(00:00):
I'm Jaime Gennaro, business coach and consultant and founder of Practica Consulting.
In today's episode of Business for Humans, we're diving into the theme of refocusing and re-energizing.
We'll explore how to balance mindset work with action and why it's so important
to embrace the journey rather than expecting an overnight transformation.

(00:23):
I share strategies for setting clear, focused goals and breaking them down into
manageable tasks. Let's go.
Hello, everyone. It is the beginning of September here in the Netherlands.
I'm so happy that it's still summer. It's really like more summer than it's been most of the summer.

(00:46):
So as some people are preparing for fall and for fall weather and all of the things that go with it.
I am holding on to the last days of summer.
But mentally, most of us think of September as sort of another fresh start, right?
If we think about the school calendar and even some company fiscal year calendars,

(01:11):
this is the time to kind of get going again, right? To refocus.
Hopefully, Hopefully you've taken a holiday. You got to take a little bit of
a reprieve at some point during the summer.
And so now you're ready to get focused and reconnected to what you're doing,

(01:34):
why you're doing it, and then start to really make a plan to move yourself forward.
Word. So I am no different.
September feels that way to me too. We kind of have this slow period in the business.
In August, things kind of start to ramp down.
And then September starts to get really busy again because in the sort of operational

(01:57):
role I play with some of my clients, things start to ramp up.
Clients are showing up. They need to get organized. They need to get it focused.
And with some of my coaching clients and career change clients, it's the same thing.
It's like, okay, I took a little breather in the summer.
I was just thinking through a lot of things and now I'm ready to put that thought into action.

(02:20):
So what I want to talk about today is that refocus, that refocused energy,
and also how you calibrate the taking action with the mindset.
Work, the personal growth work, what my marketing person and I were just brainstorming

(02:43):
about this idea of the journey, right?
When you start thinking about a career change or you start refocusing yourself
in your career, what you want to be doing next, how you're going to elevate,
where you're going, it's a journey.
And if you're expecting a quick fix or expecting somehow that but overnight

(03:04):
you're going to have all the answers.
It's just not the way it works. I'm so sorry. I know we all want that, right?
We all want someone to hand us an envelope that has the answer that tells us
what we should be doing next and why and how and to not have to go on that journey.
Sometimes we just don't want to or like, can we just not be on a journey for

(03:29):
a minute or not have personal growth for a minute or just make a quick decision so we can move on.
That's always a choice. It's always a choice.
If you do feel like you're in a place where you're like, I don't want to keep
belaboring this. I want to make a decision.
Every decision is right. There's never a wrong decision for you.

(03:51):
Every decision will get you somewhere you need to go.
And once you make the decision, you want to make sure you commit that you're
all in, that you're like, listen, I made this decision. I'm not going to go back on it.
That will be helpful because if you keep belaboring and questioning and wondering
and overthinking, then you never really take that next step.

(04:13):
So that's in the decision-making process. But when we decide that we're going
to commit to a change, to a big change in our career, it's a journey.
And it's important to talk about it here and this idea of refocusing because
what I do with people in my work is I am not a recruiter.

(04:36):
I'm not a headhunter. I'm not a job placement specialist.
I'm the journey. I'm the person you go on the journey with.
I'm the person that's going to help you understand why the journey matters.
And although I do do coaching in time, I have timelines around the coaching

(04:57):
and we have goals we want to hit.
It's really important to me that my clients understand that this isn't like an overnight thing.
We're not going to get you into this elevated place in your life,
doing things differently, making different decisions, approaching your work in a different way.
We have to change all that because if you want something to change in your career,

(05:20):
you're going to have to change your approach.
You can't just keep doing it
the same way and think that magically all the results are going to shift.
The results shift based on what you do and how you approach things.
I'm going to coach you through approaching things and showing up differently.
There's going to be a lot of mindset work in the in-between,

(05:40):
but we're also going to work on tactics, right?
We're going to understand the why behind the journey.
Why do we want to get to a new place in our career? Why do we want to shift
careers? Are we doing it for the right reasons?
And then we start taking actions and showing up differently and creating different results in our lives.

