In today’s episode, I delve into the realities of those overwhelming mornings where tasks pile up faster than we can manage them. We all know the feeling—calls to make, decisions looming, and that nagging inner voice suggesting we're not equipped to handle it all. This season has been particularly heavy and raw, a reminder that preparedness transcends neat checklists; it truly thrives in the chaotic, unpredictable messiness of life. I draw inspiration from Randy Pausch’s “The Last Lecture,” a powerful reminder that brick walls aren’t barriers but rather challenges that reveal how much we desire to overcome them. They exist to filter out those who don’t want it badly enough. I encourage everyone to seek out this video, as it provides critical insights about perseverance and resilience. Preparedness, I emphasize, is far more than just having supplies ready; it's a mindset that steadies us amidst adversity. Recently, I've reflected on the importance of knowing when to push forward and when to take a step back. Energy levels fluctuate, stress accumulates, and sometimes we must transition from high performance to maintenance mode. This may mean prioritizing our commitments and leaning on our support networks for assistance. It's okay to say no and to change our daily routines—be it forgoing an intense workout for a simple breath of fresh air. I highlight that preparedness doesn't equate to perfection—it embodies persistence, and sometimes that means self-care is the most crucial aspect of our preparedness strategy. When burdens become heavy, remember the adage: sharing a weight lightens the load. It’s vital to have conversations with trusted individuals and rely on our teams because that’s the essence of community. Throughout this episode, I urge listeners to simplify their tasks when feeling overwhelmed. Given the pressures we face, I propose identifying the three top priorities for the day and setting aside everything else until tomorrow. It's essential to remember that the world won't fall apart in our absence; sometimes we simply cannot pour from an empty cup. In the next episode, I’ll delve into how establishing simple routines can help maintain our functionality and stability during life’s complexities. Thank you for tuning in. (00:17):
Have you ever had one of those mornings where the list is already longer than daylight?
Calls to make, decisions waiting, and that quiet voice in your head saying,
you don't have enough to give today.
Yeah, me too. It's been that kind of season, heavy, full, and frankly real.
But that's exactly where preparedness shows up, not in the clean lines of a

(00:38):
checklist, but in the messy middle where life happens.
You know, there's a great video and book, actually by the same title called
The Last Lecture by Randy Posh.
He was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
And one of my favorite quotes out of that video and out of the book goes something like this.

(00:59):
The brick walls are there for a reason.
They're not there to keep us out.
They are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.
They're there to stop people who don't want it badly enough.
They're there to stop other people.
I haven't seen that video. Just look it up. It's called The Last Lecture on YouTube.

(01:22):
Preparedness isn't just the gear in your truck or food on your shelf.
It's a mindset that keeps you steady when the world around you feels too heavy to carry.
Lately, I've been reminded that being prepared means knowing when to push and when to pause.
When your energy is low, the stress is high, your bandwidth is low,
you have to shift from performance mode into maintenance mode.

(01:45):
Focus on keeping the essentials going.
That might mean saying no to a project or two or asking your support network
or your neighborhood team to cover a gap for a day or two.
It could mean skipping the big workout or just walking outside to breathe.
Preparedness doesn't require perfection. It requires persistence.

(02:07):
And sometimes the most prepared thing you can do is take care of yourself so
you can show up again tomorrow.
When everything feels heavy, remember this. a weight shared is weight reduced.
Talk to someone you trust. Lean on your team. That's what a hometown is for.
That's what the team is for.
It's what all this training is supposed to make possible.

(02:29):
So today, if you're running low, simplify. Just identify your top three priorities
and let the rest of it wait till tomorrow.
I promise you, it will still be there.
You can't pour from an empty cup.
Tomorrow we'll talk about how simple routines keep you functional and steady
when life gets complicated.

(02:50):
But for today, thanks for listening. I appreciate it.
