Most of the video footage featured in the YouTube video was shot by Derek Hama while he was wing foil racing. We talk about the experience of foil racing from Maui to Molokai and the Molokai Molokai race the following day. The previous weekend we competed in the Paddle Imua race, which was the first race of the Koa Kai triple crown race series. The M2M race had a big turnout with 120 SUP foil racers and over 40 wing foilers. The conditions were beautiful and unlike last year, the wind was blowing all the way to the finish, with the exception of a wind shadow behind the pier. Derek, Kevin, Matt and I discuss the race, the equipment we used, the conditions, and things we learned for next year. We hope you enjoy it, we will cover the Molokai to Oahu Foil race in next weeks video, so stay tuned for the M2O foil edition video! Epic Maui to Molokai Wing Foiling Adventure!

In this exciting episode from Blue Planet, Robert Stehlik and his friends from the O’ahu wing foiling crew share their incredible journey from Maui to Molokai and the subsequent Molokai Holokai race. The video captures stunning footage and provides insights into the experiences of the participants, making it a must-watch for foiling enthusiasts. The adventure begins with Derek, Kevin, and Matt, who join Robert for a long weekend in Maui. They kick off the trip with a Maliko run on Thursday, amidst light winds that soon pick up, setting a promising tone for the upcoming races. Derek captures captivating footage, while Kevin and Matt share their first-time experiences and the camaraderie that binds the group. Race day arrives with excitement and anticipation. The team dons pink shirts, fuels up, and heads to the starting line. The video showcases the impressive turnout, with 120 standup paddle foilers ready to race. Despite expecting lighter winds, the conditions turn out to be perfect, adding to the thrill of the race. Matt recounts his navigational challenges and the beauty of the surroundings, highlighting the unique aspects of the race. Derek, ever the team player, stops to help a fellow racer in distress, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship that defines the event. This act of kindness, however, doesn’t deter his performance as he continues to capture amazing footage and finishes the race strong. The video transitions to the next day, featuring the Kamalo run along the Molokai coast. The smaller race allows the crew to enjoy a fast, exhilarating sprint. Robert and Matt discuss their equipment choices and strategies, emphasizing the importance of having the right gear for varying conditions. The camaraderie and shared experiences create a sense of unity and joy among the participants. One standout moment is Eli’s perseverance as he completes the race with a ripped center strut on his wing, demonstrating resilience and determination. The crew reflects on the challenges and learnings, with Matt humorously earning the nickname “Matt Hotfoot Tarini” for his barefoot escapades on Molokai’s hot asphalt. The video captures not just the competitive spirit but also the fun and enjoyment of the sport. Kevin’s reflections on the breathtaking views and the overall experience underline the essence of wing foiling – it’s not just about winning but also about the joy of being on the water and sharing moments with friends.

Aloha friends, Robert Stehlik with Blue Planet.
I'm here with my friends our O'ahu wing foiling crew.
We all went to Maui last weekend. 4 00:00:14,19.999 --> 00:00:15,520 We did like a long weekend.
