Hello and welcome to episode 7 in this 5th Season of Theatrical.
Our play for today is entitled "And I Ate a Pear" (https://newplayexchange.org/script/3195986/and-i-ate-a-pear) and is written by Beth Harpaz (https://newplayexchange.org/users/76579/beth-harpaz).
Beth recently quit her job to pursue playwriting after decades as a journalist for The Associated Press and other U.S. news outlets. She's currently looking for a home for a three-act play called "Under the Great Wave," about New Yorkers getting through the pandemic. "And I Ate a Pear" won best script, best actor and best director at the John DeSotelle Actors Studio NuWorks Festival in New York City 2024. The play was also produced for an "Immigrants in America" festival in New York.
When talking about her inspiration for the play Beth says "I'm a native New Yorker, a licensed New York City tour guide and a volunteer Big Apple Greeter. Nearly every sentence in this play is rooted in real conversations I’ve had with tourists visiting New York for the first time."
Synopsis:
A visitor to New York City encounters a native New Yorker aboard the Staten Island Ferry, but while the visitor has lots of questions, the New Yorker only has some of the answers.

The Brothers Ortiz
The Brothers Ortiz is the story of two brothers–both successful, but in very different ways. Gabe Ortiz becomes a third-highest ranking officer in all of Texas while his younger brother Larry climbs the ranks in Puro Tango Blast, a notorious Texas Prison gang. Gabe doesn’t know all the details of his brother’s nefarious dealings, and he’s made a point not to ask, to protect their relationship. But when Larry is murdered during a home invasion in a rented beach house, Gabe has no choice but to look into what happened that night. To solve Larry’s murder, Gabe, and the whole Ortiz family, must ask each other tough questions.
