(00:10):
Hi there and welcome to theChallenge to Change podcast.
My name is Hazel and thispodcast is all about the
little changes we can all makethat will have a positive
effect upon planet Earth. Ifyou're new here, welcome. If
you've listened before, welcome back. The Challenge to

(00:33):
Change podcast has beenbrought to you on behalf of
ANSA Environmental Services. To find out more about ANSA,
please visit ANSA.co.uk. Let'sget into the podcast episode.
Before we dive into thispodcast episode, you may have

(00:56):
noticed something of a gapbetween this episode and the
last one, and you may welldetect a slight gravelly tone
to my voice. Well, I have thedreaded lurgy at the moment,
or rather the last vestiges ofit, so apologies for the

(01:16):
rather thrash metal edge to myvoice right now. But illness
aside, further note before wedive in to the podcast
episode. I did say that Iwould provide an update for
people on the outcome of myshampoo bar experiment. Check

(01:37):
out episode 76 of theChallenge to Change podcast to
hear more about that if youhaven't listened to that
episode already. So theoutcome of the experiment,
well sadly it was an epicfail. In summary I attempted
to use purple shampoo bar toadd lilac tones to my hair and

(02:02):
unfortunately it didn'tachieve that. But in fairness
the product is designed toremove yellow tones so I can't
really blame the shampoo barfor not doing something that
it isn't actually designed todo. However as noted in
episode 76 if you buy purpleshampoo that's designed to

(02:22):
remove yellow tones It does dothat if you purchase it in
liquid form. However on theplus side this purple shampoo
bar did do a pretty good jobof washing my hair. So if you
want to try out shampoo barsthen head over to your search
engine and search for purpleshampoo bars and hopefully you

(02:44):
will end up with clean hairtoo. But we have digressed for
long enough. Let's get intothis podcast episode. And this
one is a little bit spookybecause yes we're in October
and Halloween is just aroundthe corner and in fact if
you're very keen oncelebrating Halloween you may

(03:04):
well already have yourdecorations up and be well on
your way to prepping yourHalloween party outfits but if
you're still in the planningstages why not make this
Halloween and every Halloweenthereafter a little bit more
ethical. It's worth checkingout episode 35 of the
Challenge to Change podcastwhich I shared for Halloween

(03:28):
2023 which really does seem solong ago. In that episode I
shared some of the historybehind Halloween so it's
really worthwhile checking outplus of course I've shared
ethical Halloween tips aswell. So let's build on that
episode shared in 2023 withsome more ethical Halloween

(03:50):
tips. So first of all, ifwe're thinking about Halloween
costumes, whether that's forourselves or for children,
let's try and make them moreethical, let's try and make
them more eco-friendly. Soavoiding things like fast
fashion costumes, Avoidingthings that are made from
plastic, unless of course theplastic item in question is

(04:15):
pre-loved, so secondhand.Consider using old clothing to
create your Halloween outfit.Swap costumes with friends and
family. Consider creating aDIY outfit from sustainable
materials. If you head over toyour local charity shop,

(04:36):
there's some You know, fantastic options that you can
purchase there. You can alsohave a look online as well on
eBay, Vinted, Etsy, Deebox,Pre-loved, classified ads and
of course FacebookMarketplace. And as noted,
look for pre-loved orsecond-hand options on there

(04:59):
rather than buying new.Because not only will you save
yourself money but you willhave less of a negative impact
upon planet Earth. It's worthnoting that sometimes for
Halloween outfits, part of thefun is in the preparation. But
if creativity isn't yourthing, you can make it really
easy for yourself by followingAnser on social media. Just

(05:24):
head to social media andsearch for Anser Environmental
Services. You can visithubbub.org.uk. So that's
hubbub.org.uk for inspiration. And if that's really just too
much effort and you think youjust want to make it really
straightforward for yourselfyou could go for the old

(05:45):
classic and cut some eye holesinto an unwanted old white
sheet. So moving on fromeco-friendly costumes we move
into Sweet treats, of courseif you do practice
trick-or-treating or if youallow people or you're happy

(06:07):
for people to visit your housefor Halloween treats then you
can consider of course makingsome yourself using locally
sourced ingredients maybe evenA pumpkin from your garden you
could use to make somewonderful sweet treats. But if
you're purchasing something itis worthwhile considering fair

(06:29):
trade and again looking forthings that are locally
sourced. You might even wantto consider purchasing sweet
treats from a refill store. Sosticking with
trick-or-treating for a momentit's also worthwhile ensuring
that you have a reusablecontainer to put your

(06:51):
trick-or-treat goodies intoand then just simply storing
it away or just usingsomething else from around the
house and repurposing ittemporarily for Halloween and
then keep on using it ratherthan getting something that
you need to throw awayafterwards. And after
Halloween is over, do considerdonating any leftover sweet

(07:15):
treats. So you can donate tofood banks or other programs
that distribute treats tochildren or people in need. Of
course, make sure these aresealed, make sure these are
within date. However, if youdo have some sweet treats that
are open or they are pasttheir best before date, it's

(07:37):
worthwhile Contacting yourlocal food bank to see if they
will take items that are overtheir best before date. Some
of them will, some of themwon't. I think it may well
depend on the size of the foodbank in question. I do know
that the food bank that isnear to me does take in items

(07:58):
that are past their bestbefore date. However,
obviously things that are pasttheir used by date would be
different course. But it willvary. However, if a food bank
isn't an option for you forwhatever reason, a food waste
sharing app is another option.Again, very often on those you

