Jesse Tutt (00:00):
Thanks everyone for joining us for the Rank and Prosper podcast.

(00:05):
The, this session we'regonna go through Backlinking.
If any of you have any questionsfeel free to send me a message on
the chat and we'll, get it answered.
First, off, we're gonna talk aboutall the different kinds of backlinks.
Talking about the importance ofbacklinks especially with the most
recent updates, backlinks are key.
So we've got a whole bunch ofdifferent kind of backlinks that

(00:26):
we're gonna walk through today.
The short answer is that oneof the top ranking factors in
almost all cases is back links.
there's different kinds.
We'll go through with regardto quantity versus quantity.
Different factors including relevanceauthority, traffic . Certainly one
of the, primary solutions that Idefinitely looked, to for, from a

(00:51):
backlinking perspective is guest posts.
Obviously getting a linkfrom another website.
Submitting content is a reallygreat strategy for backlinking.
Next up we've got broken link building.
And so we're looking through findingdifferent broken links and then
contacting the webmasters and askingthem for to, update their link.

(01:12):
And then of course, posting itupdating it to point to you.
Influencer outreach is anothergreat way of actually getting back
links on social media marketing.
Content re repurposing, whichis really looking at content,
updating it, making it better.
But and then either way we've got amonitoring and analyzing your back links.

(01:32):
We'll, briefly talk touch on, andthen common mistakes to avoid.
And then talking through the tools.
And then wrapping up I'massuming this will probably
take about maybe 25, 30 minutes.
And let's get started.
So I guess at a macro level, Back linksare simply a link to your website.

(01:53):
Why do you need back links?
We get back links so that Googlewill know the, type of content
that relates to our sites.
Secondly, understand that we'rean authority on the topic.
So that's the primary point of back linksthrough the anchor text and through the
back links Google and every browser reallyis able to actually ascertain that if

(02:19):
a, webmaster has created an article onsomething and the link that goes to, or
that the content on that is about dogs andthe anchor text is about best dog outfits.
And then the art the article islinked to a best dog outfits page.
Clearly.
Google understands the best dogoutfits anchor text is telling

(02:44):
Google what that page is about.
And then it goes to that page, and then all of a sudden you
can see that it's in niche.
The site's dedicated to dogsand it's linking to a site
that's dedicated to dog outfits.
And so they're in the similar niche.
And so behind the scenes the, bestway that I like to explain it is that
simply when you're creating links, the most ideal case is simply to have

(03:09):
links created from your competitors, that is the most ideal state.
So if you end up creating a hundredlinks from plumbers and they're all
linking to a plumber website, itwould be beneficial for two purposes.
One is that you've got, obviously, the niche, correct.
Secondly, you have the location ofbeing in the same kind of vicinity,

(03:29):
and so that clearly isn't possible.
Obviously there's noway that we could ask.
Our for a plumbing client thatall of its competitors link to it.
And so the second best is to find otherwebsites or actually in the same niche
that are in the same location if you'regoing for local SEO and linking to them.
That's a, broad leveldescription of backlinking.

(03:54):
I'm gonna quickly shift gearshere and let's keep on going
through a bit more concepts.
So from a backlinking perspectivewhen we open up Microsoft Word, and
I'm gonna just show you simply whata, true backlink actually looks like.
If we have an article on, plumbing andwe're talking about plumbing and all

(04:15):
of a sudden if you are interested inlearning more, About plumbing tools.
Check out plumbingtools.com.
So this is your, common kindof blank anchor text link.

(04:37):
So you've got a link.
You've got a the plumbing tools is clearlythere and more, more importantly, when
you move your mouse on top of it in, thesame manner as when you move your mouse
on top of a website, you can see thatthe link and the anchor text is the same.
So when I move my mouse on topof this U url, that the text
that comes above it is the same.

(04:58):
That's anchor text.
Now we're gonna, we're gonna change that.
We're gonna change the anchortext to plumbing tools.
Now, this would be beneficial if thethe, link that we're targeting or
the, webpage that we're targeting.

(05:18):
We're trying to, increase the rankingof plumbing tools, search raises.
If we were looking for check outthe maybe best plumbing tools.
And we had an article aboutthe best plumbing tools.
We might choose an anchor textlike that now be behind the scenes
from a anchor text perspective.

(05:41):
Anchor text is really important.
And so generally speaking, ironicallyjust for a, quick poll, how many
people, if you were going to ranka best plumbing tools, what would
be the best anchor text for that?
That that back link.
Would it be best plumbing tools, maybe.

