I'm interested to hear somebody
from the outside perspective on this sophomore campaign from c J.
Stroud because I think it's maybe low hanging fruit or
maybe easy for a lot of people to say, ah,
he's regressed and sophomore slump, all that kind of stuff
and maybe not pay attention to, for example, the offensive
line in front of him. What do you think about
(01:36:01):
c J. Stroud nearly the end of year two? Yeah,
I think c J. Stroud proved last year.
Speaker 10 (01:36:08):
He's an incredible talent.
Speaker 6 (01:36:09):
I mean, you and.
Speaker 10 (01:36:10):
The Texans have a quarterback, there's no question about that.
Maybe a little bit of regression this year from just
my perspective, but that could be for a number of
different reasons. Like you said, offensive line, you know, dealing
with you know, injuries, you know, Nico Collins going down.
Speaker 2 (01:36:26):
That's obviously a big deal now.
Speaker 10 (01:36:28):
Tank Dell, but you know, the big thing for me,
I think adding Joe Mixon also changed things for the
offense as well for you guys, and you know we're
talking about there Kenry here in Baltimore.
Speaker 11 (01:36:40):
Joe Mixon just.
Speaker 2 (01:36:42):
A big deal to add him down in Houston.
Speaker 17 (01:36:44):
So I think maybe we're seeing a little bit of
a running back renaissance.
Speaker 11 (01:36:46):
Maybe, but no, I think C. J.
Speaker 2 (01:36:48):
Stroud is an incredible talent.
Speaker 10 (01:36:51):
He's a problem you have to you know, He's one
of those guys that they can beat you.
Speaker 17 (01:36:56):
So the Ravens defense definitely has their handful for Wednesday.
Speaker 4 (01:37:00):
It's gonna be a big topic throughout the final two
weeks regardless of I think most everything on the outside,
and I do think it's a two person race at
this point between Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Do you
think people are blind or confused or oblivious to the
kind of season that Lamar Jackson is having in that
it seems like a foregone conclusion. And Vegas is saying
(01:37:20):
the same thing that this is just Josh Allen's MVP
and Lamar's not having one of the greatest seasons in
the history of NFL quarterback play.
Speaker 17 (01:37:28):
It's very interesting to me because it'd be very easy
for me to just kind of have you know, my
Baltimore blinders on and just you know, go the MB
three campaign, Lamar all this and that. But he really
is putting together one of the best seasons we've ever
seen from a quarterback. And I don't know if it's
(01:37:48):
Lamar fatigue.
Speaker 10 (01:37:50):
I don't know if it is him not playing on
enough primetime games, because it seems like Josh Allen, you know,
there was like a five week stretch where he's getting
those you know, standalone four o'clock games or the primetime
games and he's having those special moments. So maybe that's it,
but I really don't. It's very interesting to me because
(01:38:10):
I'm like, maybe I'm missing something when it comes to
Josh Allen. But then I watched yesterday and I'm like, no,
that's you know, that's the Josh Allen game.
Speaker 3 (01:38:18):
To Baltimore, and you know, I don't know what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:38:23):
I must be missing something though.
Speaker 5 (01:38:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:38:25):
I'm trying to be as truthful about it as we
talk through it here as an outsider perspective, but it's
a very interesting conversation that's run throughout this whole season.
Wish we had a little bit more time with you, Alex,
and really appreciate you carving out some for our audience today.
Look forward to the game on Wednesday, and I really appreciate.
Speaker 3 (01:38:41):
You join us.
Speaker 11 (01:38:43):
Appreciate you guys. Merry Christmas.
Speaker 4 (01:38:44):
Same to you, Alex Glaze joining us from wjy Z
in Baltimore. Josh Allen leads the NFL in QBR and
I'm a very very very small believer in that particular statistic.
Lamar Jackson also leads the league in touchdown percentage and
yards per attempt, an average yards per attempt and passer
(01:39:06):
rating and in a number of different categories, and that
passer rating it's the fourth best figure ever in the
history of the NFL. But yeah, let's just go ahead
and give Josh the MVP. He has two more wins,
none of them against Baltimore, who beat them. Whatever, I
don't have a vote, what do I care? I got
another house.
Speaker 6 (01:39:29):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:39:34):
Adam and Adam take Houston sports very seriously. It's everything
else in life that they take lightly. I'm a bad
bother and their wives love them for it.
Speaker 6 (01:39:46):
Holly cares about his winning back.
