Welcome back to the RV Rental Secrets Podcast! After a brief hiatus (thanks to a little shiny object syndrome of our own), Stacy and Russell return with a transparent and timely conversation that every entrepreneur needs to hear. In this episode, they dive into the all-too-common struggle of staying focused in a world overflowing with opportunity, distraction, and constant new ideas.

From chasing new business ideas to building out partially-finished ventures, they share their own recent detours and how they realigned with their core mission: growing the Fireside RV Rental franchise and helping others succeed in RV rentals. They explore the importance of mastering one thing before moving to the next, the power of building systems and teams, and how automation and AI can free up your time without pulling you off-course.

Stacy and Russell also discuss how your business vision acts like a GPS—without it, you're prone to drifting. You'll hear practical tips on converting leads quickly, crafting marketing messages that paint a vivid picture of the RV lifestyle, and why boring businesses are often the most profitable. Plus, they touch on the dangers of the sunk cost fallacy, the importance of falling in love with the process, and the power of saying "no" to things that don't align with your greater purpose.

Whether you're in the RV rental space or running any kind of business, this episode will help you stay grounded, focused, and aligned with the vision that got you started in the first place.

(00:00):
Hey everyone.

(00:00):
Welcome to another episode of RV Rental Secrets podcast.
It's been a bit, Stacy, do we have episodes that are live or is there like a break in our communication? I mean, there's always episodes that they can go back to, but yeah, it's been a few weeks since we posted a new one.

(00:21):
Okay, so there we go.
There's the proof in the pudding.
Today we're gonna talk about keeping the main thing, the main thing, or what did you call it, Stacy? Oh, the shiny object syndrome.
Shiny object syndrome.
And there's a proof right there.
We've had a couple weeks since we put out a podcast.
And the reason why is shiny object syndrome got us.

(00:46):
We're sorry.
Yeah, I think as entrepreneurs, you know, we have this visionary mindset and we always think of new business ideas and new things that we can do within our existing business, and it can get really distracting and kind of pull us away from the one task that's actually making us money.

(01:10):
You know, and it's funny because at the end of the day, we start businesses or we work to make money, and it's not like the business that we're in has a, it's not like any business really has a cap on how much money you can make because you just make more widgets or you sign up more customers or, or.

(01:31):
Whatever the thing is.
So it is funny, it's just, as entrepreneurs, we get distracted.
Well, I did a video on this Monday, Stacy, for our fireside family, and I talked about being a fire starter.
That's what we call ourselves at Fireside.
And I said it's, as entrepreneurs, we're great at starting fires.

(01:53):
But it's doing the thing repetitively when it gets boring, when it's no longer exciting to us, it's continuing to do the thing.
So yeah.
Interesting, interesting stuff.
Yeah, and I think, you know, even in.
In addition to like starting new businesses, you know, we always get that, but just in your own RV rental business too, you can think about different ways to make money.

(02:21):
So, oh, maybe I should do repairs.
Maybe I should do storage.
Maybe I should offer mobile detailing.
Which is great, and if you're at a point in your business where you can support those additional revenue streams, I think that's a good option.
But a lot of times, like you put all this time and effort and research into something where you should really be focusing that time on just, your main thing of the rentals.

(02:48):
And I think that's kind of what we went through recently we have all these ideas for other businesses and other things that we could do.
But we realized, you know, we should just go back and focus on the franchise and the RV rental management because that's what we're good at.
That's where we're making the money and we just need to level up.

(03:09):
I think, you know, that's important.
And to grow a business, you need to just keep leveling up in that same business.
I was just at a mastermind the other week with one of my mentors and he said.
Boring businesses are the ones that make you rich.
When you're bored with the business, you've got it mastered.
You can do it with, no effort.

(03:31):
We get bored.
That's actually the business that we need to continue to really double down and grind on because it's, the challenges are out the way.
You've learned the things that need to be learned.
You've overcome the obstacles.
Maybe you built your staff and your team and now it's a boring business, but.
Great.
You've done what you set out to do now continue to scale that, or now that you have more time, perfect.

