(00:00):
During that time when we were so weak and so desperate, they
prayed for us, they fed us, they took care of our
second daughter. They did all the things that we as Christians should
do. And I made that proverbial bet at that time with
the Lord. And I know we shouldn't go to the Lord this way, but this
is the way I did it. I said, lord, if you will save
(00:21):
my daughter, I will serve you the rest of my life.
And he honored that. Hey, everyone, this is Yvette
Hampton. Welcome back to the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast. I am back today with
Patti Garibay and she joined me last week. If you guys
missed last week's episode, go back and listen to that. She is the
founder and executive director of American Heritage Girls. And we
(00:44):
are having a great time just talking about God's faithfulness in getting this
organization started. This ministry. I shouldn't even say organization. It's really a
ministry. Um, and they have done amazing work over the past 30 years.
And we're going to talk a little bit more about that and just the impact
that this has had on, on the girls and
on the families who have been part of this incredible ministry, our
(01:06):
family included. I told you guys last week about our, my
girls and I being part of an AHG troop, actually, both in Georgia
and here in Oklahoma, and how we went on this camping
trip and I had no idea what I was doing. And we had other families
helping us and it, it was fun. It, we had a great time. Um,
so we're, we're going to talk more about that today and, and Patty's going
(01:28):
to tell a story about God's faithfulness and how he has done amazing
things in and through her and her family. But before
we get into our conversation, I want to thank our sponsor, Apologia.

I want to remind you if you missed the announcement last week, that our family,
and by our family, I mean Garrett and myself and Lacy, our youngest,
because Brooklyn are oldest. I have not made this announcement.
Actually. She is now a full fledged adult. She
moved out of our house. She. I know, I hear you. Mama's going, oh,
(02:55):
yes, that was me. I cried big tears
and I don't cry easily. But she's only 10 minutes down the road. She's.
She moved in with a friend of hers and she is working a big girl
job and she's loving life and so it has been fun to watch her just,
you know, move into adult life. So all that to say, God
is good, he is taking good care of her. We love getting to watch her
(03:17):
figure out this adult life. Um, but she will not be be with us.
But Garrett and myself and Lacy will be in Branson, Missouri at
the Teach them Diligently convention at the Branson Convention Center, May
15th through 17th. And there's lots, I
mean, just an incredible lineup of speakers, including Heidi St. John, Ken Ham, and
Ginger Hubbard. And we will be at the Ginger Hubbard booth for
(03:40):
most of the weekend. So if you guys want to find us, please join
us at that conference and come and say hi to us. And if you would
like a discount code, which you probably do if you're going to go, you can
register on their website, teach them diligently.net and you can get $25.
Not 25%. $25, actually, which is
25% because it's $200. $25 off
(04:01):
with the code SR for Schoolhouse Rocked. So
join us there. We would love, love, love to meet you. Anyway, Patti, welcome
back to the Schoolhouse Rock podcast. I'm sorry for that long introduction. I usually
don't have introductions that long.
It's a pleasure to be back with you. Thank you. Thank you. It's a pleasure
to have you back. I want to talk about a book
(04:24):
that you recently wrote. And the book is called why curse the
darkness when you can light a candle. And I love the
subtitle of this book. The subtitle is a story of trust and
obedience to inspire those who desire to make a kingdom
impact, yet struggle with the fear of inadequacy. I think
that's one of the best subtitles I've ever heard because that's, I think, what most
(04:46):
of us want, whether we're making an impact, a kingdom impact, through
homeschooling our kids or through serving in church or whatever it is that
we're doing. We often have that fear of inadequacy. And so
I would love for you to talk about your journey
of, of God's faithfulness and what he's
done through you to make a kingdom impact. You
(05:08):
know, it all starts back when I was a young girl.
Honestly. I was raised by a
chronically ill dad. He was handicapped. You might
say he had acute multiple sclerosis. So I never knew him
to walk. Matter of fact, he brought me down the aisle with his
electric wheelchair because I insisted that he do that.
(05:30):
He was an amazing man of faith. His body was
weak and broken, but he was a strong tower to me.