Speaker 1 (01:39:49):
To the A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:40:00):
All right, let's dissect before we get to our next guest,
because Aaron Wilson is scheduled to join us. Of course,
he contributes here on Sports Talk seven ninety and for
kp RC Channel two is on the field with me.
Following the Texans loss to the Chiefs on Saturday. You
heard there from Alex Glaze up in Baltimore what he
(01:40:21):
thinks going into this thing. And I have felt for
a long long time like the Ravens are the Texans kryptonite.
And it's not just this current era of c. J.
Stroud Damiko Ryans's head coach, and it goes back to
a long long time. Baltimore's pretty much had its way,
and of course the postseason has not been friendly to
(01:40:42):
the Texans when those two teams have matched up. But
it was interesting to hear his reaction to the Deontay Johnson.
We didn't really kind of get to lay that out
because it happened so quickly, and then with the Christian
Walker press conference, the Texans picked him up off of Waivers.
The first question I had was, how were they at
(01:41:02):
the front of the line.
Speaker 3 (01:41:03):
They weren't, because that means, right, this.
Speaker 4 (01:41:06):
Is a pickup that made out of desperation, and this
is a pickup they would never have made if they
were not in dire straits, and they are.
Speaker 3 (01:41:14):
They're going to the playoffs. They want to win.
Speaker 4 (01:41:17):
Otherwise they would not have probably taken a chance even
a flyer. You know, he comes in, it doesn't work out, great,
you move on. It's not that big of a deal
either way. But he was a Steeler with Mike Tomlin
on a playoff team multiple years there, and they just
didn't want him anymore. We're like, he was their number
one wide receiver sadly because George Pickens was better than
him the first day he was a Steeler and they
(01:41:38):
couldn't figure that out. And then they were, okay, well
let's move along with George, and you know, we've got
you know, our tight end, and we were going to
change our quarterbacks this year because the crappy ones last
year we need to get rid of, and we're gonna
get two slightly better quarterbacks this year. So they traded
him away. They traded him to Carolina. Carolina thought, yeah,
that was rough. I don't know, Bryce wasn't really he
didn't really have a whole lot there. Let's go get
(01:41:58):
Deontay Johnson not work in Carolina, and then the Ravens
had openings, I guess, and.
Speaker 3 (01:42:07):
I think Alex is right.
Speaker 4 (01:42:08):
They didn't really need him because as long as for
Sean Bateman and Za Flowers are on the field, those
are really the two wideouts they use the most, and
I think their depth is actually not that bad. But
a good, a really good Deontay Johnson can be a
really good borderline number one receiver. So they made that trade,
didn't cost him a whole lot, and he went there.
He caught a ball, He was there for seven weeks,
(01:42:28):
he caught a pass. He was inactive for two games because,
as Alex described, he basically quit out there and they
could all see it. He got suspended by the team
for the conduct that suggested he didn't want to be there,
and then he was inactive for two weeks and then
they let him go, and the Texans really were faced
with no real other real options because they don't have
(01:42:50):
to question whether he's in shape.
Speaker 3 (01:42:51):
I mean, they could sign anybody off the stream.
Speaker 2 (01:42:53):
A talent standpoint, he's easily the best guy available out there.
Speaker 4 (01:42:57):
Yeah, And from a scheduling standpoint, he's not gonna on Wednesday.
I wouldn't imagine, and Demiko kind of said as much,
and he probably already knew they'd put an acclaim for him.
They didn't find out maybe until earlier this afternoon they
would be the team that got him. But I don't
think there's any reason for any way he's active. He
doesn't know anything about what they're doing. If they're in
that bad of shape, like if Joe, if John Metchi
(01:43:20):
is not available, and they only want to dip so
far into their practice squad. But that's probably the way
to go because those guys have been here, if not
just this year, but for multiple years. Two years would
be enough because it's Bobby Sloak's offense and they would
know it. And that's why Jared Wayne was elevated last
week and I'm sure he will be again. I believe
this will be his third elevation to do so. Xavier
(01:43:41):
Hutchinson is right in line behind Nico Collins. But after Wednesday,
they got a whole ten days, maybe eleven days before
they plague, and for him to be on the field,
for him to be in his playbook, for him to
be sitting in the wide receiver room, for him to
be studying on his own to actually be in a
place where he can't help this offense, the player, the
physical traits. Absolutely, he should be able to help a team.
(01:44:04):
He should have been able to help all the teams
he's played for this year. This is team three.
