(00:00):
I had to remind myself that no matter how meticulously we plan,
life can life and be really unpredictable.
Music.
Hello, Grown Girl Gang. Welcome back to the Girl With No Now podcast.
I am your host, Victoria, and I am so happy that you are here.

(00:23):
If you are looking for tips, advice, and or inspiration, then you are in the right place.
This podcast was created to help you navigate life and live your most fulfilled and authentic life.
This week, we are in a new month, which means a new series.
Before I get into what this month's series is about, I want to let you all know

(00:47):
that I am switching the podcasting format. Matt.
So after the month of May, we will not be having monthly series every month.
I will have series likely every other month or every few months.
The reason being is that I just feel like it's a little bit limiting.
Sometimes something will happen in my life or I will have a conversation with

(01:10):
one of my friends and I'll really want to bring it to the podcast.
But if I'm in a series that's not aligned with the topic that I want to bring
to the podcast, I usually will have to wait.
And by the time I wait, the next month comes along.
I just like I don't have that same passion and same desire to talk about that topic.

(01:31):
So I think I am really missing out on that opportunity.
So that is why I will be doing
series some months and other months I will just leave open to really have different
kinds of episodes and really be able to bring episodes to the podcast that are
top of mind and that align with situations that I may be dealing with because

(01:51):
that means that some of you all may also be dealing with similar situations.
So I think it really will be a good balance of series and not having series.
So I'm really excited to start that the month of June.
Okay, so this month we are doing a mindset series and I love good mindset episodes
because truly our mindset is everything.

(02:13):
It really dictates how we move through life.
So today I'm going to start the series off talking about my chaotic travel slash
Airbnb situation that I had a couple of weeks ago. I...
Hinted at it in the intro of my last episode, but really just this situation
reminded me about the importance of having a resilient and adaptable mindset

(02:38):
because you just never know what's going to happen.
So most of us know that Mercury was in retrograde for most of April and it was also eclipse season.
So we just know that things got a little bit weird.
And I will say that for me personally, the last few days of Mercury being in
retrograde, I was just really feeling it.
And I I was so ready for just this season of whatever you want to call it.

(03:01):
Just I was ready for it to end.
So a couple of weeks ago, I arrived in Montreal and I typically don't stay in
the same Airbnb more than once because I want to experience different parts of the city.
And that is exactly what I did with this current trip.
I picked an area I never stayed in and I booked the Airbnb months in advance.
So I got there in the afternoon. noon. I went to check into my Airbnb because

(03:26):
check-in time's usually around 3 p.m.
And you guys, it was so dirty.
It literally looks like someone had just left it that morning and it wasn't clean.
It was super clear that there was zero effort put into cleaning the place.
There was pet hair everywhere, a dirty fridge, microwave, mold on the kitchen
sink, and just clearly not ready for a guest to come and stay for over a month.

(03:49):
And definitely not giving the attention that an Airbnb should.
Especially considering the prices that we pay for these things.
So that was so frustrating.
So the first thing I did was reach out to the host. I sent her pictures and
the host just wasn't helpful at all. She took her time to respond.
And in Montreal, a lot of places on the weekends close at five.
So what I needed was someone who took their Airbnb more seriously and understood

(04:14):
the urgency of needing to have a quick solution, especially since there was
like no cleaning supplies in the house.
So if I needed to go get some, or if she could send a cleaning person,
like whatever, I just needed her to have more of a sense of urgency.
And she didn't, she literally just responded to the pictures and was like,
oh, I can see that the Airbnb is not an A1 condition.

(04:35):
You know, my cleaner came yesterday, but clearly she missed a few things.
So what I can do is reimburse you the cleaning fee.
You guys, she sent me $22 and said that was the cleaning fee,
which is wild because when I went to the store and looked at cleaning supplies
and literally I went to Dollarama, which is their dollar store.
And of course, not everything's a dollar, but to buy cleaning supplies, it was over $22.

(05:00):
So we all know that there was no cleaning service that would have anything.
Cost her $22. And truly she just acted like it wasn't a big deal and that it
wasn't something that needed to be handled.
She was like, well, I reimbursed you the cleaning fee. So enjoy your stay.
And I was like, nope, not doing it. So I decided that I didn't want to stay

(05:21):
in this dirty place because it would take too much energy and effort to clean
it because it really needed a deep clean.
And I don't feel like I should have to deep clean a place that I'm paying this much for.
And also it was just like I didn't like
her response so I just didn't think that I wanted to give
her my business so I left the place and
I decided that I was just going to work with Airbnb to get a refund so I don't

(05:44):
know if any of you guys have ever tried to get a refund from Airbnb for a dirty
Airbnb but it was so frustrating literally Airbnb support is definitely more
on the side of the host for whatever reason,
I had to call Airbnb support seven times in the span of seven hours.