And we had a most beautiful relationship as a father,
daughter. My mother had raised five kids and
she, it was very difficult for her to deal with all of
this and then having to go and be the primary breadwinner without a
(05:52):
college education. And so she turned to alcohol
instead of to. The Lord. Did not know the Lord
in the same way that my father did. And so it was a difficult
childhood to say the least. And I think that gives me a fire in
my belly for what I do today and that there's got to be a
better way. And if girls knew the love of the Lord early, they may not
(06:15):
have made the struggles and the mistakes that I did as a young
girl and a young teen. With that being said,
I pursued. I was not a Christian at the time. I knew the
ways of the Lord in that I knew that Jesus was, was
king. But my faith tradition was not one of relationship with the Lord.
If you don't understand what I'm saying. Sure. And so I'm so very
(06:38):
grateful that at least I had that nugget. Because when I was
faced with some really hard decisions as I had made bad decisions
in college and I became
pregnant in college
with my child, with my husband, who's currently
my husband, and we made that work. It was not an easy way to start
(06:59):
and it was certainly not the way the Lord would have wanted it. But the
Lord honored that decision. And I believe if I did not have my faith
component, it could have been a much worse decision. Well, that
little lady, that little baby that I had, her name's Rachel.
And at the age of four, Rachel had
been playing with some neighbor kids. Pat and I were
(07:22):
off to look for a new home. We were being relocated. My parents in law
were babysitting my daughter and they were playing badminton with the next door
neighbors and having a great time sort of whipping that badminton racket to hear
the wind go. And that was a lot of fun. But not until
it landed in Rachel's temple. And that knocked her
out to a point where she hit her head very
(07:44):
hard. My mother in law who was babysitting, as I mentioned, she's an
rn. She checked for anything that could be a concussion and did
all the right protocol. But a week later, Rachel was
wesseling, as she would call it, wrestling with her daddy and she started
to vomit profusely and she, we couldn't get her to stop vomiting.
So we brought her to the ER up in Columbus, Ohio and they said,
(08:07):
you know what, Mr. Mrs. Garibay, you've got a big issue here.
Your four year old daughter has a cerebral hematoma
in the left quadrant of her brain that is the size of a golf ball.
Oh wow. It's in an inoperable area of the brain
and she is going to continue to have seizures.
And so they put her in 24 hour observation for two,
(08:30):
three weeks. And across from her was a young man that was
also in the same neurosurgery ward and he had, he was a
quadriplegic at that point. He had to trach in the whole nine yards. At nine
yards, nine, whatever. I want to say. But I'll tell you what, in my
mommy brain event, I thought that is what is going to happen to my
daughter. And so I was new
(08:51):
to the faith. I can't say that I was saved at that point.
I was going back to church. My husband and I knew that was what was
going to be good for our kids. And so we were seeking, I
tried to make changes in the local church to have a nursery and they said
no. So I literally opened up the yellow pages, looked for a
church that had a nursery and went to that church. It
(09:12):
happened to be a Nazarene church. It was one of those really old
congregations, a bit of fire and brimstone. But I'll tell you, those people loved
on us. And during that time when we were so
weak and so desperate, they prayed for us, they fed us, they
took care of our, our second daughter. They did all the things
that we as Christians should do to those all around
(09:35):
us. Yeah. And I made that proverbial bet at that
time with the Lord. And I know we shouldn't go to the Lord this way,
but this is the way I did it. I said, lord, if you will
save my daughter, I will serve you the rest of my life.
And he honored that, and I've honored him.
(09:55):
And that is what's led to the start of American Heritage Girls.
It was through mama's grief, not
just the potential passing of her daughter Rachel,
whose name means little lamb. And I thought, lord, do I have to
sacrifice this baby to be in your
will? And if so be it, if that's true.
(10:17):
But the Lord has been faithful. And today,
as we go on with 30 years of ministry and I
announced my retirement, my board of
trustees did a national search of over 400 candidates, and
they have recently named that little Liam, Rachel,
(10:38):
the nascence of my faith to be the next leader of
American Heritage Girls. And so,
Yvette, that story I never would have told you before I
wrote this book, because this book had to be written. The Lord
kept saying to me, Psalm 78, 6,
write it down, so the next generation would know.
