(00:00):
I love this time of year because it's not hot yet.
And I really like the winter a lot.
Um,
but when spring comes and everything starts to bloom,
it's great.
So I get my pool and my pool deck and my outdoor kitchen all set up and my grill and this is the time of year before it gets too hot.

(00:24):
My family and I can spend time outside.
Buy the fire pit if you don't have one and you've always wanted one because who doesn't want one?
You can smoke cigars,
drink beer,
drink wine out there.
Have a family picnic around the,
the,
uh,
fire pit.
If you've always considered one,
you need to listen and watch this podcast.
I've asked Russell Metzler from gas product service to join me today here on the program to talk about it because he is an expert in gas products.

(00:53):
Russell,
how are you?
Hey,
Joe,
how's it going?
I'm doing great.
Thanks for coming on.
All right,
you're the gas product expert.
Uh,
we've talked about many,
many different things.
We've talked about this subject before in the past which are fire pits.
Some people have just a hole in the ground and they throw wood in it and they burn that except that's not really practical.

(01:18):
Especially for a lot of us who live in the suburbs and so forth.
It's really better to have a custom built pit that has all of the inner workings.
So,
gas,
whether it's propane or natural.
I love natural though,
hyped in.
And now you just have to basically flip a switch or turn the gas on and strike a match and you've got a fire in your fire pit.

(01:45):
Yep.
Absolutely.
The fire pit can be incorporated into the,
the decking out on the back patio.
Uh,
it could be a round or square.
It doesn't matter what it is.
Whatever you,
you know what,
whatever you can,
can conceive,
you can,
you can,
uh create and,
and we could come in and bring gas into it and put burners in there so that you can just fire it up and it burns until you turn it off.

(02:14):
Um,
usually these things have some depth to them.
They're,
you know,
they're oh knee high or so,
or maybe halfway up to your knee from the ground.
And so,
uh,
what we would do is we would build a platform inside the structure that,
um,

(02:34):
is elevated almost to the top,
maybe within a couple of inches of the very top of the structure.
And then the burner or the burners would be just above that platform.
And so then we would cover that platform with some kind of median.
It would either be lava rocks or we have a variety of different types of glass products.

(03:01):
Little like little beads or little chunks of glass and they come in all different colors and we could fill it in that way to cover the burner.
So you're not,
you're not burning wood or,
or,
or uh leaves or anything.
You're just the gas is what's burning.
But as the flames come up through this medium it spreads out and it has some flickering,

(03:26):
glittering look to it.
And it's really a cool thing.
Um,
especially on these,
uh,
evenings lately that we've had a little bit of cool weather and,
and folks can get out and enjoy the backyard.
It's simple.
It's practical.
It doesn't cost a lot to run it because it's natural gas.

(03:46):
Yes.
You're gonna be burning gass at a pretty high rate versus when you're,
uh,
using your water heater,
for instance.
But in the end it's a lot cheaper than having wood delivered and burning wood and spending a lot of time doing that.
And really your neighbors aren't gonna appreciate you burning wood in the backyard.
So it's better to,
you know,
to burn the gas.

(04:06):
Um,
do most of your product options,
allow for a control on it for more or less gas for a larger or smaller flame.
Yes,
absolutely.
There's a valve you turn it up or down and so you can make,
then that would cause the flames to go up and down.
And also you ask about control.
We can incorporate automation into this so that you don't have to strike a lighter or a match.

(04:32):
Uh It could be set up where you just flip a switch on the wall or,
or push a button on a remote control device.
Um Some of these,
uh some of the fire pits that we've done have timers on them where you like turn a knob,
you turn it to,
you know,
10 minutes,
20 minutes,
30 minutes and so on.
And then it counts back down and when it gets back to zero,

(04:55):
the fire goes out.
And that's kind of cool for um,
like if you,
um you know,
you,
you walk away from it,
you for,
you go back inside and forget that it's on,
it turns itself off that way and that's kind of a handy thing.
Great,
great.
All right,
everybody I know you're excited if you don't have a pet,
maybe you have an old one and that just needs to be reconstructed and have all the parts put back in it.

(05:21):
Well,
I'm telling you,
Russell is the guy from gas product services.
He's been doing this for over three decades.
All of Russell's contact information,
including his phone number and direct links to his website are in the description of this podcast.
Thanks Russell.
Appreciate it,
buddy.
Thanks.
See you later.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