(03:56):
Go enjoy your kids and your family or serve your community or do the different things.
It doesn't necessarily have to be right now, it's time to go start another business because I'm bored.
If you've reached your goal, you know, if it's a monetary goal or a goal of how much time you want to have available per week, then what's your bigger vision for life? You know, now start to pursue that.

(04:17):
Yeah, and I think I, I kind of remember that quote.
It was something about like falling in love with the process.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's fall in love.
Oh, that's what it is.
Fall in love with the process, not the result.
And, and so just master the process and kind of like Stacy was saying, there's things we can be doing in the RV rental business, right? Oh, I'm gonna do mobile detailing, I'm gonna do repairs, I'm gonna do this, this, and this.

(04:43):
Yeah, you can do all those things as well, but what's the point of doing all those things when you can master one thing? And, and make the amount of money that you wanna make and not just that.
Master the one thing and then train somebody how to do the thing for you.
And now go on and master the next thing I.

(05:05):
Yeah, and I think, you know, this could be a whole nother episode, but what we're realizing now is there's so much with AI and automations where, you know, once you get to that mastery level, you can really have the time to, you know, research some of those things so that you can automate your business even more to free up more time.
And like you said, you have, you know, time to travel, spend time with your kids and really do some of those personal things that are.

(05:32):
It's gonna fill you up on another level, you know, rather than just making money.
Exactly.
Yeah.
And I think part of that comes down to most people don't have an end goal in mind when they start a business.
They just start a business and now the business is really running them.
So they're just continuing to do things and they're, they're working an obscene amount of hours a week and they really don't have like, Hey, what was my goal with starting this business? Most people, they start a business 'cause their goal is they don't want somebody telling them what to do and when to do it.

(06:03):
They're sick of a 40 hour.
50 hour job where their boss is telling them what they can make and when they can have work off.
Now they own a business and they're, and they're working more than ever before, and now they're trying to start other businesses.
And so it's, it's good to have that end goal limit.
You know what actually happened today, Stacy? I was talking to Ben.

(06:27):
Ben is our sales rep that helps sell our franchise opportunity and one of our franchise.
Really one of our new franchisees that placed the territory lock fee and was starting the onboarding.
Ben was trying to reach out to him to see what's going on because he is very intermittent in his communication.

(06:47):
And he says, oh yeah, we're looking into this wellness opportunity.
Was his response to Ben, and it goes perfectly with the.
The podcast today.
'cause it's like, wait, you literally put a deposit down to start a fireside franchise and now you're looking into a wellness opportunity.
Like, dude, pick what you wanna do and do it.

(07:09):
So I told Ben, I said, well, if he is not sold out and excited for Fireside, just refund him his lock fee and.
Tell 'em good luck, you know, and not good luck.
Like in a bad way.
Like, good luck hope.
Hope we find, but, but isn't that just such the thing that happens as entrepreneurs and, and Stacy, I mean, we literally just walked down this, right? We were, we were running ads on a whole new business.

(07:33):
I mean, we, we had built the business pretty much, I'd say 80% there.
I remember too recently hearing, I think it's in the, the book that I'm reading where it says, you know, we're seeing thousands of ads per day.
So I mean, really the way society is right now.
It's making us this way where there's all these new opportunities out there and we're seeing them constantly.

(07:58):
So like, it's making our mind really unfocused.
So I think by, focusing in on the one thing and then, getting rid of those distractions, like trying to stay off social media and, just keeping your focus and, that's how you're gonna get to where you need to be.
Yeah, I completely agree.

(08:18):
And well, I had just read in an article recently it said you're 80% more likely to convert a lead if you reach out to them within 30 seconds of them opting in.
And the reason why is because if somebody is on Facebook and they click into your ad and, and, and then they continue their scrolling.

(08:42):
They're gonna see 5, 10, 20 more ads, you know, in the next several minutes.
So if you're not top of mind and you j jump on that immediately, you know, and to, I guess to bring that down to like a practical standpoint too.
Think about that as far as mastery of your RV rental business.
When you get an inquiry that comes in don't just simply respond with a quote, like, engage them.

(09:06):
Hey, that sounds like a great trip.
Oh my gosh, I'd love to do that trip.
Or I've done that trip.
Do you have kids? Are the kids going like, immediately get engaged with them and get them into a conversation with you? So that way, if somebody else is then reaching out to them through the.
Platforms or whatever the case may be, they're already have a sense of commitment.

