Shafer is your name. Can you tell us a story about the family business?
Yeah, absolutely. There's a lot there to unpack. I'll try to do the short version.

So we started back in 1985.
Yeah, I'm a third generation. I've grown up in this business my entire life.
My grandpa and my dad started the company.
And when they got started, I mean, we really literally started with one rusty
old pickup truck and one toolbox.
And they said, let's get into HVAC. As a matter of fact, it was called Shafer
Mobile Home Service in the very beginning.

And we did everything from plumbing and electrical and we rebuilt houses and
this, that, and the other.
Fast forward several years into the 90s, late 90s, decided, hey,
let's just focus on the one area that we're really good at, that we enjoy the
most, that we feel we add the most value for our clients.
And that was heating and air conditioning. We changed the name from Shafer
Mobile Home Service to Shafer for heating and cooling, and really started

focusing on all types of residential housing, specifically getting into high-efficient
equipment, into air quality products.
Fast forward a few more years, you know, into geothermal.
Systems and just different ways that we can really add the most value to our
clients as well as to our team members and just be able to give the most.

And so fast forward a few more years, like I said, I've grown up in the company my entire life.
I've worked in every position and grew up from a very young age holding the
flashlight and getting tools to learning installation and service,
sales, worked in customer service, marketing, you name it.
And then over the past five years, I've really pulled myself out of the field.
I miss that part of it, being able to work one-on-one, face-to-face in the client's home with them.

However, I've really enjoyed the new challenges and the new opportunities that
came along with what I focus on now, and that's working on the business.
And so building a phenomenal team that is able to go out there and serve more
clients with that wow client experience that we like to offer each and every time.
And so I've worked the last five years on that. We have an awesome,
phenomenal team here. We have over 30 team members service a big area and go

out and really provide that five-star service over and over.
So, yeah, that's kind of where we're at now.
And, you know, we're still pushing forward, still growing, and enjoy what we
do here every day. It's truly a blessing and a great time.
You've done a great job. I know your entire family is very proud of what you've
done with the family business.

I love the fact that you work with your team to make it a great working environment
because it's very important for our listeners to understand that.
Because if you have a great team who is behind phenomenal customer service,
your customer is served better.

(03:35):
And a lot of people don't get that. They want the best pricing.
They want everything, but they don't care about the investment on the company side.
We should always take care of our suppliers. You're a supplier,
right, of services in HVAC, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
I bring this up because a lot of people just want the lowest price.

(03:57):
Some don't care if you're in business tomorrow. That's wrong.
They should care that you're in business tomorrow because when you come out
today, they're going to need you later for either a warranty or something else that you provide.
Absolutely. For me now, my focus really is on my team.
If I focus on my team and I take really good care of them and I create a business

(04:20):
that does that, that's a vehicle for them to get where they want to go in life
and they enjoy what they do, and we have the philosophies and the core values and things in place,
well, then that means that they're going to be able to go out and deliver that
phenomenal service to the client day in and day out.
Because if it's just, what I learned early on is we're used to wear all the
different hats in the business.
If it's just me, I can only do so much. I'm one person or me and my parents,

(04:43):
rather my family or two or three people.
But if I can instill that in a team of awesome people, you know,
a lot of people talk about how they can't find good help or they don't enjoy
their job or this, that, and the other.
You know, that's not like that for us here, man. We have a team of,
I truly believe, but the best people going out and providing the best service
day in and day out. Now we're not perfect.
We are still human, but we stand behind what we do. and we do mess up,

(05:06):
we're right there to stay in the house, which is why we have the guarantees that we have.
And you talked about a short-term company versus a long-term company.
That makes me think of our core philosophy and what that means to us.
And our core philosophy is a win, win, win, meaning that in all situations,
at all times, the solution that we come up with, all three must win.
And those three are the client, the team member, and the company.

(05:28):
And to me, really, what that equals is long-term success.
Because if all three of those don't win every time, well, heck,
if the client doesn't win, they're going to be stuck finding and searching for
another service provider to be able to take care of them when they need it most, right?
To keep their family comfortable and healthy and safe.
Well, if the team member doesn't win, well, they're going to be out looking
for a job and they can't provide for their family.

(05:49):
And if the company doesn't win, well, it's not going to be there to serve either one.
And so, yeah, 100%, Jim, I totally agree. And that's really what we've been really focused on.
I mean, I think that's what's helped us a lot over these past years.

With a tune-up, a lot of companies come in and they do a basic tune-up in the

heating mode or cooling mode. It's common this time of year.
As we go into entering the fall season, we prepare and get ready for winter

splits and relative humidity and refrigerant leaks. We're doing basic cleanings
on the indoor coil and the outdoor coil throughout the system,
you know, inside and out cleaning it.
So, I mean, it's a real in-depth, true rejuvenation on that system to keep that
system at factory fresh, operating correctly and efficiently,

which is obviously going to prevent breakdowns as well as keep that system running
more efficiently and help save on those utility costs and as well prolong the life of the equipment.
And so that's what that rejuvenation is. is now typically that's
189 per system you know and that's a
pretty common but that's a good price that's a
great price by the way yeah very competitive yeah so but with this hey you pay

Oh man, peace of mind and comfort and safety and lack of, you know,
breakdowns. You got utility savings, you have prolonged life on your equipment.

That's pretty old now, isn't it? It is, yeah.
I mean, if you look at, you know, study shows, if you look at consumer reports
and different things, I mean, the average lifespan, you know,
for us around here in this part of the country, you know, is around 12 years.
Now, there are systems that last way longer. You know, I've seen systems 40
years old and still running. I've seen systems, you know, two years old and getting replaced.

(30:43):
And so, you know, every one of me, too, but it all goes into how you take care of them.
Are they properly sized and designed and installed, et cetera?
But the average, right, they say is around 12 years.
And it gets to that point to where just, hey, it makes more sense to put that
harder money in replacing it versus continuing to repair it.
Now, yeah, you look at a system that's, yeah, 12, 15 years old.
There's a huge difference in the technology. I mean, heck, look at our vehicles.

(31:06):
Look at 15 years ago compared to now. Look at our cell phones 15 years ago compared to now.
You know, everything is, your heating and cooling system is no different than
everything else around us. It's constantly ever-changing.
As a matter of fact, there's some more big changes is coming,
you know, at the beginning of 2025 and here in a few short months.
And that's, you know, unfortunately, you know, for the industry,

(31:29):
for consumers, as we look at replacing equipment stuff, you know,
as an industry as a whole, the prices are about to go up again.
Inflation is just at an all-time high, right, as they roll out these new government-made changes.
There's really no better time than now if you're even on the fence or considering
a replacement in the near future.
I would honestly, if I would say, if you're thinking about within the next five

(31:51):
years, I may need to replace my system.
It might make sense just to go ahead and look at it now. It doesn't mean that
you have to make that decision to do it now, but at least let's get those options.
And that way you can make, you know, a good educated decision is for you,
your wants, your needs, your budget.
Hey, is now the right time? Or does it make sense to wait a year,
two years, five years down the road?
And maybe I just need to maintain this system and keep it running as long as

(32:13):
