Don't Be Stupid – Why We Hate Correction (Proverbs 12) 🧠🚫

Body: Okay, don't get mad at me. I didn't write it. Solomon did.

Proverbs 12:1 says: "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid."

That is the NIV translation, and it doesn't pull any punches. In active addiction, we were allergic to correction. If you told us to slow down, we sped up. If you told us we had a problem, we attacked you. We defended our "right" to be wrong until it almost killed us.

Today on Day 12, we are getting honest about why we hate advice—and why refusing to listen is the quickest way to stay stuck.

In this video, we’re breaking down: ✅ The difference between "Knowledge" and "Stupidity" (it's about the ego). ✅ Words like Swords: Are you using your mouth to heal people or stab them? (v. 18). ✅ The Anxiety Cure: How a kind word can lift the heaviest weight (v. 25).

If you are ready to drop the ego and actually learn something, this one is for you.

Okay, so I'm gonna warn youhere right now, I didn't write

(00:02):
Proverbs chapter 12, Solomon did.
Now, if I called youstupid, that would be rude.
But when the Bible says it,it's called a revelation.
So welcome to day 12 of a proverbA day keeps the police away.
My name is Robert and I'm a peer recoverycoach that sees the lighter side of life.
Today as we hit Proverbs 12verse one comes out swinging.

(00:22):
It tells us the exact difference betweena wise person and a stupid person.
And spoiler alert, it hasnothing to do with your IQ and
everything to do with your ego.
So let's start with the hardestpill to swallow in recovery.
Taking advice.
We spent years thinking that we hadit all figured out even while our
lives were burning down around us.

(00:44):
So let's check out this firstsection here in Proverbs.
If you love learning, you lovethe discipline that goes with it.
How shortsighted to refuse correction.
A good person basks in the delightof God and he wants nothing
to do with devious schemers.
You can't find firm footing in a swamp, but life rooted in God stands firm.

(01:07):
A hearty wife invigorates her husband, but a frigid woman is cancer in the bones.
The thinking of principledpeople makes for justice.
The plots of degenerates corrupt.
The words of the wicked kill andthe speech of the upright saves.
Wicked people fall to pieces.
There's nothing to them.

(01:28):
The homes of good people hold together.
A person who talks sense is honored.
Airheads are held in contempt.
Better to be ordinary and workfor a living than act important
and starve in the process.
Good people are good to their animals.
The "good hearted" badpeople kick and abuse them.

(01:50):
The one who stays on thejob has food on the table.
The witless chase whims and fancies.
What the wicked constructfinally falls into ruin.
While the roots of the righteousgive life and more life, The gossip
of bad people gets them in trouble.
The conversation of goodpeople keeps them out of it.

(02:11):
Well-spoken words, bring satisfaction.
Well done work has its own reward.
Fools are headstrongand do what they like.
Wise people take advice.
All right, here we go.
Whoever hates correction is stupid.
That's the NIV translation andit doesn't pull any punches here.
In active addiction, we hated correction.

(02:33):
I know I did.
If somebody told me toslow down, I sped up.
If somebody told me to stop, I used more.
We treated advice likeit was an attack on us.
Solomon says The way of a fool seems rightto him, and that was us in addiction.
Our way seemed right.
It felt right, but lookwhere our way got us.

(02:55):
Here's the definition of wisdom today.
Stop trusting your own broken compass.
If you hate being told you'rewrong, you are staying stuck.
Smart people, people who staysober love correction because
they know it saves their life.
Next.
Let's talk about the weaponthat we all carry in our mouths.
When we get defensive,we tend to get dangerous.

(03:16):
let's jump back in.
Fools have short fuses andexplode all too quickly.
The prudent quietly shrug off insults.
Truthful witness by a good person, clears the air, but liars lay
down a smoke screen of deceit.
Rash language cuts and maims, butthere's healing in the words of the wise.

(03:37):
Truth Lasts, lies are heretoday and gone tomorrow.
Evil scheming distorts the schemer.
Peace planning brings joy to the planner.
No evil can overwhelm a good person, butthe wicked have their hands full of it.
God can't stomach liars.
He loves the company ofthose who keep their word.

(03:58):
Prudent people don'tflaunt their knowledge.
Talkative fools broadcast their silliness.
The diligent find freedom in their work.
The lazy are oppressed by work.
All right, here we go.
Reckless words, pierce like swords.
Think about that lastargument that you had.
Did you use your words to explainhow you felt, or did you use

(04:20):
them to stab the other person?
In recovery, we have tostop being assassins.
We used to cut down people justto make ourselves feel taller.
We use sarcasm and guilt and rage asweapons, but the text here says that
the tongue of the wise brings healing.
That's the shift.
Are you a swordsman stabbing everybodywho annoys you or are you a surgeon

(04:44):
using your words to fix things?
Put the sword down.
It's not protectingyou, it's isolating you.
Finally, let's talk aboutthe heaviness of life.
We all deal with anxiety, butSolomon gives us a prescription
that doesn't come in a pill bottle.
Let's finish out the chapterhere, starting at verse 25.
Worry weighs us down.

(05:05):
A cheerful word picks us up.
A good person survives misfortune, but a wicked life invites disaster.
A lazy life is an empty life.
But early to rise gets the job done.
Good men and women travel right into life.
Sins detours take you straight to hell.
I love that line.

(05:26):
The anxiety weighs down the heart.
You know that feeling?
It feels like a physicalweight on your chest.
In the streets
we tried to lift thatweight with substances.
We tried to numb it, but italways came back heavier.
Solomon says, the antidote is a kind word.
This is why community matters.
This is why we gather at Outreach 419.

(05:46):
Sometimes you can't lift theweight off of your own heart.
You need someone else to speaka kind word to you to help you
lift it, and more importantly, you can be that for someone else.
You have the power to lift someone'sanxiety just by encouraging them.
Never underestimate that power.
So the takeaways from Proverbs chapter12, to keep the police outta your

(06:08):
life today are, number one, don'tbe stupid if you hate correction.
You're blocking your own growth.
Listen to advice.
Number two, drop the sword.
Stop stabbing people with reckless words.
Speak to heal, not to hurt.
And number three, lift the weight.
Anxiety is heavy.
Use kind words to help lift theload for yourself and for others.

(06:32):
And I will see you tomorrow.
For day 13, we're gonna be talkingabout hope deferred and why
hanging out with the wrong peopleis ultimately a death sentence.
If you're ready to stop being stupidabout correction, and I'm including
myself in that one there, do me a favor.