Actually the weekend before that, we were already over there for the paddle and mula race. 6 00:00:20,639.999 --> 00:00:26,979.999 But today's video is going to be about the race from Maui to Molokai and then the Molokai Holokai race. 7 00:00:27,549.999 --> 00:00:32,679.999 So Derek got some good footage from on the water and then Kevin's here. 8 00:00:33,319.998 --> 00:00:37,529.998 For you, this was the first time you did this race Kevin? Yeah, so on Thursday morning, we went to the airport and jump on a plane, getting ready to fly to Maui to get ready. 15 00:01:10,949.997 --> 00:01:13,509.996 This footage right here is already on Maui. 16 00:01:14,109.997 --> 00:01:15,639.997 It wasn't looking too promising. 17 00:01:15,639.998 --> 00:01:23,589.997 The wind was light and stuff like that, but as soon as we started packing up, getting ready, there was a bunch of wind just starting to flow. 18 00:01:23,829.997 --> 00:01:26,249.997 The trees were moving, started looking great. 19 00:01:26,639.997 --> 00:01:27,549.997 Everybody was stoked. 20 00:01:27,579.997 --> 00:01:33,439.997 We had a crew, a great crew of all of us, Oahu and San Francisco wingers. 21 00:01:37,709.997 --> 00:01:43,709.997 Yeah, so first thing we did was head straight to Maliko and did a Maliko run on Thursday. 22 00:01:43,849.997 --> 00:01:47,159.997 After we had some nice breakfast, right? But yeah, I hear it. 72 00:06:30,874.802 --> 00:06:38,559.802 This guy was waving, right? Waving at people and nobody stopped for him and then you stop right there. 73 00:06:38,559.802 --> 00:06:39,389.802 Yeah, they got right there. 74 00:06:39,719.802 --> 00:06:40,159.802 Yeah. 75 00:06:41,929.802 --> 00:06:57,189.802 So yeah, the guy broke his paddle on this right at the start and all the wing feathers went past him, but Derek stopped and helped him out and got some help for him, right? So then I guess at that point, we were pretty far behind everyone else already. 76 00:06:57,209.802 --> 00:07:01,19.802 So you just took your time and filmed everyone, huh? Yeah. 77 00:07:01,19.802 --> 00:07:03,279.802 After that, I just changed the mindset. 78 00:07:05,614.802 --> 00:07:08,834.802 That's pilot John and me right here passing by. 79 00:07:08,834.802 --> 00:07:11,474.802 I was wondering why Derek come back to film us. 80 00:07:12,384.802 --> 00:07:18,874.801 Why then later we found out that he had to help one of the guys on the paddle that broke. 81 00:07:21,534.802 --> 00:07:21,744.802 Yeah. 82 00:07:21,744.802 --> 00:07:26,694.802 And also look like the official boat and right across your, the wake you are. 83 00:07:26,694.802 --> 00:07:27,34.8015 Yeah. 84 00:07:28,504.8015 --> 00:07:28,944.8015 Yeah. 85 00:07:28,994.8015 --> 00:07:29,384.8015 Yeah. 86 00:07:30,604.8015 --> 00:07:35,954.8025 At first I was mad that he went in my line, but I think that was like a good sign. 87 00:07:35,954.9025 --> 00:07:37,514.8025 If I wouldn't have. 88 00:07:38,14.8025 --> 00:07:38,794.8025 Stuck in that line. 89 00:07:38,794.8025 --> 00:07:42,724.8025 I wouldn't have seen a guy in the water waving, went by and I seen him waving. 90 00:07:42,724.8025 --> 00:07:50,359.8025 Then he was waving at the boats, actually, and the boats never stopped, and he started waving at the boilers and everybody just was kept going. 91 00:07:50,414.8025 --> 00:07:51,554.8025 And so I just came by. 92 00:07:51,554.8025 --> 00:07:55,784.8025 I was like, yo, you all right? Because the official boats already all were gone, right? Yeah, a bunch of the boats, jet skis, everybody just left. 94 00:08:12,289.803 --> 00:08:22,609.803 But I did see a boat all the way on the far corner on the Molokai side, and I ended up chasing them down, waving them down, and then got their attention. 95 00:08:22,609.803 --> 00:08:30,619.803 They followed me back to where the wars were sitting, and then from there I just took off and went back to the reefs. 96 00:08:31,59.802 --> 00:08:36,749.803 But, After that, it was just like, yeah, just have fun with it, get some photos of everybody. 97 00:08:37,369.803 --> 00:08:38,149.803 That's racing. 98 00:08:39,109.802 --> 00:08:40,709.703 Yeah, here's Nohia. 