So with the attic space, people just don't understand that it's not a place to store things.
It's an important piece of the construction of the home, not just to keep the rain out.

It's there to allow your home to be more comfortable. And the better the ventilation
and the better the insulation.
The more money you'll save, and the more comfortable you'll be.
So why don't we get into this? Are you ready? Yes.
So you're an attic insulation expert as well as ventilation.

These two things are very important in the attic. Like I said,
a lot of people just don't understand it.

I'm very familiar with the attic space and there are important components,

but a lot of people don't get is, okay, so I've got my 16 or 17 inches of insulation and that's fine.
Well, wait a second. What about that attic stairway, which many people have,
or if it's not Not a stairway. Maybe it's just an entrance.
It doesn't matter what it is. It could just be a hole with plywood.
Whatever it is, that space is basically void of insulation.

But an attic stairway insulator is amazing.
It's like something NASA would use. As a matter of fact, I believe there's some
NASA technology involved in this, and it basically allows you to zip close your attic.
And even if the staircase was still down, it would still do its job.

It's an insulator that keeps out the hot air from going into the home and the
cool air from going into the attic. and you basically unzip it to get in the attic.
And then when you come down, you zip it back up and everything is sealed.
Not only that, Adam, you know this is true.

Like, who doesn't want to save money?

Now, you're not just going to save money on your electric bill.
You're going to save money on other things as we talk about the importance of ventilation.
So we're going to move a little bit from insulation, which we'll come back to,
and we are going to go to ventilation.
There's two types of ventilation, Adam, you know this.
(07:26):
There's passive and there's active. Most people have some type of passive ventilation
on their roof in their attic to move the hot air out,
but generally that's not sufficient here in Houston, especially in the summertime.
Can you explain as the attic expert the difference between what most people
(07:46):
have, which is passive, versus an active product, which we're going to talk about?
Yes. And it's absolutely right. The most homes are just depending on the,
just the natural flow of air.
And that is a slow process.
If you have some kind of mechanical draw, it's basically vacuuming out the attic air.
(08:07):
It's removing as fast as it's coming in and it's keeping your attic fresher.
It's keeping it, the air is, you know, just fresh all the time.
Helps your HVAC equipment work easier. there's
a lot of benefits and one of the biggest benefits that people don't understand is
it helps your roof last longer the the heat
of the attic if it's just sitting up against that the bottom underneath those
(08:29):
shingles it's destroying them so there's a lot of benefits to have an active
ventilation system for sure yeah and the active ventilation system that we're
going to talk about right now is really amazing and people may have heard of this before because
they're popping up on roofs all over Texas.

Can you talk a little bit about the humidistat and thermostat, Adam?
Yeah. Yeah. So the thermostat hangs about four feet from the fan into your attic.

So it's getting a very clear read, an accurate read because it's hanging in the middle of it.
And so whether the the temperature hits
82 i believe when it uh turns on
or humidity gets high it senses it
and pulled and turns it on and people think what do you mean pulls
in the cool air well if you're not drawing air

in your attic is going to hit 155 160 because it's just stale so if it's even
109 that they're expecting you know 100 degrees today that's still cooler than
150 so So it's drawing that fresh air in and keeping your inside temperature
the same as the outside. But it is very important.
So you've got this heat coming down on the roof from the sun, heating up the attic.
(10:52):
Like you said, Adam, could be 150 to 160 degrees in that attic space.
Outside, it might be 95, which is still hot.
It's better to have the 95-degree heat.
Or air in your attic than the 160.
And that's going to make a big difference in how your air conditioning system runs.

It's important to have 16, 17 inches for that R value.
Why is it so important to get up to snuff for R value?
You know, I like to explain this. If you think of, you know,
insulation as a heat sponge, it absorbs and absorbs and absorbs.
And if it's not enough, then pretty soon the heat is actually sitting on your

ceiling and now radiating into your house. So you want enough insulation that
by the heat of the day, it has not touched your ceiling yet and now it's reversing and backing off.
So the more sponge you have, the more water, the more heat it can hold.
So think of it that way. I think that's an easy way for people to get their mind around it.