(06:02):
How many people think it wouldbe . The, short answer is,
that it would not be best.
So generally speaking thathaving a an exact batch anchor
text is actually not ideal.
Almost all back links for reallylarge organizations that are actually
ranking don't have exact match.
And The anchor text ratiosof exact match to semantic.

(06:29):
So for a article, excuse me,that's linking, that's actually
targeting best plumbing tools.
He might have bestarticle on plumbing tools.
Or you might have less best Timin Canda or something like that.
So generally speaking, I deviate the,I include the the target search phrase,

(06:52):
but I do add a or remove or prefix orbasically generally speaking, it's a
prefix or a suffix for the anchor text.
But that's, generallyspeaking how I do it.
I don't recommend doing exactmatch because it, just every,
competitor does not do that.
So if we look at our example we wouldfind websites that are actually centered

(07:19):
on best plumbing tools in this example.
So we would've created a fullySEO optimized page on our website
that was re had a u r l of besthyphen plumbing hyphen tools.
The, H1 would have that, the firstsentence of the paragraph would have that.
Amended description wouldinclude some context on that.

(07:40):
The image would have ideally some text onit that says Best plumbing tools in it.
Maybe we've got a video, but thepoint is we've gotta fully, let's
just assume we have a fully optimizedpage called Best Plumbing Tools.
Next up we need to figure out where'sthe where are we gonna get some links?
And as I mentioned, we're gonnago through some, high level tools.

(08:00):
A lot of the different org organizationsout there have these level of tools.
If you don't considergetting one certainly.
The, most common ones aresemrush, ahrefs and number two.
Next up Moz is actually pretty darn good.
Majestic is also great.
Buzzsumo is interesting cuzit'll help you to actually find

(08:21):
influencers for your backlinks.
But we'll, get into that later.
Now the, locality is very important.
So we're gonna choose Canada inour case because we wanna rank
best claim tools for Canada.
Next up we're gonna look at all ofthese different sites and we can
see that right now the number onebest plumber tools is this page.

(08:45):
And then we're gonna look at the organickeywords for that for that exact url.
And as you can see, is this URLis actually ranking for all of
these different search traces.
Secondly, We can lookat the backlink history.
And so in this case, they'vegot 115 different back links.

(09:05):
And if we look at the the domainrating, which I generally speaking would
recommend and don't get me wrong, youcan get traffic from non-high domain
ratings, but the it's certainly the it'salways good to actually check it out.
So if I was looking at.
Ranking a site that competed withthis for best plumber tools, I would

(09:26):
start to look through these lists.
And what am I looking for?
Certainly domain rating is important.
Having a site that actually has trafficis another, and so you can see here
that there's a bit of diversity.
For example, I've got 60 domain rating, but I've got zero domain traffic.
What that means to me is but just lookingat this one really quickly, my guess

(09:50):
is, that it's probably not a great site.
And so we're gonna look at thisby my house seven, and they've got
reviews and it doesn't, it looksspammy to my, from my viewpoint.
Might not, might be wrong, but thethe, short interest that when we
look at all these different articles,Let's just see how span this one is,

(10:13):
because we're not getting any trafficfrom it, even though the domain
rating is up high as suspicious.
For those that don't know, thereis ways to to increase the domain
rating of your site without havingI like in a, in illegitimate ways.
And so this isn't alwaysthe best indicator, but I,
that's why I always look at.

(10:35):
Domain traffic.
And secondly, the the the, domain rating.
So the, short answer is I wouldprobably be looking at this one.
So we always take a look at the, websitethat we're trying to get a link from.
And in this case, this one here, the URL doesn't look right to me.
But let's just yeah.
And it's not necess, so Iwould not, get a link on this.

(10:58):
The domain rating is really high.
It's getting some traffic, butit doesn't even have HT p s.
So let's skip on number two.
This one is not a great link either.
Again, there's no secure meaningthat it's not really an active site,
otherwise the administrators wouldto fix that going down the list.
This one's just a user profile whichto be frank, we could probably mimic.

(11:18):
And so user profile links are actuallyfairly easy to create cuz you just
try to use your profile and then, Adda link or, a post on that platform.
Now I'm not familiar with this one,but the short answer is you can
register, you could create an accountonline.org, and then you could add an
article that links to your article.

(11:39):
To your article.
So that's that's one back link thatwe could get, frankly, in a few
minutes because creating our userprofile on there would be very easy.
Next up is the this link.
And and you can see we'rejust generally taking a look.
This one is exceptional.
The, site's got a very high traffic.

