Today’s get is one of the most profound keynote speakers on strategic communication and leadership that has delivered over 1,000 keynotes in 33 countries. Ryan Avery is the Keynote Speaker. Ryan is also an Emmy-award-winning journalist and author of two best-selling books, Speaker, Leader, Champion and Motivating Millennials. Ryan shares the difference between a leader and the leader, what the two types of leadership are, and the difference between managing and motivating your team.

Takeaways:

  • You need to know what your definition of leadership is. For example, Ryan’s definition of a leader is anyone that influences someone. You don't have to wait to get a title or position to become a leader, everyone can be a leader and influence others.
  • There are two styles of leadership, the first is Command & Control which is an outdated model with poor results. The second is Direct and Drive, which means that leaders point people in the right direction and make sure the machine is driving in that direction.
  • Through Direct and Drive leadership, people are excited to follow the leader’s energy and it’s much easier to motivate people than with Command and Control.
  • There is a difference between being a leader and being the leader. A leader manages people, whereas the leader motivates people. People don’t come to work wanting to be managed, they want to be motivated. Leaders need to know what motivates people.
  • It’s important for leaders to understand that what motivated someone yesterday with motivate them today. People have so much going on in their lives every day that their motivations change and leaders need to recognize that.
  • The best way to discover what will motivate someone on your team is to ask them. You don’t have the know the answer, you have to find the answer and the best way to do that is to go to the source and ask.
  • Resting and relaxing are crucial components of being able to recharge your capacity for work. Not everyone relaxes the same way and relaxation doesn’t need to be a week without cell reception. Find what types of rest work for you.

Quote of the Show:

  • “If you are influencing someone, you are in leadership” - Ryan Avery
