(00:01):
Here on the radio program,
we talk about the importance of maintenance for everything around your home.
Today,
we're talking about some garage door maintenance.
I've asked a garage door expert.
He's actually my garage door expert.
He comes up to my home and helps me with my garage doors.
Adam Greer from easy lift,
garage doors and more.
Hey,
Adam,
how you doing?
Fantastic,
Joe,
how are you?
I'm fantastic.

(00:22):
Thank you so much for asking regular maintenance and we talk about this all the time,
about all different things.
Ok.
Regular maintenance of your garage door is critical.
Does it really make?
Yeah,
it is.
And,
and,
and so does it really make the garage door or the garage door system last longer?

(00:45):
If you go out,
what,
twice or once a year,
the,
the word makes it last longer.
Uh,
it doesn't extend the life expectancy but the life expectancy,
let's say it's 15 years,
uh,
which is on a good quality door.
That's a good expectancy.

(01:05):
Um,
maintenance will get it to that point and potentially get it past it.
You're gonna need some springs during that.
You're gonna need some rollers during that.
There's gonna be some maintenance stuff,
but basically you can get that door to last,
uh,
to its expectancy and beyond by maintaining.
If you don't do it,

(01:25):
15,
your door is gonna last you a whole lot less.
Sometimes.
Half.
Why,
why is it gonna last less if you don't maintain?
Well,
it's just like your car,
you don't change the oil,
that lights flash that your oil change required and you're 30,000 miles past the mileage,
whistles chain and then all of a sudden it's knocking and it's,

(01:47):
and then it freezes on it because you didn't do what was required that oil matters.
Right.
So,
the same thing,
just simple,
lubrication matters.
You want that door,
it's not a friction.
You want the bearings to be smooth and last,
uh,
so you start throwing bearings on garage doors just like you throw bearings in an automobile.
Um,
people just don't understand that they just think it's just a hunk of metal hangs on the front of my house.

(02:13):
Just keeps the,
the,
the stray dogs out of my garage.
Now,
it's,
it's a pretty important piece of your own.
There are very few things in your home that don't require maintenance.
Some of them is gonna be your sheet rock and your siding,
your,
you know,
your brick facade of your home.
I mean,
these things don't require much.
It's,
you know,
you might want to paint your house occasionally,
but some things just will be there and and,

(02:36):
and you don't have to worry about it.
But think about this,
everybody,
your garage door is moving and it's not one moving part.
Here's a bunch of stuff moving all at once.
Just all the rollers alone.
How many rollers are on the average garage door,
Adam.
Standard garage doors,
10 rollers.
So 10,
10,
he has four rollers.

(02:57):
Exactly.
So,
you've got 10 rollers with multiple ball bearings in there that are moving.
Right.
So you got all that and you've got the drums and the cables are on there and you've got the chain.
Uh,
you can go on and on.
I mean,
there's a lot moving at once and if you don't maintain it,
just one little thing goes wrong.
Adams talked about this before.

(03:18):
If the cable slips off the drum,
for instance,
all heck breaks loose.
It doesn't matter how many rollers are at that point.
Right.
So,
it's everything.
Well,
well,
hey,
I just greased up my rollers last week.
Well,
let's not talk about greasing up rollers.
Please call Adam about lubricating them properly.
Ok.
But,
um,

(03:38):
just because your rollers may be new doesn't mean that you can,
you know,
disregard the other parts of the garage door.
Right.
Right.
Yeah,
you mentioned about grease,
stuffy rollers too.
Uh,
there is every time somebody calls up,
hey,
our doors are we gonna get out there?
I can tell when they are freshly greased and lubricated,

(04:02):
trying to fix what they knew was a problem.
So you're talking about,
man,
all it's,
it's maintaining and I'm looking at,
I'm like I could tell you just put the song before I got it.
In other words,
you have not done it.
You realize?
Oh crap,
I should have.
And you're trying to hide that you did.
We know we know that when you take your car to get your oil changed,
they know if you're way over doing and you just dump some fresh oil in this morning when it was bone dry,

(04:27):
they know and the professionals know that's ok.
Just,
just be honest,
let us help you.
Uh let us teach you.
Yeah,
maintain,
maintain,
maintain.
It goes for everything,
including ourselves,
our bodies,
a lot of people don't,
don't get to the,
you know,
the life expectancy that they're supposed to because they don't take care of themselves either.

(04:51):
It's the same thing and,
and no one wants to put money and time into maintenance doesn't sound like fun.
People want to buy things or invest in things that give them instant gratification that are fun.
There's nothing fun about a maintained garage door now,
I like it.
I get excited because I know when I go to bed at night that it's gonna open up properly tomorrow,
everything else being equal.
Other people who don't and the things 15 years old and it's never been maintained.

(05:15):
There's a good chance any time soon something's gonna pop literally like the spring pop and that's gonna be the end of it until you hire someone to come out and then it's gonna cost more because things will have to be replaced when the garage door guy comes out my garage door guy,
Adam Greer from easy lift,
garage doors and more,

(05:36):
Thanks Adam.
Thank you.