(09:28):
Why? 'cause you've created some sort of connection with them.
So you're in conversation and most likely what's gonna happen is they're gonna tell that other person if they even respond since they're in communication with you, Hey, I'm talking to somebody else.
If they don't work out, I'll let you know.
Which kind of makes me think of like Facebook marketplace, right? Like you go and you buy something off Facebook, marketplace.
And I'll message somebody and they're like, oh yeah, I just had somebody inquire.

(09:50):
I'll let you know if they don't want it, right? Mm-hmm.
They've engaged in a conversation.
And so, but if you're not engaging with that lead, more than just clicking to send a quote, chances are that next person that engages with them, that actually builds some sort of bridge by asking some sort of like, I'll call it like a connecting question, right? Where they're starting to learn about each other they're gonna get that customer and you're not.

(10:16):
Yeah, and I think in addition to that, you know those customers that you're talking to.
Your competition isn't even just other RV rental business owners.
They might be considering a cruise or flying somewhere because they're seeing all of these new ideas for vacations.
So really from a marketing standpoint, getting them excited about the RV experience and, you know, paint a picture of what that experience looks like, if not them.

(10:43):
Just renting an rv, but you know, having those family moments and memories that they're gonna make by the campfire and, playing games on a rainy day in the camper, you really wanna paint that picture in your marketing message so that they really want to take that RV trip than another vacation.

(11:04):
Yeah, that's a great idea.
Yeah.
'cause as soon as they click on some sort of travel ad, now they're gonna start to see other ads in front of them for Yeah.
Airbnb or Fly to Mexico, or this or that.
But if you create that connection immediately and then you start to paint a picture, like Stacy said, of them sitting around a campfire that you've got that engagement, you've got them.

(11:26):
And, and really too, it kind of comes back to like the beginning of what we were talking about is.
You're, as you're painting the picture for them, you're, you're helping them create this mental vision, right? It's the same with your business.
If you don't have a vision for your business, other shiny objects that come along are gonna be attracted to you.
I mean, I, I can't tell you how many entrepreneurs that I talk to and they own a business.

(11:53):
They all, they all sell the essential oils as well.
They're all a rep for Norwex.
Like, whoa, like, how do you do all those businesses? You don't, you can't run all those businesses unless you have staff that's overseeing them for you.
You know? And even with that, like, that's where Stacy and I got excited as, as we feel like we've kind of mastered I don't, it kind of sounds.

(12:19):
Prideful to say that I don't know, or, but we've done a really good job at learning marketing.
That's something we've really put a focus on, and we've done a really good job of that.
And a lot of our stuff is on autopilot now with Fireside.
We're like, oh, we'll go teach other people how to market.
But so it's very easy to do that, but what we can do is we can take that and say, okay, now that we've.

(12:40):
Honed in this piece.
Now let's go back and look at this.
Let's go back and look at that.
Let's go see what's next.
And, and so that's, that's what we're doing.
We literally shut down this business that we started, but didn't even start.
And I wanna encourage you guys on that too.
It's called the sunken Cost Fallacy.
Look that up on chat.
GP two or, or Google.

(13:02):
We feel like once we start to walk down a road that we have to.
See it to the end.
Kinda like you go into a movie and you're sitting in there for 15 move minutes and it's like, oh my gosh, this is horrible.
And you literally have an hour and a half left.
Why in the world would you spend the next hour and a half of your life in that movie when it costs you like $14 and 50 cents to see it like.

(13:26):
Your time is much more valuable than $14 and 50 cents, but it's that sunken cost fallacy.
It's we think, well, I've started this.
I need to complete it.
Well, that's not necessarily true, especially like Stacy said with the shiny object syndrome.
I know I've been caught in that quite a few times with books that I'm reading, and I think that was the first time that you brought it up to me and it really clicked.

(13:51):
'cause it was like, oh yeah, I don't have to finish this book.
Like, I can just move on to something else that I'm really going to enjoy and that's going to, you know, help me personally or professionally.
So I think that's a, a great thing to think of.
I remember that book that we were reading together and I was, I was like, Stacy, I'm just not tracking with this book.

