(00:00):
Amidst war and death, in 1871, Our Lady of Hopeappeared in Pont-Main, France. Today we recall
the story of the apparitions as one of the mainMarian apparitions in the 19th century. How
amidst war and disaster, Our Lady brought amessage of hope perfectly applicable to nowadays.
(00:21):
Welcome to Salve Maria, the podcast of the Heraldsof the Gospel.
Salve Maria Fr. Arthur. Salve Maria. Salve MariaFr. Justin. Salve Maria. So today we have a
beautiful Marian apparition that is plenty ofhope, plenty of beauty, and has elements that
(00:42):
none of the other apparitions that we are familiarwith happen to have, right? Quite similar to
Lourdes, but with some details that not evenin Lourdes, you can find them. Some beautiful
moments in which our lady, for example, is singingwith the children. And she directs the choir.
(01:03):
She's getting the direction of the singing. It's absolutely fantastic. Well, but I think
one of the main characteristics of these ismaybe to bring our audience into the context
of what is happening at that moment in France, because it's very, very tragic and actually
very dark what's happening there, right? It'sincredibly dark. One of the statements that
(01:26):
was going around in France at that time wasthat God had forgotten them. So they were saying
that it was a common thing as it was a veryhard winter, the winter Our Lady appears, people
were saying, don't worry, God forgot us. Ourprayers are useless. And that was the attitude
of the people. They had gone from the euphoriaof the second empire of Napoleon to the point
(01:49):
of complete despair. But they're in the middleof a big war, right? Oh, but it's a brutal
war and they're losing it. Losing. catastrophicmanners. So you've got to remember all that
hope and that euphoria has been crushed to theground. And in this little town, Hamlet, it's
a better word, this is where the bodies werebeing brought from the front line. So all these
(02:13):
people are seeing are bodies of relatives ofpeople that they may have known, maybe relatives,
and it just keeps coming. And there are no victoriescoming. Just to recall the word with Prussia,
just happened. Prussia has invaded France, andthen it is one defeat after the other, right?
(02:34):
We just picked up here a list of battles thatare happening at the time. Imagine they invaded
in August, 1870, right? But the war was declaredby France. France declares the war against
Prussia. But the Prussians provoked it in July.Well, but still. But they declared the war,
yeah. The French threw the first punch and wentfor it, and they got their nose broken. But
(02:56):
let me go to the list of casualties that Franceis receiving right now. On August the 4th,
1870, Battle of Bissenburg, right? That waslight, 1200 killed, wounded or missing. Next
episode, Battle of Worth, 6th of August. Andtwo days later, 9,000 total casualties. Again,
(03:18):
another battle almost on the same date, Battleof... is Pijeren, 4,000 killed, wounded, or
captured. On the 15th of August, 16th of August,Mar Latour, 6,000 casualties. Next battle,
1,200 casualties. Then you have the famous Siegeof Metz. There the French army got surrounded,
(03:40):
170,000 prisoners. Then another one, Battleof Sedan, not the First World War, but earlier,
4,000 casualties. the third frozen the tower. That's right. He was taken prisoner there.
80,000 French troops are prisoners as well. The siege of Paris. Here now, we are in the
(04:03):
middle of the defenders and civilians sufferedheavily from bombardment, from disease and
famine. The military attempts failed to breakthe city free. 20,000 to 25,000 casualties.
Then the next battle, this is 2nd of December1870, 5,000 casualties. The battles around
(04:29):
OrlΓ©ans from November to December, another 8,000casualties. Finally, the Battle of Le Mans,
7,000 casualties. So adding them all, we arecounting 80,000 prisoners, 75,000 killed, wounded
or maimed, and... Six months. There we go. Andthis is when our lady of Pont-Main appears.
(04:55):
Our lady of hope. So at the end, my immaculateheart will triumph that she said in Fatima
later on. It happened already in Pont-Main becausefor the French, they were having one bad news
after the other. They were being beaten by thePrussians. The Prussians were advancing, advancing
(05:16):
from the north east and... They finally arrivedto the doors of Pomer, to Laval, which is very
near. In that little village of Pomer, therewas a very good priest called Michel Guerin.
