The Genuine Place to Worship God & Its Frustrations • The Way of the Church (3)

How can we worship and serve God today as He desires? We must, first of all, be in the unique New Testament fellowship God has called us into as the believers in Christ, namely, “the fellowship of His Son”: God is faithful, through whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. — 1 Corinthians 1:9; cf. 1 Corinthians 1:2, 9, Revelation 1:11 While the New Testament gives us the teachings in this regard, the pictures we have in the Old Testament, which were provided to us for our instruction as the believers in Christ, “unto whom the ends of the ages have come” (1 Cor. 10:11; cf. v. 6, Rom. 15:4), give us a much richer understanding regarding the proper place for worshiping God. And what we see in the Old Testament is that God, through Moses, commanded the Children of Israel to first destroy all the heathen places of worship in the Good Land, and then come to the unique place God would choose for them to worship Him, namely, Jerusalem. Only there they could offer their burnt offerings, sacrifices, and tithes in a genuine way and rejoice before the Lord (Deut. 12:1-14). In any other place, even if they were to offer the very same offerings, it would not be acceptable to Him. And so, if we apply this picture to our situation today, we see how it shows us we must not choose our own “place” to worship God. Rather, we must reject any false ground of gathering with our fellow believers and come instead to the unique ground He has chosen for the saints to worship and serve Him.
