(00:00):
Now, I want to read a few portions of Scripture, all in Mark's Gospel, please.
That I will read in Mark's Gospel, maybe just a verse or two in chapter 2. Mark chapter 2.
And I'll just skim through a few of these passages that have been upon my mind.

(00:21):
Mark chapter 2, and it's concerning the Lord Jesus.
Verse 1, He entered into Capernaum. after some days, and it was noised that he was in his house.
And then verse 3 says, And they
came unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was born of four.

(00:42):
And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was.
And when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
And just the end of verse 5, the Lord Jesus could say, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

(01:02):
Then over to chapter number 5 and verse 1, And they came over onto the other
side of the sea into the country of the Gadarenes.
And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs
a man with an unclean spirit who had his dwelling among the tombs.

(01:24):
And no man could bind him,
no not with chains because that he
had been often bound with fetters and chains and the
chains had been plucked asunder by him and the fetters broken in pieces neither
could any man tame him and then we read about him dwelling amongst the tombs
and verse 6 when he saw Jesus he far off he ran and worshipped him cried with

(01:50):
a loud voice and said what have I to do with thee Jesus Jesus,
thy Son of the Most High God.
And the Lord Jesus replies, verse number 8, For he said unto him,
Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
And down, just for the sake of time, we'll read it first, down to verse number 15.

(02:13):
And they came to Jesus and see him that was possessed with the devil and had
the legion sitting and clothed and in his right mind.
Frightened and they were afraid and
then verse 18 and when
he was come into the ship he that had been possessed with the

(02:34):
devil prayed him that he might be with him how
be it jesus suffered him not but saith unto
him go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the lord hath done
for thee and hath compassion on thee and then we'll just skip over maybe to
chapter number 10 There's quite a few other verses we could have read, but we'll refer to them.

(02:59):
Chapter 10, we'll read number 22.
The young man who had come to the Lord Jesus, and he was, verse 22,
he was sad at that saying, and he went away grieved, for he had great possessions.
And then further down the chapter, verse number 45,

(03:20):
faith for even the son of man came not
to be ministered unto but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many
and then we will read or we could read the little story concerning Bartimaeus
which follows on afterwards but I think that's all we'll read and trust with the

(03:42):
Lord's blessing on the reading of his own precious word.
Now, just for a few moments, I want you to stop and think for a moment.
In fact, this last few days, what has really been upon people's mind over the past week,
people have been talking a lot, as you would know, about the D-Day landings

(04:02):
and the battle for Normandy and all those things connected with the Second World War,
I had visited the site maybe a few weeks ago and looked at them and stood in
one of the graveyards with nine and a half thousand young men buried in the one graveyard.

(04:24):
Very, very touching to think of
the young men who gave their lives for a cause and who crossed across the sea
following orders and yet seeking to bring liberty and freedom to those who were
oppressed and those who were held captive.

(04:45):
You know I'm not here to give you a lesson on military history.
I want you to stop for a moment, friend, and I want you to think about not a
military conquest or not an army that has come.
I just want you to think, and it has been upon my mind in the past days,
I want you to think of a person that has come, the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

(05:09):
We're not here to tell you about great nations.
We're here to tell you, friend, about a great person, a person who has come
to give his life a ransom for many.
This is the one, friend, that we want to tell you about another time this evening.
And likely as you sit in the gospel meeting or out in the car or wherever,

(05:31):
and you're likely thinking, well, we've heard it all before.
I want you to stop, friend, and just take stock in light of eternity.
These things are in relation to eternity, heaven to gain and hell to shun.
These things, friend, are real and vital.
In fact, friend, they become very real to a person who gets a grasp of how to

(05:56):
stand before the living God and gets a thought about how they are in their sins.
And when they get a look at where they'll be, the consequences of their sin,
and where they'll be for all eternity.
I couldn't help but think, and this I'll make very little reference to it again,
but I couldn't help but think when I stood in Normandy some weeks ago,

(06:21):
not just about the heroism of young men and all the rest and the great battles,
but I couldn't help but think about the people.
And it is an interesting fact, the people in that part of France and in Normandy
especially, their appreciation for those who did come.

(06:41):
Right until this present day, it's very much in the face of people and the children
attending for to see these things and to listen to the stories and then just
to listen to some of the local people and what they have to say about their
appreciation for those who came.
And friend, I want you to stop just for a moment and think. I was reading through

(07:06):
just in Mark's gospel, and we've been enjoying it at home this last while.
And one of the great things in Mark's gospel is just getting a.
A moment or two to listen to what people have to say who met the Saviour.
And here we've started and we have read of someone, a man who was let down through the roof.

(07:31):
A man who was absolutely hopeless and helpless in his condition,
unable to do anything for himself.
And then we read that his friends had an interest in him to bring him to the
Saviour. Maybe you're here this evening, friend, and maybe you're not all that
interested in being here.
But I want to tell you what an opportunity it is for you in life to learn of God's way of salvation.

