In this rushed, raw and honest interview, James O'Keefe opens up about the personal cost of being an investigative journalist. From FBI raids to lawsuits to being ousted from the very company he founded โ€” James reveals how he still finds hope, purpose, and the will to keep pushing forward.
We were told we only had 1 minute to conduct this interview, but we stretched it to 3 minutes... Sorry if it seemed rushed. Hopefully we can get James back on when we have more time.ย
If you're passionate about truth, journalism, or simply want to understand what happens behind the scenes of real storytelling, this oneโ€™s for you.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay, one question for you get it. You've been put
in crazy situations because of what you do. Did you
grow up with thick skin not being afraid to throw in?
Is this something that was learned over time to where
at this point in your career you're just used to
this now.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
I don't know where I got it from. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Partially the seeing the best in people and the integrity,
probably from my dad, but my creativity perhaps from my mom.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm not sure, though. I think it comes from God.
It comes from somewhere, but.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
I think when you are when you're an artist and
you believe in a cause or you're passionate about For me,
it's storytelling. I'm passion about getting the story, and you're
so passionate about that part of the process, you don't
really think about the secondary effects, the things that will
happen to you because you're not focused on that. You're
focused on a part of the process, which is telling

(00:52):
the story, getting the story, making the film, making the video,
and you're excited about that and you're not really thinking
about it.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
So I don't view it through a political lens. I
do it through more a cinematic lens.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
So you put yourself in crazy situations like we just
talked about. Do you have frustrations with journalists that just
try to spin a story a certain way? Because when
I've watched your stuff, you try to get to the facts,
that fact, you try to show us exactly what's going on.
Why aren't more journalists doing that? Because I feel you're
doing you're doing well because it's hard.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
No, because it's because noel I was fired from the
company I found it. So that's that's the definition of unwell. Yes, right,
I mean I was rated by the FBI, I was
arrested by the FBI. I was sued forty times. So
I mean that is you could say that that's not well, sir, so,
but I get your point. You have to just it's
like the more successful I am and what I do,
the worst it gets for me. But then again, you

(01:45):
have people that surround you and support you and encourage
you and fund your legal bills. So you're kind of
and I think most people like to sit behind a
sit in the room and blog and podcast and and
you have to go out in the field.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
And if there's a lot of money in.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
It, So what's next. Do you have a story that
you're working on that you're really excited that you haven't
really shared yet, or do you have anything that you're
coming up. You're excited to take a trip, and you
excited new project.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
I'm really excited about Generally, I think the culture is
shifting and I feel hope. I feel like I've been
in battled most of my life and I've been the
underdog and targeted. But I feel like we have this
nine month period of time where people can step forward
and actually not be fired and not be rated.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
I'm excited about that.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
One last question, I know you got to go two minutes. Okay,
all right. I have a lot of young people that
watch me, eighteen to twenty five that are all looking
to get in different things. What would you say to
a young person looking to get into journalism, storytelling?

Speaker 2 (02:41):
I would just go do it, Like, just do it.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Just just go out there and mess around and you know,
watch people and inspire you. And you know, when I
was in college and I was shaken and scared and
I had to flip a switch, I had to will
myself to do it.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
It was not comfortable, yeah, but I knew it was
the right thing to do. So it's like it's not comfortable.
I don't like it.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
I don't I'm not a psychopath, but I forced myself
by willing myself to take the first step.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Cool Jane, appreciate the time you hear Stack. Thanks guys, appreciate
you man,

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