Speaker 2 (01:44:08):
Yeah, this year. Yeah, it's got a little bit of
a I'm trying to think of a parallel, and I
know there's a name that's so obvious.
Speaker 4 (01:44:16):
Well before the Texans got together with the Dolphins to
start this three games an eleven day stretch, the Dolphins said,
you don't want to be here. You think you can
have an opportunity elsewhere. You're clearly not on the field here.
You're not a problem, but we'll grant you your release.
Odell Beckham Junior was waived, and it's because they just
weren't seeing him on the field, and which is sometimes
(01:44:36):
it works out this way. They their number two receiver
got hurt that day in that game against the Texans,
Jalen Waddle. He was unavailable for them in yesterday's game,
which they won over the forty nine ers. But opportunities
to just never know when they're going to pop up
and why and for which team you know, and at
the time. I don't even think I'd mentioned anything about
(01:44:56):
Sims being released on Saturday or on Friday, excuse me,
before Saturday's game to make room for the official move
with earth Smith being signed, because clearly they needed him.
Speaker 3 (01:45:06):
They still only have two active tight ends on the
roster and.
Speaker 4 (01:45:09):
See Simms was claimed by the Ravens last touchdown, the
only touchdown the Texans scored against the Ravens in their
playoff game last year was Steven simms punt return. He
is probably there a little bit for Intel, and I
think they're okay in every other regard, but it's probably
a move that a why not move, And for Sims
it's great because now he's playing for another playoff team
(01:45:30):
and maybe he's part of their active roster every week.
He clearly was no longer the return option here in Houston,
but they need it. They have to take a chance
on Deontay Johnson. They have to take a chance that
the other people on this team and whoever else he
talks to within this organization will help him realize they
want you here because they think you can help. Please,
(01:45:51):
maybe for your own good and your own future, you know,
make this worth your while. He could have a game
of consequence against the Titans and then playoff games of
consequence as he figures out what his future is.
Speaker 3 (01:46:05):
It could be good for both parties.
Speaker 2 (01:46:06):
I just it's we see this in the NFL all
the time, and I know you've seen this a player.
It's not This isn't even like a name recognition, although
you do recognize his name like a big name, and
you mentioned Odell Beckham Junior. By the time he got
to Miami, he was so close to the end of
the line like this. That's not how I look at
(01:46:28):
Deontay Johnson, much different situation. But this guy fill in
the blank player ex player. Usually it's a wide receiver.
They tend to be divas, and he's got all the
talent in the world.
Speaker 3 (01:46:40):
But it didn't help.
Speaker 2 (01:46:41):
It didn't work out here, and it also didn't work
out over here, and then it also didn't work out
over here. But this time it's definitely gonna work out.
You mentioned it off the top. The reason he's in
Houston is because they are desperate. That is the word.
There's no other more perfect word to describe the situation.
You had Stefan Diggs go down earlier in the year,
for the year or for the rest of the season.
(01:47:02):
You just lost Tank Dell. Now you've got Nico Collins
and a bunch of Jags And I don't mean Jaguars,
I mean just the guys. You've got nothing to lose essentially,
and hey, if it works out, you know, maybe he
spells Stefan Diggs next season. I'm saying that, not even
with a straight face, but you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (01:47:22):
Like to me, that a real commitment to Deontay Johnson's
probably a move this team's not willing to make.
Speaker 2 (01:47:29):
Well, not after seeing him for two games either. I mean,
if he plays plus playoffs, I just think what his
path to Houston. They're not gonna Oh, well, now he's fixed. Yeah,
I mean, you're right in some scenario could make you believe, well,
why wouldn't we. But a real financial commitment, which I
would assume he's looking for, you know, played out that
extension he got with the Steelers, played out his rookie deal,
(01:47:51):
got a two year deal after that, and it was
really good money. It wasn't unbelievable money, but it's really
good money.
Speaker 11 (01:47:58):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:47:59):
He's at the stage he's a twenty eight year old
wide receiver he's been in the league for six years
at a pretty good level. Yeah, I should be making
great money. That's not happening this offseason, no matter what.
Speaker 5 (01:48:10):
I mean.
Speaker 4 (01:48:10):
I shouldn't say no matter what, because I don't know
what's gonna happen during the two games he's gonna play
here or more. But yeah, this is a it can't
there's no downside. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work,
and when and if, I hope there's a very good chance.
I'd say ninety five percent chance he's playing in the
Titans game, even if he's catching balls from Davis Mills,
(01:48:31):
because you have to get him on the field to
see if he really can be a part of whatever
game plan you're putting together for your wild Card round game,
which is going to be immediately the week after that.