He was there already 20 years before. The villagewas very run down. There was no faith because
(05:38):
there were no parish priests, people couldn'tgo to mass, etc. And he started kind of a spiritual
restoration of Pomer. and he obtained littlestatues of Mary that he gave to all the houses,
and they started to pray the rosary. Every daythey were praying the rosary in Poman. This
(06:01):
is before the apparition. But then when thewar comes, people get worried because, well,
we are praying, but nothing happens. We arelosing, losing. And just for the note, Father,
the Prussians, let's say they are here. Thecity of Laval is here. Our village of Poman
is right in the middle. And they have 36 people, men from the, and young people from the town
(06:24):
that are also in the army. So they are all concernedabout this. When we start reading that it was
the evening and then all of a sudden it wassorry, it wasn't just a peaceful evening. It
was cold. It was winter. It was January. Andthey have the Prussians there just invading
and they're in the middle. And those 38 thatwent to war was basically the whole youth of
(06:45):
the village. Yeah, the 500 probably. Yeah, exactly. So the situation was desperate. Two days before
the apparition, the priest is in the churchand he's leading some prayers and nobody answers.
Nobody wants to pray, they are upset. And heasks, why don't you pray? And one person finally
(07:09):
stands up and said, God is not listening tous. He's not listening to us. God's forgotten
us. So why should we pray? Terrible. It's aterrible situation. In the town, they have
his tomb, and there's a devotion to him. He'sconsidered a saint. No, but what he did is
impressive, but his chapel is still there. Sowhen you go in there, you can see the actual,
(07:33):
it's not large, it's very small. It's rightbeside the basilica. So this omega ray has
to face that crisis of the village, and he trustsin Mary. It's a national crisis. It's not just
a national crisis. No, in a sense, the epic,Portman was the example of the soul of France.
(07:58):
Of course. Right, so you have in a micro sensewhat the whole country was going through. On
the 17th of January, 1871, at around 5 p.m.,a little boy called Eugene, who is working
with his father and his brother. in the farmand he goes out to the open air in order to
(08:23):
breathe a little bit and to come back to work. And then he sees in the sky a lady. I think
he calls his brother. See what I saw. Joseph. And he comes and he also sees. And then the
father comes and the mother comes and they don'tsee. But they realize that the children are
(08:45):
seeing something. And then two other girls come, and without telling them anything, they start
describing our lady. Well, because they didsomething very nice, in a small town. Sister
Vitaleen was the school teacher of the town, right? They called her, and she brings two
of her girls as well. And then, no, she doesn'tsee anything either, Sister Vitaleen, but the
(09:11):
two girls see our lady perfectly, and they describe.matching completely the description of the
two boys. So sister goes and says, well, maybewe don't see it and the children see it. Precisely,
because both are saying without communicating. But this is an aspect of humility, because
if they were proud of I don't see it and there'snothing happening here. Well, remember what
(09:35):
happened to the three children in Fatima, themother of Lucia, she was very stern to Lucia.
She said, listen. I mean, you're not going tomake me, here put me to shame, huh? It was
terrible. Well, and they were threatened, threatenedand they were accused of being lying, when
they were not. In this case, there's never thatsituation. No, no, they accept, the adults
(10:00):
don't see, but they accept what the childrenare saying. So, finally the... The parish priest
comes. When we were at the best, Father, wegot into an infomercial. But stay until the
end, because this just started. Now we're goingto see how our Lady appeared, what did she
say, and what's the message of hope that markedhistory so much, and it also is going to mark
(10:25):
us throughout this episode as well. Stay untilthe end. We'll be back in a second. Salve Maria.

and of seeking God's mercy in a troubled So,mark your calendars, set your alarms, and make

p.m. May God's love and mercy shine upon youalways. And until we meet again, may Almighty
God bless you, the Father and the Son and theHoly Spirit. Amen. So we are back in the middle
(12:22):
of this terrible war that France is sufferingand then Our Lady is appearing in Pond Man.
And then, Father... There was a beautiful narrationhere because one of the children, who later
became a priest, is very beautiful, what hesaid. He describes our lady and he says, "'She
(12:43):
was young and tall in stature, "'clad in a garmentof deep blue. "'Her dress was covered with
brilliant gold stars.'" Always gold stars arearound the old lady, in the Miraculous Medal
as well, right? "'She wore slippers as the sameblue.' as the dress ornamented with gold bows.
