When it comes to getting organized, you might think that you need all the time,
all the money, the perfect crystal clear organizing baskets and bins from the container store.
You might think you need all the Lazy Susans, all the beautiful wicker baskets.
And did I say time? Yeah, I did, because we think we need all the time in the world too.

(00:25):
Lastly, you might think that in order to get organized, you need a house that's not full of kids.
I was so guilty of thinking all of these things too.
But I have since learned that there are other things that are way more important
when it comes to beginning this organizational journey.

(00:45):
And I wanted to share those with you today because they are extremely important
and it's been a while since I've touched on it. So let's dive right in.
Hey there, friend. Mom to mom, I'm wondering a few things.
Do you feel like you're drowning in clutter and messes? Are you struggling to

(01:07):
find the time to work on your part-time job or your side hustle from home because
of all the chaos around you?
Do you wish that you had a more organized home, but you don't know where to start?
And even if you did, you're wondering, how am I even going to stay consistent at this?
Well, friend, I am so excited to meet you where you're at.
I'm Amy. I'm a busy work from home mom of four young kids. And like you,

(01:30):
I used to feel stressed by the mess.
I wish I could feel at peace in my own home. And I wanted a way to manage my
house while finding the time to work.
But I kept telling myself I don't have the time to do it all and that it was
pointless to even try until I found simple systems to keep my house work and life more organized.

(01:55):
Even with little kids in this podcast, you will find tips for creating simple
home organization systems as a work from home mom.
So you will finally feel able to be consistent and feel at peace in your own home.
So brew some coffee, pack up the kids

(02:16):
for a car nap and let's go my friend because it is your time to learn.
Music.
So tonight, I was reminded of how important it is to have the right tools in

(02:40):
our toolboxes when it comes to anything that we're trying to do better in life.
So this episode is really just kind of off the fly, off the cuff,
based off of what I experienced just a few hours ago.
So this evening, I had a situation come up with one of my kiddos.
She was exhausted, so we had had blankets hung up in their windows to try and

(03:04):
block some of the extra sunlight over the summer so that they would sleep better.
We don't have curtains and stuff hung up yet, so we used blankets. We improvised.
I took down the blanket in my one oldest daughter's room so that I could take
a picture of her room is what I was trying to say, because I was trying to kind
of do some brainstorming, some design brainstorming, and I wanted to take the really.

(03:28):
Eyesore ugly red plaid blanket down
from out of her window so I did that however I forgot
to put it back up because life happened and so then when it came to bedtime
I was putting the kiddos to bed and of course my hubby's gone because it's harvest
time so he's not here and when I'm putting them to bed on on my own they always

(03:49):
something always happens right they always have all the
feelings and all the things, which is fine.
So anyways, yeah, long story short, she was quite frustrated that the blanket
was still up in her room and that the blanket was down in her sister's room
because they really didn't like having these blankets in the window.
And so a few years ago, my response to this situation of being stressed out

(04:14):
because I was trying to put four kids to bed by myself, of being tired.
Being overwhelmed, my response to all of those feelings I was having would have
been to get really frustrated, to lose my patience, to yell.
I used to really, really struggle with yelling.
However, I've just been on this big journey lately in my parenting over the
past few years of utilizing better tools and mechanisms and having a better parenting toolbox.

(04:40):
So then, because my parenting toolbox has expanded so much over the years,
and because I now have the proper parenting tools in this toolbox that I can
pull from when things are going badly and when things are hard and when I'm struggling,
I am starting to notice I can react to situations better and I can fix situations better.

(05:02):
I can get through things faster.
I can help my kids through these situations better.
You know what I'm trying to say. When we have the right tools in our
toolboxes we can be better right and I
think as moms we all kind of have these areas that we
want to be better in we all have these little
things that we are trying to improve on and I'm

(05:24):
not like trying to throw mom guilt down our throats not at all what this is
about this is just simply about sometimes we take certain certain things upon
ourselves to improve right and parenting Parenting was one of those things I
have been on a journey of constantly trying to improve over the last couple years.
So anyways, I was able to handle this situation a lot better than I would have a few years ago.

(05:47):
And just going to say, I was quite thankful for tonight, for how it went,
for how I was able to handle it.
So then this really got me thinking about when there are other things in our
life that we're struggling with, when we're not sure how to even get started.
There's something that's bothering us that we want
to fix and we don't know how to get started and it

(06:09):
can feel really overwhelming because our toolbox for that
particular skill set is empty or lacking or has the wrong tools in it we could
be trying to fix a problem with the wrong tools in our toolboxes and so I thought
actually we can apply this to getting organized so bear with me

(06:32):
here love the analogy that i'm
throwing at you and forgive my voice i am sick again my
deepest apologies about that so what i
thought is if we have the right tools in
our toolboxes when it comes to this
goal we have of getting more organized having a
more peaceful home having a tidier home getting rid of the clutter having a