This ten day period after the game on Wednesday, before
they play again will be very, very important to him.
Speaker 3 (01:48:45):
There'll be a roster move associated with this.
Speaker 4 (01:48:47):
I'm not sure what the Texans will do because they
actually have multiple roster moves to make. Tank Dell was
listed on the injury report yesterday, so was Jimmy Ward,
so was Shaq Mason. Mason's probably fine there's no reason
to I r him because you think he's coming back.
But those two guys are coming off the roster. There's
one spot and wide receiver. For wide receiver makes sense.
They are not quite as bad a situation I guess
(01:49:10):
at safety, but.
Speaker 3 (01:49:12):
They're pretty close to it.
Speaker 4 (01:49:13):
You know, they're two most important at the line of
scrimmage safeties, essentially their slot corner, which in their defense
is a safety.
Speaker 3 (01:49:21):
They're down both of them.
Speaker 4 (01:49:22):
The next guy in line to play that position at
a high level is actually probably Kamari Lassiter, but I
don't and I know he kind of lined up there
a little bit on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:49:32):
You just can't.
Speaker 4 (01:49:34):
You cannot do that, because what are you gonna do
when he's not your other cornerback. You're gonna put Jeff
Akuda out there. Please don't, please don't. I wouldn't even
consider it. I put Jeff Akuda in the slot before
I'd put Kamari Lassiter in the slot. And maybe on
a game day that was kind of the move made
out of, well, we don't have much choice. I hope
the short week doesn't make them think similarly, whoever else
(01:49:56):
you have on the team, I'm not moving lassiter or
obviously stack out of not moving them off of their
year long positions to put somebody else out there on
the field that I know can't play the position for them,
and Akuda is not capable of doing that for this team.
Speaker 2 (01:50:10):
Lots of things to discuss still, and you know what,
it's good chance to catch up with our good buddy
Aaron Wilson. He will be a long next segment to
talk about well the latest news because it is late
breaking as it pertains to the Texans, and then everything
that happened from over the weekends he was there in
cac We'll catch up with Aaron Wilson next here on
the eighteam the A team on Sports Talk seven ninety
(01:50:35):

Speaker 6 (01:51:14):
Work at your command, mister Bonbee.
Speaker 2 (01:51:16):
That's right, Jess.
Speaker 8 (01:51:17):
Asks just my device to play Sports Talk seven ninety
on I Heart Radio.
Speaker 4 (01:51:29):
Texans schedule this week a little bit different clearly in
that well, they just played on Saturday, got on a
plane and came back to the h visited with the
media a couple times already this week, seeing the practice
field for the first time this afternoon, and most of
the time we get a chance to talk to Dimico
Ryans and c J Stroud post practice.
Speaker 3 (01:51:51):
Not the case today, It was actually the other way around.
Speaker 4 (01:51:53):
But to that end, Aaron Wilson set to join us
here on Sports Talk seven to ninety. You hear them
all throughout the football season and beyond, and of course
his strong contributions to KPRC channel too as well. You
caught him looking just as good as anybody else on
TV last night. Nice looking suit Aaron had on last night.
Speaker 3 (01:52:11):
Aaron the latest on.
Speaker 4 (01:52:13):
The text and says they need wide receiver help. Desperate
was the word we used when they put in a
claim and did, in fact add Deontay Johnson. What are
your thoughts about this move and why he's now on
his fourth organization since March?
Speaker 5 (01:52:28):
Right, Yeah, an emotional wide receiver wants the football. Who doesn't,
who doesn't want to be involved? And he's this guy
that last year there was a fumble and he should
have jumped on it and he got scolded by Mike Tomlins.
So counted player. But there's been some inconsistency of focus
and in the case of the Ravens, a complete non
(01:52:48):
fit as he refused to go in the game, didn't
like his role. They suspended for conduct detrimental. No off
field issues known of, just some bad fits. He had
most of his productions or the Pittsburgh Steelers his third
round draft pick. He's done a little bit for the Panthers,
but with the with the Ravens just one catch, So yeah,
I don't know how much of an impact this is
(01:53:09):
going to be. And they basically swapped as I reported.
In addition to we reported on Johnson, Stephen Simms Junior
joins the Ravens, Travis Graduate former Texan put on waivers
and now so it's like a trading places receiver swap
but not a trade, but they trade places and sims
now with the Ravens and they play each other on Christmas.
(01:53:32):
So pretty ironic.
