how to have to clean your shower doors less, how you're going to have better

The Jacksonville, St. Augustine market has some of the hardest water in the area.
We have the average grain of hardness per gallon in the Jacksonville,
St. Augustine market is up to 20 grains of hardness.

What does that mean? Just to put that in perspective, anything over six grains,
those are the minerals inside the water that come from the earth.
So anything over nine grains is considered extremely hard.

So when you go into a house, Tom, and you turn on that tap in the kitchen or
the bathroom, in the laundry room,

10, 12 years, and it's had hard water in the home, there's a sediment.
And what happens is when the water heater heats up, this isn't always dangerous,
but you want to have this looked at, by the way.
So when the water heats up in your water heater, it starts to rumble,
(17:01):
literally can shake your house.
That's right. Yeah. Because in the bottom of it, it's got two elements in it.
And the bottom element of the water heater typically ends up being submerged in scale and minerals.
So therefore, that also reduces the efficiency of the water heater.
It takes much longer to actually heat the water up.
So when you find yourself running out of hot water.
(17:23):
Those are the things that is causing it. Hard water causes all kinds of damage
to your appliances in the home, the hot water heater, and it could even possibly
void the warranty on the water heater, especially tankless water heaters because they don't have a tank.
So then the hardness actually scales up and jams up the flow of water through
that tankless water heater.

I've heard some people say, hey, Joe, why do I have to replace my dishwasher
every three to five years? I'm like, you shouldn't. You should buy a quality
dishwasher and put quality water through it.
If you're putting hard water into your dishwasher, number one,
your dishwasher isn't going to last as long.
And number two, you're going to get etching on your glasses.

It's not good for your dishes.
Things come out spotty and you don't necessarily need to buy these after product

detergent to get rid of spots.

Yeah, let's fix the real problem, right? We use all these different solutions
and soaps and lotions and all these things we apply to our body and things that
we apply to our appliances in order to be a Band-Aid on top of the real problem.
The real problem that any plumbing call that I get into my building,

They've processed it. Now, in all fairness, they need to because if they don't
put chlorine in there, for instance, then it's possible there could be some
outbreak of some bug and people get sick.
So they dump all this stuff in there so everyone can kind of have a fair shot.
(31:43):
But for those of us who don't want that in our bodies, those chemicals in our
bodies, when it comes in our house, we have to filter them out because we don't want to be the filter.
That's right. And because with that water softer includes the carbon filtration
and the carbon filtration is going to remove any man-made impurities.
It's going to remove the chlorine, the chloramine, which basically has ammonia
(32:07):
in it. And they use that, like you said, to disinfect the water.
When you do that, then it leaves a byproduct, right, which could be trihalomethane
or something like that, which is, according to the EPA, is carcinogenic.
Yeah, and we keep hearing about these things.

And what happens is when the water heater heats up, this isn't always dangerous,
but you want to have this looked at, by the way.
So when the water heats up in your water heater, it starts to rumble,
(17:01):
literally can shake your house.
That's right. Yeah. Because in the bottom of it, it's got two elements in it.
And the bottom element of the water heater typically ends up being submerged in scale and minerals.
So therefore, that also reduces the efficiency of the water heater.
It takes much longer to actually heat the water up.
So when you find yourself running out of hot water.
(17:23):
Those are the things that is causing it. Hard water causes all kinds of damage
to your appliances in the home, the hot water heater, and it could even possibly
void the warranty on the water heater, especially tankless water heaters because they don't have a tank.
So then the hardness actually scales up and jams up the flow of water through
that tankless water heater.

I've heard some people say, hey, Joe, why do I have to replace my dishwasher
every three to five years? I'm like, you shouldn't. You should buy a quality
dishwasher and put quality water through it.
If you're putting hard water into your dishwasher, number one,

But for those of us who don't want that in our bodies, those chemicals in our
bodies, when it comes in our house, we have to filter them out because we don't want to be the filter.
That's right. And because with that water softer includes the carbon filtration
and the carbon filtration is going to remove any man-made impurities.
It's going to remove the chlorine, the chloramine, which basically has ammonia
(32:07):
in it. And they use that, like you said, to disinfect the water.
When you do that, then it leaves a byproduct, right, which could be trihalomethane
or something like that, which is, according to the EPA, is carcinogenic.
Yeah, and we keep hearing about these things.
Tom, did you know that today the rate of cancer in Americans is shooting through the roof?

If you look back in time, even though the records weren't as good a couple hundred
years ago, a hundred years ago, people didn't get a lot of these what they call
diseases as we're getting today.
We're getting it from everything, including our water, right? There's air pollution.
I believe that there's some food pollution. Some of the ultra-processed foods
we eat really aren't as good as the natural foods.

Now, the hardness is really bad for your home. It's bad for your water heater.
It's bad for your pipes. It's bad for your dishwasher, your washing machine,

It's not really good for you, but I'll tell you what's really not good for you.
That tap water you're taking in. If you're ingesting the tap water in your home,
whether it's well water or city water, it's not good. And, you know,

We can replace the water heater. Going to cost you some money.
(43:34):
But, hey, we can't replace our body. it. We only got one of them.
So let's drink pure water. Let's purify it ourselves in our home.

be confused. Well, wait a second. If the whole house has filtration system,
why do I need to filter it at the sink?
And let me start off and then you can fill in some blanks here because I have this in my home.
So I've got at the water softener with a built-in carbon filter.
So that means every drop of water coming into my home is filtered through the carbon filter.

The carbon filter is similar to what you might have in your refrigerator.
So if you're good and you replace the carbon filter in your fridge,
that is the exact same thing that Tom's going to put in for your whole house.
So it's not just your fridge, it's everything. But it doesn't take out all the
impurities, something that could It could make you sick, for instance.
(45:25):
That's what an RO system does, reverse osmosis. So if you're going to drink
it, it's the reverse osmosis at your sink.
Okay, that's easy to control. But everything else coming in is filtered at a
high level with the carbon filter. How did I do, Tom?
Yeah, that's it. You got it. So, you know, we got the first stage,
which is the carbon filter, which is going to remove any man-made impurities

and any disinfecting byproducts that are left over, right, from those chlorine and chloramine.
And then we're going to soften the water and get it below six grains of hardness.
And so we remove all those, you know, different things and minerals that are
in the water and left behind.
And then we're going to put in that reverse osmosis, which is going to give

you purified water that you can actually drink that doesn't have any plastic in it.
Yeah. People have asked me before, can I connect a reverse osmosis water drinking
system to my refrigerator?
And the answer is probably, but you don't need to do that. All right.

The The whole house water coming in is going to be filtered by the whole house filtration system.
Right. So just like those, you know, but the thing about you said about the
refrigerator has a carbon filter.
It doesn't soften the water. So we still we still are not protecting our refrigerator
itself and the ice maker from all those, you know, minerals that are left behind by hard water.
(46:53):
So it does have a carbon filter that takes out the chlorine,
but it still leaves all those impurities. these. But the big thing is it leaves
all that hardness and all that
scale buildup in the minerals that are left behind after the water leaves.
Yeah, it's really misleading because
when you get water or ice out of your refrigerator, it might smell okay.
It might not have that smell of chlorine, but it hasn't been softened and it
(47:17):
hasn't gone through an RO system.
So you can drink the water out of a carbon filter, but it's not going to protect
you as much as a reverse osmosis. Hopefully people understand that.
And if you don't quite understand, you can always go to Google and Google this stuff.
It's all out there. It just makes sense.