(11:00):
I decided to self published, by the way, because I was so concerned
and very, very clear on what the fight with the Girl Scouts
was in regards to starting American Heritage Girls, because I fought
the good fight, but the things that they did to me was people would not
believe. And I was afraid that a publisher would take that
out because it was controversial, but it was all true. And so we self
(11:22):
published that story's in there, as well as the story of Rachel and the fact
that I almost aborted her because that was what college
girls did back then. Yeah, it was shortly after Roie Wade,
and that was what was available. But the Lord has
been so faithful. And Eyvette, the. The things he's done,
the doors he's opened, the relationships he's allowed, the blessings
(11:44):
that he's put on our family from
now, from then until now, and will continue to do
so generation upon generation.
I can't even articulate it. It's been so amazing to see.
Yeah, that is incredible. What an amazing
story. Talk about God's call on your life.
(12:07):
Because oftentimes as
Christians, we wonder, how do we know if God's
calling us? And I know that there are many, even homeschool moms who say, I
don't know if God's calling me to do this. I don't know if God's calling
me to homeschool. I don't know if God is calling me to serve in my
church. I don't know if God's calling me to serve in an American Heritage Girls
troop or to serve, you know, in an, you know,
(12:31):
a Pro Life center or whatever it is.
How do we recognize the call of. God on our
lives that's a really good question. You know,
we always hear the, the adage, the small, quiet
voice of God. Yeah. You know, and for some people, they hear. They
literally hear a calling. But for me, and for
(12:53):
many of us, it is more of an affirmation of what we
believe the Lord is saying through prayer. You know, through our relationship
with God, through our prayer, through our. For me, my angst
and my calling out, my Habakkuk moment of Lord, please
help me. Yeah. And he says that, he says that. And
then your own earthly father says that, and then
(13:16):
your husband says that. And then you open scripture and
it says that. So it affirms, affirms, affirms.
And then you start to see fruits of the labor. And not
always is it really the Lord just pouring out. I mean, we need a
finance like you want to believe of that. I mean, to start something like this.
Yeah. We were struggling. I was a stay at home mom. I was,
(13:38):
as I, as I say in the book, I was a jack of all trades,
a master of none. And I felt that way. I
couldn't even balance my checkbook, much less a ministry budget
of what $10 million we're at now. That, that would
have. That was beyond my understanding. But our God is
so goody that he doesn't let us see the big picture. He lets us
(13:59):
step one step at a time. And so I decided
it was time to get out of the boat and answer that call. There was
too much affirming. There was the Lord's call.
It was clear. It became so clear that I
hesitate to even think about what would have happened if I
hadn't said yes. Yeah. But that's what he
(14:20):
does. So look for affirmations around that. Listen to his
voice, continue in prayer, pick up your cross every
day. And I know, Yvette, you do the same thing with your
ministry. It's very important that we continue to seek
his will. And it's not always easy and it's not always blessed as we
consider blessed. Yeah. But it is blessed because his
(14:42):
timeline is so different than ours. Yeah, it really
is. And sometimes he closes doors when
we think they should be open. And we get upset because we're like, but why
God? I thought that you wanted me to do this thing.
And it's because he has a bigger, better door for us to enter
through. And I know it doesn't come without sacrifice and it doesn't come without
(15:04):
pain. I mean, anytime we serve the Lord, it comes with sacrifice,
it comes with hardships. And oftentimes those hardships Come. Because
the enemy wants to attack God's people. If we are serving the Lord, he
is going to do everything he can to attack us so that we won't and
so that we'll give up. You know, we have been in that place many times
with the Schoolhouse Rocked ministry where we're just like, what are we even doing? I
(15:25):
mean, there were times when we. We even wanted to stop
production on the movie because we were like, what is. What is
happening? Why are we. Why are we not getting this movie done and into people's
hands? And that's an interesting story. We've told that on the podcast. But, you know,
we didn't know why production was taking so long. God kept taking us on different
detours. And then Covid happened, and there were,
(15:47):
you know, millions of people were ready to hear the message of homeschooling. Their. Their
hearts were finally open to it, but we couldn't see it way back
at the beginning, you know, and it's hard to
sometimes, you know, lean on. On the
Lord and trust him when we don't see what he can see, because
he does see the big picture, and he is faithful. I don't know what your
(16:09):
life is, but mine is very similar. Be still and know that I am God.
