Don't Sign Your Name To Their Chaos (Proverbs 6)

You can work perfectly on your own recovery, but if you sign your name to someone else's chaos, you are going down with their ship. Welcome to Day 6 of "A Proverb A Day Keeps The Police Away."

In today’s breakdown of Proverbs 6 (The Message Version):

  • The "Rescue" Trap: Solomon warns us against "going into hock" with our neighbors. If you are trapped in a bad deal, get out like your life depends on it.

  • The Ant vs. The Lazybones: Why mature recovery means doing the work when no one is watching.

  • Playing With Fire: "Can you scoop fire into your lap and not be burned?" We discuss why flirting with the old life is a "brainless act."

The Bottom Line: You can't keep the police away if you are aiding and abetting someone else's drama. Cut the rope.

You can work perfectlyon your own recovery.

(00:02):
You can stay sober and pay yourbills and mind your own business.
But if you sign your name tosomeone else's chaos, you're
gonna go down with their ship.
Welcome to day six of a proverb a day.
Keeps the police away.
My name is Robert and I'm a peer recoverycoach who sees the lighter side of life.
Thanks for joining me today for thisseries where we're going through the
book of Proverbs and we're learninghow to apply the wisdom in that book

(00:24):
to our recovery program and our life.
Today in chapter six, Solomon givesus a masterclass in boundaries.
He's telling us why tryingto rescue people is a trap.
Why laziness is a fast track to poverty.
And then at the end, he's gonnalist out the seven specific
things that God absolutely hates.
Let's get right into it.

(00:45):
We start out here with awarning about money and promises
in the recovery community.
We love to help people, but Solomonsays here, there's a difference
between helping someone and actuallybecoming a hostage to their debt.
Let's check out the first few verses here.
Dear friend, if you've gone intohock with your neighbor or locked

(01:05):
yourself into a deal with a stranger,if you've impulsively promised the
shirt off of your back and now findyourself shivering out in the cold.
Friend, don't waste a minute.
Get yourself out of that mess.
You're in that man's clutches.
Go and put on a long face.
Act desperate.
Don't procrastinate.

(01:27):
There's no time to lose.
Run like a deer from the hunter.
Fly like a bird from the trapper.
Listen to the urgency in that last verse.
He says, run for your lifelike a deer from the hunter.
fly like a bird from the trapper.
He's not talking about beingnice, he's talking about survival.
In recovery.

(01:47):
Sometimes we have this rescue fetish.
We wanna fix everybody, you know, likeco-sign on a car for them, or bail
people outta jail, or let people crashon the couch who we know are using
Solomon calls this going into hock.
You're taking on debt that isn't yours.
The lesson here though, is don't signyour name to someone else's instability.

(02:08):
If you're already trapped, swallow your pride.
Go to them.
Talk to him and get out of the deal.
Cut the rope before theanchor pulls you under.
Next Solomon shiftsgears to our work ethic.
He tells us to look atthe ground for advice.
If you're struggling withgetting off the couch in early
recovery, this section is for you.

(02:29):
You lazy fool.
Look at an ant, watch it closely.
Let it teach you a thing or two.
Nobody has to tell itwhat to do all summer.
It stores up food at harvest time.
It's stockpiles provisions.
So how long are you going tolaze around and do nothing?
How long before you get out of bed?

(02:51):
A nap here and a nap there.
A day off here and a day off there.
Sit back.
Take it easy.
Do you know what comes next?
Just this.
You can look forward to a dirt poor life.
Poverty.
Your permanent house guest.
friends, this is one of the mostfamous word pictures in the Bible.
The ant, the message here says the anthas no overseer, no boss, no director.

(03:16):
That is the key to mature recovery.
When we were on paper or in rehab orin jail, we did the right thing because
we had to, we had a boss, we had a po.
But the ant does the rightthing when no one's watching.
Solomon warns that if we just sleepall day and take shortcuts, poverty
pounces on you like a bandit.

(03:38):
If you're waiting for someone toforce you to get a job or work the
steps, you're already in trouble.
Be the ant, do the next rightthing without needing an audience.
Next Chapter six describes the kind ofperson that we need to avoid becoming
the riffraff, and then gives us a literallist of seven things that God can't stand.