And FYI, everybody, there is a maximum at some point.
So if you think, well, I'll just get 32 inches, diminishing returns. turns.
It won't necessarily hurt anything as long as the ventilation is still good
and you're not clogging up vents, but you don't have to spend the extra money

and have that extra insulation.
If you only have three, six, eight, 10 inches, you should be up to 16 or 17

In the end, it's really just over $1,000 now, $1,032 installed,
not the a fan, the fan and installed, the whole kit and caboodle,
$1,032 after the federal energy tax credit, 30% of $384.
That's just a fantastic deal. Now, the question you might have is,

do I need one fan or do I need two fans or more?
Well, this is where the free attic assessment comes in from Adam and his team.

So there's all these different things that most of my listeners don't understand

Let's talk a little bit about removal and why that might be necessary and why
an enzyme treatment would be also possibly required.

And that's a really great subject. A lot of people get the phone call,
hey, we need to have our insulation removed, and whatever reason they might
give, it's not necessarily true.
It's to your advantage if it's salvageable insulation, obviously.
And so we want to make sure it's healthy. Is it healthy? Meaning,
has it been invaded by raccoons?
Has it been? Did your roof get knocked out in a storm and now it's been flooding?
(34:41):
Those are a a couple reasons why it needs to be removed but most addicts
are healthy enough we treat it with
this enzyme it freshens it it deodorizes it
disinfects your attic and saves the three four or five inches you have and then
we add to it versus a full removal because if you remove the six now you've
got to replace that plus the amount that you need to get to that r38 so it saves
(35:07):
you money to keep your existing insulation,
make it healthy, and then add on top of it.
You know what it's like? It's like if you have maybe some water damage somewhere,
instead of pulling off sheetrock, you keep what you can, maybe patch it, and then you prime it.
And then you paint it way cheaper than taking all the sheetrock out,
right? Because sometimes you don't have to.
(35:27):
And, you know, a lot of people understand what that means when they've had a
couple of inches of water in their home from a flood.
You don't have to necessarily take the sheetrock from the floor to the ceiling
out, right? You just cut out what you have to. Same thing in the attic.
If you have some type of damage, whether it's water damage from your air conditioning
system or a water heater or just rain coming in and, you know,
maybe it's old damage and you never really did anything about the insulation.
(35:50):
The insulation may be matted down.
It may be mildewy in some instances. There may be rat feces up there.
As Adam says, you don't need to have it all removed necessarily.
In some instances, you may, and that may be what Adam recommends.
In many instances, Adam and his team take out what has to be taken out,
and then they treat it and add the new insulation.
(36:13):
And what's cool about the new insulation, Adam, is no one would ever know there's
old insulation below it generally.
Right. Because if you're adding,
let's say, six, nine inches to the old stuff, the old stuff's fine.
You're just covering it up. Once again, it's like patching a wall and painting
it. No one knows what sheetrock looks like when it's painted.
They call it a wall. They don't call that wallboard or sheetrock.
(36:35):
It's called a wall. But it's sheetrock until it's finished, right? So it's interesting.
It's the same type of thing with your attic space and your attic insulation.

So it's your problem once you start living in it. They don't pay your electric
bill. They don't replace your roof. They don't replace your air conditioning system.

understand, Adam, and I want to talk about this.
So with the attic space, people just don't understand that it's not a place to store things.
It's an important piece of the construction of the home, not just to keep the rain out.

It's there to allow your home to be more comfortable. And the better the ventilation
and the better the insulation.
The more money you'll save, and the more comfortable you'll be.
So why don't we get into this? Are you ready? Yes.
So you're an attic insulation expert as well as ventilation.
(01:51):
These two things are very important in the attic. Like I said,
a lot of people just don't understand it.