(06:00):
But we want to do it in a focused way. Because if we're trying to target a million
different goals in a million different ways,
and we're just kind of half-heartedly dipping our toes in things for short periods of time,
we'll never really make that full push over the finish line on any one thing,

(06:23):
which is really satisfying, right?
To set a goal and to actually take that goal to the the finish line.
So I'm no different. I pop around and I talk about a lot of different topics.
And I'm just like, okay, what is the thing that feels like the theme that people are going through?
What are my clients dealing with?
I pick these themes and then I kind of pop around.

(06:47):
And to me, they're all linked, right? Of course, I feel a link and a connection
between all of these themes.
But at the same time, I realized I'm a little unfocused too.
I'm kind of popping around. I I had someone do a discovery call the other day
and he said, seems like you do a lot of things.
Like you help people through career change. You help people launch businesses.

(07:08):
You help them through mindset. You help them with tactics. I'm like,
yes, I do. I do all of those things.
But from the outside, if you can't see the thread, if you can't see how all
those things might be connected, it looks scattered, right?
It looks a little bit unfocused, like I'm just trying to help everyone.
But here's what we all have in common when we are...

(07:32):
Wanting to elevate. Not everybody wants to get to the next level of the video
game. Some people are perfectly content.
They're like, this is my job. I can do this for 20 years. It's fine. I'm happy here.
You're not my people. You're not probably listening to this right now.
My people are the people who are like, what's the next thing?

(07:53):
What kind of potential haven't I tapped into yet? What skill sets am I not using?
I know that there's more than this for me. There is a place out there for me
where I get to use my best skills and I get to feel valued for those skills
and I get to work with like-minded people and I get to be in a supportive environment.

(08:18):
You're here because there's something else that you want, that you know you
deserve, that you've been working working hard towards, but you need some focus, right?
You're kind of like trying out a lot of different things, which I encourage,
but you also need some focus.
So how do you get focus? And then how do you move away from focus?

(08:41):
Because I think sometimes there's also a tendency to get stuck in the planning
phase. Like, let me just get myself focused.
I'll make a list. I'll get myself ready. Let me get myself ready again.
Let me get myself ready again. Let me make another other plan.
Let me make another list.
Just make one list and then start implementing the plan.

(09:01):
When you're working towards goals, you don't want to throw that goal so far
out into the future that there's nothing to hold yourself accountable for.
So what I want you to do, this is your work for this week, I want you to think
about what is the next phase of this journey for you?

(09:23):
What is the thing that is really poking at you the most?
Is it, I need more money? Is it, I need more recognition?
Is it, I'm not getting in front of enough clients?
What's the most urgent thing right now that's really poking,

(09:46):
that you're thinking about more often than other things?
And take that thing and break it down into five manageable tasks.
Not things that you need this person and that person and this person and that
person to accomplish, but what are the five things from this most urgent goal

(10:08):
that you want to get to that you could do in the next two weeks?
Right? So start breaking it down into these more manageable pieces.
So then now you have five things to hold yourself accountable to for the next two weeks.
And give yourself some sense of, if I don't do this, what am I missing, right?

(10:33):
If I want to make more money and I've dialed it down to these five things I
could do over the next two weeks to try to get me there,
what I know and what I need to be honest with myself about is if I don't do
those five things, I'm not going to make more money.
Now, it's not guaranteed that I do those five things and I also make more money.

(10:54):
But those five things
are movement movement forward what we
know with physics is like there is an inertia right there's a build building
of motion right that gets things into propulsion if you stay stagnant there's
no propulsion right there's no momentum there's no movement forward word. There's no inertia.

(11:18):
So we want to just make movement. You don't have to pressurize those five things
or pressurize those goals like I'm a loser and I'm going to use this to beat myself up.
But we do have to sit down when we write down these five things and tell ourselves,
if I don't do these five things, I will not get the results that I'm looking for.

