Journalen som visar sig tillhöra en Dr Thomas Slauenwhite innehåller ett störande berättelse. Då han anser sig sig vanhedrad av ryktesspridning från en tidigare vän och kollega, Dr Henry Moore, beslutar sig Slauenwhite att mörda Moore som hämnd. Detta blir början på utvecklandet av en komplicerad mordplan, utförd med förklädda hybrid flugor, framavlade från en tsetse variant som hittats bland cyklopiska ruiner i ett träsk djupt inne i Uganda. Flugorna är bärare av en dödlig sjukdom och bland urinvånarna finns vidskepelsen att en man som dör av ett sådant flugbett, för över sina minnen till flugan i dödsögonblicket.
Efter stora mödor med att gömma dess ursprung, lyckas Slauenwhite sända flugorna till Moore och får via omvägar reda på att han fiende avlider månader efter bettet. Men det visar sig att han inte varit så diskret som han trott och under oron att bli avslöjad, lämnar han Mombasa och antar en identitet i sydafrika.
Men journalen är inte avslutad, då något händer, som får Slauenwhite att börja skriva igen…
