In this week’s episode we are honored to welcome Abi Balingit! As the 2024 James Beard Emerging Voice Award Winner, Abi opens up about the success of her first book, Mayumu: Filipino American Desserts Remixed.
From her “Hotline Bling It” blogger days to experimenting with recipes in her low-lit New York apartment, Abi shines brightest as a Do-It-Yourself champion. As a self taught baker, she shares the origins behind The Dusky Kitchen blog and the impact her upbringing in a multigenerational Filipino-American household had on her culinary palate.
For creatives struggling with self-sabotaging perfectionism, Abi encourages us to build habit based strategies and to courageously “own your work.” She also gets candid on the transition from hobbyist to winning career-defining awards and the industry’s commodification of art.
Stay tuned for a sneak peek at Abi’s upcoming project, Trinket Dish! To keep up with Abi, you can follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok (@theduskykitchen) where you can explore new recipes like her Calamansi-Fish Sauce Shortbread Cookies!