99 00:08:40,709.803 --> 00:08:45,629.802 Ready? Oh, they're just some of the paddlers, the canoe paddlers and the stand up people. 112 00:09:28,709.801 --> 00:09:31,619.901 Originally it started off with them. 113 00:09:32,49.901 --> 00:09:34,499.9 They were doing the race, the stand up and the canoes. 114 00:09:35,199.901 --> 00:09:41,869.901 So whenever I came upon one of those guys, I was like, Hey, let me film them because that's Oh, geez, let me just get their footage and whatnot. 115 00:09:41,969.901 --> 00:09:48,909.901 And they were stoked, just to see somebody else coming by, not just zooming by and then just getting their footage and whatnot. 116 00:09:49,129.901 --> 00:09:52,689.9 I shared this with a bunch of other people. 117 00:09:52,689.901 --> 00:09:57,329.901 So hopefully each paddler, each racer got, that got their footage. 118 00:09:57,934.901 --> 00:10:04,44.901 On and if they watch this blue planet video, yeah, they will be able to see themselves. 119 00:10:04,144.901 --> 00:10:05,674.901 I think this is Dirk right here. 120 00:10:06,314.901 --> 00:10:07,454.901 It was gelato Dirk. 121 00:10:08,34.901 --> 00:10:08,384.901 Oh, yeah. 122 00:10:08,874.9 --> 00:10:09,734.901 He did great too. 123 00:10:11,54.901 --> 00:10:11,404.901 Yeah. 124 00:10:13,324.901 --> 00:10:13,554.901 Yeah. 125 00:10:13,834.901 --> 00:10:21,979.901 Unfortunately, Rob was all the way in the front so I couldn't get his footage but yeah, it was just like gone, as soon as the thing started. 126 00:10:22,129.901 --> 00:10:24,319.901 Oh, it was so fast. 127 00:10:25,199.901 --> 00:10:25,859.901 So fast. 128 00:10:26,9.901 --> 00:10:41,844.901 And I think Matt would've been right up there with them, but, he was with Reza, so the other guy from San Francisco that he, his buddy that flew in and they went back and back, stayed together, make sure everybody got in safely, which is cool. 129 00:10:42,464.901 --> 00:10:42,614.901 Yeah. 130 00:10:42,974.901 --> 00:10:45,14.901 The unofficial SF team. 131 00:10:45,624.901 --> 00:10:46,404.901 Yeah, there you go. 132 00:10:47,84.901 --> 00:10:47,604.901 There you go. 133 00:10:48,534.901 --> 00:10:50,624.901 And I heard from them last time. 134 00:10:50,625.001 --> 00:10:50,835.001 Yeah. 135 00:10:51,385.001 --> 00:10:53,415.001 Towards the end I think this looked like. 136 00:10:55,285.001 --> 00:10:55,875.001 Sorry, go ahead. 137 00:10:57,365.002 --> 00:11:02,655.002 Yeah, getting closer and we ended up catching up with a bunch of the stand up spoilers. 138 00:11:03,535.002 --> 00:11:08,959.902 And just figured I'd get some shots of them, and enjoying a couple selfies too. 139 00:11:12,750.002 --> 00:11:19,750.002 Yeah, Derek, you're pretty amazing that you can design and race at the same time. 140 00:11:21,960.002 --> 00:11:26,130.002 Oh, yeah, just bust about. 141 00:11:26,140.002 --> 00:11:29,210 How was the race for you, Rob? In condition and your gear and all that. 142 00:11:29,220.001 --> 00:11:31,960.001 Was it pretty? Was spot on. 143 00:11:32,450.001 --> 00:11:50,780 Yeah, I mean my equipment worked out pretty well I was on this mike's lab 600 and I was wishing out of my 540 Which is a little bit faster a lot of the really fast guys like alan caduz and ken winner They were on the mike's lab 340. 144 00:11:50,800.001 --> 00:12:02,0.001 So they had like tiny foils and they were super fast just took off and wow Were pretty much gone pretty quickly But you know The bumps are really nice and I was stoked. 145 00:12:02,0.001 --> 00:12:04,890.001 I ended up actually finishing official fourth place. 146 00:12:04,950.001 --> 00:12:09,580.001 Because yeah, Justin Simmer and Ken Winner, they fell in towards the end.

(12:10):
And actually, yeah, Derek, you finished in sixth or seventh place. 148 00:12:14,269.999 --> 00:12:15,649.999 So shortly behind.
So you caught up with a lot of people, along the way.
And then Edo.
I think.
Yeah, what's up guys? Oh yeah, that's what's up guys.
They came in pretty quick too.
.9995It was a super battle. 155 00:12:30,579.9995 --> 00:12:33,909.999 It's like a, it's like an arms race with with the stand up guys.