(07:59):
To hear concerning God's Son, to learn something of your need as a sinner,
and to find out, friend, how you can be right with the living God and have your sins forgiven.
To know, I always think it's a
wonderful statement, to know peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

(08:19):
And here was a man, maybe he never thought of it, but his friends gathered him
up and they brought him to meet the Savior.
And friend, I want to think, maybe you're sitting here in the meeting this afternoon
and somebody has brought you along and you've come up,
come in this evening very kindly and very reverently just to listen to the preaching of the gospel.

(08:45):
Friend, think about your soul for a moment and an opportunity to get to know
the Lord Jesus Christ as your own personal Saviour. There's none other can meet your need.
There's none other can obtain for you the forgiveness of sins.
There's none other, friend, who is able.
But salvation is found only and alone in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

(09:10):
And friend, we commend unto you another time our Saviour and tell you about him.
And friend, we would long that you would get to know him. Maybe you know those
who do know him. Maybe you know friends.
And really, that's where we come to in chapter five. I know we're rushing through those.
But in chapter five, we read of a man, and a man who was mad,

(09:34):
an outsider, a man who nobody wanted anything to do with.
People had put him out, and they didn't want his company at all.
The man who dwelt in the tombs.
And here was a day, and you know, I thought it very pertinent,
just a day that the Lord Jesus Christ, he came into his vicinity,
he came to his area, came right to where he was.

(09:57):
That indeed is the message of the gospel, of one who has come right to where
poor sinners are, coming into our world,
leaving the glories of heaven and stepping into this scene of time,
coming with a purpose to provide salvation for friends, for the rich,

(10:18):
or for the famous, no friend,
to come to provide salvation for poor sinners,
that we all might be delivered from going down to eternal ruin.
Delivered from the consequences and penalty of sin.
And here was a man, and the scriptures tell us about him being chained and held.

(10:38):
That's just a picture of sin.
Just a man who's gripped by sin, Unable to free himself Unable to obtain his
own liberty And bound by the shackles of sin But what a day The day that he met the Saviour Friend,
look around about And speak to friends who are here this afternoon Those who

(11:00):
have got to know the Lord Jesus Christ And ask him about him This is not You know,
I was thinking about it this morning Before we went out to remember the Lord Lord,
this is not just some religious function, friend.
We're not here to pass an hour on a Lord's day.
We're not here for a bit of entertainment or a bit of religiosity.

(11:23):
We're here, friend, to tell you of life that is found in a person.
Of salvation that is found, a salvation, friend, that is obtained.
It's life, eternal life. And here was a day in life that this dear man awakened
the day that he met the Saviour.

(11:44):
Friend, what a day that this was.
And we read down concerning the dear man.
We read how just at the end of the story we find him clothed and in his right
mind. You know, salvation brings a change.
Salvation, friend, is a mighty work in the soul of a man and brings a change
in a poor sinner, lifts him out of the dunghill and sets him upon his feet and establishes his going.

(12:12):
Gives to him life, eternal life, fits him, friend, for the years of time,
fits him for the great eternity and heaven and home.
And here was a day that the man met the Savior, a mighty change.
We could run down through the change that this man had, a change in standing,
a change in clothing, and a change in friends, and a change in his home,

(12:36):
and his interests and his associations.
You know, friend, the greatest of all changes was his link to a person.
He didn't want him to leave. Fear was it. The Savior was about to leave and go back across the sea.
You know, the Savior, friend, we speak about one who died.
He completed the work that he came to do. He suffered upon the cross.

(13:00):
He's risen triumphant from the dead. He's seated at the right hand of God.
We're not here to speak about one, a body in a tomb, One to be revered and one to be remembered.
And his body is still in a tomb.
And one that people maybe have pilgrimages to go and see where he once lived. No, friend.

(13:20):
We're here to speak about a living saviour. One who has risen triumphant from the dead.
And he's able to save. And he's promised a return.
And here was a man. And again, just for our little picture.
Here was a man and the saviour was leaving. He was going back across the water,
and the Savior told him, Go and tell the great things that have been done for thee.

(13:46):
Friend, I want to tell you this evening, we're here to tell you.
We're not here to tell you something with...
To say it correctly, something we've just read out of a book that is absolutely no meaning to us.
People like to get the books and read maybe how to do this and how to do that
and how to do the other thing.

(14:06):
And they know it all and they've got it all in their head.
And friend, this is something that we're here to tell you about that has touched our own souls.
Poor sinners who should have been in hell. Poor sinners who were trampling the way, going down to hell,
running with the crowd and running in our sins and running, friend,

(14:27):
on the way, going down to eternal ruin until we were arrested in our sins and
caused to stop and think about eternity and caused to turn in repentance and
trust Christ as Saviour.
And we're here to tell you, friend, about what...
This is our Savior. This is our friend. This is the one friend whom we've come

(14:48):
to love, to know and to love.
We appreciate him. We appreciate all he has done.
For friend, before we stop this evening, we have to tell you about the cost.
Not just the change and not just the condition of the people and the consequences of their sin.
But I want to tell you again this evening the cost of the Savior's coming, here was one.