(06:55):
better personal life schedule managing our routines and habits and goals and
all these things better when it when it comes to all these things that falls
into this big messy bucket of let's get more organized as a busy mom.
I believe that there are a couple tools that should really, really,
really be in our toolboxes that if they aren't in there already,

(07:19):
we need to put them in there so that we can get ourselves on the right track
and start to get to the solution phase of using this toolbox a lot faster.
So that is why today, in a very roundabout way,
I wanted to share with you the two
tools tools I believe

(07:41):
you must have in your toolbox
when it comes to becoming a
more organized mom and that is what I wanted to share with you today and as
I said in the introduction you might think that it's some of those things that
it's not and so if you are trying to fill your toolbox up with the wrong things
because you think that that's what you need in order to tackle this job you could be mistaken.

(08:06):
So I just wanted to break it down. Let's get back to the basics and talk about
the two most important things I think we need when I think about it when it
comes to getting organized. So let's talk about that today.
Before we get started, I do have to remind you of a couple awesome things,
especially if you're new around here and you haven't been listening to the podcast for long.
You might not know how you can connect with me more or work with me and get help.

(08:31):
I would love to work with you on a one-on-one basis through my coaching program.
You can sit down with me for an hour and we can talk about how to get started
tackling some of these important systems that are so crucial in order for starting
to become a more organized mom and getting your house under control.
So right now I am working with people in helping them start to get a handle

(08:56):
on their daily and weekly cleaning routines.
So I would love to work with you and to help you do that.
If that is something that interests you and this is a system that you feel like
you could use some improvement on, then I would love to help you with that.
You can go to plantomom.com slash coaching in order to get more information about that.

(09:18):
So what are the most important things we need in our toolboxes in order to get organized?
Like I said in the introduction, you might think that you need a ton of time.
You might think you need a ton of money. You might think you need all of the
beautiful bins and baskets and containers and all of those gorgeous things you
see on Instagram and Facebook all the time, all the Pinterest perfect things.

(09:43):
You might think you need access to all those things in
order to get organized or you might be
like I was a few years ago and think that the only way I
was ever going to see my floors again without them
being a mess or the only way I was going to see cupboards that weren't rifled
through was if I didn't have kids if they were out of the house and growing

(10:06):
but friends those those are not the problems those are not the things that we
need to be putting in our toolbox first.
The two things that we need to have in our toolbox are these two things.
Number one, the right mindset. I talk about it all the time of how important
it is to practice progress over perfection, consistency over perfection.

(10:31):
And this ties into our mindset as well.
It is so important that when we are starting this journey of getting more organized,
if if this is something that's important to us, that we have the right mindset.
I don't know if you've ever tried to tackle anything else hard in your life
without having the right mindset
first, but you will see very quickly that it's not going to work, is it?

(10:54):
If you are starting a new diet or something and you really don't want to be
on that diet and your mindset is telling you this sucks,
it's going to be a hundred times harder to follow through with that thing and
to actually get results from it and the same goes for getting organized.
If you keep telling yourself that I can't get organized because I don't have

(11:17):
time, because my kids are slobs, because I don't have all the pretty bins and
baskets, because my house is old,
because I don't have closets, if you keep telling yourself these negative beliefs
in your mindset it is going to make it a hundred times harder to see any progress at all.
So that is why that is the first thing I bring up and I I think the most important

(11:39):
thing completely is the right mindset.
And this was the nail that hit me on the head when I first started this journey
of becoming a more organized mom, was I had to get my mindset right.
If you have not been here for very long, you probably haven't heard some of
my earlier episodes, but I dove really deep into how getting my mindset right

(12:05):
was the crucial pivoting point that turned everything around for me.
I decided that I was going to start making things easier for myself by creating
systems in my daily life.
I decided that I was going to stop feeling so frustrated by every little mess.
I decided that i was going to be more

(12:28):
intentional and purposeful and consistent with what
i was doing and it was because i decided to do all
those things that was the pivotal turning moment so
that is why the very first tool we need in our toolbox when we want to get organized
is the right mindset if you don't bring the right mindset to the table the changes
are not going to happen you can have a million dollars to go spend at the container

(12:51):
store and organize your whole entire house from top to bottom with all those
pretty bins and baskets.
But guess what? If your mindset is not in the right place to maintain all that
organization, it doesn't matter
how expensive those bins were or how much money you had to spend on it.
It's not going to help anyways, because you're not going to be able to maintain
it or to have the right mindset to maintain it or to be able to calm the chaos

(13:16):
and the clutter in your own mind first.
So I hope that that makes sense, and I hope that it's hitting home for you because it is so important.
And then the second thing we need in our toolbox when we want to be a more organized mom is systems.
Without a system, how are you going to know how to maintain anything, okay?

