Starting college is an exciting milestone—especially for first-generation students navigating the journey with limited guidance. If you’ve just been accepted into a community college, congratulations! But now you may be wondering, what’s next?

Step 1: Get Your Student ID

Your college journey officially begins once you receive your student ID. This unique identifier gives you access to critical resources and systems—so make sure to keep it handy.

Step 2: Attend Orientation and Meet With Your Counselor

The first key milestone after getting your ID is attending college orientation. Orientation helps you understand campus resources, academic expectations, and student services.

Next, you’ll meet with your college counselor. This meeting is essential—it’s where you’ll discuss which classes to take and begin planning your academic path for the upcoming semester. Your counselor will help guide you toward fulfilling general education, major, and transfer requirements.

Step 3: Know Your Enrollment Date

After meeting with your counselor, your college will assign you an enrollment date and time. This is when you’re allowed to begin registering for your classes. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar!

Leading up to enrollment, review the class schedule. You’ll want to browse:

- Class times

- Days of the week

- Professors

- Course availability

Once you’ve selected the classes that best fit your needs and schedule, you’ll be ready to enroll—as long as they’re not already full.

Step 4: Get Comfortable With the Enrollment System

On your enrollment date, you’ll need to log into your college’s enrollment website to officially register for your courses. It’s crucial to get familiar with this software in advance so you can avoid tech issues that might prevent you from enrolling in the right classes.

Tip: Run a test login, browse the platform, and locate where and how to enroll before your official enrollment day arrives.

Step 5: Regularly Check Your Account for Fees

Once enrolled, continue monitoring your student account every two to three weeks. Why? Because colleges may drop students from classes due to outstanding fees—even small ones.

Avoid surprises by checking your balance and making sure your registration is secure. Staying proactive helps protect your schedule and academic progress.