(11:42):
And this is something I talk to my clients about too because I assign homework
and to some of my clients they're like it's too much homework I've tried to
scale it back a little bit.
But if you aren't doing the homework, you're not going to get the results that
you came to me to get, period.
And it's not just about homework. It's about that focus, right?

(12:04):
It means, listen, I'm focused on the journey.
I'm focused on getting from point A to some point.
It doesn't have to be B. It can be A.1.
But I am committed to making the movement, to taking the steps.
And even if you can't do all the homework and you just take a 0.5 step,

(12:26):
do the 0.5 step this week, right?
This is part of what is going to keep you focused because you're creating a
plan, let's say at the beginning of a two-week cycle, and you know what's inside
of that plan that you need to get done.
What inevitably happens is that other things get piled on top and priorities start to shift.

(12:50):
Shift what I want you to remember for the next two weeks is that yes things
are going to pile on top yes priorities will start to shift you know there's
always things like your health your mental health your physical health your
your family your friends like sometimes people need your support.
And that's going to trump some of the things on this list but what I really

(13:13):
want you to focus on and set your intention on for the next two weeks as we
start this phase into like, this is our,
you know, we're ramping towards the end of the year.
This is when we really want to meet some goals and objectives.
Whatever those five things are on your list, get them done no matter what.

(13:34):
I want you to, over the next two weeks, just.
Make them a priority. Other things, again, it will shift.
It may not be the first thing you do in the day, but I want you to put those
things at the front burner so that you don't get into the habit of,
it's okay, I can let them go.
It's okay, I can let them go because you're looking for certain results.

(13:57):
That's why you're here. You're looking for a shift. You're looking for a change.
You're looking for an elevation. You're looking for different results.
You're not going to get them if you don't do the things.
So sit down and figure out what those five things are that are connected to
that one urgent burning piece that is, again, poking at you the most.

(14:23):
There are lots of urgent things and lots of goals we can set,
but what's the real honest to God one that you really need to focus on now that's poking at you.
It might be something like you have to pay taxes and you have to come up with
that money and everything else sort of goes to the wayside, which means you have to save money.

(14:45):
You can't do all the things maybe you wanted to do and you have to find a way
to bring in that money if you don't have it, right?
This is kind of one of those funky tax seasons, right?
For some people who have maybe pushed their taxes from April to October,
that might be the thing that's actually poking at you the most that you need

(15:08):
to focus on the most, right?
And I'm talking business, right? Of course, there are things that poke at us personally too.
But I mean, right now in your business, there might be one thing that typically
you would put it to the back burner.
I don't have to think about that right now, but it pokes, right? It's like poking at you.
Or again, maybe it's something related to your clients.

(15:31):
Like, I'm not reaching the number of clients I was reaching at the beginning of the year.
What are the five things I can do to get in front of clients?
And let me tell you, don't reinvent the wheel every time you sit down to make these lists.
When has it worked for you in the past?
What have you done in the past that's worked? Just bring that back before you

(15:55):
create a new list of five things.
Go back to that original list. Do those things if they worked.
Don't do the things if they didn't work. If you just keep rinsing and repeating
and it's not working, trust me, if you keep doing it, it's just never going to work.
So if it's worked in the past, don't reinvent the wheel. If it hasn't worked

(16:16):
in the past, reinvent the wheel.
Reinvent it. Part of this journey too is being really honest,
really honest with yourself about what have I had on my list as a goal for a
really long time, that maybe that goal is something for me to back burner.

(16:40):
When we talk about focus, it's about honing in on the highest priority things
that are going to make the biggest impact.
And this is really hard for some business owners because it feels like you have
to keep everything open all the time.
You have to keep every idea with, you know, movement forward.

