حسنیه، دختر همراهم است. او امروز آخرین روز مکتبش است و حتا فکر می‌کند که احتمال آمدن در روز نمره‌خوانی هم برایش نزدیک به صفر است. وقتی با هم‌صنفی‌هایش خداحافظی می‌کند، با چشم‌های سرخ و گونه‌های نم‌ناک سمت من می‌آید. بیکش را به شانه می‌اندازد و می‌گوید: «کاش دو ماهی غیرحاضری می‌کردم، محروم می‌شدم و سال بعد دوباره به مکتب می‌آمدم.» او را در آغوش می‌گیرم و برایش امید روزی را می‌دهم که خود من نیز در این وضع، به آمدنش شک دارم. او اما گریه می‌کند و می‌گوید: «باورم نمی‌شود که دیگر قرار نیست مکتب بیایم. من به امید چه سه ماه زمستان را بگذرانم؟ باورم نمی‌شود. چه‌طور زنده‌گی کنم؟»
