"Verdingung" je považován za jednu z nejtemnějších kapitol nedávné švýcarské historie. Až do 60. let 20. století odebíraly švýcarské úřady desítky tisíc dětí jejich rodičům, tzv. "závadovým rodinám" a prodávaly je, oficiálně za účelem bydlení a vzdělávání. Děti, ale ve skutečnosti neměly žádná práva, byly často umisťovány do zemědělství, kde byly využívány jako levná pracovní síla, ale obvykle také psychicky a fyzicky týrány a často sexuálně zneužívány.