(13:36):
When we say systems, we just mean a way of managing what we did in a way that
makes it easy for our brain to know what's going on and for other people in
the family to know what's going
on and just how to break down a task or a thing that we're trying to do,
how to break that down into repeatable steps that we can implement and then

(14:00):
implement on on a repeatable basis or to implement once and to have that kind
of functioning for us on autopilot.
So if we don't have the systems in place for organizing the certain aspects
of our life or our home or our kids and our family, then it is going to be like
we are starting from square one all the time.

(14:22):
You are going to always be back to square one thinking, how do I do this?
How do I to do that? What am I supposed to be doing today?
What are we having for dinner tonight? What am I supposed to be cleaning today?
You are going to overwhelm yourself and that feeds into the mindset.
You are going to overwhelm yourself with way more decisions and decision fatigue and.

(14:44):
Problems than you need to because you haven't taken the
time or the effort or had
the right mindset of let's let's create
a system for something that I need
to do every single day in order to make this easier for
me or how to create a system for maintaining
that space that I just organized and worked

(15:07):
so hard to organize so we need systems and we need the right mindset in order
to see success in this whole organizing toolbox that we're creating in order
to tackle this problem of feeling overwhelmed by our house suffocated by the clutter.
Frustrated that we never know what's what we're eating for

(15:30):
dinner every night sick and tired of nobody helping
us with chores or nobody picking up their own things if
we want to tackle those problems that we're
having we need to fill our toolbox with the right things and those two most
important things I think hands down in my mind are our mindset and systems and

(15:50):
then once we start diving into those things and we start working on let's fix
that mindset and let's start creating systems,
you can slowly and surely start to increase that consistency,
start seeing successes,
and start gaining traction.
And the beautiful thing about these things is that even if you fall off track,
if you have taken the time to get your mindset right, and to create a system,

(16:15):
even if you start to fall off track,
instead of falling all the way down the hill instead of falling all the way
off that cliff, you almost have like an ice pick that you are shooting into
the side of the rock to catch yourself before you fall all the way.
You are never going to be starting from square one again because you do have

(16:36):
something that you are falling back on that is going to pick you up and help
you to get started higher than you were before.
Throughout my many years of the meal
planning system that I use sometimes I get off track
I'm human just like you things get busy things
get out of control but because I have this system in my head of this is how

(16:59):
I meal plan and it's so simple and this is how we do it that even if I fall
off track then my brain instantly knows where to pick up again my brain instantly
knows where we left off or same with the cleaning routines that I talk about.
I have this system for how I manage my weekly cleaning.
And because it is so ingrained in my head already at this point,

(17:22):
because I've been doing it this way for so long, it is so easy for me to pick
up where I left off after I've had a crazy week and to get back on track.
And that is what I want for you as well.
So that's why I'm helping you
create cleaning systems in my
coaching program right now because I do believe that staying on

(17:43):
top of those cleaning tasks and having a way to reset your
house at the end of every day and at the end of every week is so important and
so crucial in making your physical space around you feel better so that you
are mentally able to think about the other organizing tasks that we need to be dealing with as well.

(18:06):
So personally, I think that there are a couple systems that are crucial.
There are three crucial systems I think that moms need to get on track in order to be organized.
And they are the three systems that I first implemented and that I think make all the difference.
And so one of those systems, give you a little sneak peek to a future episode,

(18:30):
one of those systems is cleaning systems.
If you do not have a good cleaning system, you are going to be fighting an uphill
battle every single day of trying to get your house, keep your house decently clean and tidy.
These simple, repeatable cleaning systems that we follow consistently that keep
our house consistently cleaner so that we aren't always playing catch up on

(18:54):
our cleaning tasks and having no time for anything else that we need to get
cleaned or organized or systemized in our house.
So cleaning systems is one of the very first things that I'm tackling with my coaching clients.
And if that is hitting home for you, if that's resonating for you,
and you're feeling like, yeah, when I think about it, every night I'm going

(19:16):
to bed, my house is still a disaster.
I don't have a good system for resetting my house every day.
I don't have a good system for resetting my house every week.
Like sometimes I clean my bathroom one week and then it's like a month later
before I get to it again or a couple weeks later before I get to it again and
then it's taking me longer to clean because it's so dirty.

(19:38):
If any of those things are resonating with you, then I absolutely would love to help you.
So again, you can go to plantomom.com slash coaching and get a coaching call
booked with me so that we can start to tackle one of these crucial systems that
are going to help you get more organized and have a better feeling home and life overall.

(20:02):
And yeah, because we need to deal with our mindset and we need to deal with systems.
Those are the first two things in our toolbox that we need. So I hope that you
enjoyed today's episode.
I apologize that it was a little bit bit rambly my head
cold is messing with my brain so
my apologies about that but I know you got the gist I know

(20:23):
you understand that there are certain things
we need to do in order to succeed at
this goal we have and the most important things as I outlined today are your
mindset and starting to create some systems to make this all easier on you okay
so I will be back again next week my my friends. I am so thankful for you being here.