(17:02):
And it's not true. You want to always have a focus so that you can get that
focus over the finish line and then you can maybe create a new focus.
But in your business, if you're always pulling focus, if you're always changing
direction, if you're always moving towards the shiniest object or the thing

(17:24):
that might make you the most money or the thing that is most exciting to you,
you're never going to have the opportunity to connect with the people who want
to connect with you, which is why I keep pulling it back to me and using myself as an example.
But what I want to start doing is really focusing on these pieces of content,

(17:47):
like if we're talking about focus or if we're talking about a career change
journey, I want to do a little bit more deep diving with you all.
I want to talk more thoroughly about these pieces of content so that I'm giving
you like true value where you can say,
all right, I, you know, listen to these four podcasts that Jamie put out about

(18:10):
career change and I understand where she's getting at now.
I understand these tactics. I understand how I can better elevate.
I understand what I can do for myself rather than me popping around all over the place.
One of the things I realized recently too is I have a lot of clients who are
going through burnout, a lot of clients in really similar stages of recognition

(18:35):
that burnout is is a thing for them,
that they're admitting to themselves, wait, this is something I might be.
I might need to work through and look at and accept that could be happening to me.
And what I realized is I have so much great burnout content and it's just all over the place.
It's just like scattered all over the place. And I was telling my clients,

(19:00):
I'm going to just pull all of that content together and share it with you because it's so valuable.
So I want to be able to do a little bit more of these deep dive series with
you on these pieces so that you feel like you're getting more value out of me
because I have a similar issue where I don't stay focused.

(19:23):
Sometimes I get pulled to the content that I think is the shiniest object at the moment.
And maybe what we really need to do is just continue to explore this idea of
what's this this topic at hand?
And how can I really support you through it?
So focus is something that we all, you know, at various times kind of cycle in and out of.

(19:45):
Sometimes we're hyper-focused and sometimes it's really hard to get focused.
And I think it's similar to discipline, except focus requires a little bit more planning.
Focus requires, you know, not just doing the work, but doing it with intention
and doing it with structure and making sure we're not just wasting time and
wasting energy spreading all these seeds everywhere,

(20:09):
what we want to do is like put the seeds in our planter box, right?
If we're just like throwing them into the garden, we might get like a little
carrot over there growing behind the chair, but that's not where we want it, right?
And that's not really going to serve us. We need carrots to be all in the same
place so that when it's time to harvest them, we can find them.

(20:29):
And that's the problem with sort of spreading your energy across multiple things,
it feels really productive.
That's sort of the secret.
Quicksand about it is that we think we're doing the right thing.
We think we're moving things forward.
We think we're being productive, but we're really just throwing seeds and hoping that a few of them stick.

(20:55):
And what we want to do is we want to make a plan.
We want to create the rows for those carrots. We want to plant the seeds.
And then we want to get into a routine of watering them, checking in on them, weeding, right?
We need to have that plan, implement the plan, and then maintain the plan.

(21:16):
So now you have these five things that you're going to focus on, right?
We know what those five things are. We've identified them. We know other priorities
are going to try to get in the way.
We're going to get in the mindset of knowing whatever tries to get in the way,
we're still going to get these five things done without pain or pressure, right?

(21:37):
Of course, something might come up. I just don't want you to have an easy escape
mechanism to get out of them. We want to create new results.
You have these five things. And now what we need to do is get them completed.
So one of the tactics that I I like to use in terms of organizing yourself and

(21:58):
getting yourself ready,
getting the planter box ready for your seeds, is to look at your calendar and
get very real about what can move and what can't move off your calendar.
When I'm teaching people about planning out their calendar, it's like put all
of your health things in there, your exercise, your trips to the gym.

(22:25):
That's immovable, that's number one, that goes into the calendar and everything
else moves around it, right?
Then we have like our family obligations, our kid things that we have to manage,
right? Those things go in second.
And then we start to plan and plot our weeks and,
around those things so that we're not getting caught off guard where,

(22:47):
oh, right, my kid has a dentist appointment and I organized this meeting and
it's one of my five things and I have to do the...
So just sit down on a Sunday night and look at what's coming up in the week.
Make sure you plan out your exercise time, plan out what those family obligations
are, get everything up on the calendar, and then start to put in the tactics

