Pastor Eric (00:32):
welcome to another
episode of FaithCast, Ministry of Faith
Baptist Church in Visalia, California.
And my name is Eric as you can tellby the music, I have a new intro music
I've been wanting to do for a long time.
(00:54):
And I'm excited about this this sound.
It is hopeful it reminds me of
Being in battle and that isexactly what we are We are in a
war And it is a war for souls.
(01:17):
It is a war for what is true It'sa war for our thinking And and
that fight is ongoing all the time.
And that kind of is a, is a goodsegue into what I want to talk about.
In Philippians chapter 3 hesays, Finally, my brethrens,
verse 1, Rejoice in the Lord.
(01:37):
To write the same thingagain is no trouble to me.
And it is a safeguard for you.
Beware of the dogs, beware of the evilworkers, beware of the mutilation.
For we are the circumcision who worshipin the Spirit of God, and boast in Christ
Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.
The flesh is our enemy.
(02:00):
And when we talk about going to war, whatit comes down to is a misplaced worship.
The flesh is promising usconstantly things that we, we
think are worthy of worship.
They're gonna bring us satisfaction.
That's what the flesh is doing allthe time, and it is always with us.
It is always there, being being drawnaway constantly, or, or, or being tempted
(02:25):
constantly to be, to be drawn away.
It is always pulling on us, and andit never goes anywhere that leads us
into actual life and satisfaction.
We cannot put any confidence in the flesh.
This is why Paul goes on in Philippians3 to describe How, if anyone had
(02:49):
any reason to put confidence inthe flesh, he would, because he had
spent his entire life up to the pointwhere he saw Christ, he saw Jesus
he had been trusting in his flesh and hedescribes himself as all about the flesh,
all about doing the works, circumcisedon the eighth day, a Hebrew of Hebrews,
a Pharisee, persecutor of the church.
(03:13):
In verse seven, he says, whateverthings were gained to me, these,
Those things I've counted asloss for the sake of Christ.
More than that, I count all things tobe lost because of the surpassing value
of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, forwhom I have suffered the loss of all
things and count them but rubbish sothat I may gain Christ and be found
(03:34):
in him, not having a righteousnessof my own, which is from the law.
But that which is through faithin Christ, the righteousness,
which is from God upon faith.
And so there's the, the, the counterto putting confidence in the flesh
is to put confidence in Christ.
(03:54):
And that's all about worship.
What we worship.
Either we will worship thethings that, that our flesh
tells us is worthy of worship.
And when we just, when we talk aboutworship, it's, it's putting our
confidence in something and, and lookingto something as if it can provide life
for us or, or satisfaction for us.
It's something that we will, youknow, do anything to get or, you
(04:18):
know, I mean, this is, this iswhat we, we do all of the time.
We find ourselves being pulledaway by this sense of worship.
Now, in our day, we're constantlybeing told that there are disorders,
that there are all kinds of disorders, but there's really one main disorder,
(04:41):
and it's a worship disorder.
And this is exactly whatPaul is talking about.
What are you going to worship?
Are you going to worship things or people?
Maybe it's a pet.
Maybe it's a job.
Maybe it's money.
Maybe it's Education it could bechildren, it could be good things,
(05:01):
it could be family anything thatyou put in the place of Christ is
a, is worship that is out of order.
It is, it is misplaced worship and thisis what we're talking about ultimately.
We are made to worship and inour worship we find satisfaction.
Worship is an act of praise and adoration.
(05:25):
It is something thatwe do because we love.
The thing that we are praising or in, inthe true case, the person that is Christ.
It is a joyful response to who he is.
It is a response to him and his beauty.
I want you to listen to a acounseling case of a lady named
(05:49):
Robin who had been going to alcoholand marijuana to find satisfaction.
And and the answer for her,how do you deal with it?
How do you deal with, with, with whatwe're told is an addiction?\ There's
addictions to, to everything these days.
Well, what is the answer to it?
(06:10):
I want you to listen to this tothis, it's just a couple of minutes.
And I might interrupt and offer somecommentary through it, but but, but I want
you to see how she fell into this trap ofthis worship disorder and how she began to
worship something that she thought wouldbring her happiness and satisfaction and
(06:32):
how in the end it brings her destruction.
She put confidence in her flesh.
And the things that she thought that sheneeded and so I want you to, to, to listen
to this and and see how you fit into thisvery same kind of thing, because this
isn't just about marijuana and alcohol.
(06:53):
We put all kinds of things into thisinto the place where Christ needs
to be, where only Christ should be.
And we worship all kinds of things.
So here we go.
Let's let's listen.
When a person feels stress or anxietyor fear That person is going to run to
(07:15):
someone or something to find comfort andsafety and peace people run to netflix
binges Cheesecake work or the gym, butthey're not just utilizing these items.
They are worshiping them They'reputting their hope and trust in
things You They're worshiping idols.
