Engang voksede ålegræsset i et kilometerbredt bælte rundt langs de danske kyster. Men i dag er ålegræsset dødt, og iltsvind tager livet af de små fisk og bunddyr, som de store fisk og havpattedyr spiser.
Ålegræsset er grundlag for livet i havet, og gæsterne i dette afsnit håber på, at Den Grønne Trepart bliver det vendepunkt, som bringer livet tilbage i de danske farvande. Men vejen er lang, og forhindringerne mange.
Havet er under pres fra flere fronter: Udledningen af næringsstoffer fra landbruget kvæler livet i havet, trawlfiskeri skader havbunden, og klimaforandringerne gør havvandet varmere.
Så hvad skal der til, før bøgen igen kan spejle sin top i bølgen blå – og ikke bølgen brun? Er Den Grønne Trepart overhovedet nok? Og kan det virkelig passe, at det kan tage hundrede år, måske endda tusind, før alle de nødlidende danske farvande er genoprettet til god økologisk tilstand?