(03:58):
swindlers and scoundrels talkout of both sides of their mouth.
They wink at each other.
They shuffle their feet.
They cross their fingersbehind their backs.
Their perverse minds are alwayscooking up something nasty,
always stirring up trouble.
Catastrophe is just aroundthe corner for them.
A total wreck.
Their lives ruined beyond repair.

(04:21):
Here are six things that God hates andone more that he loathes with a passion.
Eyes that are arrogant.
A tongue that lies.
Hands that murder the innocent.
A heart that hatches evil plots.
Feet that race down a wicked track.
A mouth that lies under oath.
And a troublemaker in the family.

(04:43):
The message version here callsthem riffraff and scoundrels.
It says that they are constantliars who sow discord.
That phrase sowing discord means creatingdrama where there shouldn't be any.
We all know people who aren't happyunless they're stirring the pot.
And then look at the list of whatGod hates, number one on the list.
Arrogant eyes.

(05:04):
That means ego.
That means thinking that you'rebetter than everyone else.
Also on the list hands that shedinnocent blood that's harming others
for your gain and a lying tongue.
If you wanna keep the police outtayour life and you want to keep
God on your side, check your ego.
Stop the drama and tell the truth.

(05:25):
Solomon ends the chapter herewith one final reality check.
This is for anybody who thinks thatthey're the exception to the rule.
Anybody who thinks that youknow you can hang out in the
barbershop and not get a haircut.
Good friend, follow yourfather's good advice.
Don't wander off fromyour mother's teachings.
Wrap yourself in them from head to toe.

(05:45):
Wear them like a scarf around your neck.
Wherever you walk, they'll guide you.
Whenever you rest, they'll guard you.
When you wake up, they'lltell you what's next.
For sound advice is a beacon.
Good teaching is a light.
Moral discipline is a life path.
They'll protect you frompromiscuous women, from the

(06:06):
seductive talk of some temptress.
Don't lustfully fantasize on her beautynor be taken in by her bedroom Eyes.
You can buy an hour with a prostitutefor a loaf of bread, but a promiscuous
woman may well eat you alive.
Can you build a fire in yourlap and not burn your pants?
Can you walk barefoot on hotcoals and not get blisters?

(06:29):
It's the same thing when you havesex with your neighbor's wife.
Touch her and you'll pay for it.
No excuses.
Hunger is no excuse for a thief to steal.
When he's caught, he has to pay it back.
Even if he has to puthis whole house in Hock.
Adultery is a brainless act.
Soul destroying, self-destructive.

(06:51):
Expect a bloody nose, a black eye,and a reputation ruined for good,
for jealousy detonates rage in acheated husband, wild for revenge.
He won't make allowances.
Nothing you say or paywill make it all right.
Neither bribes norreason will satisfy him.
I love how practical this is.

(07:13):
Can you scoop fire in yourlap and not be burned?
Oh man.
In addiction, we spent yearstrying to prove this verse wrong.
We thought we were fireproof.
We thought we could, you know, hangout with the old crew and not use.
We thought we could keep the stash inthe house just in case and not touch it.
We thought maybe we couldjust sell dope and not use.

(07:35):
Solomon's saying here,stop testing physics.
If you play with fire, you will get burned.
It's not a, maybe, it's a guarantee.
He calls it a brainless act.
Recovery though is about respectingthe fire enough to stay away from it.
Don't carry matches if youdon't wanna start a fire.

(07:55):
So the takeaways from this chapter to keepthe police outta your life today are this.
Number one, don't co-sign chaos.
If you're trapped in a bad deal, run like a deer from a hunter.
Get out now.
Number two, be the ant.
Don't wait for a boss ora PO to tell you to work.
Do it because it needs to be done.
And number three, check your ego.

(08:17):
God hates the arrogant eyes and the drama.
Stay humble and keep the peace.
And I'll see you tomorrow For day seven,we're gonna be talking about the simpleton
and how to avoid being easily fooled.