(12:35):
It's super heated. 157 00:12:37,669.999 --> 00:12:38,29.999 Yeah.
.999And yeah after we, I finished and my feet were burning. 159 00:12:42,219.999 --> 00:12:49,189.999 So I found that the finished tent and stood in the shade and took some video of some of the other people finishing, which was cool to see. 160 00:12:50,209.999 --> 00:13:04,9.998 And here you can see like a harbor once you come around the corner there, the wind is pretty dead, so it goes from super windy to lighter wind and then pretty much a wind shadow right behind the work there. 161 00:13:04,699.999 --> 00:13:09,569.999 Made it pretty hard for the, especially the stand up foilers to finish on foil. 162 00:13:10,199.999 --> 00:13:20,819.898 And there's Army Armstrong, I think, yeah, so they had to, it was like a pump fest at the end if they could make it. 163 00:13:21,19.899 --> 00:13:25,129.799 And then a lot of the wing foilers couldn't wing all the way to the finish line. 164 00:13:25,779.799 --> 00:13:37,249.6985 Were you guys all able to wing all the way to the finish line? Yeah, I got lucky somehow I got to the boat ramp, which was, I think, unusual. 165 00:13:37,249.6985 --> 00:13:37,279.698 Yeah. 166 00:13:37,279.798 --> 00:13:37,299.599 Cool. 167 00:13:38,699.699 --> 00:13:41,929.699 Yeah, it was light. 168 00:13:42,9.699 --> 00:13:44,499.699 And then I got scheme and it was enough. 169 00:13:44,499.699 --> 00:13:48,949.699 Pick us right back up to get in and the finish line was way inside. 170 00:13:49,589.699 --> 00:13:55,139.699 So we got in there. 171 00:13:57,759.699 --> 00:13:58,619.699 Yeah, perfect. 172 00:13:58,619.699 --> 00:14:00,389.699 Yeah, on that finish. 173 00:14:00,469.699 --> 00:14:04,39.699 There's a massive containers blocking and then there's open spots in it. 174 00:14:04,484.7 --> 00:14:05,964.7 The building and stuff like that. 175 00:14:05,964.7 --> 00:14:08,634.7 So you really have to like you see the texture on the water. 176 00:14:08,634.7 --> 00:14:09,804.7 You really have to read that. 177 00:14:10,354.7 --> 00:14:15,204.6995 And when you see the texture, you accelerate and get yourself to that next spot. 178 00:14:15,204.6995 --> 00:14:17,164.699 See how it's glassy right in that area. 179 00:14:17,214.7 --> 00:14:19,924.7 So you get as much acceleration as you can. 180 00:14:19,924.7 --> 00:14:21,184.699 So you can glide through the glassiness. 181 00:14:22,759.7 --> 00:14:27,309.7 Until you see the next textured zone, then you can power up again and get through. 182 00:14:27,539.7 --> 00:14:39,579.699 Because if you didn't do that and you just made your way and dilly dally, you would definitely drop off oil and you'd be like these guys, lay down paddling, which kind of a bummer to finish the race that way. 183 00:14:39,579.7 --> 00:14:44,829.7 But yeah, you just got to just lean into it and just make use of it. 184 00:14:44,829.7 --> 00:14:51,284.5995 And then once you come to that flat zone and you just pump, and just make it, will your way through. 185 00:14:53,604.6995 --> 00:15:12,969.7 Yeah, and that was where for me, even though I had the bigger, slower, a little bit slower foil at the end that kind of paid off because I was able to, pump through the lulls and basically pass Ken Winner and Justin Simmer were quite a bit faster than me, but then at the end they had to basically paddle paddle in to the finish. 186 00:15:13,489.7 --> 00:15:18,759.699 So they lost precious minutes at the end and I was able to pass them just flying on my bigger foil, so that was good. 187 00:15:20,39.699 --> 00:15:20,789.699 Oh, right on. 188 00:15:20,789.699 --> 00:15:22,739.698 Yeah, strategy, right? It pays off. 189 00:15:23,9.698 --> 00:15:34,389.698 If it's steady all the way and it's machine like, then of course the smaller foils and the bigger hand wings will win, but if it's like variable, just like regular nature. 