This is a summary of what to expect from the continuation of the podcast Full-time Photographer initially started by Josh Rossi. This is the beginning of a discussion between two photographers, asking questions about origin, intent, talking shop, and picking brilliant minds. This discussion is for professionals practicing their craft full-time. (00:00):
Welcome to full time photographer.
I'm your new host,
John Stone.
This is a continuation of Josh Rosie's podcast that he did 300 episodes of.
And it was something super inspiring to me.
Something I really look forward to listening to on a pretty regular basis.

(00:23):
And I got a lot of inspiration from it and it kind of gave me a good place to,
to kind of like try new things because I've always felt like most pads are already paved and there's really no reason to unless you absolutely have to like trail blaze.
Uh So,
uh I liked a lot of the methods they were tried and true and I kind of use it as a road map.

(00:45):
So when I went on kind of exploration via internet one day,
I was like,
man,
I really want to listen to this,
this podcast from Josh.
And uh I was looking for the one from Hall Spint because he had done another talk with uh sorry,
he did an interview with the A P A.
It was an awesome conversation to get to listen to.

(01:06):
So I was like,
man,
I want to listen to that podcast again,
just see what I can get out of it because I can't remember kind of everything that he said.
And uh Hollis is super big on personal work and that's something that I know I need to work on.
So I just,
I just needed to hear something and uh looked up,
couldn't find it,
reached out to Josh Rosy via Instagram and he kind of gave me his blessing from what I can gather.

(01:30):
I mean,
he seems super busy.
He said he's moved a few times.
Can't find the podcast.
It was a little bit disappointing.
So I was like,
damn it.
All right.
Well,
I think this is it.
I think this is what,
what we're missing because I know there's a lot of other photographers podcasts out there,
but it doesn't address things that Josh was doing beforehand and he really made you feel like you were sitting in an intimate conversation.

(01:50):
So,
what I wanna do is I want to bring that same thing back because it seems like there's a lot of podcasts for just marketing in general or,
you know,
wedding photographers or whatever.
And there's not a place I feel like for commercial photographers or advertising photographers.
And I really love that space.
I think there's so much that goes into it.
I remember listening to,
I mean,
so many different professions that they really helped me figure out all the different aspects that go into this.

(02:17):
I,
I was always I always took something away from every episode.
So I'm hoping to bring that same thing back into light because I don't remember how many years I guess I can look and see.
I think the last episode was aired in 2016.
So it's been a minute and it's something that I wanna,
I'm dying to have that so I couldn't find it.
So we're gonna make it.

(02:38):
The questions in the format of the podcast were really simple.
It was like a 30 minute conversation.
It was kind of formatted the same way every time.
And I really like that made it very digestible.
It was kind of a who are you,
where are you from?
What do you do?
What's the market like there?
How did you get started and then get to hear the stories of these people,

(03:01):
you know,
going like,
hey,
I lived in this small town in,
you know,
anywhere USA and I ended up moving to Nashville or I ended up moving to Los Angeles or I ended up moving to New York and cutting my teeth and learning this and being on set with these people.
This is how I met.
So and so,
and I formed connections this way.
I love to hear those stories.
Those are always so cool.

(03:22):
You know,
he would ask questions like,
how long have you been doing photography?
What do you primarily shoot and getting to hear from so many different,
like,
you know,
I think Joshua is a composite photographer.
So then we got to hear from,
I'll say other commercial photographers,
advertising photographers,
uh product photographers,
what they were doing to stay ahead of the curve.

(03:44):
He would ask questions like,
where do you primarily find your clients?
Which is always a huge question for anybody.
I feel like that's what everybody wants to do.
They want to find better clients,
they want to find bigger clients.
They wanna keep,
keep learning,
keep growing,
keep exploring and continue to do what they love.
Because I mean,
there's nothing more satisfying than,

(04:05):
than making,
I think a good image or making your,
your client really excited about what you're doing.
I always found that to be a really interesting question.
I think all these questions would lead to these little pocket stories about some disaster that happened on set in some way that they were able to rectify the situation and make it,
make it a good thing or like learn a lesson from it like,

(04:27):
oh,
well,
now I never,
you know,
now I have to be of the same lenses or now I keep uh this camera just constantly charge or whatever.
I think we've all kind of been in a situation where like damn,
my battery is gonna die and I don't have a charger or my SD card is full.
What do I do?
Or this one's busted or whatever?
And you're in the middle of nowhere,
there's not a place to go buy something like that,

(04:48):
you know,
and,
and then you're like,
what do I do?
So you end up shooting it on your phone or somebody has some really old slow card and you get to take one picture like every five seconds and it takes forever and it's just really frustrating and scary or,
or even like the,
maybe the file size is so big that it just eats up the card and you get,
you know,
20 images,

(05:08):
like you're shooting film or something.
But I always found the most interesting question to be and,
and it was cool to hear how many different variations and answers that Josh would get from this question.
But I think it's so important,
especially when you're marketing yourself because so much of your money is wasted.
What's the saying?

(05:28):
Like 50% of your marketing works or something?
And you never know which 50% it is.
But he would always ask the question,
what would you do with $1000 if that's all you had to spend on marketing or if I gave you $1000 and you can only spend it on marketing,
what would you do?
And some of the answers were just so wild and I wish that I could find those podcasts and like,

(05:51):
because that's the part that I want to know,
you know,
and,
and it's always the money,
it's kind of just like these creative ways to set something up or do something.
So that's kind of probably a lot of rambling about what I'm,
I'm looking to do with this as a continuation from what was already,
you know,
in existence and worked well.
Unfortunately,

(06:12):
the files have been lost.
You know,
they're,
they're not recoverable or they're not.
So because of that,
I feel like this is something that I wanna do I need and I know that will help other people.
So I look forward to putting this show out on a uh you know,
maybe a biweekly basis as soon as I can get some people lined up and get the hang of it.

(06:33):
If you know anyone that wants to be on the show or if you want to volunteer to be on the show,
I would love to hear from,
I would love to hear from people that are interested in kind of occupying the space or if you have a suggestion of somebody that you'd like to hear from,
just drop me a line.
My email is John Jon at john stell dot com.
It's jonstell dot com.

(06:55):
I'm gonna wrap this up to keep it short and sweet.
I look forward to the next episode which I'm going to have my first guest,
Bobby Altman on,
he's a commercial photographer in the Myrtle Beach area.
He has done quite a few things.
He's mentored me,
which is makes it super easy to link with him.

(07:18):
And I'm,
I'm really excited about this discussion.
I'm sure he has a lot of like valuable insights because I'm still learning and I'm still trying to figure this all out.
I'm going to leave a link in the bio of my email address that I spelled out earlier,
my website where you can look at my work,
you can reach out to me through just about any one of the platforms.

(07:40):
I'm more active on Instagram than anything else.
But I do tend to check if you want to connect with me there.
I will have that information below and I look forward to the next episode.
