In what began as a discussion about Yainer Diaz being a sleepy good player for the Astros in 2025, soon turned to one member of The A-Team making a very bold claim about the catcher. When it comes to really good offensive catchers in the American League, names like Adley Rutschman and Salvador Perez come to mind. This member of The A-Team says it's time to put Yainer Diaz in that category.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
How about if I said, okay, sleep on him, the
most productive American League catcher in twenty twenty five will
be Yaner Daz. I'm not making some bold prediction. I
don't think I'm not, you know, homering it up by
sitting here on the flagship station for the Houston Astros
and trying to tell those people something that isn't true.
Last year was a down year for Yaner Daz offensively,

(00:23):
in my opinion, based on what I saw his first year,
I think that's what he can do every year, and
he was much better in his first year. He had
a higher batting average last year, which if you're paying
attention to that only, you're not paying attention at all,
Janar Diez. Strictly, among qualified catchers last year in the
American League, there's Salvi and then there's him. Cal Rawley

(00:48):
had a thirty four homer one hundred RBI season, but
he also hit to twenty and he also struck out
one hundred and seventy six times. That's sixty nine more
strikeouts than Yaner dis last season in far fewer at bats.
He can hit the ball over the fence better than

(01:08):
any other catcher. He drove in a ton of runs,
but he had so many awful at bats. That's why
I'd rake Yonnard Diez a little bit ahead of him.
You might one GM might pick one over the other.
I would prefer to have the guy that's going to
drive in one hundred runs and bat fourth and hit
thirty four homers and have fifty five extra base hits.
Another GM might say, well, I like a guy who's
going to drive in eighty five runs and have fifty

(01:30):
five extra base hits. But he's also going to have
fifty more singles and seventy five fewer strikeouts. So he
might actually knock in a run without getting a hit.
He might actually move a runner up ninety feet without
getting a hit. Roley's just going to be walking back
to the bench. Just one player, for example, I think
lange Leers is probably closer to the top. Oh Hope,
if he's healthy, is pretty good. Retchman is there, but

(01:52):
I'm not taking any of those guys. You have the
best designated hitter in the American League, no question, defensively
defensive or designated hitter. I don't need to differentiate at
that spot. You have the best offensive catcher in the
American League, possibly if Perez is healthy this year, he'll
probably still hold that title as being the best.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
When he's crazy because he's like eighty.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
But he also spends some time as a non defensive
player because he will DH to help save his legs.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
I mean, which he does two occasionally, but it's not often.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Sally played one hundred and fifty eight games last year,
which is incredible.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
How old is he now?

Speaker 1 (02:28):
I think he goes he's thirty seven year old season
this year. But either way, you're saying he could be
slept on. I will do everything we can. I mean,
we're only on four hours a day, plus, we're on
social media twenty four hours a day, plus we do
some other things that should have us in your you know,
in your brains. We'll do everything we can. Yaner Ds
cannot be slept on. Yer Diaz and a seven oh

(02:49):
five ops and a one oh five ops plus is
an absolute disaster for the twenty twenty five Astros.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
It's also not gonna happen. He's good.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
He's just flat out one of the best hitting care
in baseball and it's not gonna change.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
You mentioned Rushman, and I only bring that up because
it seems like he is just always getting the hype
getting you know, he was.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Really good as first go round and still pretty good.
Is sexon living on that and he's got less success.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
He's still so young.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
I mean, I'm talking about one guy like there can't
possibly be a regression. Rutchman's heading into year number four
next year. It's almost the same thing, right, and I'm
just dismissing him completely after one down year. I mean,
what did I just say seven oh five ops and
a one oh five ops plus.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Would be a disaster for the Astros in twenty five

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Last year Rutchman, as I look it up now, seven
oh nine ops, one oh seven ops plus