(13:04):
On the head was a black veil half covering theforehead, concealing the hair and ears and
falling over the shoulders. Like our littleFatima as well, no? A different manner. Above
these was a crown resembling a diadem, higherin front than elsewhere and widening out at
the sides. Her hands were small and extendedtowards us as in the miraculous medal. then
(13:30):
her face had the most exquisite delicacy anda smile of ineffable sweetness. And here comes
something beautiful. He says, the eyes of anutterable tenderness were fixed on us. Like
a true mother, she seemed happier in lookingat us than we in contemplating her. Perfect.
So there we have now all together the childrenseeing it. Only the children see this. The
(13:55):
adults do not. So they see in the sky, a phrasethat is written. It's not that Mary is saying
this, but pray my children, God will hear youin a short time. Beautiful. My son allows himself
to be moved. So you see, they were not praying. And that was the crisis of France. They were
(14:25):
thinking that God will not listen to them anymore.Mary comes to say, no, you have to pray and
God will listen to you. And then randomly theybegin singing a hymn to Our Lady, Our Lady
of Hope, Mother of Hope, and Our Lady beginsto laugh. Yeah. Finally, you're understanding.
Then they sing the Ave Maris Tella, and duringthe singing, Mary also sings with them and
(14:52):
she even directs the singing. So it's a very.Happy is a very touching, very joyful moment.
And then they move and they start singing asong to our Lord, in which then she takes an
aspect of sorrow and she begins contemplatinga crucifix. One of the things that is interesting
about it is that it's one of the few apparitionsof our Lady in which she appears with a crucifix.
(15:16):
Yes, it appears in her hands, red cross withour Lord and... Our lady is, of course, she's
sad. Along with the red cross becomes the wordsunderneath it of Jesus Christ. So it's a lot
of straightforward messaging. But here the Chronicleof the Apparition says that when the Avumaristela
(15:39):
finished, right, there were two small whitecrosses that appeared on her shoulders before
she disappeared behind a cloud. As the nightprayers came to an end, basically the whole
population of the little town was there. Theoperation came to a close. It was about nine
(16:00):
o'clock. The phenomenon had lasted about threehours. It's a lot. And now we can maybe change
the camera for a moment and we can go to thepalace of the bishop because the Prussian general,
he was staying with the bishop there. It's notclear if he invaded, he took over or he had
(16:21):
maybe the bishop as a prisoner, but he announces, right, and says, this is in Lemma happening.
He goes and says, by this time, my troops havealready invaded Laval. He's counting on this
and actually in the same evening, the Prussiantroops inside of Laval stopped. Exactly. Stopped
(16:42):
at half past five o'clock. Then they say thatabout this time when the apparition first appeared
above Pont-Main, a few miles away, General Schmidtis reported to have said in the morning of
the 18th, so right the morning of the next day,we cannot go further. Yonder in the direction
(17:03):
of Brittany there is an invisible Madonna barringthe way. So our lady appears to both sides.
She stops the Germans. And she's singing withthe French. When she says, God will hear you
in a short time, right? And this is happeningin the evening, close to 8.30 probably and
(17:26):
so on. By the next morning, that's it. So we'retalking about the apparition on January 17th,
the Prussians stop on January 18th, and thenthe armistice, complete peace happens on the
23rd. So it was very quick, very, very quick. It was really Our Lady who finished the war.
And a point very close to the mothers of thattown is that the 38 constricted young men that
(17:52):
had been away in war all come home unscathed. That's incredible. So the very thing that they
had been worried about which was, will God hearour prayer? He does. Gives them back their
children. It's a fantastic lesson of trust. You didn't trust me, but I was protecting them.
You should have trust. in me. And then it'sbeautiful, the apparition actually was officially
(18:17):
recognized the next year, 1872, it was very, very quick. The fastest recognition of any
apparition maybe in history. In history, ooh, that's interesting Father. What's interesting
with it is they begin building this Basilica, this Gothic Basilica, in this tiny town. Between
sizes, there is no match for size. Beautiful. You know, Gothic revival, Gothic made with
(18:46):
stone, made with granite, beautiful stainedglass windows. Unfortunately, some of the windows
disappeared during the second world war andthey never came back. But when they built it,
they built it with the idea of pilgrimage. Theydidn't build it as a basilica in a classic
sense for stet masses. They did that. Therewould be groups coming in all the time. So
(19:10):
the side⦠side areas are open with the ideathat pilgrim groups could come in and leave.
It's not in proportion to the village. It'smuch bigger than what a village church would
be. There's no comparison. Always our lady appearingin small places. Fatima was nothing, Lourdes
(19:32):
was nothing, I don't know, Velankan in Indiawas nothing. Always our lady chooses this.