(14:12):
How about you? No, it's not.
I'm not either, but I'm gonna finish it.
I'm like, well, I stopped reading it.
I'm done.
I ain't wasting my time on that anymore.
Yeah.
I was actually thinking about books the other day.
I've got a new book coming out.
It's, it's called my, my, his story.
It's, it's my life through the eyes of God, of things that he is done throughout my life.

(14:34):
And and it's about 50 pages long and I was telling somebody about the book, and same as my last book, it's about 50 pages long.
And as I was telling them about the book, I'm like, yeah, it's not that long of a book.
Like I was saying that, like, I was almost like ashamed of that.
But then as I said that I thought, you know what? Most books are so full of like filler that books don't need to be maybe unless it's like a story, right, of which I don't, what are those called? You read those? I don't read 'em the fake books like the.

(15:06):
Yeah, just fiction.
Fiction.
Yeah.
I see.
I don't even know the name, the, like those books, right? Yeah.
They're long.
'cause it's like a movie, right? There's a whole progression of a story.
Mm-hmm.
But other books, it's like you add so much filler in there just to make it this big book, but really at the end of the day, it's like you can get those nuggets out.
And I was thinking about that with the Headway app.

(15:26):
I just resubscribed to the headway.
App where it basically gives you the whole summarization of a book in like 11 minutes.
And I thought that's perfect because really the main points that you wanna pull out of a book you can get from the Headway app.
And so anyway don't, don't know where I was going with that, but I just, I just.
Wanted to share that.

(15:46):
Yeah.
How did I get off on that tangent, Stacy? I don't know.
It just goes along with mastery, right? Like we find different ways to, you know, use our time and use our time more wisely.
So we find different apps and, and things that we can use to.
Yeah, to streamline like Chad, GPTI mean, I am, I use that thing all day long now.

(16:09):
I mean, for all the different scenarios.
Yeah.
And it's a, it's a, it's such a great tool if, if anybody isn't tapped into AI yet, you're just in denial.
Go ahead and get some sort of app and, and start using it.
And, and speaking of mastery, that's one of Stacy's new focus is, is with us going back full steam into the fireside business is Stacy is, is laser focused on mastering ai and we're gonna be implementing that into several different areas of.

(16:40):
Of our sales, our follow up, our customer service, RV tech support, all different things.
We already have an RV tech chat bot and a couple other things, but we're going all in on learning how to master it, so, yep.
Yeah, so I think we've given a lot of good information today.
You know, we started off with shiny object syndrome and then, you know, gave some other tidbits on marketing and, I don't even know.

(17:05):
We, we went on, on a lot of tangents, but a lot of good information there.
Yeah, definitely.
Yeah.
The, the main point of the podcast today is stay focused.
I've got, I'm a post-it guys.
I'm sure you've probably heard throughout these episodes.
I've got a post-it over to my left and it says, God told me to, and it's got four things on there of what God has told me to do.

(17:29):
Franchise my business, which obviously we've done that homeschool my kids, which I just got done wrapping up homeschool review with the kids serve Christian entrepreneurs.
He's given me specific things so I can go back to that list and say, okay, I.
Am I walking out that list? When different opportunities and options.
And that's the thing about being an entrepreneur.

(17:50):
We see all the opportunities as they come.
We see the needs in the marketplace.
We see how things can be improved, but just because we see a need that doesn't necessarily mean that we're the one called to fulfill that need.
And how do we know that? In conclusion, we know that by knowing the vision, the overall vision and plan that we have for our life.

(18:10):
So if you don't have that.
Go all the way back to step one.
What is my vision? We did this at our retreat, our last couple retreats, Stacy Wright.
We created vision boards.
What is the vision for me and my family? 'cause then when opportunities come your way, you can measure them up against the vision board to see, okay, is this, is this a God destination that I'm moving towards? Or is this a distraction? And as entrepreneurs, 90% of the time, it's gonna be a distraction.

(18:38):
I think that's a perfect way to end this episode.
That's some great advice right there.
Awesome.
Awesome.
Well, hey y'all, it's great to be back with you on the RV Rental Secrets podcast and we will see you guys on the next episode.