(06:05):
So basically I called every hour and demanded a refund before they actually
gave me a refund, which made the situation even more frustrating than it already
was because I truly wasted my first day in Montreal dealing with this.
As someone who travels pretty regularly, Clearly, this is the first experience
I had like this and I really wasn't sure what to do.

(06:27):
Luckily, I know people in Montreal that I was able to stay with for a couple
of days so that I could come up with my plan B.
But if not, the situation would
have felt even more frustrating because I would have had to book a hotel.
And that's something I actually talked to Airbnb about.
And they said that they could only cover 20%. And I just know that if I chose

(06:49):
to stay in a hotel for a few days, I would have just wasted another day or two
fighting with them or recovering my hotel fees. So I just was like, you know what?
Not doing it. My friend was gracious enough to let me eat it with her, with all of my luggage.
Literally, I was towing around two huge bags, a carry-on roller bag,
and then another carry-on personal bag-sized item. So it was just a lot of stuff.

(07:14):
All in all, the situation really reminded me of how important it is to be able
to adapt Adapt when necessary and how easy it is to get in a both me head space
because when things are going wrong,
especially when it seems like things are piling on top of each other and going
wrong, it's just not a great feeling.
And it's so easy to just really adapt.

(07:35):
Get into that despair kind of mindset. So I had to remind myself that no matter
how meticulously we plan, life can life and be really unpredictable.
I booked and planned this trip months in advance and I do this all the time.
At this point, I've come to Montreal a lot. So I'm in this routine of planning

(07:56):
ahead and just things going as planned.
And I was not expecting this. And my My first two weeks in the city,
I was literally moving back and forth with all of that luggage in tow,
but I had to realize that, you know what, this kind of sucks,
but it's not the end of the world and that there's so much power in being able
to be resilient and adapt.

(08:18):
And it really just is so huge to be able to do that no matter how big or small your situation is.
So I want to talk about three crucial things that we all need to have to be
able to overcome overcome challenges and really lean into a resilient and adaptable mindset.
So the first thing is to really be willing to pivot when necessary.

(08:40):
So again, no matter how big or small your situation is, all of these things are going to be crucial.
So I want you to think of a situation that was unpredictable.
It was a challenge and it was frustrating and how if you use these things,
it would have really helped in that situation.
So again, it does not matter if the situation is big or small because that's all relative to you.

(09:00):
So this situation reminded me the fact that sometimes things don't go as planned,
but that is okay because it may be leading us to something better.
In my case, it did lead me to a better situation.
Yes, I had two weeks of time that I had to adapt, but where it led me was a
beautiful place that I'm staying in currently.

(09:22):
It's really amazing. It's in a great part of the city. The views are great.
And honestly, it's better than I could have imagined.
But before I got to this phase, I was so frustrated.
I was full of anxiety and I really was in my head. Pivoting when things go wrong,
it's more of an art versus a skill.
It requires the courage to let go of our attachment of our initial plan or desired outcome.

(09:45):
And it really will force you to embrace the unknown with an open mind and a willing heart.
When plan A veers off course, it's easy to freak out, trust me,
I did it, and get into this woe is me mindset.
It can be a lot harder to see the hiccup or mishap that you are currently in

(10:06):
as an opportunity to explore new possibilities, to innovate.
To grow, and to make lemonade out of lemons.
Sometimes when you have to pivot, things will feel worse and maybe even even
more chaotic before things get better.
But having the mindset and affirming for yourself that everything that is happening

(10:26):
to you is happening for a greater good that is going to be better than what
you thought things were going to be.
If we aren't willing to pivot when things don't go as we expect,
we are going to miss out on the things that may be for us and the things that
we are grasping and holding onto are really going to be less than what we could

(10:47):
have had had we really leaned into these challenges and been able to pivot.
The second thing is that it's okay to have a plan B.
This situation taught me that having a plan B is not a sign of doubt or lack or confidence.
It's really just a measure of foresight and being prepared because hiccups and

(11:07):
mishaps of a larger magnitude, like when you were going to stay in a place for
six weeks, can be super challenging for people like me who are more of the planner type.
I literally see people book last minute hotels and plan everything at the last second.
And I am so in awe of how it works out for them.
But I am also usually like, no, can't be me because I would literally break

(11:32):
out in hives. Like, no, thank you.
I would prefer to plan things in advance and just have peace knowing that I
have all my plans in place, especially when it comes to like where I'm going
to stay. And as far as activities, I'm a lot more flexible.
But I think big things like that are a big deal for me to have planned.
But I have realized that it could be good to loosen the reins a bit sometimes.