I've been talking about this on the radio for a very long time.
I'm very familiar with the attic space and there are important components,

but a lot of people don't get is, okay, so I've got my 16 or 17 inches of insulation and that's fine.
Well, wait a second. What about that attic stairway, which many people have,
or if it's not Not a stairway. Maybe it's just an entrance.
It doesn't matter what it is. It could just be a hole with plywood.
Whatever it is, that space is basically void of insulation.
(04:29):
But an attic stairway insulator is amazing.
It's like something NASA would use. As a matter of fact, I believe there's some
NASA technology involved in this, and it basically allows you to zip close your attic.
And even if the staircase was still down, it would still do its job.
(04:49):
It's an insulator that keeps out the hot air from going into the home and the
cool air from going into the attic. and you basically unzip it to get in the attic.
And then when you come down, you zip it back up and everything is sealed.
Not only that, Adam, you know this is true.
It helps keep dust, dirt, and the mice and the rats from coming through that door.
(05:14):
Yes, critters, spiders, all that stuff. Keeps it up where it belongs.

Now, you're not just going to save money on your electric bill.
You're going to save money on other things as we talk about the importance of ventilation.
So we're going to move a little bit from insulation, which we'll come back to,
and we are going to go to ventilation.
There's two types of ventilation, Adam, you know this.
(07:26):
There's passive and there's active. Most people have some type of passive ventilation
on their roof in their attic to move the hot air out,
but generally that's not sufficient here in Houston, especially in the summertime.
Can you explain as the attic expert the difference between what most people
(07:46):
have, which is passive, versus an active product, which we're going to talk about?
Yes. And it's absolutely right. The most homes are just depending on the,
just the natural flow of air.
And that is a slow process.
If you have some kind of mechanical draw, it's basically vacuuming out the attic air.
(08:07):
It's removing as fast as it's coming in and it's keeping your attic fresher.
It's keeping it, the air is, you know, just fresh all the time.
Helps your HVAC equipment work easier. there's
a lot of benefits and one of the biggest benefits that people don't understand is
it helps your roof last longer the the heat
of the attic if it's just sitting up against that the bottom underneath those
(08:29):
shingles it's destroying them so there's a lot of benefits to have an active
ventilation system for sure yeah and the active ventilation system that we're
going to talk about right now is really amazing and people may have heard of this before because
they're popping up on roofs all over Texas.
And this is your chance to get in on something that you should have for your hot attic.

Pulling hot air out of my attic and drawing in the cool ambient air from outside

Can you talk a little bit about the humidistat and thermostat, Adam?
Yeah. Yeah. So the thermostat hangs about four feet from the fan into your attic.

So it's getting a very clear read, an accurate read because it's hanging in the middle of it.
And so whether the the temperature hits
82 i believe when it uh turns on
or humidity gets high it senses it
and pulled and turns it on and people think what do you mean pulls
in the cool air well if you're not drawing air
(10:27):
in your attic is going to hit 155 160 because it's just stale so if it's even
109 that they're expecting you know 100 degrees today that's still cooler than
150 so So it's drawing that fresh air in and keeping your inside temperature
the same as the outside. But it is very important.
So you've got this heat coming down on the roof from the sun, heating up the attic.
(10:52):
Like you said, Adam, could be 150 to 160 degrees in that attic space.
Outside, it might be 95, which is still hot.
It's better to have the 95-degree heat.
Or air in your attic than the 160.
And that's going to make a big difference in how your air conditioning system runs.
(11:13):

It's important to have 16, 17 inches for that R value.
Why is it so important to get up to snuff for R value?
You know, I like to explain this. If you think of, you know,
insulation as a heat sponge, it absorbs and absorbs and absorbs.
And if it's not enough, then pretty soon the heat is actually sitting on your

ceiling and now radiating into your house. So you want enough insulation that
by the heat of the day, it has not touched your ceiling yet and now it's reversing and backing off.
So the more sponge you have, the more water, the more heat it can hold.
So think of it that way. I think that's an easy way for people to get their mind around it.

And FYI, everybody, there is a maximum at some point.
So if you think, well, I'll just get 32 inches, diminishing returns. turns.
It won't necessarily hurt anything as long as the ventilation is still good
and you're not clogging up vents, but you don't have to spend the extra money
(17:59):
and have that extra insulation.
If you only have three, six, eight, 10 inches, you should be up to 16 or 17
and Adam and his team can top that off. And here's the offer on that.

The benefit is huge. It's way better than the static fans.

up squeaking and making all kinds of noise.
And then during the winter, a lot of times people will put black plastic bags
over it so it doesn't draw air out in the winter.
So having a solar attic fan that's thermostatically controlled deals with both
seasons, all seasons, and if it isn't needed, it's not working.