(23:08):
related to these five things.
I mean, hopefully Hopefully these five things are like somewhat dialed down,
but there might be some like subtasks related to them.
So just we're saying you have two weeks.
So just spread those tasks across the two weeks.
Don't try to put yourself into marathon mode where you're like,

(23:29):
I'm just going to put my head down on Tuesday and I'm just going to work for
10 hours and get through this stuff. That's not what we're doing here.
We're creating like longevity in your business.
We're creating sustained focus you
can't really expect yourself to sit
down and stay focused for 10 hours so

(23:49):
spread these things of course you have work obligations as well but I'm gonna
actually have you plan this stuff out ahead of those work obligations because
we want to start shifting our mindset around like these things need to get done
it's not a secondary focus this is a primary focus us.
These are goals we're setting in our careers to get us to the next level of our careers.

(24:15):
And sometimes that might mean sacrificing some of our current workday to make it happen.
Because what happens with everyone is we like to prioritize everybody else's
things ahead of what's important to us.
And we use it as a self-sabotage mechanism too. We're like, but that person
needs that. They need that. They need that. They need that.

(24:38):
Well, yes. And also sometimes they can wait.
So we need to get ourselves trained into the space of, I have to put the things
I know I need to get done on the calendar.
And then I can start to lump on the meetings and the other obligations that I have at work.
But really, I just want you to get in the mindset of knowing that my things can't shift.

(25:03):
My things are non-negotiables and other things have to work around them.
And I know that I say this from a very privileged position of running my own
business, but it's a mindset thing.
It's not something physically you're always going to be able to manage,
but it's a mindset of knowing if I want to get this business off the ground

(25:23):
and I'm still working this job,
there's going to be some need to prioritize certain things if you want different
results, which is launching a business.
If you want to be able to get yourself there, sometimes you're going to have
to make accommodations and you're going to have to...
Push things around a little bit because if you're always prioritizing everything

(25:47):
else and everybody else, you're just not going to get those five things done
and you're not going to have any different results.
So just start with that mindset. If it's hard physically to actually get your
work in there ahead of the other work, that's okay.
It's a work in progress. It's a a journey.
But I want you to just think that way out of the box and see what you can do.

(26:12):
Just see what flexibility is out there. See what things you might be able to ask about or push.
Maybe normally there's a one to two meeting on the books every week.
And maybe you ask if it could be a two to three meetings so that you can have
a longer lunch break for you to either Either exercise or prioritize this side

(26:34):
gig that you're trying to get off the ground.
Whatever it is for you, right? We all have our own version of what that could look like.
But in order to get those five things done,
you're going to have to make some sacrifices and you're going to have to make
the time and know in your mind that these are the things that are important to you to elevate.

(26:56):
Innovate the last thing I'm going to say about this
in terms of like the mindset piece of this shift and
of focus and getting to these goals
is that it's not always going to feel good so I think we've you know we're in
this like Instagram age of you know self-help and everything's happiness and

(27:17):
we have to feel good all the time and it's 50 50 and I've said this a lot 50 percent of the time,
you're not going to feel great in just in your life.
Like that's the average, which means if you are feeling not great about stuff
in your new endeavor or in your current business or in whatever the work situation

(27:40):
is that you're trying to get to this elevated place that you're trying to get to,
if 50% of the time you don't feel good, you're doing it right.
If it's hard, if it's draining, if you don't feel that motivated,
if you're kind of not inspired, you're doing it right.
I don't want you to think that when you get your own business off the ground

(28:03):
or you're growing your business that it's all rainbows all the time.
I can tell you the stressors I have running my own business are totally different
stressors than I had when I was an employee.
I have them. And to me, they're much easier. They're there, but they're.

(28:24):
Minute, what's the word I'm looking for? They're just really tiny.
They're really tiny. They don't overwhelm me or keep me from sleeping,
which is so ironic because I thought I would be really scared about income and
revenue and clients and that that would keep me up at night.
Does not keep me up at night.
The things that keep me up at night are much more related to me.

