‘n Noodgedwonge besluit in boerdery is nie iets wat enige boer wil neem nie. Inteendeel, ‘n boer probeer sy beste om ten alle tye volle beheer te hê van alles wat op sy plaas aangaan. Maar na erge droogtes Noord-Wes getref het in die 1980’s, moes Manie du Preez die besluit neem om sy boerdery te diversifiseer, met onder andere hoenders.
Vandag bou sy seun, Herman, voort op die sukses van die hoenderboerdery. Die 2022 Jongboer van die Jaar gesels met ons oor die tegnologie wat hulle in die boerdery gebruik, wat hoenderboere in Suid-Afrika by boere in ander lande kan leer en hoekom dit belangrik is om jouself met suksesvolle mense te omring.
Ten spyte van die sukses van die hoender afdeling, weet Herman dat mens nie al jou eiers in een mandjie kan laai nie, so hy boer ook steeds met beeste en mielies.