But when it works, it works wonders.
I have the exact same fan in my attic, and I've had it for some time.

Does it need more ventilation? Does it need the draft master,
which is the attic stairway insulator?

Does some of the insulation need to be removed possibly and then more added?
And then does it need enzyme treatment, which is called attic fresh?
So there's all these different things that most of my listeners don't understand
and haven't heard of, Adam, but you're going to come out free because I asked

Let's talk a little bit about removal and why that might be necessary and why
an enzyme treatment would be also possibly required.

And that's a really great subject. A lot of people get the phone call,
hey, we need to have our insulation removed, and whatever reason they might
give, it's not necessarily true.
It's to your advantage if it's salvageable insulation, obviously.
And so we want to make sure it's healthy. Is it healthy? Meaning,
has it been invaded by raccoons?
Has it been? Did your roof get knocked out in a storm and now it's been flooding?
(34:41):
Those are a a couple reasons why it needs to be removed but most addicts
are healthy enough we treat it with
this enzyme it freshens it it deodorizes it
disinfects your attic and saves the three four or five inches you have and then
we add to it versus a full removal because if you remove the six now you've
got to replace that plus the amount that you need to get to that r38 so it saves
(35:07):
you money to keep your existing insulation,
make it healthy, and then add on top of it.
You know what it's like? It's like if you have maybe some water damage somewhere,
instead of pulling off sheetrock, you keep what you can, maybe patch it, and then you prime it.
And then you paint it way cheaper than taking all the sheetrock out,
right? Because sometimes you don't have to.
(35:27):
And, you know, a lot of people understand what that means when they've had a
couple of inches of water in their home from a flood.
You don't have to necessarily take the sheetrock from the floor to the ceiling
out, right? You just cut out what you have to. Same thing in the attic.
If you have some type of damage, whether it's water damage from your air conditioning
system or a water heater or just rain coming in and, you know,
maybe it's old damage and you never really did anything about the insulation.
(35:50):
The insulation may be matted down.
It may be mildewy in some instances. There may be rat feces up there.
As Adam says, you don't need to have it all removed necessarily.
In some instances, you may, and that may be what Adam recommends.
In many instances, Adam and his team take out what has to be taken out,
and then they treat it and add the new insulation.
(36:13):
And what's cool about the new insulation, Adam, is no one would ever know there's
old insulation below it generally.
Right. Because if you're adding,
let's say, six, nine inches to the old stuff, the old stuff's fine.
You're just covering it up. Once again, it's like patching a wall and painting
it. No one knows what sheetrock looks like when it's painted.
They call it a wall. They don't call that wallboard or sheetrock.
(36:35):
It's called a wall. But it's sheetrock until it's finished, right? So it's interesting.
It's the same type of thing with your attic space and your attic insulation.

And the way the fan works is it's drawing in from your soffit vents or other

you want the 92 degrees to be coming in.
And that 92 may end up being 100 or 105, but it's way better than being 150.
And that's why you want a solar attic fan. You don't have to plug it into your electricity.
It's not going to cost you any money to run it. It's run by the sun.
We have so many sunny days here in Houston, Texas. It's going to run every day
(43:46):
and is controlled by the humidistat and the thermostat.
I call it a smart fan. It's smart. It knows when to come on and when to come
off. So the fan doesn't run at night, does it?
No. And in fact, you want it to turn off in the evening. And people ask,
why? Should we let the cooler air?
Well, it brings in the moistness of the outside air.
(44:07):
So you end up getting the dew of the night and that creates mold,
that creates other issues in your attic.
So you want that to not be drawing in the outside air once the sun goes down.
Yeah, it's really a perfect invention.
It does what it needs to do during the day, and at night it shuts off.
And by the way, you won't be able to hear it. It is whisper quiet, lifetime warranty.

And today, the federal government is giving you a big deal on this.
They're going to pay 30% of this fan and the installation, not just the product,
but the installation of the product.

So it's your problem once you start living in it. They don't pay your electric
bill. They don't replace your roof. They don't replace your air conditioning system.
