Are you feeling like a martyr in your own home?
Do you find yourself resenting your spouse for taking it easy on the couch while
you're scrambling to get dinner made, keep the kids from killing each other,
and make sure that the final load of laundry of the day makes it into the dryer?
(02:41):
I want you to take a few minutes today to stop and consider what you are doing
to refill fill your cup so that you can continue pouring into your family with
the love and grace I know that you desire.
We all find ourselves suddenly lashing out, feeling angry or bitter,
(03:03):
or just plain sick and tired of doing the same things over and over again without
any real recognition or appreciation.
What I have found over the years in my motherhood is that anytime I'm starting
to feel resentful, unappreciated, or just plain burnt out on giving my all,
(03:26):
it usually means that I haven't been paying attention to my own needs at all.
I want to encourage you to reframe your perspective on taking care of yourself.
Yes, as moms by design, we sacrifice so much for our family,
(03:47):
as we should, but there is a point where we need to stop and consider what it's
costing our family and ourselves when we completely disregard taking care of ourselves.
We're all familiar with the put on your oxygen mask first before anyone else,
(04:09):
instructions on the airplane, and we know why it makes sense, right?
It's obvious that we can't help our loved ones if we're dying, right?
But in life, we still struggle to figure that concept out, especially in parenting.
There is a part of us that has to come first.
(04:32):
Before we can begin to give love, support, and guidance to those that we cherish.
And that part of us is the place of our inner being, our soul and spirit.
That is what drives everything else we do.
And when we neglect it, ignore it, or just plain abuse it, not only are we suffering,
(04:54):
but those closest to us end up suffering too.
So how do we as moms with our busy schedules, our unpredictable demanding toddlers or teenagers,
and every other responsibility, find a way to continually refill our cups?
Perhaps most likely you already
(05:17):
know as soon as I started talking about this
at least one way that you could be filling and refreshing yourself and you just
haven't been prioritizing it we have all been there but I want to encourage
you to also consider three additional things that will allow you to be more of yourself,
(05:39):
the version of you that can feel
good about yourself when you go to bed at night and reflect on your day.
Yes, I too lay in bed kicking myself for the shoulda coulda wouldas in my mothering.
The first and probably most obvious is your spiritual well-being.
(05:59):
This, of course, is going to look completely different for every person,
but the most simple way you can reconnect your spirit is simply by choosing
to observe what God has created by getting out in the beauty of it.
I know as a mom who stays at home and works at home and homeschools,
(06:22):
all those things, I have days where I
never leave my house like I know that
seems bizarre but when you do all
of the things at home it's so easy to get caught up
in you know your structure and routines of
all things you're doing at home and there have been times
I'm like oh my goodness I have not been
(06:43):
outside in like two days so this
is your reminder to get out of your house not just to get in your your car and
drive to another building to get out in the creation that God gave us to appreciate
and to really see his glory.
(07:04):
I personally find that my most filling and deeply connected moments with God
are when I'm just simply being still and observing his creation.
Even when I am just sitting out on my front porch, which is why I prioritize
getting out there because I'm home so much.
(07:25):
Even when I'm out there, just stopping to listen to the birds and watching them
go about their business and finding their food, it brings me such an appreciation for God's provision.
There's another way that you can reconnect with God and your spiritual well-being,
and that is to to stop thinking of your time in the word as something to get
(07:50):
done or that you have to do a certain way or for a certain amount of time.
Rather, you want to just find ways to take it in that refresh you and don't stress you.
That could be something like a very simple journal or daily devotional that
is very short and powerful that allows you to connect without being overwhelmed.
(08:13):
I personally have been loving the Bible journal that I have mentioned before.