(08:19):
can put things on that arepast the best before date and
sometimes you can even putthings on there that are open.
In some way so you know itmight be I don't know
something that has individualwrapping but the outer
packaging is open somethinglike that so what you tend to
need to do is make that clearwhen you offer the item but

(08:42):
the important point to noticehere to find a way to ensure
that we don't waste thoseHalloween treats we reduce
that waste and we find a wayto help others in doing so as
well. Now let's move intodecorating your house for
Halloween. Of course it'sdefinitely worthwhile opting

(09:03):
for reusable decorations andthen just keep using them year
after year. That is somethingthat we do in our household.
can of course be difficultstoring them depending on how
much storage you have. What Iwould say it's definitely
worthwhile making sure youstore them securely and safely
because I know in the past Ihave fallen foul of putting

(09:25):
decorations away to be usedagain next year and not
actually using bubble wrap orusing you know tissues or
something like that to Whenpurchasing new decorations or
I should say new to youdecorations, charity shops are
a really wonderful place startbut if you can't find
everything that you're lookingfor there

(09:56):
It's also worthwhile headingto places like eBay, vintage
and so on. All of those resellapps that I've already
mentioned, have a look atthose for pre-loved or
secondhand options. However,if you want to save money,
then you can also get creativeand actually make things

(10:16):
yourself to decorate yourhouse. So if you're doing
that, again, consider charityshops for materials where you
can. Consider recycled paperwhere that's a possibility and
then of course try your bestto store those things away
ready again for next year. Socreate them this year, store

(10:37):
them away and then keep onusing them for as long as you
can. Another thing that we cando is consider buying local.
When we're purchasing ourpumpkins so it may be that you
go pumpkin picking or maybeyou just simply go to your
local supermarket or maybe ifyou're really keen on
gardening perhaps you havepumpkins in your very own

(10:59):
garden. Wherever your pumpkinsare from, make sure that you
don't waste them. So we'vepurchased our pumpkin, we've
done our best to get it aslocally to our house as we
possibly can. But what next? How do we ensure that that
pumpkin is not wasted? Well, according to Hubbub, and again

(11:24):
you can find them athubbub.org.uk, From 2022 to
2023 there was a reduction inthe waste of pumpkins based on
their statistics. So head overto their website to find out
more about that. So of coursethat's really fantastic but it

(11:44):
would be wonderful wouldn't itif in 2024 we could do even
more to ensure that thatfigure reduces dramatically.
And one of the ways that wecan do that is choosing to
decorate our pumpkin. As manyof us will already know,
pumpkin carving does tend tolend itself to food waste. It

(12:07):
is quite difficult to carve apumpkin without creating
waste. And unfortunately aswell when people do carve
pumpkins they very oftensimply don't eat them at all
or any part of the pumpkin sothe carving takes place and
those pumpkin innards actuallyjust simply get thrown away
which is not great is it? Whatwe can do to completely avoid

(12:31):
that is choose to decorate ourpumpkin rather than carve it.
And there's lots of ways thatwe can do that. We can
decorate our pumpkins withscary sweets or simply create
a scary design using sweets.Of course if you do this make
sure that you then keep yourpumpkin indoors, maybe in a

(12:52):
windowsill or something likethat. We can decorate our
pumpkin with pre-loved ribbon,pre-loved fabrics, we can make
pom-poms from pre-loved wool.We can paint our pumpkin using
non-toxic paints. This ofcourse only applies if you
plan to peel your pumpkinbefore cooking it. We can

(13:15):
consider edible paints if youplan to cook the pumpkin with
the skin. We can also consideredible glitter as well and
again of course for anythingedible it's probably wise to
put your pumpkin in thewindowsill rather than popping
it outside and of course aswell making sure to use your

(13:36):
pumpkin fairly quickly so thatdoesn't go whilst waiting to
be eaten. And as alreadynoted, finally, once you have
decorated and displayed yourpumpkin don't forget to eat
it. That really is the bestpart. As we know pumpkin is
pretty good for you anddepending on the size of the

(13:58):
pumpkin actually tastes prettygreat. So generally speaking
the smaller the pumpkin Themore pleasant the flavour.
However, if you're going tomake something with the
pumpkin, especially if you'regoing to make something sweet
using the pumpkin, then itprobably doesn't really matter
too much about the flavour ofthe pumpkin itself. So long as

(14:20):
of course it is edible still. It's worthwhile heading over
to ANSA's social media forsome creative pumpkin recipe
ideas. You can also head overto the Hubbub website which
we've already talked about andit's worthwhile also looking
at the Love Food Hate Wastewebsite because there's lots

(14:40):
of pumpkin inspired and autumninspired recipes on there as
well. One of the easiestrecipe ideas actually is to
roast pumpkin seeds. So againeven the pumpkin seeds don't
need to be wasted. It'sactually really quite easy to
To roast them there's lots ofrecipe ideas online but it's

(15:03):
really really quick and easyto do and in fact I've
actually eaten some roastedpumpkins today. Not made by me
but made by someone else inour household and they were
actually really really nice. They did taste like a treat
but they're also prettyhealthy as well and no waste
also so that's great. So thereyou have it. You can enjoy

(15:26):
fearsome fun for Halloweenwithout having a terrifying
effect upon planet Earth. So,challenge yourself to change
for this Halloween and thenkeep on making a difference.
Thank you so much forlistening to this episode and
I will be back really soonwith another episode. Bye for