(28:46):
Not having the ability to basically talk through issues around things that I
think like, you know, need extra attention or whatever,
just not having like that level of autonomy to kind of move things forward when
you feel like people are, you know, teams are suffering or whatever.
Basically that like fighting with leadership teams is what always caused me

(29:09):
that stress that kept me up at night.
So in any case, you want to make sure that you're, you know,
you're being kind to yourself through this process,
but you're not always going to feel like 100% happy or 100% motivated or 100%
inspired by what you're doing in your side gig.

(29:29):
And that's 100% correct.
If you're looking for that and you're like, something must be wrong,
then let's coach on that because that's something else.
If you're having these issues, right? Part of working through these five things
over the next two weeks is partially this idea that sometimes Sometimes you're not going to want to.

(29:51):
Sometimes it's not going to feel fun. And that's the exercise we're in right
now, right? That's the focus.
That's what we're trying to do in this last part of the year is like,
how close to these goals can we get?
It's not a push and it's not a pain, but it is a like, it's going to be uncomfortable sometimes.
I can tell you like when athletes are training for the Olympics,

(30:15):
it is not all roses and rainbows all the time. Like athletes feel great.
They get a lot of, you know, dopamine, right? They're getting a lot of adrenaline.
They're getting like pushed with a lot of like amazing, good feeling sensations
because they're exercising.

(30:35):
But they also don't always feel inspired, right?
They don't show up at practice every day and going, oh, I'm so excited to be here.
Sometimes it's really hard. Sometimes it's hard to show up.
I want you just for two weeks to just say, well, I'm going to show up anyway.
I'm going to show up anyway. And I am too. I'm going to commit to this.

(30:57):
This is something, and this dog agrees.
If you can hear the dog in the background, the dog agrees.
The dog's going to show up too. The dog's ready.
So we're in it together and I think just knowing that you have people behind
you like we're gonna do this together but mainly just that you have your own
back you have your own back if if you can't do it one day because it does feel

(31:22):
like you're pushing yourself too hard or there's pain,
that's when you stop right we're not trying to inflict pain but we know we're
just not always going to feel 100% our happiest, but we're not trying to go into pain.
And it's the same thing with athletes, right? You push yourself,
but if you push yourself to that point of pain, it's time to stop,

(31:44):
right? So we're going to go there.
That's where we're going to take it. We're going to push ourselves to,
and well, I don't want to say push, but like we're going to challenge ourselves to this.
We're going to challenge ourselves to get through these five tasks over the
next two weeks. We're going to show up for ourselves.
We're going to have confidence in ourselves and belief. relief.

(32:04):
And when we get those five things done, we're going to celebrate.
We're not just going to like, okay, now let's roll into the next five things.
That's a high achievers red flag.
So we're going to go for two weeks and then we're going to celebrate and we're
going to feel really good about what we did.
And we're going to make these five things attainable in two weeks.

(32:26):
So if you're like, I want to make a million bucks, unless you've made a million
bucks before, four, don't put that on the list.
What can you reasonably do in two weeks that's moving you towards a bigger goal?
What are those five things that's going to create that inertia that's going
to get you closer to what that end goal is?

(32:46):
I'm going to sit down after this. I'm going to make my list.
I'll post it on the blog. You can see what my list is, what my five things are.
You And this is how we're going to stay focused going into this like kind of,
you know, fresh start, new part of the year, September going into,

(33:07):
you know, the last part of third quarter and the fourth quarter.
This is how we're going to get there.
And it's going to be amazing. And we're going to feel great.
And we're going to look back at this in December and go, oh,
my God, look at all the five things that I've done, right? Every two weeks, five things.
Look at how much I've been able to do and how much closer I am to my goals.

(33:30):
That's the feeling I want to evoke.
That's where we're going with this. So as always, I hope that was helpful.
And I will leave it at that.
Is september the time for you to get
refocused and re-energized and
moving forward towards all of your 2024 goals getting them all accomplished

(33:55):
by the end of the quarter well it's time for you to sign up for coaching let's
