Soos die spreekwoord sê, ’n boer maak ’n plan. En daar is min mense wat dit meer uitbeeld as Christi Van den Heever. Die 2023 Jongboer van die Jaar in die Wes-Kaap se roete in die landbou in is dalk onkonvensioneel, maar dit spreek van harde werk.
Sy liefde vir landbou is gebore toe hy op slegs sesjarige ouderdom ’n groentetuin gemaak het in Springbok, wat hy bemes het met sy oupa se voerkraal mis. Maar sy pa het op die myne gewerk, nie geboer nie, so Christi moes hard werk om vir homself ’n loopbaan in die landbou te maak.
Vandag bestuur hy Graaff Fruit se Rietfontein plaas in die Koue Bokkeveld met 220 hektaar vrugtebome. Ons gesels met hom oor hoe hy op Rietfontein beland het, hoe boerdery en besigheid hand aan hand loop en die nette wat hy ontwerp het om oor sy vrugteboorde te span.
