The latest installment of Sinister Six digs way too deep into the “natural horror” genre with 1976’s Squirm. When a freak electrical storm strikes the town of Fly Creek, angry worms emerge from the ground and start attacking people. As the worms unleash their wrath one tree at a time, city boy Mick arrives in town to visit his long-distance girlfriend Geri. Fly Creek’s very sweaty Sheriff Jim immediately suspects Mick when odd, worm-adjacent occurrences begin popping up. Mick also has to contend with Geri’s mother Naomi (who’s basically in a different movie) and her odd neighbor Rick. After they discover the first of the worms’ many victims, Mick and Geri race to solve the mystery of whatever’s nibbling away at Fly Creek. They probably only have until nightfall, when worms are at their most powerful. Probably. We’re not really sure what the moral of this story is, but we promise that it involves more worms than you’re expecting. Remember to wear your greasiest shirt, drink a few egg creams, and eat plenty of spaghetti for today’s uncomfortably-soggy episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake!
