I en namnlös stad söker en fattig student efter ett billigt boende. Efter mycket letande finner han till slut en okänd gata, Rue d’Auseil, där en lam hyresvärd erbjuder husrum i ett nästintill öde hus. En sen kväll hör han dock märklig musik från våningen ovanför. Det visar sig att vindsrummet bebos av en tysk musiker, som spenderar nätterna med att spela på ett sätt som trollbinder studenten och han bestämmer sig således för att besöka den skygga Erik Zann.