It's called the soap method and you
literally are just taking one verse or
small passage and reading through
it observing it meditating on it and journaling about it and praying and it's
(08:36):
so simple and it there's like zero pressure involved with it I don't feel like
I have to like brace myself when I sit down with it it's just so simple but it has really changed
how I connect with God through
the scriptures and I really love it and it's
something that I have been incorporating
(08:59):
more when I am super busy and I feel like
doing my deep dive studying just isn't on
the table at the moment so that's a way that you can just break the expectations
of what it has to look like and just find a way that you just love to do and
then And if you're someone who isn't really into reading or journaling and writing,
(09:22):
you know, maybe you're more of an audio learner,
find some great audio books or Bible studies or even just listening to the Bible on the app.
And you can pop those things in while you're doing mindless tasks like reading.
Doing the dishes, putting clothes away. You know, there's a lot of things that
(09:43):
we do throughout the day that we really don't need.
We don't need to focus on anything. We just do them.
So these are great opportunities to just take those quick five,
10 minutes, maybe a little longer, and listen to something that blesses you.
The second area you may be neglecting and haven't been giving attention to is
(10:05):
your need for connection.
I know as a young mom, I would bury myself in the demands of my babies,
housework, all the things, and then completely neglect reaching out to my friends and family.
And I think it's such a easy trap to fall into because we're just overwhelmed
(10:28):
and we tend to isolate when we're overwhelmed, right?
But that's the opposite of what we need. There is so much power in healthy human
connections and when we stop connecting, we end up suffering in a lot of different ways.
So if you're feeling like you're in a place of disconnection, isolation,
(10:48):
or you're just so busy and overwhelmed with life that you just don't feel like
you can prioritize those things,
please consider finding a way to to reach out to others in your community,
to ask for help, or even give your help.
There is lots of benefits from giving of your time and service.
(11:12):
And of course, that's not why we want to do it, but it really is a healing thing to do.
So there is amazing healing that can only take place in the context of healthy
connections and relationships.
So do not neglect it.
Thirdly, your soul needs to be fueled. How many of us moms have completely stopped
(11:35):
doing the things we used to love?
I know I did. And of course, there are seasons in motherhood where it's necessary
to take a break from certain activities or pursuits.
But make sure that but you're continuing to feed your soul by taking joy in purposeful pursuits.
We were made by God to create and pursue life with passion. We were made in his image.
(12:02):
And who is the ultimate creator, right?
Lately, I've been going out on hikes with my husband.
And I just, every time I'm out in nature, Sure.
I'm really blown away by how creative God is. You really start to look at all
of the things he's made from the rocks to the plants to the animals to all the
(12:30):
different landforms and the weather, like everything.
It's all so different and unique.
God is so incredibly creative.
And we were made in that image. And that's something he put inside of us.
And I really don't think that he put that in us for us to just suppress it and hide it.
I really think that that's part of us living in his design.
(12:54):
So you want to make sure that if you've been given the desire to, a godly desire,
to pour into your family with all that you have, to be a homemaker and do it
in a way that brings the most joy to you and your family, then I think you should.
If you've been given a godly desire to create a business that serves people
(13:16):
in a capacity that you're gifted in and it brings you and your clients joy,
then you should do it. You get my point.
I think so often we have been conditioned to either think that as women and mothers,
our value is only found in what
society or our family or even religious communities think as valuable,
(13:41):
or we get just caught up in comparing ourselves to those around us and like
what we're perceiving as valuable.
And we have to reframe our mindset to find our value in what God has given us
and made us to do and embrace it with every part of our being.
(14:03):
And that takes work. It means that we take time to reassess where we are finding
our value, what belief systems are feeding that narrative.
And that can take some time and a lot of introspection.
But once you get back to a place of confidence in where your value lies,
(14:24):
and you know your belief system isn't being run by outside influences,
you'll actually be able to go after those things that bring you joy with purpose
and without guilt and insecurity.
So I want to invite you to consider
starting this process of filling your cup by joining our morning routine challenge
(14:46):
going on right now through the month of September and having a morning routine
that is crafted for the purpose of filling and refreshing your mind, body,
and spirit is really going to be the best way that you can start keeping up
with the demands of life as a mom, as a wife,
(15:07):
all the different roles that you fill without completely losing who God made you to be.