Girl. Get out of your own way. Let God. What perfect
timing. What a great story. Because that movie's just amazing. And it was,
for a time such as that. That's right. You know, but you didn't know it.
You didn't know that was coming. Right? And the same, really, with my book. I
wrote that during COVID too, and never, ever would have shared that
(16:30):
embarrassing sin in my life. I mean, that ended
up being the most glorious blessing the Lord might have ever given
me. Oh. I mean, you look at how God redeemed that. That's an incredible
story. I love that you were transparent about that, because I think so many
times people look at leaders like yourself and think,
man, they have it all together. They must be some kind of
(16:52):
superwoman that they've started this amazing big ministry, and they've
touched so many lives. And I love that you're transparent about that.
And you can say, this is where I was. But God, look at
what God did. Because I was willing to say yes. We often talk on
this podcast about Queen Esther and about Mary, the mother of
Jesus. They were just ordinary women who were willing to say yes,
(17:14):
you know, and it just. It. It blows my mind, because that's what we
are. That's what I am. That's what you are. That's what we all are. It's
not the Pinterest perfect mom that we all see or the, you know, perfect
Facebook or Instagram mom that we all see who only shows their
best side. You know, we're humans and we're sinful and
God still uses us. He used King David, you know, he was sinful
(17:37):
and he did amazing things through him. And so, you know, it's just
incredible. So we're going to take a break, though. We'll be right back. Homeschooling is

Bootcamp I am back with Patty.
Before the break, Patty, you were telling us just your incredible testimony of how
God brought you from someone who
wasn't truly following the Lord to someone who called out and
just cried out to the Lord and said, lord, I will be committed to you,
(19:51):
I will serve you. And you've done that. And because
of that, he was able to use your testimony to then
set a legacy for your girls. Do you have any sons or do
you have just girls? I have a son at the very end. My
child's a boy. Yeah. Okay. Okay. That's awesome. Oh, I bet he was so
spoiled by his big sisters. The golden boy, they all called him. Yeah, I can
(20:14):
imagine. I can imagine. But setting that legacy for your
children that you had, and it wasn't through perfection.
It was through God working in you and on you. In the process of
doing that, talk really quickly about the importance of
establishing a legacy for us to leave for our kids.
You know, family is so very important. It's a gift from the Lord
(20:37):
that we have family. And when we take it
for granted or we ignore it, I believe that the Lord is not happy
with us. I think he wants us to say, thank you, Father.
Every day for our family and for Pat and I, family is so
important that every Sunday we have Sunday dinners after church, and there is
21 of us. And that is a sacrifice that we have committed.
(21:00):
Committed to. Yeah, doing. And as a result, you know, the Lord
has blessed that. And these. These cousins are best friends. These
siblings are best friends. And so we're able to carry on.
And they're. They are all Christ followers. And. And
that's not due to us. It's because they've seen and we've
modeled, but the Lord has just been there the
(21:21):
whole time. And that's not to say we haven't had mistakes in our
family and that it's. It's not a rosy, perfect family. Sure, Satan is
having a field day at times and will continue to, but we know
our strength is in God and we know that our strength is in the Lord.
So legacy is so important and to carry on.
You know, we are. My husband and I are basically first generation Christians, if
(21:44):
you look at it in the way of a relationship with Christ, kind of a
Christian. And so we're settling. I always say my spiritual father was Dr.
James Dobson. And when I was his very first guest on his My Family
talk show, I couldn't believe it. You know, I was crying like a
groupie would with her favorite rock star. That was my doctor. Yeah. You were
fangirling over him. I was, totally. And he almost
(22:05):
laughing at me. But. But, you know, we need to find those kind of
spiritual mentors if they are not
intrinsic within our family, and oftentimes they are. So don't use that
as an excuse. And I was also trying to use the excuse of
my. My. My sin is I could
never speak about purity. Well, yes, you can speak about purity, because actually, you can
(22:27):
speak up purity, probably better than those that weren't right. You know, that. That did
not make those mistakes because, you know the price that comes with
not being that person. You know what I'm saying? So I feel like
everything that we look at is our legacy.