Robin has been running to alcoholand marijuana for her peace.
(07:37):
That means Robin has a worship disorder.
Alright, here we go intothe actual counseling.
As you look back over yourlife, is there a tendency to
try to escape from pressures?
I think growing up, it was common to meto feel like I just wanted to escape.
I don't know if that wasfrom, you know, my family.
(07:57):
I would see them use pot and alcohol.
And so maybe that's where Iwas shown, Hey, there's always,
you know, a way out, I guess.
It just seemed like it was whatyou were supposed to do almost.
We're never going to escapethe pressures of life.
And that's not God's intent.
It's that in the middle of thosepressures that we would respond in a
(08:20):
way that's honoring to him and faithful.
But I want to show yousomething in Isaiah.
Can you go to Isaiah 55?
Everyone who thirsts come to thewaters and you have no money.
Come buy and eat.
Why do you spend money for whatis not bread and your wages
for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me and eat what isgood and delight yourself in abundance.
(08:43):
Incline your ear and come to me.
Hear that your soul may live and I willmake with you an everlasting covenant.
My steadfast sure love for David.
This craving, this longing, this desirefor relief and satisfaction that we're
searching for it in places, accordingto verse two, that don't satisfy.
(09:05):
It's mind blowing to me how I can knowthe word, read the word, come here
and sit here and hear how you tell it.
And it's like, it's like a wholedifferent way to look at it.
It's almost like light bulbs are goingoff in my head, you know, and things
are, are connecting, you know, cause I'vealways said, God, you're my refuge, but
(09:29):
I've never truly like let them be that.
Yeah.
Good.
And I want to interrupt just for a secondhere and did you catch what she said?
She's reading her Bible but she'snot making these connections.
This is what most people do.
I think when they, when they read theirBible, they're, they're not seeing it
(09:49):
for the the, the profound depth and,and application that it is, how, how
relevant it is to our lives and the,the counselor here, he, he, he went
to Isaiah 55 and he, he nailed it.
This is exactly what our issue is.
All of us.
(10:11):
Everyone who thirsts, well that'severyone, everyone thirsts.
Come to the waters.
You who have no money, come, buyand eat, come buy wine and milk
without money, without cost.
There's this invitation to come intoand to find actual satisfaction.
And the Word of God is, itis this, this source of, of
(10:35):
living water, of satisfaction.
Satisfaction.
And we, we've got to stopreading it as if it's a dead book
and, and see that it is life.
It has what we need.
It has the answers.
It is sufficient.
It is exactly what Robin needed to hear.
So let's continue.
So it's now taking what maybe youknow, or you could get right on a
(10:58):
test and saying, I'm going to go toyou as my refuge and not to alcohol.
So now let's duplicate a scenariowhere the pressures are on.
Maybe you got into anargument with your husband.
Maybe there's familypressures from siblings.
And your response may be to go to alcohol.
In that practical moment, you're saying,I would like some muddy water, please.
(11:24):
Where is the muddy water?
And God, who is the fountainwater, saying, Robin, you're
going over there, but come to me.
My ways are better.
I'm better.
If you're willing to follow the Lord'sprinciples for your life, it's not that
you're saying no to satisfaction, you'resaying yes to a superior satisfaction,
which can only be found in Him.
(11:44):
I gotta stop for a second there.
It's not that you're saying no tosatisfaction, it's that you're saying
yes to a superior satisfaction.
There it is.
There's our problem.
We keep saying yes to lesserthings, to muddy water, to
things that do not satisfy.
(12:06):
That's it.
That's where our worshipdisorder comes from.
We're saying yes to things that, that, that produce garbage, that are, that
are disgusting compared to the, the fullsatisfaction that is found in Christ
and in Christ alone and in his word.
(12:28):
So, we've got to learn to sayyes to the, to the right thing,
to the real source of water.
Here we go, let's continue.
Wow.
I don't like muddy water.
That's good to hear.
I don't know.
I, you know, it's, it's so, it'sso crazy how breaking it down to so
(12:49):
simple can make all the lights come on.
So remember that the next time you'rereaching for something to drink and
think I'm, I'm preparing to drink somemuddy water right now when something far
superior and better is waiting for me.
That's a great tool to now goto Hebrews in the New Testament.
(13:13):
What we have to believe according to thescripture is that if you are truly God's
child, you do not have to give in to sin.
Do you mind reading verse six forus of Hebrews 11 without faith?
It is impossible to please him for hewho comes to God must believe that he
is And that he is rewarded of thosewho seek him a baseline for pleasing
(13:35):
god as faith in jesus christ So howdo you take the next steps forward?
It's through the eyes of faith trustingwhat god says And being willing to obey
what god says even if it's not whatyou immediately feel or immediately
want Step one is to say god is myescape now I'm going to hide in him.
He's going to be my refuge then Andstep two is, I'm not going to drink.
(13:58):
I'm not going to put myself insituations where I can drink.