Speaker 2 (01:53:33):
Yeah, quick turnaround obviously, But going back to Saturday and
what happened, and you know, we were both in that
locker room and just talking with them in the rawest
of raw emotions in the immediacy of the Tank Dell injury.
What's the team like, you know, a few days out
since that has happened, And how hard do you think
(01:53:56):
it's been for them to just kind of refocus because
they've got such a quick term around for this game
on Christmas.
Speaker 5 (01:54:02):
I think it's very tough. It's shows especially for CJ. Stroud.
He calls Tank his best friend. It's emotional. It's tough
on these guys, but you have to do it, you know,
It's just this is the rules of engagement. It's what
they chose to do and not being heartless or you know,
hard hearted. It's just the Ravens, the NFL. No one's
(01:54:25):
feeling sorry for You're They're not the only team that
deals with these things. I understand the tank injury is
worse than most and it's very emotion very popular player.
But you know, I've lived at Detroy Lyons. They've lost
a lot of guys. Aiden Hutchinson, he's not a fan there.
I mean, it happens, is the brutal sport, and we
were reminded of that hit close to home here with
the Texans. I think they'll be okay. I'm watching them practice.
(01:54:47):
I'm standing off to the side watching the guys go
through the drills, and they seem normal. I mean they're
looking like it's business as usual. I think that they compartmentalized.
I mean they're trained to be that way. That's part
of the ethos of being an NFL football player.
Speaker 4 (01:55:04):
What do you think about what is on tap for them?
Offensive line wise? Obviously, Shack Mason left after four snaps.
Kendrick Green came in and it seemed like he did
a nice job, even though they had not turned to
him throughout many opportunities to do so throughout the season.
Demiko Ryans at least publicly acknowledged the same that he
looked like he did a nice job stepping in for him.
(01:55:25):
What's your thought about how long Mason is off of
the field for the Texans and if they'll just trot
out the same offensive line that we saw finish the
game against Kansas City.
Speaker 5 (01:55:36):
That is the plan. Yeah, Kindergreen is the right guard
and they'll use that alignment.
Speaker 6 (01:55:40):
Again.
Speaker 5 (01:55:41):
I thought he did play okay, especially as run blocking
past blocking from Football Focus didn't like it so much.
They gave him a twelve point two out of one
hundred grade not so good. But I think it wasn't
as glaring as they're making it out to be. He
had a few bad players, but he's also rust he
hasn't played regularly. He's a good athlete. It's probably you know,
it's kind of an indictment of Kenyon Green. The Kenyon's
(01:56:02):
not going in that's a different story. And Yeah, as
far as Shack and how long he's out, I'm hearing
three to four weeks with a sprained mcl A grade
to sprained mcl.
Speaker 2 (01:56:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:56:14):
The last thing we were discussing before we brought you
into this prior segment was what the Texans would do
with that third injury. Jimmy Ward, the replacement for Jalen Petrie,
is now no longer available. I'm sure they'll put him
on iron that he's out for the season. How do
you think they will align their defensive secondary not only
for this game, but possibly in their postseason game.
Speaker 5 (01:56:35):
Right, it's Kamori Lassiter at nickel, It's Jeff Okuda at corner,
and Jimmy Ward and Tank Dell are both placed on
injury reserve today, officially off of the fifty three and
onto the reserve list. So yeah, they did a couple
of things today roster wise, and then the next thing
is for Tomari is you know I think he can
(01:56:58):
play nickel? You worry about Jeff Koudas outside quarter? Is
he going to get picked on? Quite possibly?
Speaker 3 (01:57:03):
Yes, Uh, you're being nice.
Speaker 4 (01:57:05):
I won't as I've seen him get out on the
field these last couple of weeks for very few plays.
Any team that has any kind of offensive mind in
their coaches box, they have to be seeing that because
he should be getting picked on every single time he
steps on the field. And if the Texans are putting
him out there permanently to start a game, to me,
that's a that's a huge issue.
Speaker 5 (01:57:28):
It is you know Jeff got picked on in the
Dallas game. That that's kind of jumps out of my memory.
It's a tough play for him. So he's got a
guy out there that's vulnerable to speed, and you can
expect them to target him. I think it's going to
be to be challenging for them to line up. And
(01:57:49):
practice has now wrapped as far as the media portions
in the choir compound to my car, So I got
more time now to guys.
Speaker 2 (01:57:57):
All right, good to know good, I know we can
block out the noise here. So look, no, it's fine, Aeron,
and we appreciate the time. We'll actually we'll call it
right there because we're actually up against it as well.
