Do you notice that you tend to call your mom to ask for cooking or cleaning advice, but you call your dad to help you fix your car? Have you ever wondered why this is?

On this episode of On The House: Household Management Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra is joined by Michael Bittman, an Emeritus Professor in Sociology at the University of New England. They were the President of IATUR from 2005 to 2013 and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and have published on the sexual division of labor, intra-household bargaining, work-family balance, ICTs, children’s activities, population health and reliability and validity of time diaries.

Michael has just finished co-editing a training manual on how to use analysis of time data for the United Nations and is a part of a team of researchers investigating the changes in the social organization eating in the last quarter century.

Michael talks about how as women make more money, they do less housework (but only to a point), and why technology hasn’t decreased how long we spend cleaning. They also share tips on how to manage your time better.