(11:53):
While naturally our initial plan is our ideal plan, plan B can serve as our
safety net offering reassurance and stability for when that ground shifts from beneath us.
Having a plan B as a safety net to catch us is so comforting and so reassuring.
It's really not about abandoning our initial plan or letting anxiety get the best of us,

(12:18):
but rather acknowledging that the journey of life is rarely linear and it requires
adaptability a lot of the time.
The third thing is checking our mindset.
A lot of times our mindset is going to change depending on the situation that
we are in. The mindset we choose to adopt in the face of challenges and when

(12:41):
things are not going our way is so crucial.
It's super easy to succumb to the what was me mindset or the victim mentality
or to even dwell on what went wrong and lose sight of the opportunities and
solutions that we could use. It can be so defeating.
I know for me and my situation, I was so frustrated and over it that I thought

(13:06):
about just going home. But had I done that.
I would have been so bummed that I didn't
just pause and take the time to figure out a better solution because I had been
looking forward to my trip for months and it would have sucked if I let a bad
Airbnb experience be the reason that my trip was ruined and it really would have not been great.

(13:33):
I know I would have been down in the dumps about it. So I am really happy that
I had friends to help me, but also that I was able just to pause,
take a breath, not freak out and go into full panic mode and really make a rash decision.
But I took the time to figure out my plan B in the moment because truly everything is figureoutable.
I think a lot of times we can psych ourselves out when we are in panic mode.

(13:57):
True resilience lies in our ability to reframe our perspective,
to see setbacks not as roadblocks, but as detours and a roadmap that is guiding
us toward our greater destination.
I literally, as I said earlier, ended up in the coolest part of the city,
in my opinion, and the most beautiful place that I have ever stayed in so far in Montreal.

(14:18):
Like it's so my vibe and really just being here with the setup of this place.
It has like dim lights at night, which is so good for like this whole health routine that I'm on.
And it has huge windows where it brings so much daylight in the daytime.
And literally like this place just
feels so good to be in. But of course, I didn't see that at first when I was

(14:40):
going through the chaos and I had just, you know, had an Airbnb situation that felt super chaotic.
And I felt like, wow, this trip is just really starting off not so great.
And I'm kind of nervous as to what that means for the rest of my trip.
But again, I'm just so happy that I did not let this mishap I've changed my

(15:00):
mindset to the point of ruining my whole trip.
And actually, there's a fourth thing that I want to mention.
So we have to be willing to give ourselves a break.
I was so, so hard on myself because I felt like, wow, I had a lot of plans and I have so much to do.
And having to figure out this whole situation is just throwing a wrench in my

(15:21):
plans and I don't like it.
And I kind of didn't want to deal with it because it was delaying things that
were really important to me. And it took my time and attention away from things
that I needed to focus on, like work and things that I wanted to focus on, like this podcast.
But in the midst of the chaos and uncertainty, I realized that I needed to give

(15:41):
myself permission to take a break, to rest if I need to, to not stay up to the
wee hours of the night trying to get everything done. Because I knew I was distracted.
Like, how could I not be? but I knew that I still needed to try at the bare
minimum to get a good night's sleep so that I could be somewhat recharged for the next day.
I had to tell myself that it was okay that I wasn't going to be able to get

(16:05):
everything done because I was crashing at a friend's place.
I was full of anxiety because I was spending all of my free time trying to look
for a place while still trying to make the most of enjoy the moments that I
was having on my trip and with my friend but hadn't seen in a while.
Also, I was really stressed looking at Airbnbs because I wanted to figure out

(16:25):
a solution where I didn't have to change my Airbnb like too many times during
my trip because that's the thing about long stays.
Like that's why I booked my long stays in advance because the later you wait,
it's harder to find an Airbnb in an ideal location that is your ideal type of Airbnb last minute.
So really just all of that was like just on my mind. And so I was just really

(16:50):
unfocused and anxious and it was not great.
But again, I had to give myself permission to take a break and to know that
I wasn't going to get everything done and I wasn't going to be at 100% productivity.
But that was okay because firstly, we are not machines programmed to operate
tirelessly without pause. We are human beings.

(17:11):
We are susceptible to things going wrong, to fatigue, stress.
Burnout, anxiety, all the things.
And so taking a step back really allowed me to gain clarity,
perspective, and really a renewed energy to understand.
One, find a solution, but to also use that energy to refocus on my priorities

(17:32):
once I came up with my plan B and I had everything mapped out again.
So while I would have loved for everything to go as planned on this trip,
I now in hindsight, I'm so glad that it didn't because I know that one,
it led me to this beautiful space that I'm so happy and comfortable in.
And two, I know that that it is leading me on a better journey and a better

(17:57):
path to whatever is in store for me on this trip.
So if you are in a situation where things are not going as planned,
I want you to take a deep breath and really remember these tips that I have just given.
Give yourself a break. Check your mindset so that you can make sure that you
are keeping a resilient and adaptable mindset.

(18:18):
Embrace your plan B and be okay with pivoting because the odds are you are being
led to a better situation and outcome.
And most of the times it takes a moment for us to realize that and that is okay.
But just knowing that everything that is happening for you right now is for your good.