We appreciate you joining us, appreciate all the work on
Saturday as well down there afterward, and we'll catch up
with you real soon erin all right, you guys, have
(01:58:20):
a good day, you too, Aaron Wilson, You too, Aaron.
Aaron Wilson with us here on Sports Talk seven to
ninety of course, contributor over at KPRC Channel two. And yeah,
it's that time of year. Everybody's dealing with it. Maybe
the Texans are dealing with it a little bit more.
I don't know any team that has dealt with injuries
more so than probably the forty nine ers this year.
If I had to just think off the top of
(01:58:41):
my head, who's been hit the hardest with injuries to
really really pivotal players.
Speaker 4 (01:58:46):
I mean probably I would go with Aaron had suggested
it there a few minutes ago. The Lions specifically defensively,
and I had David Montgomery in there as well offensively.
The quality of players they've lost over and over and
over again, it's amazing.
Speaker 2 (01:59:01):
That's the sick joke about the NFL season. The Lions
have been the best team in football from start to finish,
and they're not going to be able to present their
best version of themselves in time for the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (01:59:11):
Yeah, no question they are. One way you can help
your defense is go out and score on almost every possession,
which they did early in their game against the Bears.
Put the Bears behind the eight ball, kind of dictated
what they needed to do and kind of miraculously, Caleb
Williams just turned in his ninth consecutive interception free performance
without a victory.
Speaker 2 (01:59:32):
They're it is incredible. That's I saw people trying to
literally unheard of. Yeah, yeah, that's that is that is insane.
By the way, for the umpteenth time, Jared Goff better
fantasy start than Pat Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (01:59:45):
Yeah, but mahomes fantasy start this week was perfectly fine.
He had a rushing touchdown as well, and a passing
touchdown was broken.
Speaker 2 (01:59:52):
Basically, I was told what a lie? All right, we
got our final segment of the A team before we
make way for Rockets basketball coverage. That is straight ahead.
Speaker 6 (02:00:04):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (02:00:08):
Guys, as we look forward to twenty twenty five, what
is the level of your testosterone? If you can't tell
me right off the bat, then you don't know, and
it could be low. I'm sorry. Those are just the cold,
hard facts. And as you get a little bit older,
and it doesn't have to be like old, old old,
we're talking about in your thirties, your testosterone level can diminish,
and once that happens, it can affect a variety of things.
(02:00:30):
It's not just sexual wellness, although that is usually at
the top of the list, but if you are inable
to or unable to lose weight, if your inability to
build muscle mass, if your inability to have hair vitality.
Brain fog is a huge factor. Any sort of energy decline,
all of that reduced drive in your motivation, that can
(02:00:52):
all be a factor from low testosterone. MEN'ST Clinic dot
Com is the answer. They've got five Houston area location heights, Cyprus, Paarland, Pasadena,
and Spring. Check them out online today at Men's T
Clinic dot Com.
Speaker 1 (02:01:08):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler.
Speaker 6 (02:01:10):
The A team now continues.
Speaker 2 (02:01:24):
Rockets Basketball right around the corner here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety and Space City Home Network's been a
very busy day. We knew it would be. We knew
we would have a lot to talk about to cram
into one less hour and all three teams participating, and
all three teams have done things, well, not all three teams,
but the Astros have introduced something they did last week.
(02:01:46):
The Texans have just done something. And we'll see what
the Rockets do later on tonight. Hopefully it's victory. As
they continue on this East Coast road trip, they're going
for three in a row. They're in Charlotte. They owe
them for opening night. I still can't believe that's a thing,
but it was. The Hornets have won a grand total
of six games since then, seven and twenty one team
(02:02:07):
coming into town.
Speaker 4 (02:02:08):
Yeah, the second consecutive we've heard that road game against
an Eastern Conference team that is seven and twenty one.
Speaker 2 (02:02:14):
Who's like the most unlikely rookie on the Hornets that
could score the first fourteen points of tonight's game.
Speaker 4 (02:02:20):
I mean, Jacoby Walter is going I think he's going
to be a very good player, but usually twenty eight
percent three point shooters don't haul off and have the
type of shooting.
Speaker 2 (02:02:28):
Against the third best defensive team in the league.