It's not a legacy in the true sense of, oh, let's write this on the
tombstone. But rather, are we vulnerable? Are we transparent?
(22:48):
Are we real with our kids? Do we let them see that we
struggle? Do they let them see that we go to prayer all the time
because we don't know the answers? Those are what I think
forms and shapes people and forms and shapes
children. Not this authoritarian,
authoritarian type approach to parenting and not the
(23:09):
I'm your best friend approach to parenting. There is a middle ground,
and we need to know that we have been called by the Lord to be
those parents, but we have not been called to. To absolutely be the perfect parent.
We need to strive to do that. And so while we're
in that desert place, wherever that might be, we continue to
walk forward and say yes to God. And that's where the legacy
(23:32):
comes in and where the kids and grandkids, and hopefully the great
grandkids will see that Gamma and Pop
Pop really love Jesus above all. Oh, I love
that you have set that legacy for your kids and
for your grandkids and your great grandkids. Because it really is living
life side by side. I mean, it's one of the greatest blessings of
(23:54):
homeschooling is that our kids get to see us and they see the ugly side
of us, and they see the beautiful side of us. And we get to go
to them and say, you know what? I really screwed up. Please forgive me. But
we also get to go to them and say, look at God's faithfulness. And I
have to remind myself sometimes to talk. I mean, I'm with my girls all the
time, but I have to remember sometimes to remind them,
(24:15):
look what God did here. You know, we prayed for this thing, and look how
God answered this prayer. And again, sometimes that doesn't mean he's going to answer it
the way that we want him to answer, but he's still faithful. He still hears
our prayers. And he sees us. He sees our tears, he sees our joy. He
sees all of us. And so our kids get to
experience that alongside of us when we're living day to day
(24:36):
with them. And so what. What a great way to
just to establish a strong legacy with them. I look forward to the
days that you're in where our girls come over. As, you know,
it's this, you know, my, my fantasy right now. But, you know, they'll be married
and they'll have kids and they'll come over and we'll have family meals together. And
right now it's. It's silly game nights like we had last night, you know,
(24:57):
with our girls and, you know, goofing off and stuff. But I look forward to
seeing this legacy carry forward into the next
generation. So, so great. All right, let me ask you about one other thing. We
have a few minutes left, and I would love to talk about your podcast. You
have the Raising Godly Girls podcast. And I, again,
I love this because I love girls and I
(25:19):
love talking about all things girly. Tell us about the podcast. Yes. So
this podcast, again, the Mason started
around Covid. All of our troops couldn't meet. We almost the whole
ministry. I was really wondering, was this going to be over? I mean,
honestly. Because membership is our driving force, right. Of being
able to financially do the work that we do. And with
(25:42):
the churches being shut down, whatever. I wrote the book, and then we felt that
the Lord was calling, he was calling us to do some
help for our parents. How can all parents, whether they're American
Heritage Girl parents or not, benefit from
biblical counsel around parenting? So the way the prototype
is, is, is that twice a week there are two moms on
(26:04):
our staff. They, they change up a little, talking about raising girls
in today's cultural moment. What does that look like? We have,
we have an issue that we're addressing on those two days, and they're, they're talking
back and forth, and they have great personalities. Then on Saturday, I
am the, the guest or the hostess. I'm sorry. And I
invite thought leaders in that area of whatever
(26:26):
that topic might be, and they lend their expertise and
resource to really have a call to action for parents so
that by the end of these three, during a week, three
topical sessions, they're ready to sort of deal with that issue.