I'm not going to put myself in asituation where something else or
someone else could take what is God's.
But if I can address these thingsnow and if I can do it with help and
accountability and through counseling, then great, I'll do it that way.
But I am so ready to deal with this that Iwill go to the extreme of checking myself
(14:18):
in to rehab if that's what's needed.
That's the severity that wehave to approach this with.
I'm aware of that.
You ready to do it?
I want to note what he said inHebrews, quoting from Hebrews.
Without faith it isimpossible to please Him.
This is what it comes down to.
(14:41):
If you are a true child of God,
then your life is all about faith.
It's all about faith.
And it's not just a genericsense of faith, but a faith
in something, in someone.
(15:02):
It is faith in the one who created life.
You know, if you had a mechanic, thatwas a really good mechanic, and you
had car trouble, and you brought yourcar to that mechanic, that mechanic,
you would have faith that that mechanicknows what he's doing, is going to
(15:24):
figure out what's going on and fixthat car, that he has the ability.
This Jesus is so much more.
He created life.
He is the source of life.
He created us.
So life comes from him, which meansthat he knows how to give us life.
(15:45):
And not only does he know how,but he promised that he would.
So this all comes down to faith.
Are you going to believethat God's word is true?
Are you going to believe that JesusChrist is fully satisfying, that he's
better than muddy water, that he'sbetter than the thing that you're running
(16:08):
to, to escape the pressures of life?
And there's so manythings that people run to.
And you have to come to the point whereyou, by faith, say, Jesus is better.
He is far greater.
He is more fully satisfying.
And that's step one.
(16:29):
And then he mentioned step two.
You have to make noprovision for the flesh.
And in Robin's case, she needs to go detox.
She needs to pull away from this awhile so she can hopefully remove
some of the, the, you know, soit's not right in front of her.
The temptation isn't there.
And so for her, going to rehabis a good, a good solution.
(16:52):
But ultimately it is an act offaith that Jesus Christ is enough.
And so I am going to do whateverit takes to get rid of this thing
that is, that, that, that is causingme to find dependence on my flesh
and into and to not befully satisfied in Christ.
(17:13):
We have to do this becausewe're hurting ourselves.
This is, this is the only way that we'regoing to get this worship back in order.
Let me let me continue here.
Let's talk about church.
Your church involvement, ithas to change in a few ways.
(17:34):
You need a, you need a local bodyof Christ to surround yourself with.
Because you can't be the Iwithout the rest of the body.
You need the body ofChrist and they need you.
One of the things that I What I want tohelp you do is get connected to a local
church, a place where you're going tofind long term care so that two years
(17:54):
from now, three years from now, youcan forget about all the things that
you and I have talked about, but you'reconnected to a local church and you're
able to say, this is the place whereI'm finding meaningful, ongoing care.
Are you open to doing that?
Yes.
So the importance of the church there,I think that, Biblical counseling
(18:16):
is a work of the local church.
And in, it sounds like in this case,Robin is not connected to a church.
And so she's come for help and andthe counselor is pushing her toward
church because he recognizes that thatis God's means of grace for change.
(18:37):
And this is so true.
If God is the source of life, and ifHe is the one who knows how to satisfy
us and if he is the one, Philippianssays, that works in us both to will
and to do, then we have to be willingto obey him and to follow his plan.
(18:57):
And church is primary.
And by church, I mean a godly churchwhere the men where men are leading and
they're shepherding and they're, andthey're, and they're able to bring people
to the word of God and to show themwhat it says about how they should live
and how they should respond in faith.
(19:17):
A biblical church thatis all about exegeting.
That is teaching the scripture, teaching God's ways, making
the word of God come alive.
That's so vital and so many people pullaway from the church and that's, that's
pulling away from the spirit's power.
That's pulling away from, fromGod's plan and he commanded us
(19:41):
not to forsake the the fellowship.
And and so if, if you are a believer.
then by faith you will, you willtake these steps of obedience and you
will take seriously the, the, theseworship disorders that you have.
This is, this is all about finding truelife and true satisfaction and true joy.
(20:04):
And this is such a big deal that werecognize that all of the things that
we worship are just substitutes for theone who's actually worthy of worship.
There's so many idols, so manyways that we fall into the trap.
And and it is by faith, we need torecognize that God is the only one
(20:30):
that is worthy worship and thatChrist alone is fully sufficient.
So that I hope that that is helpfulto you and encouraging to you and and
help you work through some of these.
These worship disorders that, thatyou might have, that you do have, I, I
have no doubt that you would be eagerto put off these things that, that
(20:56):
these sins, that easily beset you that, that, that trip you up that you put no
confidence in the flesh and that youfind Christ Jesus worthy that you may
know him in the power of his resurrectionand the fellowship of his suffering.
Of being conformed to his deathso that you might obtain to the
resurrection From the dead real lifeLife that begins now and into eternity
(21:38):
