(00:10):
Welcome to the Just Buy My Vote podcast.
I am Joseph Simmons,
the host and also author of the new book,
Just Buy My Vote,
African American voting rights and the Chicago Condition.
Well,
this first season of the Just Buy My Vote podcast began with the trailer we launched on the fourth of July,
which continues to make me smile.

(00:31):
This has been a lot of fun and really a blast for me.
And if you're listening,
I hope you too enjoyed each of the episodes as much as I did.
I'm grateful to each of the guests and it's because of who they are and the sources and stories they told that made each episode interesting and informative.

(00:57):
In this season,
we heard about the historical figures,
W.E.B. DuBois from Barrington, Massachusetts.
and also Jean Baptiste
Du Sable,
the founder of the city of Chicago.
So in this last episode of the year,
I thought I would mention the man considered by many to be the father of African American history.

(01:23):
Carter G Woodson.
This gives me an opportunity to read from a portion of my book,
Carter G Woodson.
1875 to 1950 was born in New Canton,
Virginia and is considered by some as the quote unquote father of Negro history.

(01:48):
He was the first and only black American born of former slaves to earn a Phd.
He completed his Phd in history at Harvard University in 1912 and he was the second African American after W.E.B. DuBois to earn a doctorate.
Woodson attended the University of Chicago and received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts.

(02:13):
In 1908,
Woodson began his career as a publishing scholar in the field of African American history in 1915.
With the publication entitled The Education of the Negro
Prior to 1861. Woodson also began celebration of Negro History Week in Washington DC in 1926 to increase awareness of and interest in Black history among both blacks and whites.

(02:48):
And this served as the forerunner to February being recognized as Black History Month.
He chose the second week of February to commemorate the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Carter G.
Woodson had a huge influence on the research and writing in African American history.

(03:13):
He wrote numerous articles,
monographs and books on African Americans,
including the history of the Negro Church,
the Miseducation of the Negro, and the Negro in our history,
which reached its 11th edition in 1966 after it had sold more than 90,000 copies.

(03:36):
Woodson believed that education and increasing social and professional contacts among blacks and whites could reduce racism and he promoted the organized study of African American history,
partly for that purpose.
Woodson is also known for his worldview and novel belief that education properly taught could transform society,

(04:03):
improve race relations,
benefit the lower classes and be useful to the development of not just black people but all people.
By the way,
that is from chapter two of my book.
Well,
no doubt Woodson was pointing us in the right direction by emphasizing education as a tool for enriching our democracy.

(04:30):
Thank you for listening.
I hope you enjoy your holidays and I'm sure we all look forward to voting in 2024.
Well,
well,
we hope you enjoyed that episode of the Just Buy My Vote podcast.
We're looking forward to the next episodes.