(11:59):
Definitely some really good link domainsthat are linking to this specific page.
And the it's, it certainlyis getting traffic.
So let's just check this one out.
This is probably a, I wouldassume a very reputable website.
Looks good, looks real.
So we, it passes the sanitycheck at, a high level.

(12:23):
They got ads, but and then let's takea look at the the actual particle.
All right, so this one it's gotall immediately I can see that
they've got the EAT kind of updates.
They've got this.
Very clear author that definewhich great, certainly they've
got some adss, but there's nothinglike the back, an SEO perspective.

(12:46):
This author has writtenquite a few articles.
And so generally speaking, Googlewould trust her a bit higher than
what they would for other ones.
They've got some hashtag tagging in here.
They've got an image.
They've got the Nelson text.
A lot more imagery.
Imagery is definitely keywhen it comes to ranking.
And so they're doing a, good thing there.

(13:08):
They've got all theirimages cited, which is good.
A heck of lot ofs compared to most.
So I'm not gonna open the wholething, but the, short answer is that
we've got a few things checked off.
The high level of the sitelooks somewhat trustable.
We've got an author, very clear author.
We've got the headers theyprobably could do a little bit

(13:29):
of work on their technical.
But the, short answer is, thisthis article might be fit.
So let's, just assume thatthis one was good enough.
I'm not saying it's great cuzit's not, but, oh, sorry, I
was looking at the wrong U url.
Apologies.
This is the no, actually thisis the best monitor tool.
Oh, it was actually this link.

(13:50):
Hey, this, either way, let, thisone's not great, but let's just
assume it was at that point.
I would go through and try and figureout how the heck can we is there any.
Email addresses on this this thisarticle, or maybe is it possible to
actually contact the, lady who wrote it,Chris Fiona, and contact her directly?
And right here I can seethere's an email address.

(14:12):
I could email her.
I could say Hey, Fiona, I'm interestedin writing an article for my client.
My client's got wants toincrease the domain rating.
Can you add a link?
Now th this, type of link, I'mguessing are the 73 domain rating.
Or whatever the in, in the airthese and this much traffic it
probably be over a hundred dollarsAmerican or something like that.

(14:33):
You would write an article for that, that piece, let's just say throw it
down another a hundred dollars there.
So you're in a couple hundreddollars maybe, more frankly.
But generally speaking at a macro level, you can get a, ap some back from that.
There would definitely be some powerbecause the site's getting so much traffic
and it's got a healthy domain rating.

(14:54):
So at a macro level, you can seethat's the methodology that we use.
And clearly filtering based ondomain rating to the sites that
actually have a high domain rating.
Secondly, looking at the domainrating, or sorry, the domain
traffic is the, two contributors.
And then checking out those linkeddomains because if a specific page has

(15:15):
a really high authority, We can go,through and actually get links from it.
Now we can email Fiona and wecan ask her to do a guest post.
Another option is we can email her andask her to do what's called Niche Edit.
Now, a niche edit is actually takingthis existing page that she had already
written, and assuming that had madesense for the the, best plumber tool.

(15:37):
We can, I don't even know where that linkis, but we can ask for, add another link.
To that to our article.
So that's a niche.
You basically find an assistantpage, add another link to it.
And so that, that's a really commontactic for a back link to it's, a

(16:03):
great way to actually get trafficbecause you oftentimes will choose
guests at Misha that's on site.
So you have existing traffic.
Now for the anchor text analysis, when you're getting a link, you wanna
make sure that it's a follow link.
And when you look at all ofthese different links, there's
a, command called follow, andthere's a command called no follow.

(16:23):
And the, short answer or sorry do,follow, no follow, but the if you
look at all of these different links, they're all currently no follow up.
Meaning that there is no I shouldn'tsay there's no, but there's less.
Value in them.
And so when you're the that is definitelya very important characteristic on a link.

(16:47):
And you can see that whenever youget the link credit, and you can
define it when you're contactingthese companies, you always want
to ask them for a new follow link.
So the this the reason is becausethe SEO juice flows through.
Do follow.
S Scogs does not followthrough on no follow.
Don't get me wrong.
Like you'll, get marginal benefits, but dofollow is actually significantly better.

(17:09):
And so when you're looking at backlinks, having domain rating, traffic
follow, are your key contributors.
Relevance is also important.
And so getting a link from asite like clearly this site
isn't great for a a, plumber.
Because it's about whatevernews and lifestyle and whatever
tech and stuff like that.

(17:31):
I, I don't know if this specificcompany has any sites like this
one's a house website that has anarticle on leak repair that's, plum
suggesting these plumber tools.
That's definitely a bit morerelevant looking through.