(15:12):
And it is a lovely story to trace the life of the Lord Jesus and to get a look
at him, to look at his compassion for those in need.
And that's I was enjoying it through Mark's gospel. It gives us a lot about
the compassion of the Savior,
moving with compassion to this man that nobody liked or nobody wanted,
moving with compassion Compassion to a man who his friends brought,

(15:36):
a man who was hopeless and helpless.
Moving with an interest to a dear woman who had come with a disease that nobody
could cure and the Saviour is able to meet her need.
And a young girl, nobody really cared about her.
The people, the Pharisees were using her as an excuse to blame the Lord and
the Saviour is able to meet her need.

(15:58):
And we can read and read and read of the people, the compassion of the Savior.
We're here to tell you, friend of one, with compassion for those who are down
and out and those who are in their sins and those who know not Christ as Savior.
And we're here to tell you about one friend who gave his life a ransom for many.

(16:20):
Friend, that's the cost.
There was one who went out to Calvary's Cross. You know, he spoke in Mark's Gospel.
And we were thinking about it this morning.
One, and he could look out ahead, and he could speak of how he would be taken of men.
Men would spit upon him, and smite him, and falsely accuse him,

(16:42):
and take him out and kill him.
And the Saviour could speak about all those things. And he went out.
And he allowed men to take him. But friend, the Saviour would clarify it all
and he would say to give us life, a ransom for many.
That's why he has come. And that's why he has been.
One who went out to Calvary's cross to bear our sins in his own body upon the

(17:08):
tree, lifted up upon the cruel tree.
And how often we stand back and wonder at all that the Saviour suffered for
his sins. I think that has to be clarified.
This is the sinless, spotless Son of God the judge of the day could acknowledge.

(17:29):
I find no fault in this man.
Heaven could be opened, and the God of heaven would proclaim,
This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
And this is the one friend who would go out to Calvary's cross to give his life
a ransom for many, suffering in the stead of the guilty, paying the price that we could never pay.

(17:55):
Completing the work that he came to do and crying with triumph it is finished.
Friend, what a story it is. We would love to tell it with greater gusto,
but to tell you, friend, of the love of the Saviour and the price that he would
pay and the work that he has completed and the triumph of a risen Saviour and one who is seated.

(18:19):
At the right hand of God, friend, this evening, is it any wonder that this dear
man, he wanted to spend time with the Saviour.
Is it any wonder that he went away into his own country to proclaim the delights
of a Saviour, of one who had met him on that day, one who had met his need,

(18:40):
one who had come into his country.
One who had changed his life and changed his course and changed his destiny.
Friend, I want to tell you this evening, salvation brings a change.
And if there's a soul in the meeting this evening with an interest in your soul
and where you'll be for the great eternity, get a grip of it, friend.

(19:01):
Time is short. That's something our brethren were speaking about in the prayer meeting already.
Time is short. The opportunity to obtain God's salvation is flying from you.
And yet the wonder of it all is that a Savior can still be proclaimed.
There's one you can get to today, friend.

(19:22):
You know, we could have thought about something about the consequences of refusing the Savior.
You know, every one of these people had the opportunity to accept or refuse Him.
Here was one who had come came right
to where they were right up to our little story
Bartimaeus and Bartimaeus you'll know

(19:42):
the blind man he hears the saviour coming
and he cries out and he confesses his need he wants help friend is there a soul
in the meeting this evening and you feel the need of having your sins forgiven
that you realise something of the consequences of your sin and where it's going to bring you to.

(20:04):
Friend, I want to tell you again, there's one who can meet your need and there's
one who can save your soul and deliver you from going down to hell and fit you
to dwell forever in heaven.
He's the one who has come. He's the one who has given his life a ransom for many.
Or as it was for me, the day I got saved, I found out that he who has owned

(20:28):
self were my sin. That's what I found.
Bear my sin in his own body upon the tree.
Friend, this evening we commend unto you our Saviour.
We would long that you would turn from your sins. Trust him, friend.
He's worthy of your trust, and he's able to save you and to fit you to dwell forever in heaven.

(20:52):
Shall we bow and speak to the Lord? Our Father, once again we commend thy word
to thee as we look to thee for thy blessing upon thy word and as we pray for
the salvation of poor sinners.
What a joy it is to tell of a Saviour, one in whom we have every confidence
in, one who is able to save unto the uttermost all who come unto thee through him.

(21:17):
So we look to thee for thy blessing upon thy word and pray for any who are here
this evening in their sins that they might flee to him and trust them with their
soul and know the reality and joy of sins forgiven.
We look to thee now for thy blessing and preserving care upon all here as we

(21:38):
ask it still in the Lord Jesus' precious name. Amen.
