Con la llegada de Hugo Chávez al poder en 1998 se abrió una nueva etapa política en Venezuela. La autodenominada Revolución Bolivariana, impulsada por la bonanza petrolera, logró reducir la pobreza y ampliar el acceso a servicios básicos, pero fue erosionando progresivamente la separación de poderes, restringiendo libertades y debilitando las instituciones democráticas.
La deriva autoritaria se acentuó con Nicolás Maduro, quien, tras la muerte de Chávez en 2013, heredó una economía en colapso y profundizó la autocratización del país. La represión, las inhabilitaciones a líderes opositores y el uso partidista de las instituciones han frustrado repetidos intentos de transición democrática, incluida la movilización electoral de 2024, que terminó en una nueva maniobra del chavismo para perpetuarse en el poder.
