The Secret Trap – Why We Love The Forbidden (Proverbs 9) 🚫

Let’s be honest. We’ve all been there. We’ve all chased something just because it felt "off-limits."

Proverbs 9 talks about the woman named Folly who sits at the door and says, "Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!" That is the lie of addiction. That is the lie that keeps us sick. It tells us the secret life is the good life—until the trap snaps shut.

Today on Day 9, we are exposing the trap. We’re talking about why the forbidden feels so good in the moment, but why it always leaves us empty in the end.

In this video, we’re breaking down:

✅ The lie that "secret" means "safe."

✅ Why we crave what destroys us.

✅ How to flip the script and find real satisfaction that doesn't hide in the dark.

Recovery is about bringing the secrets into the light. Because what you heal, you don’t have to hide.

(00:00):
In active addiction, wewere obsessed with secrets.

(00:03):
we thought that if wehit it, it didn't count.
We thought the sneakinessactually made the high better.
Well, welcome to day nine of aproverb A day keeps the police away.
My name is Robert and I'm a peerrecovery coach who sees the lighter
side of life today here in chapternine, Solomon presents us with two
invitations to two very different parties.
One's a feast that gives you life, andthe other one's a trap house that promises

(00:27):
a good time, but ends in a funeral.
Let's see which invitationyou're accepting today.
All right, first, let's look atthat invitation from Lady Wisdom.
She's not offering a quick fix.
She's offering a solidfoundation and a full meal.
Listen to how she invites us in.
Lady Wisdom has builtand furnished her home.
It's supported by seven hewn Timbers.

(00:49):
The banquet meal is ready to be served.
Lamb roasted wine poured outtable set with silver and flowers,
having dismissed her serving maids.
Lady wisdom goes to town, standsin a prominent place and invites
everyone within sound of her voice.
Are you confused about life?
Don't know what's going on.

(01:09):
Come with me.
Oh, come and have dinner with me.
I've prepared a wonderfulspread fresh baked bread, roast
lamb, carefully selected wines.
Leave your impoverishedconfusion and live.
walk up the street to a life with meaning.
There's a massive difference betweensurviving and feasting in the text that

(01:32):
we just read, wisdom talks about leavingconfusion behind and actually living.
That's the story of recovery.
When we're out in the streets,we're starving spiritually, we're
confused, we're running on empty.
Wisdom says, come inside.
She has built a housewith a solid structure.
She's prepared real food.

(01:52):
The takeaway here is that getting soberisn't just about giving up the fun.
It's about finally getting to sitdown at a table where you get fed.
It's trading the chaos for clarity, Buthere's the catch to stay at wisdom's
table, you have to be willing totake feedback in this next section.
Solomon separates the grownupsfrom the children based on

(02:12):
how they handle criticism.
If you reason with an arrogant cynic, you'll get slapped in the face, confront
bad behavior, and get a kick in the shins.
So don't waste your time on a scoffer.
All you'll get for your pains is abuse.
But if you correct those who careabout life, that's different.
They'll love you for it.
Save your breath for the wise.

(02:34):
They'll be wiser for it.
Tell good people what you know.
They'll profit from it.
Skilled living gets it startin the fear of God insight into
life from knowing a holy God.
It's through me.
Lady wisdom that your life deepens.
And the years of your life, ripen, livewisely and wisdom will permeate your life.

(02:55):
Mock life and life will mock you.
That is the ultimate heatcheck for your recovery.
Solomon basically says here, if youcorrect a fool, they're gonna hate you.
And if you correct a wise person, theywill love you in active addiction.
If you tried to tell me the truthabout myself, I made you the enemy.
I got defensive, I lashed out becausethat's my ego protecting the addiction.

(03:20):
But in recovery, feedback is fuel.
When your sponsor or your spousecalls you out on your behavior, do
you get mad or do you say thank you?
If you wanna keep the policeoutta your life, you have
to learn to love correction.
Finally we get the second invitation.
This is the one that we know too well.
it's the Voice of Addiction or Folly, and she's selling us a lie about

(03:42):
how good the secret life tastes.
Then there's this other woman,Madam Prostitute, brazen,
empty headed, frivolous.
She sits on the front porch of her houseon Main Street, and as people walk by
minding their own business, calls out,
are you confused about life?
Don't know what's going on.
Steal off with me andI'll show you a good time.

(04:05):
No one will ever know.
I'll give you the time of your life,But they don't know about all the
skeletons in her closet and thatall of her guests end up in hell.
Did you catch the sales pitch there?
She tells the simpleton thatthe theft is sweet or that the
secret things taste better.
That's the hook of addiction.
It tells you that the forbiddenfruit is the sweetest.

(04:27):
It sells you on the rushof getting away with it.
But look at the very last verse.
The guests don't know that they'rewalking into a graveyard from the outside.
It looks like a party on the inside.
It's a funeral.
Solomon is warning us here.
Don't let the sweetnessof the secret fool you.
The aftertaste is death.
Don't accept the invitation.

(04:48):
So the takeaways from chapter nine tokeep the police outta your life today are
this, number one, sit at the right table.
Trade the confusion of thestreets for the clarity of wisdom.
Number two, check your ego.
When someone corrects you, don't get mad, say thank you.
And number three, don't eat thesecret food if you have to hide it.

(05:09):
It's a trap.
The secret life leads to the grave.
So friends, I'll seeyou tomorrow for day 10.
We're gonna be talking aboutthe mouth and why silence is
often your best legal defense.
I know my mouth got me in trouble alot when I was in active addiction.

Drop a water emoji If you're done drinkingthat poison and share this with a friend
who might need a little encouragementin their life today, we can all use
a little encouragement and friends.
As always, stay sober, not boring.