190 00:15:34,804.699 --> 00:15:36,84.699 And you got no control. 191 00:15:36,174.699 --> 00:15:44,254.699 It's like you go with a faster one to the middle of the channel or you go with something a little bit bigger so that in the beginning you can get up right away. 192 00:15:44,734.698 --> 00:15:47,894.699 And at the end you can finish strong, it's always a gamble. 193 00:15:56,249.699 --> 00:16:04,199.699 Matt, what size oils were you and ZA using? We were both on the mic slab 700. 194 00:16:04,779.699 --> 00:16:05,319.699 Yeah. 195 00:16:05,464.699 --> 00:16:08,544.699 I think we were both on seven hundreds. 196 00:16:08,544.699 --> 00:16:17,94.699 Like knowing what I know now, if I had to do it again, I'd probably go, I'd probably go 600 or see if I could have gotten a five 40 before the race. 197 00:16:17,94.699 --> 00:16:21,509.699 But yeah, definitely the big learning for me overall with all these races we did was. 198 00:16:22,464.699 --> 00:16:25,34.699 Bigger hand wing, smaller foil. 199 00:16:25,634.699 --> 00:16:27,744.699 Yeah, but the 700 was nice to have me. 200 00:16:27,744.699 --> 00:16:31,54.6985 It's super fun riding bumps, but that was wasn't the point of racing. 201 00:16:31,54.6985 --> 00:16:35,264.6975 It does go fast, but it takes a lot of effort to make, to really go fast. 202 00:16:35,424.6985 --> 00:16:39,584.6985 So yeah, the 600, the 540 B would have been the choice if I could do it over again. 203 00:16:40,104.6985 --> 00:16:43,384.6985 But yeah, learned a lot about equipment for next year. 204 00:16:44,9.6985 --> 00:17:01,475.7207222 Another thing, Matt what did you learn about the ground and the asphalt on Molokai? I was just going to say that, yeah, you want to say what my new nickname is or should I explain it first? Yeah, you can explain it, yeah. 205 00:17:02,335.7207222 --> 00:17:09,815.7207222 Probably the most important equipment fail that I had was not sailing with my flip flops or slippers in my backpack. 206 00:17:10,485.7207222 --> 00:17:21,35.7197222 So When we got to Molokai, it was super hot and I was running from like shady spot to shady spot until What did I do? I think I put him in your luggage and it went on the boat. 207 00:17:21,35.7207222 --> 00:17:21,625.5207222 Yeah. 208 00:17:22,205.6207222 --> 00:17:26,415.6207222 Yeah, that's probably my biggest equipment learning of the whole trip is travel with footwear. 209 00:17:27,125.6207222 --> 00:17:27,335.6207222 Yeah. 210 00:17:27,365.6207222 --> 00:17:28,665.6197222 That's how he got the nickname. 211 00:17:29,5.6197222 --> 00:17:32,175.6207222 His nickname now is Matt Hotfoot Tarini. 212 00:17:33,675.6207222 --> 00:17:34,845.5207222 Hotfeet Tarini. 213 00:17:35,545.6207222 --> 00:17:38,65.6207222 Yeah, I was calling it the fire walk. 214 00:17:38,105.6207222 --> 00:17:39,745.6207222 Basically walking on the asphalt there. 215 00:17:39,755.6207222 --> 00:17:43,635.6207222 I was like, yeah, I was trying to walk on the white lines on the, me too. 216 00:17:44,105.6207222 --> 00:17:45,105.6207222 Yeah, same. 217 00:17:46,465.6207222 --> 00:17:46,995.6207222 So hot. 218 00:17:47,465.6207222 --> 00:17:47,865.6207222 Crazy. 219 00:17:48,595.6207222 --> 00:17:49,305.6207222 Classic. 220 00:17:49,565.6197222 --> 00:17:51,135.6207222 But then you went back out, Derek. 221 00:17:52,900.6207222 --> 00:18:07,980.6187222 You got Eli's wing and wing back out or something and got some more footage?
