(04:22):
Now let's move into today's topic.
When starting a plant-based diettransition, I see many people
falling into a certain trap.
What is it?
It's the recipe trap.
They get caught up into the whirlwindof searching for, looking up, and
scouring the internet and onlinecommunities like Facebook groups for

(04:44):
plant-based meal ideas and recipes.
Yes, making plant-based meals is animportant part, but that's not all of it.
In fact, if that's all you're focusing on,it will be difficult for you to succeed
and truly thrive eating plant-based.
This was the experienceof one of my clients.

(05:05):
At the beginning of our workingrelationship, she shared this with me,
"I tried plant-based eating 3 yearsago but faded back to my standard
diet after approximately 8 months.
I was only focusing on learning tomake certain recipes, and over time
realized the time required to makecomplicated recipes was not sustainable."

(05:27):
It's clear then that having justrecipes isn't enough, and when my
client shared this with me, I knew why.
It's because the infrastructurehad not been set up properly to
support her desired new lifestyle.
Let me explain this witha house building analogy.
If you want a good solid secure homethat will stand for years and be able to

(05:51):
weather the elements well, you'll needto first set up a strong foundation,
solid walls and a good secure roof, before you can move on to do any
interior designing and decorating.
Just think of the story of the threelittle pigs and the houses they built.
So to me, good plant-based recipes areonly one piece of the success puzzle

(06:15):
when it comes to plant-based eating.
But other critical pieces need to be inplace in order for a plant-based diet
lifestyle to really stick and bringabout the health transformation desired.
This is why I focus on four keypillars in my PlantNourished Transition
Success Method, which I use to helpcoaching clients and students in my

(06:38):
Plant-Powered Life Transformation Course.
These essential elements areMindset Building, Foundation
Setting, Smart Recipe Integration, and Lifestyle Success Strategies.
And this is the reason why mycoaching clients are able to sustain a
plant-powered lifestyle years down theroad, even after we stop working together.

(06:59):
They have been set up well and giventhe right tools in their plant-based
diet toolbox to thrive for life.
So today, in this episode, I wantto help you build up a plant-powered
mindset, by sharing one key perspectiveshift you need to make when you
begin this new way of eating.

And it's this (07:19):
Start looking at the foods on your plate differently.
How?
Instead of seeing them as singlenutrient foods, see the foods you're
eating as full package combos.
If you can make this perspectiveshift, it'll be huge.
Let me explain why.

(07:41):
We have a tendency to oversimplifythings when it comes to food.
Maybe because the rest of life isso complicated, or because we're so
influenced by social media and whatwe see or hear in popular media.
So different foods sadly becomevilified and compartmentalized
into certain nutrient categories.

(08:02):
I'm sure you're familiar with this.
Just think of what you'veheard or have come to believe.
Things like meats are protein, or grainsare high carb, or fruits are sugar.
Thinking in these simplisticblack and white terms won't be
helpful though if you're trying toestablish a plant-powered lifestyle.
Because you'll be forever thinkingyou're going to lack nutrients like

(08:24):
protein if you eat only plants, since meats provide protein, and may
avoid certain food categories likegrains since they only provide carbs.
Now for certain foods, this singlecategory classification can be true, like
for refined oils which are truly a fatsource with little to no other nutrients.

(08:46):
But keeping this view for all foodsis too simplistic, especially when
you are moving to a plant-based diet.
It's simply not true.
Here's the truth.
Natural whole plant-based foodsare not single nutrient foods.
They're actually multi-nutrient foods.
Each fruit, vegetable, whole grain, orbean variety comes as a whole package

(09:11):
of nutrients to nourish our bodies.
So each plant-based foodprovides our bodies with protein,
carbohydrate, fiber, water, aswell as many vitamins and minerals.
That's why you can't categorize them asonly containing a single macronutrient,
like protein, carbohydrates, or fat.

(09:32):
Here's just one example, quinoa.
Quinoa is a whole grain, andunlike what many think, it
is not just made up of carbs.
In fact, one cooked cup of quinoaalready provides over 8 grams of
protein, 5 grams of fiber, 2.7 milligramsof iron, and 2 milligrams of zinc.

(09:54):
It is also a great source ofmicronutrients like magnesium, phosphorus,
potassium, selenium, choline, as wellas calcium, folate, and B vitamins.
So I hope you see that every timeyou eat a natural whole plant-based
food, you'll get a packaged dealof both macro and micronutrients,
along with many phytonutrientsand disease fighting compounds.

(10:19):
That's why these foods are themost nourishing for our bodies.
There's another way I want you tothink about this packaged deal concept.
Tell me if you've had this experience.
When you go to a fast-food restaurantand order a meal, don't they often
try to sell you a combo meal?
One with a soda, burger, and fries along with it?

(10:42):
It all comes together as acomplete package at the same time.
Well, though meats can be a good proteinsource, it's important to remember
that they also come packaged withundesirable components like saturated
fat, cholesterol, and zero fiber.
Fish and shellfish can also be aprotein source, but can come packaged

(11:04):
with toxic contaminants like mercury,PCBs, dioxins, and microplastics.
So evaluate the quality and kinds ofnutrients you want to get as a package
when you make your food choices.
So today we looked at the wrong mentalityto have when moving to plant-based eating.

(11:25):
It's to think of food simplistically,as only providing one major nutrient.
But thinking this way will onlyblacklist certain nutrient-rich foods,
like fruits, which is unfortunate.
It short changes them because it impliesthat they are inferior or contain less
nutrients than what is actually in them.

(11:46):
These clear-cut categories are man-made.
It's not how nature designed naturalwhole plant-based foods to be.
Instead, adopt a newperspective and viewpoint.
Choose to see whole plant-basedfoods the way they really are, as
wonderfully rich packages of macroand micronutrients designed to

(12:08):
nourish our bodies in the right way.
Thinking this way will help you worryless about lacking nutrients and
more able to enjoy these nourishingfoods that nature designed for us.
If you're serious about moving toa plant-based diet and making this
a lifelong journey, I hope youwill adopt this key mindset shift.

(12:29):
Changing our mindset is a bigpart of being successful in
a plant-powered lifestyle.
Here's an action step you can take.
Consider what kind of packageddeal or combo meal you want to
provide your body going forward.
Is it one that would nourishit or one that would harm it?
Then, this week, try to see the foodson your plate in this new light, and

(12:53):
be more conscious about the foodsyou choose to put on your plate.
I hope that this concept of seeingfoods as multi-nutrient package
deals will make it easier for youto choose the most healthful foods
to focus on and eat, especially ifyour goal is for the best health.
