(00:00):
Welcome to Succeed Even If. I'm Tom Arcu, the communication sage and spoken
word strategist. And I'm Johanna.
In this episode, we're talking about transform impossible to possible.
Johanna, when have you faced something where it felt impossible?
When I was trying to write my first book. I'm dyslexic, so I found it was like
(00:22):
almost impossible until I got help.
Exactly. So it became possible because you had to adjust something.
You couldn't do it just by yourself, but you could have a team.
And then it became possible. And this is what I've learned. There have been
some times where I've been really low, where something knocked me down.
Whether it was a combination, tough things, tragic things going on in family,
(00:46):
or something impinging from the outside, some toxic people, whatever it was,
there have been some times where I've been really low and it felt like something was impossible.
For example, when you said that it felt impossible to do your book,
for me, it was being a lead singer of a band.
So many years ago, I was in the studio and I was awful. I just, thanks.
(01:12):
But I was, I couldn't stay on key.
I could not accomplish lead singing. Now my partner in the band thought I was
a good enough singer for this band, but that day I was terrible.
I just couldn't do it. But then the sound recorder said, hey,
why don't we just come back next week?
Do it again. And that was exactly the right thing because every day I was in
college and what I had to do was the whole week I rehearsed in a bathroom.
(01:36):
Every day I rehearsed, I practiced. And so when the next Saturday came by, I could sing.
I could do the impossible compared to what it was last week.
It was impossible for me to be on key.
It was impossible for me to do the song right. So this is what I know about impossible.
Many times our first glance is not accurate in that it can become possible.
(02:00):
And so what we need to do, especially if we're we're surrounded by toxic people,
people who are dream smashers or happiness stealers or energy vampires,
is we've got to rise out of that swamp. So our word is rise.
And the first thing is R for reveal the impossible.
(02:20):
At one point, I went through a time where I felt so bad in my chest,
it felt like there was acid. I felt so bad.
Some tragic things were going on with family and even more things were going on that were terrible.
And so I got to this point where I thought, I don't think I can escape from
this one work environment and have work that nourishes me. It felt impossible.
(02:40):
But when I say revealed impossible, what you do is you realize,
okay, what is it that you desperately want, but seems impossible.
And then you reveal something else. You actually think of the direction you want to go in.
Now, many years earlier, I thought I was only going to be a feature film director.
(03:01):
And I did get to direct my first feature film. I got to act,
got to do stunts, got to write it, got to produce it, had a co-producer, all kinds of things.
Even had an American Eagle airplane and San Luis Obispo Airport.
I got to do all that stuff. And I thought I was just going to be a feature film
director and that was my life. Well, that film didn't make any money.
I bet you that burst your bottle. Well, it was quite disappointing.
(03:24):
But my life also expanded because I became an educator and an international speaker.
I got to teach entrepreneurs in Thailand and New Zealand.
The thought of just being one thing, it wasn't impossible because I'm still
a screenwriter. I still got projects going.
But at the same time, what was possible is to change my thought and go in a
(03:48):
direction saying I'm a communicator, not just a film director.
Would you say that you're changing your perspective?
Absolutely. And I have a number of people in my immediate circle who are really
sharp and kind and insightful, and they help me expand my perspective.
Like I can see more of the horizon when I talk with them. Even at redbubble.com
with my store called Defiant Giant, there is a phrase that's on a number of
(04:13):
products called great ideas rise in dialogue.
And that's the point. With the right people around you, that helps.
Books of rise. I is inspire direction.
So when you have these good people around you and you have a direction,
my direction is communicator.
That means I'm not just a feature film director, but I'm a novelist.
And I'm also a writer of additional books, a total of 54 books on Amazon and
(04:35):
33 audio books on audible.com.
So the idea here is that as a communicator, I have a direction.
So I is inspire your direction.
S is support others and yourself.
This is what I learned. If you support a lot of folks, a subset of those folks
will be kind and support you.
It's going to be a subset. Some people are wrecks. Some people cannot support
(04:59):
you. Some people won't care.
They won't do something reciprocal. They won't be kind.
But if you are good, there's an old phrase saying that if you keep giving and
giving, many times you will be having and having.
And so that's important. And then finally, E is energize actions that build.
This is something that was a rough thing.
Back in 1995, I was part of a team that got the first bank online.
(05:23):
And the only people who remember this are the people who run the Wells Fargo
Museum, the Wells Fargo Bank Museum.
Because in 1995, Wells Fargo was the first bank to go online.
And I was part of a 30-person team. We did it. And they said,
good job, goodbye. Oh, wow. They laid us all off.
So I realized if you're building something for somebody else,
(05:44):
they can still at any moment change their mind and say, goodbye.
But if you build something for yourself where you have some leadership role,
then you can continue to build it. That's why I say energize actions that build.
Now, I want to go all the way back to Reveal the Impossible.
And there's a phrase that I came up with. It's name it to contain it.
(06:05):
And what I mean by that is that when you have these doubts and you have these
bad feelings and you've been impinged upon by toxic people or something like that.
You've got to contain that. It can't run the whole day. But you do reveal what
you think is impossible because it might be controlling you on a subconscious
level. And then you pick your direction.
And my direction changed from just being a feature film director to being a
(06:26):
communicator. Weren't you also a storyteller as a communicator?
Absolutely. That's a really good distinction that I'm not just a communicator.
I'm a storyteller. And absolutely, every time I talk about good ideas or if
I even use my science, which is Code Access Reset, I'm giving people stories
so that they can have an idea and make it stick.
(06:47):
You rise out of that dark place, whether you have dark feelings in yourself
or toxic people have pushed you down.
I even shared earlier about our Red Bubble store. The brand is We Are Defiant Giants.
We Are Defiant Giants. What do we defy? We defy all those toxic people who want to keep us small.
We have a tribe. We are defiant giants. You do the impossible when you rise.
(07:13):
And the way you defy the toxic people and you defy the negative thoughts that
you might have is that you contain it.
You reveal the impossible, you identify what you feel is impossible,
and then you name it to contain it. It doesn't run your whole day.
Even if you just took five minutes a day, and sometimes that's all I can do
(07:34):
when I'm working on my latest novel, and just write for five minutes,
I've contained the rest of the day, the other feelings, the other situations.
I've contained it. And for those five minutes, I'm on, I'm in, I've got my timer going.
And then- Is this about compartmentalizing?
Yes, that's true. But you're choosing. You're choosing when to pull yourself back or away.
(07:55):
One of my favorite ideas is this. Sometimes a friend might look on my face and
they might see, what was that?
And I'd say, oh, that's just some negative thoughts that I'm letting go by on the stream.
I don't even repeat it. I'm compartmentalizing. I'm not letting those negative
thoughts poison the time I have with that friend.
We choose how to run our day. We choose how much of our day is poisoned by those
(08:19):
people out there. We choose to make the impossible possible.
And one of the ways we do that is to learn and grow and experience.