Speaker 4 (02:02:30):
And he hit a three pointer after Dylan Brooks put
back to end the third quarter. He threw up a
one armed, over the shoulder, well defended fifty five footer
that went and off the glass lace of a second
or on the clock, and he did it. Thankfully, there
was point one, so there was really no chance that
that they didn't even have to review. Derek Fisher, It's
not possible, but no, I don't expect that to happen.
(02:02:52):
Brandon Miller not gonna play tonight. And I'll get you
more of the rocket stuff coming your way, starting at
five with launch pad. You and a mt will have
the game begin at five thirty with a six o'clock
tip off all that you said about all the things
we wanted to cram into this show. Also involved in
that is tomorrow's the twenty fourth We Won't be with You.
The twenty fifth follows we again won't be with you, So.
Speaker 2 (02:03:15):
The game to talk about on Thursday. Yes, we'll be
back again. Following the.
Speaker 4 (02:03:20):
Visit from Jolly Old Saint, Chris's clause, if you want
to mix all their names and all of his names.
Speaker 2 (02:03:25):
Together, Santa Kringle, well, I don't know what everybody prefers.
Speaker 3 (02:03:28):
Santa Claus is nice.
Speaker 4 (02:03:29):
Chris Kringle I think has kind of liked that one,
and I recognize his name is also Nick, So whatever
you prefer, he's Jolly Saint, he is also a saint.
So I'm sure your chimney is wide enough for him
to cram down and bring on some gifts. I hope
for everybody out there, we did get you quite a
bit nearly the entire Christian Walker introductory press conference. And
(02:03:50):
as Data said, and this is fair, they lost two
bats from the top five in their order. They added
two bats that are legitimate ads, not just literally we're
plugging somebody in. It's reasonable to think the duo they
have this year will produce as many home runs as
the duo they had last year.
Speaker 2 (02:04:07):
Well, when one guy's not producing them because he's gone.
Speaker 4 (02:04:12):
Alex Bregman had twenty six home runs last year, pretty
much healthy all year other than the Gremlins. Kyle Tucker
half a season. Roughly, he had a monster season. It
was just half a season. He had twenty three home
runs in his less than eighty games of play. Walker
and Perettis had forty five home runs last year. I
don't think Perettis even had the kind of year he's
capable of because the last two months of his season
(02:04:33):
were spent in Chicago where he just simply he didn't hit.
Speaker 2 (02:04:36):
It was bad.
Speaker 3 (02:04:37):
He was a bad offensive player with the Cubs.
Speaker 4 (02:04:40):
Walker I asked Chandler about this on Friday when we
were discussing the ballpark changes, and I don't want to
present it in the way it kind of sounded, oh, well,
he's he any player. Well, they're coming to a minute
Bay Park launch pad. Thirty five homers Guaranteed it's happening.
They don't mean to present that, but there are differences
(02:05:01):
between what happens to the line drives you hit in
Arizona eighty one times a year or seventy seven times
a year, and what is going to happen to those
same line drives here for both of those two players,
not just because of the short just in general. And
even though Arizona is not a bad offensive park and
you still only play half your games there, ye bigger,
(02:05:22):
I do think there is an inherent benefit to playing
half your games here.
Speaker 3 (02:05:26):
I'm not calling for homers, but.
Speaker 2 (02:05:28):
There are balls that you hit that will be I
am singles because the scoreboards there. And by the way,
is I have two questions for you? How soon do
the Astros bring back Chason Hayward? And number two? How
sad is it that he will immediately be the best
(02:05:48):
outfielder on the roster.
Speaker 3 (02:05:50):
He hasn't said anything that I've seen, but.
Speaker 2 (02:05:53):
Because Dana Brown just said they're still wanting to add
a left handed bat, and we all know they're not
spending money on one.
Speaker 4 (02:05:58):
I don't know that there's major League Baseball in Jason
Hayward's future. He didn't say anything about retirement when he's
here that I'm aware.
Speaker 3 (02:06:04):
Of, and I'm not saying money.
Speaker 4 (02:06:07):
Yeah, but he got a nine million dollar deal, which
was an absolute nine million dollar gift last year, not
from the Astros. I don't know what kind of gift
he's expecting this year. Yeah, a couple million.
Speaker 3 (02:06:18):
Maybe. I'm not spending very much money on Jason Haley.
Speaker 2 (02:06:21):
As long as they don't give him twelve million like
they did to Michael Brantley when he was a carcass.
Speaker 3 (02:06:25):
That was a mistake.
Speaker 2 (02:06:26):
Yeah, I don't and they won't. But again that you're
not you're not addressing the second question.