And apparently the ground is not very solid. So the architect said, no, therefore we need
to put a lot of stained glasses and less stonein order to make it lighter. And this is why
there are so many stained glasses in the Basilicaand they're beautiful. So there's a lot of
(19:56):
light and it's absolutely- One of the othernames that they gave to the shrine is Our Lady
of Light. Oh, look at that. Because of this.Yeah, and one of the specialists on- This shrine
is a member of the third order of the heraldsand she did a paper on it. Exactly. And in
it, it talks about the aspect of light beingkey to the whole apparition of Our Lady. She
(20:20):
brought light where there was darkness. Sheappeared in January where it was incredibly
dark. So it's really important for us to lookat it saying, you know, Our Lady comes at the
darkest moments when you've given up and shecomes and cheers up these people. One of the
aspects that's also fascinating about the shrinetoday is the barn that all those people were
working in still exists. You go inside and theyhave pictures of each segment of the apparition.
(20:46):
They were working willowing wheat, so that'swhy they went outside. They couldn't breathe.
Couldn't breathe, that's why. So they came outside.Exactly. And in the middle of their work, Our
Lady comes and gives them a break. They arecompletely beautiful. And at the same time,
Father, we can say, right, that this is a messageof, it's a very simple message, message of
prayer, message of hope. And it's written inthe sky. Our Lady appeared in the sky, above
(21:13):
the bunkhouse, where a lot of people stayedduring the nights. So she was very present.
Nowadays, it's a place where, according to whatpeople say here over the internet, I will notice
200,000 people a year that go there to visit. The two major apparition times are the day
of the apparition in January and the other isthe 15th of August. And it's so much so that
(21:36):
the town post-placket telling you if you'renot planning on staying for the celebrations
of the 15th, please leave before eight o'clockbecause you won't be able to leave otherwise.
The town closes down. So I think that in themoment in which so much is being said about
war nowadays, not the world, to remind us ofPome is providential. It's very important,
(22:04):
very timely, because we know that very likelywe are going to go to a very difficult moment.
We know that mankind is going to be once again,as the French were, having bad news after the
other. very, very possibly, instead of havingmore trust in God, we are going to have less
(22:24):
trust in God, and we are going to be put tothe test. And we need to remind ourselves that
who is going to solve the problem is going tobe Mary. Mary is the one that already she announces
in many other places, and in Fatima very especially. But this Pome apparition
(22:48):
has in giving faith and doing a spiritual restorationof mankind. This is not going to be only Our
Lady appearing for a little village. Now OurLady has to appear for the whole world. I don't
(23:09):
know how it's going to be, but the whole worldhas to see Mary from all the continents, etc.
seeing Mary and Mary giving the solution tothe world problems. Some episodes ago we were
talking about our lady of Akita and how tremendousthose apparitions and that message is when
(23:34):
she says that basically it's going to be soterrible that the living will envy the dead.
So how much really know if that's so how muchconfidence we need, right? And also something
else, and with this probably wrap the episodetoday, but it's interesting to see how it was
different. This apparition was different thanLa Salette because the children, for instance,
(23:56):
out of the four that were there, remember thatsister that brought two girls and the other
two boys that were there, the two boys becamepriests, right? And out of the other two, one
became a nun and the other one, she was thegatekeeper for the parish in which this priest
was there. And what her job was, in a sense, was to be the promoter of devotion. Everyone
(24:21):
who came left with a picture, a story, and go.And in the Basilica at Pauvin, the three main
stained glasses, the center one is Pauvin, thenyou have on one side Lourdes, on the other
side La Salette. In Northern France, wheneveryou go to the churches, you start perceiving,
(24:41):
once you've been there, that... Images of OurLady of Portmanteau are the dominant one. They're
everywhere. And there was a big wave of devotionto Our Lady in a very special way. She was
the savior of France. So Father, maybe whenwe reach 100,000 subscribers. we can go and
(25:02):
visit Pome. We make the promise here officiallyand then... We're going to invite everyone
who wants to come. Everybody who is a subscriberis also invited to come to this pilgrimage.
Let's throw the flag there and who knows, maybein a short time, we all can be there to celebrate
this. So let us ask in the session of Our Ladyof Hope of Pome, the blessing of Almighty God,
(25:28):
Father, Son and Holy Spirit come upon all ofyou. and all our listeners and remain forever.
Amen.