And like I said, we touch it all. We talk about gender, we
talk about all kinds of environmental stewardship, we talk about
(26:48):
all the hot topics, but it's all from a biblical
worldview. Yeah. And we, we love that. We also
have free ebooks. When you go to our website, you can download free
ebooks about different things from biblical worldview
to gender to resilience to, gosh,
environmental Stewardship, which I already mentioned. We just did a Christmas one. There's a whole
(27:10):
slew of wonderful free ebooks that will actually have activities
for you to do with your kiddos to talk about this issue, because, again, you
want to be the main discipler of your child and therefore the main
discussion agent around these cultural issues, because they all do affect our
kids. Whether we try to insulate them, and we often do when we
homeschool, we try to insulate, but they're still going to have to be in the
(27:32):
main fray. We got to make them strong. Apologetics is important.
You know, we as American Heritage Girls, link with Colson center and Summit and
all these places that really help armor up our kiddos because there's
just not enough out there for us to. You can't get enough
of that stuff right, because Satan's right after it. But we can
armor up, and that's what we try to do in American Heritage Girls. Amen. You
(27:55):
know, Ephesians talks about putting on the full armor of God. And so let me
ask you this as our closing question. As we're looking at putting on the full
armor of God for our girls, we're helping them piece by
piece. You know, I mean, there. There's a lot of armor
to be putting on. What does it look like? And you said in your podcast
you always have a call to action at the end. What would your call to
(28:16):
action be to our audience, to those listening who have girls? And we're doing
our best. We're just, you know, praying our way through this
parenting because it's hard. It's so hard
sometimes. What is your call to action for putting on
that armor onto our girls? Well, we know that the
primary piece of the armor is to know
(28:38):
God and to know His Word and to be able to hold
it into our hearts and. And whether you're somebody like myself who it's
something sometimes hard for me to know the chapter in the verse and to be
able to give the address. I know Scripture, and that is the
promise I can hold onto and I can be reminded. And I'm teaching
that to the kids. And that's exactly what you want to do as a primary
(29:00):
disciple or parents. You may not have a biblical
worldview. You may not be in the Word like you should, but today is a
day to start. It is definitely the day to start. So that is the
primary thing, is teach your kids a biblical worldview. Put it on
the door frame. Deuteronomy talks about that. The door frame. It doesn't physically
necessarily Mean a door frame, guys? It means it's in your heart. It's daily.
(29:21):
We're talking about the Lord and how he perceives things. And
I often like to talk about the cultural thing that's happening today and what is
God's answer to that cultural thing. And they're rarely the same right now,
Yvette. I mean, it's almost polar opposite. So we gotta talk about
that. The next thing is bring around as many people as you
can to go shoulder to shoulder, because this is a battle and you
(29:43):
need community. You need Christian community. You also need
resource. Seek out areas that are experts.
If you need some psychological counseling for your daughter who is
experiencing anxiety that needs a diagnosis, check out the
American association of Christian Psychologists. Do not go down
the street to your local children's hospital. They will not be giving you the
(30:05):
information you. From a biblical worldview. Right. It's
hard. Being parents are hard, but it is possible
with the grace of God and with community and with the word of the
Lord. Amen. I love that
so much. We have a big, big job and. And I'm learning
with my oldest. And I know you've learned this with yours as well. It
(30:27):
doesn't end when they move out of the house. No.
It just gets to be a different complication. Right.
It really is. It's such a weird dynamic of, oh,
wait, now, she doesn't live here. She doesn't have to do what I say. I
can't ground her, you know, but you just hope that they
heed your advice. And so that. That's the stage that we're at, you know, and
(30:49):
she's. She's making decisions. Some that we wouldn't choose,
but many that we would. And we're proud of the, the young woman, the
godly young woman that she's still growing into. And so it's neat to see God
working on her. And. And one of the things that we see is God doing
things in her life that I think he wouldn't otherwise be able to do if
she was still living at home. You know, isn't that what
(31:10):
we're supposed to raise them up to do is to be able to be on
their own? They're going to skin their knees. What our prayer is that they don't
face plant. That's right. We want them to be able to get up and learn
from those desert times and look at scripture. That's. When
Moses heard the word of God, it was always in the desert times. He
had to climb up a very large mountain. I just recently went to the Holy
(31:30):
Land before the conflict happened. And I couldn't believe how fit Moses
must have been to keep going up that mountain. Right. Wow. Wow.
So, yes, it's, it's amazing. It's a beautiful journey to be a parent.
It is to be a Christian. Amen.
