Wenn man heutzutage den Begriff „Lehnswesen“ hört, denkt man schnell an dramatische soziale Ungleichheit im „finsteren Mittelalter“, an böse Lehnsherren und arme Bauern, an Leibeigenschaft, Ausbeutung und Gewalt. Inwiefern ist diese klassische Sichtweise auf das Lehnswesen jedoch noch zeitgemäß? Gab es im Mittelalter überhaupt ein Lehnswesen? Oder gibt die Lehnspyramide nur ein falsches Bild der Ständegesellschaft wieder? Darüber sprechen Carolin Heß und Tobias Rotzinger mit Steffen Patzold, Professor für Mittelalterliche Geschichte und Historische Hilfswissenschaften an der Universität Tübingen, und erläutern was es mit Wörtern wie Treue, Schutz und Lehen auf sich hat. Hierbei wird deutlich, dass das sicher geglaubte Wissen über das Lehnswesen, wie es auch in der Schule gelehrt wurde, in Frage gestellt werden muss.