Speaker 4 (02:06:32):
Yeah, I don't know the names are because they're then
names I brought up earlier, like the caliber of Eloy Jimenez,
I mean Ben Gamble, for crying out loud, is the
caliber of player. I'm sure they will add in hopes
that they get a couple of good months about how
much profar gonna make more than they're likely willing to spend,
but that that's a tough how much more?
Speaker 2 (02:06:49):
Because I think he's perfect, I.
Speaker 4 (02:06:51):
Mean, he would be phenomenal for his positional flexibility, the
fact that he brings an element of speed, but he
hit free agency off of.
Speaker 3 (02:06:58):
A pretty good year.
Speaker 2 (02:06:59):
Yeah, the cost this is going to be.
Speaker 4 (02:07:00):
I would think he would want a multi year commitment
with you know, seventeen million a year sixty fifteen. I mean,
look at what Jack Peterson just got.
Speaker 2 (02:07:10):
Jock Peterson, how much did he get?
Speaker 3 (02:07:12):
Thirty eighty seven million? I believe over two years?
Speaker 2 (02:07:15):
That's nauseating. He still were those stupid pearls.
Speaker 3 (02:07:19):
Don't think so?
Speaker 2 (02:07:20):
What an unlikable pud. I'm glad Tommy Fams slapped him
the open hands.
Speaker 3 (02:07:26):
He's had some good baseball seasons.
Speaker 2 (02:07:28):
Yeah, that one in twenty seventeen. Did you see that
graphic that was going around about the teams of the best?
Speaker 5 (02:07:33):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (02:07:34):
Was it the best war that failed to win the
World Series? Did I believe I've talked twenty five?
Speaker 3 (02:07:40):
I believe yes.
Speaker 2 (02:07:41):
Did you see the twenty seventeen Dodgers on there? Because
I didn't see them?
Speaker 5 (02:07:45):
Did you?
Speaker 2 (02:07:45):
I didn't see them?
Speaker 3 (02:07:46):
That sounds rhetorical in nature.
Speaker 2 (02:07:48):
Well, the Astros were on that list twice twenty nineteen,
twenty eighteen.
Speaker 3 (02:07:52):
Well, the Dodgers were on it three times.
Speaker 2 (02:07:54):
If I'm not mistaken, yep, not the twenty seventeen Dodgers.
Why is not that true? I thought all that happened
was that the Astros cheated and they would have just
cruised to.
Speaker 4 (02:08:02):
The three appearances in the top eight for the Dodgers
twenty one, nineteen, and twenty two.
Speaker 2 (02:08:06):
How many Yankees appearance is just for fun.
Speaker 3 (02:08:08):
None in the top eight.
Speaker 2 (02:08:10):
Yeah, But on the twenty five list, how many times
did they appear?
Speaker 3 (02:08:13):
The twenty twenty two Yankees were twelve?
Speaker 2 (02:08:16):
Hey, how many wins did they get?
Speaker 3 (02:08:18):
Twenty seventeen Yankees were twenty second?
Speaker 2 (02:08:20):
Oh boy did they appear on the list at all?
Ever again after that.
Speaker 4 (02:08:24):
They were the only team Only two teams listed in
the top twenty five. And this is a list of
twenty five best teams since two thousand that did not
win the World Series and it's ranked by f WAR.
The only two teams were on there that made the
top twenty five since two thousand that lost in the
wild card round were the twenty twenty two Mets the
(02:08:46):
twenty twenty three Rays. At least the twenty seven Yankees
reached a CS few others the ds, but two of
the top four were the Astros. The twenty eighteen Astros
were fourth, the twenty nineteen Astros were first, meaning their
quality of team based on f war and not only
better but significantly better than the two thousand and one
(02:09:08):
Mariners or second on the list.
Speaker 2 (02:09:10):
Best team to never win a World Series the twenty
nineteen Houston Astros fair accurate, stable, stupid Game seven with
the Washington Walgreens.
Speaker 4 (02:09:20):
I don't think the twenty twenty five Astros f war
will put them on this list, but we'll find out
as the season plays out, all.
Speaker 2 (02:09:28):
Right, we'll find out about what's going down in Charlotte
in a matter of seconds. Here you'll have the local
pre game, I'll have the network. We'll have the call
here on Sports Talk seven ninety and Space City Home Network.
Wishing everybody a happy holiday, will come back, like we mentioned,
to talk about all things that happen. Another NFL game
featuring the Texans on Thursday afternoon. Have a great holiday everyone.
(02:09:51):
We will talk to you then
