Do you really need a detailed business plan to succeed? After 20 years in business, building multiple six-figure ventures (and even selling one), I’ve discovered a simple framework that works, without a bulky 40-page plan.

In this episode, I walk you through my Goal-Focus-Pricing framework, a one-page (or even postage-stamp-sized) business plan that helps entrepreneurs set clear revenue targets and reverse-engineer a successful business model.

How to Start a Scalable Business

So, how do you create a business that doesn’t just work, but actually grows with you, without chaining you to your desk forever? Here’s what matters:

  • Start with a Clear, Measurable Goal: What does success look like in 12 months? Be specific; don’t just say “more revenue." Pick a number that excites you.
  • Solve a Real Problem, for More Than One Person: Find a need that exists not just for a handful of people, but for an entire group, industry, or niche. Scalability comes from building solutions with mass appeal, think what Dropbox did for cloud storage or what Calendly did for scheduling headaches.
  • Design for Simplicity and Replicability: Complex processes are growth killers. Whether it’s your service, your tech, or your offer, ask yourself: "Could someone else step in and deliver this without me?"
  • Leverage Tech and Automation: Automate repetitive tasks and embrace platforms like Zapier, Mailchimp, or Stripe so your business can run (and grow) even when you're out walking your dog.
  • Create Repeatable Systems: Document what works. Your onboarding, sales calls, email follow-ups, systematise now so you can delegate later.
  • Focus on Customer Acquisition Channels That Scale: Relying on word-of-mouth is lovely, but to grow, tap into scalable marketing: paid ads, content marketing, SEO, or partnerships.

Remember, scalability isn’t about doing everything at once, it’s about making wise choices that let you serve more people with the same (or even less) effort.