(17:52):
Dreamland design, probably talkingthrough a lot of house building
re residential retail and stuff.
So the, point is, that you do want tofind links ideally, that are relevant
and that means in a similar niche.
Secondly, you may want to forlocal seo, if you're trying

(18:14):
to rank a plumber in New York.
Then you're gonna want to findNew York sites that are available,
that are promoting New Yorkbusinesses such as better business
bureaus, such as the Chamber ofCommerce, such as listing sites.
So you can see these freekind of directory sites.
Maybe there's a, directory sitethat's available in New York

(18:37):
that would allow you to, post.
Directory sites are often, or citationsare often good for local scl because
they're generally local kind of lists.
So that's another thought.
And then so we've talked throughauthority, which is that domain rating,
talked through relevance which istrying to find things that are in
the same niche and then naturallyfinding sites that actually have

(18:58):
high traffic, which is necessary.
Because really if a site's notgetting any traffic, even if it has
domain rating, it's not helped yet.
So once we go through we get a linkwhether it's a go guest post, Or a
niche edit on one of these sites.
You wanna make sure you wanna takea look, make sure that the link
works, is it going to the right spot?

(19:19):
Secondly, like we already discussed, check to see if it's a do follow
link versus a no follow link, whichdoes not pass through the SEO gs.
If you're if you're creating a guest post, make sure that guest post is high quality.
Now, a lot of like different SEOproviders will actually have AI content.

(19:42):
I am not a fan of AI content by itself.
Don't, get me wrong discerning theheaders, coming up with ideas is all
great with ai and it's clearly chatboutique can write better than most of us.
But when you're creating guest posts, you wanna make sure that you've gotta
humanize on it because AI lies andyou can see that in the content and

(20:03):
people will quickly detect that.
So that, that's a common.
Just an overview of my, experience.
So our, like my agency for example,we create real human content.
We create back links on real sites withreal traffic that are not like spammy
and then ideally in the same niche andusing a proper anchor text which it,

(20:27):
does actually make remarkable resultswhen you, do that with a, less of back
links, which is also important becausethe, clearly it's a ton of work to find.
These webmasters, get their contactinformation, maintain a relationship,
figure out how much they cost.
Each of them typically does requiredifferent types of articles.
So sometimes the base is willsay 700 ish words per guest post.

(20:54):
And some of them the more high qualityones they'll, require thousands.
Some of the high quality siteswill give you a back link, but
after a year, they remove it.
Which is also really common for thereally high quality length because they're
charging basically not just for theright to poster a link to your client on

(21:18):
their website, but you're also paying forthe, just for a specific amount of time.
So these, are alwayskind of considerations.
What's the best back link?
It really depends.
And and, the higher, more webmastersthat you reach out to, And you start
to collect a, bigger database of,webmasters that actually provide links,

(21:39):
the more data you'll have to make aan informed decision at a macro level.
But the short answer is, that it,it does take quite a bit of effort.
So behind the scenes, I've got afull-time person that for the most
part emails different webmasters, and we email hundreds and hundreds
every month to, find sites that arein the same niche as our, clients.

(22:02):
Now, in terms of Monitoring and analyzing.
If you get links from from fiveand from the guy who emailed you
and the girl who emailed you.
And I think we all get I knowa hundred emails every day
from these, kind of providers.
You have to be very careful becausethe domain rating may be high

(22:22):
artificially, but they get no traffic.
Or you, you might get a link, but they remove it a month later.
And so just be thoughtful of that.
These are the kind of things to check.
And and sometimes I, in my opinion,it's better to work with the
webmasters directly because you'vegot a relationship with 'em.
And secondly, you can filter them.
Versus a lot of times when you if youuse these, kind of peripheral providers

(22:47):
and there's a lot of them and there's alot of spam ones just be, really careful.
So focusing on, on, on quantquality basically, Is important.
And pitfall a lot of people do,they they'll, get a list of a
thousand different links andalmost all of them will be done.
And so I, actually have used the, there was one site that they did a

(23:10):
pilot with and just got one of yourblanket packages thousands of links.
And the, short answer is it didn't rank.
And so I, my point on this is, thatit's not how many links at all, and
generally speaking, the the, high qualityones are, more of an investment but

(23:31):
pay off longer because they're, better.
The getting links from low quality sites.
We already talked throughsites that are irrelevant.
So if you got a link from a like SEOis, funny because on a web design,
cause I do web, design, so I oftenget links from clients that are in
plumbing and all that other stuff.

(23:51):
And and the, point is, that froma strictly an SEO perspective, it
would be most ideal if all of thelinks were in SEO or web design.
Not in from a plumber and a lawyer and allthese other websites that you're making.
And so some of the, web guys that I'vetalked to actually don't, have links
from their clients to their own site.

