基督教与民主的关系是政治神学探讨的一个重点，而在中国以基要主义为底色的神学背景下，政治与民主的关系经常是基督教话语的禁忌。作为中国自由派神学代表的吴耀宗在 1940 年代关于基督教与民主关系的论述有很多，虽然他对民主的认识有很大的局限性，以至于将自由派基督教与中共捆绑在一起来追求民主。但他主动出击去参与政治、参与社会 , 积极就社会政治议题发表基督教立场的观点，特别是其主张基督教应该积极追求民主的精神，值得现在的教会借鉴。
