Steve Treseler (00:02):
Well, welcome to
The Infinite Improvisation Podcast:
adventures and music and creativity.
And I'm Steve Treselerreporting from Seattle.
And I am joined by my co-host Lauren Best.
All right, Lauren, we're doing it.
Lauren Best (00:12):
Why would we do this?
Steve Treseler (00:14):
What are we doing?
What is improvisation?
Lauren Best (00:17):
Improv is just making
things up, which is kind of true.
Steve Treseler (00:21):
Is it a
practice, a philosophy, a game.
Is it winging it?
Or is it noodling?
Is it making up random things?
Is it some magical gift?
Lauren Best (00:29):
There's always some
structure within that and layers
of structure within that, butyet we're still making things up.
Steve Treseler (00:36):
Not just putting
people on the spot, playing solos,
but making it a community experience
Lauren Best (00:42):
If I'm outside and
I hear the sound of a bird and I
whistled back, is that improvisation?
Or am I just playing?
And then if I keep improvising with thebird, are we now improvising together?
If I later on whistle somemore, am I improvising then?
Am I doing what a bird has taught me?
Have I learned bird by rote?
Steve Treseler (01:02):
As a performing
musician, improvisation in my world,
it's instant composition, right?
That we're composing somethingand performing it simultaneously.
Zoom out.
There's so much improvisation that happensin arts that's not improvised performance.
It could be that moment ofinspiration or the aha moment.
Something pops up and it becomesthe seed or the inspiration for a
larger composition or artistic work.
(01:24):
And then if we zoom out evenfurther just to improvisation,
and how we navigate life.
Lauren Best (01:29):
I think the process of
trying to get there can teach us a lot.
And I think that process can be amodel for other kinds of learning and
other kinds of personal developmentand personal transformation.
Steve Treseler (01:41):
The creative decisions are
coming down from composers and conductors,
and that's a great fit for some people, but other people don't necessarily feel
like they're fully expressed or thatthey're looking for something else.
Lauren Best (01:51):
I have a background as
an interdisciplinary and community
engaged artist, and I'm interestedin collaboration and creativity in
different ways to facilitate musicalexperiences and catalyze learning.
Steve Treseler (02:05):
And one thing
that's interesting about our story.
I mean, Lauren and I, we justmet maybe two months ago and
now we're starting a podcast.
So like why, why was that a good idea?
A lot of the ideas or philosophywe're talking about totally on
the same page, but our experienceswere completely different
Lauren Best (02:18):
And we thought, hey,
maybe other people would also be
excited to hear these conversationsand explore some of these ideas.
Steve Treseler (02:25):
We're really committed to
this conversation and people around it.
Lauren Best (02:29):
Let's hope it's actually just
like an everyday kind of extraordinary.
Steve Treseler (02:33):