(24:11):
So yeah it's, an interesting conundrumignoring the, anchor text ratio.
So we, spoke briefly about anchor textratios, but you wanna make sure that
the anchor text that you're you're,ranking for does is appropriate.
The.
The sorry, I was just trying to pullup an example, but I, we, I'm not sure

(24:36):
that we have time during this call, butthe, short answer is, that for anchor
text, you wanna make sure you've gotthe right ratio in your backlines.
You do not want to have too manyexact match because you will it
will hurt you in the long run.
And so adding a blank anchor text, which is just your domain or no

(24:56):
nothing, and then having a li a mix of.
Semantic words around yoursearch phrase will be that you're
targeting is, pretty important.
N next up we, talked about thetools and conclusion and I think
that's a, brief little background.
I'm trying to think of anythingelse that that I usually look at.

(25:18):
And one other quick point is thatbroken back links does exist.
And just from an external linkingperspective and we'll, just
check this one website cuz wecame across it just for fun.
But if you click on broken links, oftentimes sites that are older, oh,
so we don't have any here, but let'sjust try a Wikipedia or somewhere.

(25:41):
Org.
Dot org.
The oftentimes when changes are made toeach, oh, there's they're, on top of it.
Let's see here.
By the way the, short answeris, that many sites that I've
audited do actually have links.

(26:01):
And then what happens is they changethe url or they ch they delete
that page and all of a sudden thatlink is broken, meaning that SEO
juice that is passing gets brokenbecause that page doesn't exist.
So when you're migrating a site, make sure that you don't mess with
the URLs is my recommendation.
And if you do make sure you create aredirect and a redirect doesn't pass
the full amount of value through.

(26:24):
But it will pass let's just say 80% orwhatever the number is from, Google.
And so the, redirects are reallyimportant cause they do help a
lot, especially for broken legs.
There is one questionnaire.
Is there a difference for seo creatinga website, say Wix versus WordPress.
So the, point of this presentation wasreally about backlinking, but in terms

(26:48):
of broad on page seo, which is reallywhat your question pertains to, I
believe Wix has been developing a lot.
So they've got some reallystrong capabilities for seo.
And the, so the, short answeris, that technically I think
that you can make WS rank.
I, certainly am a bit morecomfortable with WordPress because

(27:11):
that's where my experience lies.
Secondly because WordPress has the, alot of these Yost and rank map plugins
that are very common commonly used.
But so the, short answer is I thinkfor people that are not familiar with
web technology, Wix is a great option.

(27:31):
It's a it's a wizzywig dragand drop kind of thing.
And, but make sure that when you'regoing in there, that you learned from
get very comfortable with making surethat you're header or you're soap or,
jumping topics here a bit, but the makesure you do your, keyword research.
So far too many times, and I had anothercall a couple nights ago or last night

(27:54):
with another company that had this issue.
They built a beautiful website, but thesearch raises that they're targeting
weren't what the audience was looking for.
And it happens time and time again.
Number one, don't build a website untilyou know what people are searching for.
In Canada, people search for web design.

(28:15):
In the US people searchfor web development.
So in Canada, my websitehas obviously I've got both.
But the, point is, that's reallyimportant when you're building out your
page because your header or your yourUR URL should be web pay from design.
Your your page title shouldhave something web design here.
Meta descriptions, each one's,all of it should have web design.

(28:37):
And then as you start to progressthrough if you do it that method and
you map all the search traces thatyou're, looking to target to pages, you
will know that your website is builtbased on what people are searching.
And the, short answer isyou will get more traffic.
If you build a site based onsome random trademarked phrase

(29:00):
that people aren't using.
Because that's what you call it as abusiness, and that's the proper name.
That's, that may not be what thecustomers are actually searching for.
And so the, short answer is,that the websites are built for
based on what people are, they'rebuilt for Google, number one.
So you have to write your, make sureyour website is readable by Google,
and then meaning check Google tomake sure that there are no errors

(29:25):
in your search console and whatnot.
And then once you've donethat, then augment it.
And add the all of the, fancyscheme and things like that.
Can you do that in We Yes.
Can you do it in WordPress?
Absolutely.
I, in my biased opinion, I thinkWordPress is probably a little bit
easier because it's more popular.

(29:46):
But so at the technical level, I thinkit might have a bit more capabilities,
but at, a as a person who's not astechnical, but is a great great social
and it works well, I hope that helps.
Thanks everyone, and I hopeyou had a couple takeaways.
