At a university campus event meant to ignite conservative youth, a single gunshot shattered the illusion of security. Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA and a high-octane ally of Donald Trump, was pushing his “Prove Me Wrong” debate tour at Utah Valley University—or as he’d pitch it, the start of his “American Comeback Tour.” Mid-debate, while answering a question about mass shootings, he crumpled—hit in the neck by a sniper's bullet fired from a rooftop around 200 yards away
Amid chaos, witnesses described blood pooling and panicked students scattering. Nearby buildings were canvassed. A person of interest was taken into custody—or at least briefly believed to be—but authorities later clarified that the actual shooter remained at large.
The governor of Utah labeled it a “political assassination,” and bipartisan outrage followed—Trump, Harris, Vance, Harris, Obama—all of them condemning the violence and mourning the loss of a figure so polarizing that nobody could ignore him.
Kirk died at the hospital hours later, survived by his wife, Erika, and their two young children.
